President’s Message Last month I spoke about how to earn your Florida Professional Degrees: I think the first degree most of us should get is the Florida Education Degree “FED” you earn this degree by going to FPP sponsored classes, like Florida School held yearly in Daytona Beach, This year Florida School is Scheduled from June 1st to 5th, please visit Fpponline.org to get more information. You will receive 2 educational Points (Not Merits). Other Points are earned by attending the annual convention, and seminars hosted by the FPP, as well as the PPA and SEPPA convention. A total of 35 points are required to earn the FED. But now I would talk about how our Guild, it has come together as a family, As many might know or will soon find out, We are a group of Professional Photographers that meet monthly at the Hilton Gardens Inn, at 3505 Kyoto Gardens Dr, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 every third Tuesday of the month. But what you might not know is that we are like family, I have received many calls over the years from members that needed help with an assistant for a project or the primary photographer was sick and could not cover the assignment. As an example 6 years I was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery, I had my mother call a Guild friend to see if he could assist us in covering a school portrait that I had scheduled for a few days after my surgery. Lucky for me, the Client, and the parents my Guild friend saved the day, I have had the pleasure to help save the day several times for other photographers in our association. This is why; I am asking all active members to tell your photography friend about our Guild Family. Not only for the Monthly education but also for the camaraderie and the opportunity to make long life friends. Looking forward to seeing you and your friends in the May meeting. Lets all learn about business.

Your Ideal Business… Rhea Lewis, Past President

Like many of you, I am always looking for ways to help me bring my business to the next level, to make more money and live a harmonious life. Sounds good right? Much easier said then done as I am sure many of you have experienced as well. Being an entrepreneur is difficult for us creative types, we can all admit that. When I first started my business I really had no idea what to expect, but I was very excited and determined to succeed. I was leaving a very left-brain job as an aerospace engineer to begin a new adventure into my right brain creative as a photographer. I guess you could say I was a suppressed creative waiting for the opportunity to bring my vision to the world..lol. I guess I was destined for some conflict there. Over the past 10 years I have slowly built a successful client base with my business and I am now faced with some difficult challenges. I am at a crossroads. I am motivated to take my business to the next level. How can I make an even better living at this and have it continue to fit my lifestyle? You would think my corporate training and experience would help me here..but not so much. I am finding out as my life changes, my business has to change with it. There are many coaches, webinars, YouTube videos and support groups online and on Facebook that you can seek and find to help you on your journey. Many books and internet resources at your disposal to read and glean information. Seems everybody these days wants to market to the photographer who is struggling. PPA.org has many resources as well. So what do we do with all of this information? I don’t know about you all, but it all sounds good on paper. You’ll say to yourself. “Yes I can do that”. But can you really? And if not, what is holding you back?. For many of us, we do have many obstacles and other commitments that prevent us from moving forward in our businesses. I know I do. We all have other demands on our time. I always say that if I didn’t have other responsibilities I could accomplish more. What I am finding now is that running an established business and trying to re-invent it into a new one is a very time consuming an overwhelming task. As I mentioned in the beginning, we all change and grow in our lives and our businesses need to do the same. So here I am having spent many dollars and time seeking wisdom in books, webinars, videos, memberships, etc..what do I do with it now? For me, at this point in my career, I needed to look inward and determine what I really want. What had been missing in the entire data dump of information that is out there at my disposal is that crucial step of stopping and really assessing where I am now and where I would like to be. This wasn’t an exercise in numbers only, this was an exercise in my true path as an artist and creator. There were plenty of people who could help me find ways to make more money, 4

but not help me find my own path creatively. At this point, at this crossroads, not having a clear path was holding me back from progressing on my journey. So what to do? Who could help me? Again, there are many books on the subject, but I needed a more personal approach. Enter Jeffrey Shaw’s program I had the pleasure of attending at Imaging USA in Phoenix in February this year. Finally a mentor/coach that understands this dilemma of right-brain, leftbrain conflict and how the creative mind works! His teaching and guidance have been just what the doctor ordered and I am now beginning to see better what the path may be for me. His approach is unlike any other on the market now. He understands the creative mind and has much experience and training as a coach and mentor. He is a fellow photographer and runs a very successful photography business in New York , so he is fully in tune with all of the nuances of our business. I have asked him for permission to use some of his teachings in this and future articles and he has agreed! You can also reach him at Jeffrey@jeffreyshaw.com. He has a very cool new aid to photographers called Business Buddy www.BusinessBuddy.org that has many of his awesome tips and guidance to freeing your creative mind to be more productive, successful and happy. Business Buddy has a 30 day FREE trial membership where after the 30 days you can opt-in t the product. You are in no way committing to paying anything until you choose to AFTER the end of the 30 days and the they’ll ask if you want to opt-in..that’s it. No commitment, so you can check him out and see if you like what he has to offer and if it is a good fit for you. Each month you’ll get a video with great info along with homework and assistance if you want to participate and work towards your goals. His April 2014 Training Video is on time management and getting more done than you ever imagined possible. This module truly hit home with techniques I have never tried before keying in on how we feel about things as opposed to just a system of writing things down and checking them off a list. He delves into why we procrastinate things and help us become more aware therefore cognizant and able to work toward solutions that work for our own individual struggles. In the coming months I be giving you a taste of his content with informational and useful content that you can apply to yourself and your business. I am so excited about this journey that I am on and hope that many of you will follow me and these articles and that they will in turn help you on your journey’s as well.

Keep spreading the good Karma, Rhea 5
