This holistic leadership program was first launched in 2022 and the positive feedback from members has been emphatic.

The course takes a contemporary view of the role of leadership in small businesses. It began with workshops in 2022 that focused first on developing, and then deploying, effective leadership skills. The third and final workshop in this program will examine ways to manage conflict, inferior performance, and misconduct in the workplace. We will be exploring change resilience and develop optimism to encourage the best out of staff and ourselves.

EYECARE ESSENTIALS

Help new employees learn essential skills for career and practice success.

Eyecare Essentials, delivered via ProLearn, is a foundation program focusing on developing the learner’s understanding of the Eye, Lenses and Frames, Prescriptions and Contact Lenses to support knowledge acquisition within the practice setting. It is also a pre-requisite program for participation in the Introduction to Optics program.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Modules are aimed at all new employees who have commenced their career in an optical practice.

Set up for career success with a solid foundation in eyecare.

For practice staff new to the optical industry, this one-day course provides the core skills and knowledge for a long and successful career in independent eyecare.

Focused on developing the skills of inexperienced team members, the course covers basic optical concepts and practical dispensing. Attendees will leave with the confidence to lead patient interactions, recommend, and dispense lenses, take basic measurements and perform frame adjustments.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

New practice staff or existing team members with little or no knowledge of optics or dispensing (0-6 months’ experience). Participants should complete the ProLearn Eyecare Essentials pre-requisite program and all modules shown there.

ADVANCED OPTICS

Learn the technical aspects of optical dispensing.

Take your dispensing staff’s knowledge to the next level and help them gain a deeper, practical understanding of the more technical aspects of optical dispensing. There will ne no need for them to shy away from difficult prescriptions anymore. Under the expert guidance of ACOD facilitators, the course will explore the more technical aspects of dispensing and enable participants to confidently recommend the most appropriate products and solutions for high or unusual prescriptions.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Practice staff with moderate dispensing knowledge (approximately 1-2 years’ dispensing experience) who have completed the Intro to Optics program. Participants should complete or review the ProLearn Optical Training Fuel Gauge and all modules shown prior to attending, as the course will build on those concepts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Gain knowledge on how to visualise a finished lens

• Understand the importance of back vertex distance measurements

• Discover the importance of minimum size uncut calculations and learn how to perform them

• Gain the knowledge to reduce the likelihood of problems associated with high-powered prescriptions

• Gain the confidence to troubleshoot problems that progressive lens wearers may experience

ADVANCED LENSES

This course takes a practical approach to lens selection and ensuring the best dispensing outcomes. ‘Advanced Lenses’ considers every variable - from prescription to frames and unique lens purpose. Attendees also learn how to choose the most appropriate lens material and understand the various features of PAL designs.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Practice staff with moderate dispensing knowledge (1-2 years) who have completed the Advanced Optics program.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Understand the appropriate use of lens materials and designs

• Understand and confidently recommend the different design options within the progressive addition lens (PAL) category

• Understand and confidently recommend lenses within the anti-strain and extended focus lens category

• Build confidence when recommending lenses and enable dispensing staff to work more independently

Learn how to make optical dispensing decisions that promote the very best outcomes for patients.

CERTIFICATE IV OPTICAL DISPENSING

12–18 MONTHS

The Cert IV in Optical Dispensing will help to ensure that optical appliances are dispensed as prescribed by the optometrists and/or ophthalmologists in accordance with The Australian Standards. It will give participants a thorough understanding of all aspects of the dispensing process.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is for Dispensers who have learnt their craft ‘on the job’ and would like to obtain a formal qualification to consolidate their knowledge and further boost their confidence. This is the highest-level qualification for optical dispensing in Australia and will be recognised across the industry. ADVANCED OPHTHALMIC OPTICS

The Academy of Advanced Ophthalmic Optics aims to deliver education that reaches beyond the scope of TAFE, other RTOs and undergraduate Optometry and Vision Science programs delivering Optical and Ophthalmic Optics education in Australia. Effective Optometric practitioners recognise that the patient experience does not end at the consulting room door. Developing a strong understanding of the application of ophthalmic dispensing is a critical part of a successful practice by ensuring the accurate and appropriate realisation of the Optometric consultation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is aimed at Optometrists and qualified and/or experienced Optical Dispensers with 5+ years of experience, who wish to further their ophthalmic optics knowledge and its applications in practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programs aims to:

• Articulate and integrate an understanding of the body of knowledge in ophthalmic optics and their applications to professional practice.

• Use expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in ophthalmic optics to independently and critically analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories.

• Apply knowledge and skills in ophthalmic optics to work in the ophthalmic industry.

• Demonstrate effective and professional skills in communicating information and judgements to patients and other health care providers.

The program will be delivered via online learning (22 hours of individual online learning, 11 hours of online discussion with course moderators including peer group discussions and interactions) and a 1 day face-to-face seminar (6 hours total).

• The online learning component will need to be completed, including online assessments, prior to attending the oneday seminar.

• Online commences 28 February and concludes 21 May

• 1 day seminar in Melbourne. (This component will also be delivered by live-stream).

Optometrists will receive up to 17.5 hours of CPD points for the online component. In addition, the live webinars will attract 11 clinical points, 6 of which are interactive.

Katrina McCarter – Speaker; Author; Business Strategist Generational Marketing

Katrina McCarter is a marketing and partnerships strategist who learned how to market as a first-time entrepreneur, juggling small kids and a big vision. Today, she’s a global expert and founder of Partnership Mastery and Marketing to Mums, working with small-business owners and entrepreneurs to accelerate their success. Katrina is also a best-selling author and award-winning international speaker who has shared Paris and New York stages with Google, Facebook and Audible. Katrina is the host of two podcasts and has a passion for sharing marketing strategies through her unique, practical approach.

Grant Hannaford –2022 International Optician of the Year; Co-Founder & Director, AAOO. Advanced Ophthalmic Optics 1

With over two decades of experience in optical dispensing, Grant is the first, and currently only, qualified lens designer in Australia. His studies in optics, lens design, mathematics and quantum mechanics have imparted a skill set that is unmatched in the Australian ophthalmic industry. As a practice owner and adjunct senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales, he brings a depth of knowledge and experience that is recognised throughout the industry. Grant is currently undertaking the Doctor of Ophthalmic Science programme at the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University, Birmingham England.

Thao Hannaford – Co-Founder & Director, AAOO Advanced Ophthalmic Optics 1

Thao graduated with honours in her Bachelor of Optometry degree at the University of New South Wales. She also has a Master of Optometry, Graduate Certificate in Arts and Bachelor of Arts degree. Thao has a special interest in sports and children’s vision. She is involved in the supervision of 4th and 5th year optometry students in their clinical placement at the practice. As a visiting clinical supervisor to the School of Optometry and Vision Science at UNSW she teaches at the 3rd and 4th year optometry clinics. Thao’s forte is primary care optometry and linking this to ophthalmic optics in order to provide the best solution possible for each patient.

Chedy Kalach – ACOD Director and Senior Trainer Intro to Optics; Advanced Optics; Advanced Lenses

Chedy began his optical life when he first qualified as an Orthoptist in 2001, soon after moving into Optical Dispensing. Working with both corporate chains and independent practices, Chedy gained his Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing in 2004. Ever eager to learn and grow, Chedy began his teaching career in 2009, completing a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment followed by a Masters of Business Administration. Chedy has taught across a variety of TAFE NSW institutes in both Australia and New Zealand. Together with friend James Gibbins, Chedy co-launched The Australasian College of Optical Dispensing (ACOD) in 2017.

James Gibbins – ACOD Director and Senior Trainer Intro to Optics; Advanced Optics; Advanced Lenses

James has been a dedicated optical dispenser practitioner since 1983, earning qualifications in Optical Dispensing and Optical Mechanics as his career progressed. Passionate about guiding and training new employees, the move from practitioner to educator was a natural fit. James began his teaching career with TAFE NSW at Sydney Institute (Ultimo) in 1997 and has since taught with OTEN (Western Sydney Institute), Sydney Institute (Randwick) and the University of New South Wales. In 2017, James co-launched launched Australasia’s newest and now largest school of optical dispensing – The Australasian College of Optical Dispensing (ACOD).

Rob O’Donnell – Director, OD3 Consulting Leading People

Rob is a Culture and People professional with an extensive background in organisational development, cultural change and coaching. Through his business, OD3 Consulting, Rob supplies tailored coaching and organisational development solutions. Rob’s passion lies in developing sustainable, high-performing people and teams.

Kate Hall – ProVision National Retail Operations Manager Designing a Unique Patient Journey

National Retail Operations Manager Kate Hall has been with ProVision for 10 years, and has previously worked for major brands including Virgin and OPSM. Kate has a rich understanding of operations, merchandise and marketing, which she developed through 20 years of executive-level experience managing high performance teams. Kate is particularly passionate about improving the patient experience and building sustainable, high-performing practices.

Jim Colley – ProVision Business Coach Designing a Unique Patient Journey; Intro to Retail Sales

ProVision Business Coach Jim Colley has been supporting our Queensland and Northern NSW members for over ten years. Jim has a great appreciation for the business challenges of local, independent practices, and is continuously looking for new ways to offer support. Jim has worked for major brands and organisations including Terry White and Michael Hill, and has a wealth of business knowledge in management, marketing, and sales.

Course Payment

Please note, charges for registrations to ProVision courses that require payment will appear in your monthly ProVision Statement.

Provision Education Cancellation Policy

All face-to-face learning cancellations must be received in writing via email to the Learning and Development team no later than three working days prior to the event unless otherwise stated. If you fail to advise of your non-attendance you may be charged a fee for costs that cannot be recouped by ProVision. Substitutions for cancelled registrations will be accepted.
