A LONG career working in health, as well as pride in her grandfather’s war service, has helped Wangaratta resident Robyn Marklew forge a strong connection with the Kokoda Track and the people of Papua New Guinea. From time spent bringing her health expertise earned at Wangaratta Private Hospital to the area with the No Roads to Health program, she now travels to Papua New Guinea several times a year as a guide with No Roads Expeditions, leading people along the historic Kokoda Track. Preparing for her next trek in a few weeks’ time, she said there are two main reasons people choose to tackle the challenges of the Kokoda Track – following in the footsteps of World War Two veterans, or a drive to tackle the physical and mental challenges of the trek. A tireless commitment to regular walking – over 10km a day - and other conditioning throughout the year keeps Robyn in shape for the demands of the Kokoda Track and its gruelling hill climbs. A big part of her connection to the area is the memory of her grandfather, Walter Scott, a member of the 2/14 Battalion who spent part of World War Two trapped on the track behind enemy lines, particularly in Isurava. His group spent 42 days lost in the jungle before working their way back to their battalion. “The first time I did the trek, it was very emotional,” Robyn said. “You can feel the reality of life then, and being on the track where they’ve been. “I love standing on a hill with nothing but a beautiful view, and thoughts in my head of what’s been before and what lies ahead. “It’s a life defining moment that I love to share with others.” continued page |
