EDITOR’S NOTE I am fortunate to interact with many of the most accomplished members of our hobby. Marshall Fogel is certainly a collector of the highest order. A lifelong baseball and, in particular, Mickey Mantle fan, Fogel’s first hobby experience was attending the National in 1989. He left the show with a sense of wonderment, the first few items of his new collection, and brand new passion for baseball cards and memorabilia. In the decades since that first show, Fogel has amassed one of the finest and most well-rounded baseball collections in the world. I have seen cards and collections that leave me speechless, and Marshall’s collection certainly qualifies in that regard. But I’m impressed not only by what he has acquired but that he shares his knowledge and acquisitions with the community. He has loaned cards and memorabilia to public exhibits around the country, been the subject of countless hobbyrelated articles in a variety of publications, and teamed with Henry Yee and Khyber Oser to write the hobby’s definitive guide to collecting vintage sports photography. He has used his appreciation for history and passion for collecting to inspire others to participate in the hobby. Marshall is a special kind of collector and I was thrilled to learn that PSA’s Terry Melia would be recognizing him in our National Edition of PSA Magazine. I hope you all enjoy his detailed look at a hobby legend. Best,
Summer is a busy time for professional sports. We’ve got the excitement of the NBA and NHL playoffs, Major League Baseball is in full stride, and NFL teams are opening their training camps. All of that buzz transfers over to the hobby, where new trading card releases drop at a rapid rate, auction services offer incredible cards and memorabilia, and thousands of collectors come together to share each other’s company, supplement their collections and generally celebrate the hobby at the National Sports Collectors Convention.
