Masonic Musings We continue with our history of those local craftsmen who followed the age-old trade of flour milling, a trade that was evident in Yarrawonga for nearly 100 years.

Flour miller John C Wilson OAM, having seen service in World War II joined the Yarrawonga Lodge of St David on 2nd January 1947, having been proposed by his good mate, John Grant then a steward in the Lodge. On the same evening another local ex-serviceman, Roy Stanley Bowles was also initiated. John Wilson went on to become one of the most respected citizens in the town, while the late Roy Bowles, who later moved to the Cobram area, became a pillar of strength in all things masonic, not just in Yarrawonga but throughout the surrounding districts. In the double initiation of January 1947 Wor Bro. Les Bowles PSGD, obligated both his son, Roy, and John Wilson. John Wilson devoted most of his spare time to the community, particularly in the field of health. As mentioned last week he turned off the electric power at the Riverina Flour Mill of Grant & Wilson in 1969. He joined the Hospital Committee of the Yarrawonga District Hospital in 1946 and became its President in 1957, and still held that position when the new casualty wing, named the Wilson Wing, was opened in 1983. John Wilson served as Secre-

tary of the Lodge of St David from 1953 to 1958 and became Worshipful Master in 1961-62. He became a Justice of the Peace and was later awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his services to the community. John is now a resident at Karana, the High Care Facility of the Yarrawonga District Health Service, the organisation to which he gave countless hours. Like his friend, John Grant, who presented him with his 60 year Membership Jewel in 2007, John Wilson has only ever been a member of the one Masonic Lodge, the Yarrawonga Lodge of St David. A worthy Freemason. The Lodge will be holding a garage sale in its supper room on Saturday 29th October. A fine array of wonderful junk will be available as will be an extensive range of golfing goods plus the normal plants, etc. In this instance we have decided to part with a large number of our antique bentwood chairs as well as a number of wooden trestles with steel legs. We also have an old electric organ which was purchased in 1960 for $765. Could be a ‘steal’ at 25 bucks. Nice bit of timber. Interesting. We currently have a more modern organ but since the death of Roy Bowles we have no organist. Music plays a large part in our ceremonies. We welcome two Joining Members, John Burn and Frank Smeaton. Cheers Stan Clarke IPM 103
