MYSORE ONE

SEMESTER 03 | BUILT AREA 600sqm

STUDIO FACULTY: PROF. KAVANA KUMAR

MYSORE ONE is a government body, where the public can pay their bills or apply for apllications among other programs.

The project attempts to respond to the surrounding context with respect to scale, material and mass through the idea of a GLASS BOX, which is in contrast with the St Philomena church in many ways.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM GOVERNMENT

Formed by the people, the least we can expect from our government is TRANSPARENCY.

It allows an insight into the working of the system and brings the people closer to the government.

It changes the way government collects information, it influences a behaviour because every decision is always visible.

CONTEXT

Responding to built and unbuilt becomes important in terms of relevance and the message it carries.

Two ways of responding, + Follow the same pattern, REPEAT AND REPLICATE what is established.( fit in )

+INNOVATE AND EXPLORE new methods of construction and materials.( stand out )

Some structures have stood the test of time and simentaneously there are structures being built for the same, this creates an idea of PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.

Material, form and experience, in some sense represents the time period. From stone to glass, there's been innovation of building materials and the way it communicates to people. Its important for the building to evolve with time. Can the same building carry a different function later?

FINAL ITERATION

The semicircular pods carry the program, made of glass to maintain the transparency. These are tinted for ease of identification. the levels towards ne provide the spill out space.

COLOR CODING PROGRAMS | CUES FROM TINTED GLASS USED IN THE CHURCH

The 'glass box' responds to the opposite st philomena church in a much contrasting way.

While the church scales vertically, the glass box extends horizontally. The church made of stone, a heavy mass structure compared to the glass box, made of glass extensively, keeping it light and giving a sense of temporaryness.

The two structures give a sense of two different time zones, one can tell which was built first.

MUSEUM FOR RUINS

SEMESTER 05 | BUILT AREA 1500sqm

STUDIO FACULTY : ASST. PROF AKASH RAI

Srirangapatna is an island-town in Karnataka, which has stood the test of time and ruins that tell tales of the past.

The main program of the museum hosts a 1:2 rebuilding of lal mahal built orginally by Tippu sultan. Some ruins are collected from the site and the rest is digitalised, using the hologram technology.

A tilt in the plan orients the landform created to the temple gopura ,baileys dungeon, and lal mahal, in a way framing the ruins of srirangapatna, becoming on-site ruins. Reminding people of what's left.



Ranganathswamy temple becomes an important marker in the town of srirangaptna.

The maidan opposite to the temple remains empty for most part of the year.

The road leading to the temple is the main axis, with the largest footfall.

During dussehra, the chariot takes the roads around the maidan for procession. it is also around this time that the town is most active.

The 4 nodes around the maidan carry different character. To the NW lies the baileys dungeon, an underground prison for the british, built by Tipu Sultan.

To the NE, the ghats carries a great deal of everyday functions for the locals.

To the W of the maidan, Tipu sulatan's ruined summer palace.

The ruined kalyani and the temple lies in the SW of the maidan, this is the area selected for the site.

To retain the idea of 'maidan' as a result, minimum intervention can be achieved on the surface. Forming almost a platform in the maidan.

To not visually challenge the 00 year old ranganathawamy temple. Rising only to a max m above the ground (except tower), the roof of the museum is made accesible and it could cater to various activities.

To give a sense of experience of excavation and discovering ruins. most ruins are buried under the earth and needs to be excavated,

A staircase leads down to the breakout space with washrooms. The main gallery combines physical ruins and digital rebuilding. A : scale rebuilding of lal mahal is done trying to achieve a feel of HOW A SPACE COULD HAVE ONCE BEEN.

FARM TO FORK

SEMESTER 06 | BUILT AREA 4000sqm

STUDIO FACULTY : PROF. KIRAN KUMAR ASST PROF. SURENDRAN AALONE

The studio brief is to design a CULINARY INSTITUTE with a concept of field to fork'.

The project attempts to bring together the idea of growing and learning. The facade of the building is made of a steel scaffolding with planter boxes in between. The staggered terraces act as plantforms for growing.

The main crop grown on field is ragi and on the facade grows a variety of leafy- vegetables.

 0


A linear stretch of 960m X 6m accomodates the programs for a culinary institute. The linearity is broken by the water body.

Half the site is left to farm. The farm produce is used for the institute, in a way self sustaining by growing own food.

The produce can also be distributed to the neighbourhood.

Careful planting of native trees like tamarind trees, coconut trees, jackfruit trees, some glacidria trees is done on the site boundary defining a 'live fence' which will grow over 0 years.

The vertical farming system forms the facade of the building, its made up of hyroponic farming.

THE LONG TERM PROJECT!

SEMESTER 07 | BUILT AREA 7000sqm

STUDIO FACULTY : PROF PRASHANT POLE

BRIEF: A COOPORATIVE FOR WEAVING AS A PRODUCTION CUM EXPERIENCE CENTRE. THE STUDIO AIMED AT "SUSTAINIBILITY".

The project tries to interpret this as an oppournity to use 'LAND AS A RESOURCE.'

In a sense, using the site to grow own materials for construction, food or even furniture. This way taking away nothing from the earth and in the process acting as a 'CARBON SINK'.

The structure is made of wood from trees grown on site.

Rammed earth is used to make the walls taking advantage of the natural clayey properties of the site soil.

The water body becomes used for variety of purposes through time. First for growing of trees, secondly in construction and lastly for the dyeing process.

PAY N' UNLOCK

SEMESTER 03 | BUILT AREA 100sqm

STUDIO FACULTY: PROF. KAVANA KUMAR

One of the many reasons people do not use the public toilets are because of the smell, yeah it stinks.

The project attempts to tackle these issues with the idea of a 'smart toilet' and make these public toilets more 'public'. The studio brief limits to the use of exploration of one material. Material chosen is brick.

Brick jali allows for ventilation and the form allows a more playful intervention to the context.

The idea of 'smart toilets' is to tackle the issue of smell and maintain hygeine in public toilets.

A common handwash area divides the two gender toilets but allows for interaction.

44

The user will have to pay with a one rupee coin, after which the toilet door unlocks setting the air freshner inside to spray. This removes out all the foul smell, if any. After the user is done with business, the door only unlocks after flushing.

This way the locking system is connected to air freshner and the flush system.
