I noticed that property along Old Oak Ridge Road next to the airport is being cleared. Is something being built there? We’ve also noticed the work, and contacted Kevin Baker, executive director of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority to find out what’s going on there. Baker explained that workers are clearing the property to improve visibility for airplanes approaching Runway 23L.
The work is underway at the northeastern corner of the airport’s property that’s bounded by Old Oak Ridge Road. On the other side of the road, crews operating bulldozers and other equipment are knocking down trees and other growth, putting them in big piles and grinding them into chips. The clearing runs along a half-mile stretch of Old Oak Ridge Road between Inman and North Chimney Rock roads. “Scrub trees have grown up in that area following work done there about 10 years ago,” Baker said in an email earlier this week. “This project is to remove those trees before they become obstructions.”
