A Very Unusual Trip to the Nation’s Capital A note from the desk of Charles Tolbert In early September an item appeared in the Waco Tribune-Herald inviting veterans of World War II to participate in a trip to Washington, D.C. They were being offered an all-expensepaid tour of the national memorials, sponsored by the nonprofit group, Honor Flight Austin.

“Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue”

Two Village residents, Alan Pilot and Ralph Post, with another Wacoan, Rufus Spain, became part of a select group of 34 veterans from central Texas making the trip. The three were transported to continued on page 3

Trip continued from page 1 the Austin airport early on the morning of September 26th by Ralph’s son, Jack. This turned out to be not just another sightseeing trip. Upon gathering at the airport, the participants (32 men and 2 women) were given special WW II caps and logo shirts that would identify them on their every move. They were also provided wheel chairs that would be “powered” by “guardians,” mostly retired or off-duty military volunteers; however, Jack Post was assigned to aid his father. Other clues suggesting that the trip was to be something very special occurred moments before embarking. A color guard with a bagpiper appeared and led the group in single file down the concourse to the plane. The honorees were greatly impressed by the very warm attention they received from bystanders in Austin and at the stops they made throughout their trip. Upon deplaning at Reagan National Airport another set of guardians greeted the travelers with wheel chairs.

Moving through the crowd, they were again greeted with applause, but they were really surprised when a group of ladies in uniform gave each of them a rose. Shortly after their arrival for the night at the Hilton Hotel in Alexandria, the veterans were honored with a formal dinner where they were given a welcome by the director of Honor Flight. Greetings were also expressed by the female pilot of their flight. The substance of the remarks suggested that the guests were all “heroes,” deserving of the attention they were accorded. The next morning guardians awakened their charges early for a delicious breakfast before moving out to tour the memorials. They first visited the “Jewel of the Mall,” the World War II Memorial. It is a masterpiece in design with 56 tall granite columns (representing the states and territories) surrounding an oval fountain-pool. Twenty-four crucial military engagements are remembered in sizeable bronze displays.

Alan was fortunate in finding the “Battle of the Bulge,” representing the area in which he served as a medic. After missing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, the group returned later to witness that inspiring event. To everyone’s surprise, there was a call for four able-bodied members to participate. It was Alan who had the privilege of placing the wreath on the tomb. After some musing about the trip, Ralph said that ceremony has always been a very meaningful experience for him. In later conversation he talked about his role as a radar technician in the struggle to liberate Italy. Also that morning, short visits were made to the Vietnam, Lincoln, and Korean War Memorials. In the afternoon, the bus lingered long enough at the Marine Iwo Jima Memorial for a photographer to get a picture with everyone seated in front of that famous flag-raising ceremony. A brief stop at the Air Force Memorial with its three stainless-steel spires reaching over 200 feet continued on page 4

Trip continued from page 3 into the air brought an end to the tour. From there the group headed to the airport for the return home. Resting on the plane following a very strenuous and sometimes emotional day, the travelers dozed until they heard “Mail Call” over the intercom. The words not only brought back memories from the past but signaled yet another surprise: letters and notes of appreciation from relatives and friends. Among letters the leader read aloud was Bess Post’s note to Ralph. Deplaning in Austin, the veterans were greeted with yet another royal welcome as they were led down the concourse with military escort. Along the way, people of all ages reached out with words of gratitude to those 34, numbered among the many of the “Greatest Generation.” The ride back to Waco was a quiet one as they reflected on the experiences of a very long day.
