Boys’ VolleyBAll teAm nAmed liBerty leAgue chAmPions

Four-year varsity player Zack Pikhart ‘18 led the Pioneers to their first Liberty League crown since 2014. It was a remarkable turnaround for the Pioneers, who finished 19-6, 7-1 in league under second-year coach Nicole Brouillard. The previous season, Providence went 7-14 and 1-6 in league.

For his efforts, Pikhart was named the Liberty League Player of the Year. Earning spots on the singular All-Liberty League team were Pioneers senior libero Weston Tengan ‘18, sophomore setter Gerald Martin ‘20 and freshman middle blocker Nick Tidik ‘21.

Providence High School had the opportunity to participate and engage in the critically important conversation about mental health. PROJECT 375 is an extraordinary leader in the mental health space. Founded in 2012 by NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall and his wife Michi, PROJECT 375 is a national non -profit dedicated to unlocking human potential through conversation, education, and inspiration.

On Friday, February 16, Brandon and Michi spoke to the PHS community in an effort to break down the stigma and open up conversations about mental health education, advocacy, and awareness.

With offices in New York City and Chicago, PROJECT 375 responds to the needs of adolescents by providing parents, teachers and staff members with Youth Mental Health First Aid Training. The foundation has appeared on nationally syndicated television shows such as The View and Inside The NFL on Showtime, as well as local news outlets throughout New York and Chicago. In 2017, PROJECT 375 along with Brandon and Michi Marshall, were honored by the Mental Health Association for their tireless advocacy for the mental health community.

The girls’ soccer team achieved back-to-back Independence League championship titles. Orla Dempsey '21 was recognized as Independence League's Player of the Year and Kelly Fitzgerald '18, Shannon Walsh '19, Cecile Habash '21, and Kylee Obermeyer '21 were named to the singular all-league team.

The boys’ soccer team also achieved an Independence League Championship. Weston Tengan ‘18 was named the Independence League Player of the Year and was joined on the all-league team by fellow teammates Paul Swaine ‘18, Elias Ferguson ‘18, Montgomery Greene ‘18, and Bryan Ortiz ‘21.

The boys’ track team set out to win a Liberty League title this season, something that has not been accomplished since 1978, and did just that - dominating league finals and outscoring second place Trinity Classical Academy by 31 points!

Congratulations to the athletes in the track program who qualified for CIF Prelims: Monty Greene ‘18, Ryan Donnelly ‘18, Kieran Gehan ‘21, Ryan Clemens ‘21, Abram Bautista ‘18, Bryce Whitaker ‘20, Kirk Helling ‘18, Brian Markey ‘18, Tyler Bridges ‘18, Ella Florian ‘21, Carissa Guardado ‘20, and Nicole Rochart ‘21.

Congratulations to all 33 artists from PHS featured at the Burbank Youth Art Expo. Works created by Ruby Egloff ‘21 and Kristen Ayap ‘19 received special awards.

Over the Easter break, the Southern California Regional awards for the CAEA Young Artist Month competition and exhibit were held. Five counties were represented and Angelo Vitug ‘20 won first place in the digital media category and Katie Luttenberger ‘18 won first place in the 3D category. Katie Also won the Ruth Jenson scholarship which is awarded to one senior in the Southern California region.
