Olivia Robinson ‘21 and Rosalie Bedganian ‘18, pictured with their coach Mark Pfau were named Independence League doubles champions. These two Pioneers qualified for the Southern California CIF individual tournament which was on November 20th . Retired major league baseball player and PHS alumnus Jeff Cirillo ‘87 stopped by his alma mater along with his son, Carson.

Catherine Sanders (fourth from left) from the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation joined the PHS community for the All Saints Day Mass and had lunch with students and members of the PHS administration. The Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation is always generous in providing PHS with grants toward financial assistance. Mrs. Sanders is welcome on campus anytime! Students participated in the annual AIDS Walk in Los Angeles and were featured on ABC7 Eyewitness News’ Emmy awardwinning weathercaster Danny Romero’s social media page. Way to go, Pioneers!

Despite graduating five key players, the 2017 girls' varsity volleyball team surpassed the expectations for the program coming into the season. The squad was in contention for the league championship up until the last weekend of the regular season. The team finished in second, the highest finish for the program in five years. Throughout the season, the team was ranked in the top-6 in Division 8 of the CIF-SS. They finished the regular season ranked 4th, the highest-finalranking for the program ever. Led by AllLiberty League selections Talia Patterson '18 and Sarah Cox '18, the Pioneers reached the second-round of the playoffs. The team finished 14-8 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League.

The 29th Annual Paul Sutton Tip-Off Classic wrapped up with two championships for Providence’s varsity basketball teams. The girls faced St. Genevieve in the championship game and battled to a 46-45 victory behind the defense of all-tournament team selections Giselle Camonayan ‘18 and Francesca Maravilla ‘18. Freshman Melissa Zozulenko ‘21 provided an offensive spark for the Pioneers all tournament, earning her the tournament MVP award.

JJ Totah ‘18 and Ella Spring ‘21 (pictured, at right) were the winners of the only two outstanding prosecution attorney awards. In addition, Larissa Siswanto ‘21 won an award as the outstanding clerk.

Six other PHS “Mock Trialers” received honorable mention certificates for their performances. Nine of 19 PHS Mock Trialers were recognized overall!

This year’s team made it to the third round and were eliminated by the team that went on to be the runner-up this year in the county competition. The boys’ varsity basketball team matched up with Agoura Saturday night. The Pioneers came out up two points after halftime and outscored the Chargers 15-4 in the third quarter. The Chargers were unable to recover and Providence closed out the game with a final score of 53-38. Sophomore Bryce Whitaker ‘20 was named to the all-tournament team and senior Tevan Khudatyan ‘18 was named tournament MVP.
