Italians know how to live life well, how to take the quotidian and make it something special. Espresso in the morning is something more than a ‘Cup A Joe’ to an Italian, as is a glass of wine much more than a sophisticated drink to be enjoyed in the evening. Sure, both taste great and have marvelous physiological effects. What is often overlooked, however, is that espresso and wine are inseparable from any notion of Italy – an Italian meal is incomplete without its wine and after-dinner espresso. Gelato, also, must not be ignored. This delightful treat plays a crucial role in the common, or communal life. Italians bond over gelato in their local piazzas. Young men can be seen on their motorini (mopeds) on a Friday night, with their romantic interests holding on tight behind them, as they wiz into town to the best gelateria. They would not want anything else.
