PHS Welcomes Michael Westphal as New Basketball Coach

Providence High School is excited to announce the hiring of Mr. Michael Westphal as the new boys’ varsity basketball coach. He will also be a full-time physical education teacher and assistant varsity golf coach in addition to his head boys’ varsity coaching duties.
Coach Westphal earned a Bachelor of Arts, Production Communication degree from Pepperdine University. While at Pepperdine, he played Division I basketball for the Waves and averaged 25 minutes and 9.0 points per game, and he shot 45% from three point range over his Pepperdine career. Coach Westphal also earned a Master of Business Administration, Sports Business degree from Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, FL.
Coach Westphal recently finished his second year as the head coach at Moorpark High School. The program that he took over finished the 2013-2014 season with a 7-20 record and last place in league, but in his first season his Moorpark team finished 17-11 and in second place in the very competitive Marmonte League.
Before coaching at Moorpark, Coach Westphal was an assistant coach at both Oaks Christian School and Calabasas High School. Coach Westphal is known as a very positive coach and leader of youth. He is excited to join a faith-based community and his love for the game and his basketball mind will bring a winning spirit and attitude to the Providence basketball family.
Michael Westphal’s basketball pedigree is strong. His father, Paul Westphal, was a star at USC and was the tenth pick in the 1972 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. He was a five-time NBA All Star, the head coach at Pepperdine for five years, and he was also an NBA head coach for 10 years.
Rounding out the staff for the boys’ basketball program are Shayaun Saee, Dade Faison, and Kebu Stewart. Saee, who will be assisting Westphal with the varsity team, is an NBA Data Analyst and former basketball player.
Junior varsity coach Stewart, a former NBA player, was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 1997 NBA Draft. He played 15 games during the 1997–98 NBA season, averaging 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Stewart will also be assisting with the boys’ varsity basketball team.
Faison, the freshman boys’ coach, received a full ride at the University of Maine, where he played basketball and discovered the call to become a coach.
