DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY’S LETTER
Heading into our 2024 season, it looks like Mother Nature was kind to us, delivering a slightly above average snowpack This is good news for our golf courses—plenty of moisture to recharge the soil and reservoirs but not so much that it will be detrimental to the golf season The turf team has a good grasp on the property and programs necessary to improve playing conditions and all of us are excited to start a new season implementing an agronomic program that will yield exceptional playing conditions
Of the many challenges that affect the conditioning of our courses, including long winters, a short growing season and high-altitude dessert conditions, none are more important than the current drought that we are in the midst of here in Utah, along with the rest of the west Our use of the limited water resources is under extreme scrutiny from all folks that make Utah their home As a turf management team, we are tasked with providing world class playing conditions, while being exceptional stewards of this dwindling water resource Over the last couple several seasons, we have been developing agronomic programs that will facilitate the conservation of this resource to ensure the long term viability of Promontory and all of its wonderful amenities
Reducing our water consumption using such cultural practices as core aeration, soil fracturing, wetting agent application, sand topdressings, and the addition of composts to historic dry areas will improve the playing conditions for all These practices improve the water infiltration rate of our soils, create room for deeper root penetration and root mass, improve soil moisture retention, and reduce thatch In combination, these practices create a firmer, faster playing surface that runs true
Other areas of the golfing experience that we will continue to improve on are the numerous bunkers that need constant sand management and the improvement of the turf that surrounds them . We are currently making plans for a comprehensive bunker renovation on the Nicklaus Painted Valley Course as well . The areas that surround the greens are extremely important for quality shot making and scoring . We will continue to improve on the predictability of ball roll and bounce in these areas to enhance the golfing experience The team will ramp up the fight against the ever-present weed population, as well as any damage and mitigation from the many types of rodents found around the property
From the Promontory turf management team, welcome to the 2024 golf season . We look forward to seeing you all out there enjoying a wonderful round of golf . Our greens will be in pristine condition, playing fair and true for all of golfing community . We welcome any questions and comments from all of our members and guests so that we may address any concerns you may have .

PROMONTORY AWAY FROM HOME
Promontory Golf Staff will be reaching out to Members at their other club to schedule golf in cities where our Members reside when they are not at Promontory . We will be setting up weekends to travel to your city and have some of our Members host other Promontory Members at their clubs in that town If you are interested in hosting a Promontory group at your other club please contact The Hills Pro Shop at 435-962-9910 We will try to set up an event in your town to play your home course as well as other Promontory Members’ courses in that area .
HOLE-IN-ONE PROGRAM
Getting an “ACE” is one of the most special things that can happen for a golfer, and we all enjoy celebrating this accomplishment When a Member gets a Hole-in-One (H-i-O), they receive a commemorative plaque, their name memorialized on the H-i-O board in the Golf Shop, and if they are a participant in the optional H-i-O program, they receive a credit to sponsor celebratory drinks at a Member mixer . Any remaining balance from the fund can be used as a credit in the Golf Shop
The H-i-O program is funded by a $5 charge to each participating Golf Member’s account when the H-i-O is recorded . All Golf Members that have notoptedoutoftheprogramwillbecharged This initial charge covers the Primary Member and Member-A Opting out can be accomplished by contacting Neil Jones at njones@promontoryclub .com . If junior or other immediate family members would like to participate, they need to sign up at the Golf Shop and will pay an additional $5 fee per H-i-O .
