W I T H . . .

An exquisite dressing for tossed salads or drizzled over risotto, pasta dishes and fresh bread.

Media Personality & Former AFL Footballer With such a high profile media career how do you relax when out of the spotlight? I am very much a homebody. I enjoy nothing more than walking into my house and closing the door, turning the phone off and forgetting what’s going on out in the real world. When I’m not working you will find me in front of the fire, reading a book, watching a movie or driving down to the beach house.

You are an author of children’s books, what book are you reading at the moment?

Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil Perfect for dipping in fresh crusty bread, dressing salads, pouring onto freshly cooked vegetables and a lovely woking oil that will complement (not dominate) any dish you make.

‘Like the Flowing River’, which is a collection of short stories written by Paulo Coelho.

You grew up in Kyabram and have family there, what is your fondest memories of Ky? Probably Saturdays during the footy season. You would play footy in the morning, check out the netball and then head to watch the Ky Bombers in action.

Handmade Soaps Made from Greendale Grove Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Are any of your three boys showing signs of being an elite footballer like their Dad? Do you want them to play top level football? All 3 boys play football, with varying degrees of enthusiasm and ability. I will be happy watching them play whatever it is that makes them happy. It doesn’t have to be football.

What’s your best tip for anyone who would like to get into media? The ability to write is the cornerstone of all media pursuits. Get as much experience writing articles, whether it is for the school newsletter, the local cricket report or the junior football club. Being able to arrange your thoughts onto paper and produce a precise, informative, interesting and entertaining piece is absolutely essential if you harbour media ambitions. Radio and television is as much about writing and being creative as producing copy for a newspaper is.

What footy medal do you still have hanging on your wall? The only football memento in my house is a picture of myself and the 3 boys on the M.C.G. on the day I retired from footy. I’m not sure where all the other stuff is. In a box somewhere, I imagine. [hs] 10

Olive Ambience Oliv eho use Res tau ran t... Fine dining, gourmet lunches and homemade afternoon teas are all on the menu at the Olivehouse Restaurant, but for many of its diners it’s the ambience of the location that is the drawcard. A stately red brick homestead-style building is home to the beautiful restaurant which is afforded wonderful views onto a young olive grove, expanses of manicured lawn, edged with thick agapanthus, and the mauve heads of a prolific lavender hedge that seems to flower all year. Walls of glass that open onto rambling verandahs stretching almost into the olive grove provide the perfect setting for a special meal, informal get together or a grand event such as a wedding. The olive themed restaurant, on the Goulburn Valley Highway south of Shepparton, was built nearly four years ago to expand on the Henry family’s passion for growing the Mediterranean fruit and producing quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil and table olives. Anne and Rod Henry began their journey 10 years ago when they decided to diversify on their traditional cattle property at Shepparton

Fact File • Greendale Olives produces 14 different varieties at the Kialla property. • Three varieties - Frantoio, Correggiola and Nevadillo are produced for oil. • Greendale Cold Pressed Extra Virgin olive oil is pressed within hours of harvest by the Henry’s on their Kialla property. Timing of press is crucial to taste. • Harvest is generally mid May to early June. • Extra Virgin Olive Oil is oil from the first press and is best quality oil. • Olive oil must be tested for acidity of less than one per cent. • This is Greendale’s seventh year of oil producing. • Spanish, Manzanillo, Kalamata and Verdale are used as table olives. • Greendale table olives are pickled in natural brine.

“There are plenty of small cafes and tasting areas on olive farms but nothing to this extent,” Jacqui says. ”The restaurant was always meant to be a fine dining experience for our customers but also a means for us to introduce people to our product.” Greendale Grove Olive Shop, run by Anne, is in the same complex, allowing diners to taste and take home the olive oil or table olives used in their meal. Greendale Grove tapenades, dressings, jams and chutneys are also available.

The shop stocks other regional produce, local wines and handmade olive-based body products, including the range from Est. Anne now supplies the Australian owned company with her oil for use in body care products. “This is a real feather in our cap as Caroline Imlach from Est is quality driven and was importing the olive oil until we were able to provide her with our wonderful locally produced oil,” Anne says. “We are known for quality and consistency, both every important,” Anne says. The synergy between the produce shop and the restaurant adds to the complete Olivehouse experience.

life lake on the

This is more than a beautiful home story. It is an insight into one couple’s passion to live on Lake Mulwala. A water front home built without budget is something many of us can only dream about. For semi retired couple, Bob and Sandy Kay, their magnificent two storey home on the shores of New South Wales’ Lake Mulwala, is a hard earned reality.

HOMESCAPE Magazine

19

Arguably the most recognisable home on the border town’s lake front, the grand white render exterior is a stand out from both street level and the water. In Bob’s own words the project was always aimed to be “bit of a statement” but still result in a livable, low maintenance home they could enjoy all year. From the street, a stylish timber-look roller door spans a four car garage which provides important privacy to the couple’s back yard. From lake side the curved top decking with nautical influences and expanses of glass onto a sand stone covered patio are eye catching features. The Kays have lived in Mulwala for seven years and bought the 3000 square metre water front block in December 2003 to build their new home. Fifteen years ago the couple and their two daughters were living in Dimboola and travelling to Lake Mulwala for water skiing and spending time with friends on weekends and holidays. According to Bob it was an easy decision to make Mulwala, and the lake, their home.

It was important that the whole structure looked like one house although we were able to create two homes.

20

www.homescapemag.com.au

Jarrah dominates the kitchen, stair case and upstairs floor.

“We always thought we would live here full time. I was looking for a project and designing this home became my main focus for a while,” Bob says. Along with local builder Jack Riches, the supermarket owner spent about six months putting his ideas and desires on paper and sourcing the feature materials used throughout. The home boasts 50 squares of highly finished, open plan living including dining, upstairs and downstairs lounges, four bedrooms, two ensuites, main bathroom, and powder room. But the most impressive part is that Bob has built a second mirror image home next door. “It was important that the whole structure looked like one house from the front and back but we were able to create two homes,” Bob says. The new neighbors moved in 12 months ago. An abundance of sandstone, sourced from India, has been used tastefully inside and out. It covers walls and floors of living areas in the front and back yard and doubles as feature walls inside, giving natural color and texture against the magnificent dark Western Australian Jarrah timber. The Jarrah dominates the kitchen, stair case, upstairs floor and the custom made bathroom vanities by Border Cabinets.

A vaulted ceiling with a 28 degree pitch is a striking feature from upstairs and it creates the feeling of space and height over the raised living area. An open Jarrah stair case with stainless steel rails and cabling evokes the nautical theme of the top outdoor deck where the same rails and cabling are used. The Kay’s love of Jarrah continues in the dining area where a magnificent table to seat 12 takes pride of place. The setting was custom made by Shepparton’s Envisage Furniture. So with this much attention to detail, surely the Kay’s have designed their dream home and settled in for the long term. “Not sure really,” quipps Bob. “We love this house but something else could come up,” he laughs. “One thing’s for sure though, we will always be on the shores of the lake.” [hs]

lawnless and loving it A lawnless element is creeping into our streets and gardens. Home owners are putting away their Victas and choosing contrasting pebbles, mulches or water features instead of grass. “Once all gardens had lawn, but in the last year I’ve only put in one – and that was artificial grass. People want drought tolerant, low maintenance gardens, says Brad Smith of Echuca- based B&B Landscaping. Brad helped landscape our new house in Echuca. We wanted an artificial creek to flow between the two wings of our home and under the central atrium into a pond. A bridge across the pond would form the entrance to our house.

Dry creek beds, rock gardens and mulched areas are replacing lawn.

We had seen a couple of Brad’s projects and liked them. However we were seeking something different. Could Brad achieve what we wanted? After a couple of discussions and, with nothing on paper, we put our faith in Brad and let him go for it.

Another difficulty was that the water course had to be installed after the buildings were constructed. Tradesmen couldn’t work around the uneven ground it would create.

a winning combination Sutton Constructions Building a new home can be quite daunting. It will probably be your largest investment. You probably also have quite a few ideas about the sort of house you want. The problem is how to achieve it. For some the idea of building a new home is to search the internet or visit display homes until they find a floor plan and style of home that appeals to them and suits their budget. The building company, usually one of the larger volume builders, constructs the home. Some choose to take a different path. They wish to individually design their home. Many of these people have built before and have quite a few ideas about what they want in their new home. They may employ an architect or draftsperson to draw up their plans. Once the plans are finished they look for a builder to construct their new home.

We individually design a home to suit the family’s requirements and budget.

Echuca-Moama builders, Sutton Constructions, offer a different option. Starting from scratch they individually design a home to suit the family’s requirements and, more particularly, their budget. “We design unique but cost-effective homes,” say proprietors Peter Sutton and Stephen Robson. “We develop a relationship with clients, spending time with them at each stage of the building process. We even help some clients choose a suitable block of land. After drawing up the design they want we help them choose appliances.

Our

colour consultant is also available to help with finishes. Another advantage to our clients is there is no extra charge for the house plan.” Each of Sutton Constructions home is designed especially to suit the block on which it will be located. This is especially important to achieve a high level of energy efficiency and to cut down on greenhouse gas

emissions.

Sutton Constructions

a winning combination

Sutton Constructions has won over 30 regional, state and national Master Builders Association awards for their homes. The awards recognize excellence in design, quality of workmanship and value for money. Recently the company scooped the pool at the Master Builder’s regional housing awards. It was chosen Regional Residential Builder of the Year in North West Victoria for an impressive contemporary residence in Moama, which also won Best Custom Home over $500,000. Sutton Constructions also won the award for Best Custom Home in two other categories - for a townhouse in Echuca and a classic family home in Moama. [hs]

The Master Builders Association campaigned for over 80 years for the registration of builders. From 1993 builders had to be registered, with the Building Practitioners Board overseeing the quality and standard of their work. Ensure that your builder is a registered domestic building practitioner and a member of the Master Builders Association of Victoria. Telephone the Building Commission on 9285-6400 for builder registration enquiries. “Builders recognised through (the) awards process have displayed attention to detail and quality workmanship – presenting finished homes of the highest possible standard,”

Full-time fit

Most of us understand the importance of exercise and a healthy diet and dabble in keeping fit, but not too many turn this way of life into a full-time passion. That is exactly what Suzanne Reilly did two years ago. Suzanne, 38, is a health “rags to riches story” and in her own words has come from being overweight and unhealthy to an exercise junkie now working as a fitness instructor. “Eight years ago I joined the 40 days for $40 at Aquamoves to do something for myself. I was carrying weight and there was nothing healthy about my diet so it was time to either curl up in a ball or do something about it.” A couple of classes a week turned into 6 days a week at the gym. Suzanne was hooked and was very happy with the results. Her dedication to exercise and a healthy lifestyle over five years paid off. She lost more than 30 kilos and was feeling better than ever. “The support and encouragement from Aquamoves staff was what got me to that place, I was more confident, felt better and looked better too.” The busy working mum of four boys was so hooked, 3 years ago she decided to study to be an instructor and two years ago she quit her other job and launched in full-time. “It is just fabulous to go to work. I love it. I am working with and helping people achieve their goals and I understand because I have come from that place,” Suzanne says.

- Suzanne Reilly

You will find her in front of a Body Pump class, a cycling class called RPM, a Combat class and in the pool as well as heading up the ‘Extreme Measures’ program which is a balanced weight loss program working on nutrition, exercise, discipline and motivation. “I really relate to these people because I’ve been there and it is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. I’ve been able to work on my own self esteem and helps others as well. “I never really had a passion before, but this is definitely my passion.”

Envisaging something a little different Janita Norman and Alastair McDonald are business partners in Envisage Building Design, based in Echuca. Janita has been designing homes for over fifteen years, previously operating Janita Santilla Building Design. Alastair has extensive experience in both residential and commercial design. Envisage Building Design created the plans for John and Gloria Westbury’s new home in Moama. “The brief was simple,” John explains, “we wanted a curved roof and tilt panel construction…and people to walk in and say ‘Wow!’” Entry to the Westbury’s home is via a curving hallway, lined with galvanized steel panels, into a huge living room whose most outstanding feature is an arc of shining metal ceiling. John’s wish has been granted. As well as looking sensational the curved metallic panels provide very effective acoustic insulation. The entire ground floor of the home is polished concrete, which would normally create nasty echoes in such an open space. Despite all the hard surfaces noises don’t bounce around as you would expect. At one end of the large living area is an incredibly spacious kitchen and a huge, curving slab of polished concrete bench. John explains that there are no tiles in the home, “We’ve used stainless steel sheeting behind the kitchen benches and polished concrete floors. We don’t like tiles as grout tends to stain. This house is easy to clean.” At the opposite end of the living area are sliding doors, which lead to an outdoor area and spa, replete with, of course, a sweeping steel pergola which matches the roof line. “It’s a great party house,” Gloria comments.

it means that the designer hasn’t much room to be creative. “

Gloria says they wouldn’t alter anything,

“After Janita came up with the plan we only made a few small changes. “ “Janita did things we wouldn’t have considered part of her job..she did the extra miles,” says Gloria, “she helped conciliate with neighbours who put in objections, helping smooth the way for the project to proceed. She took a lot of worry from our shoulders.” Janita assisted with the choice of internal finishes and a colour consultant helped out too. John and Gloria agree that this took a lot of the stress out of building. John and Gloria’s particularly love the effects of the wall lighting of an evening and, of course, the front entry. They previously lived in a heritage home in Yarraville. This time they were looking for something less formal and suited to a relaxed lifestyle.

To one side of the lounge area is a dining alcove with inset shelving and contemporary lighting. Also on the ground floor is the master bedroom. A clever spacesaver is the toilet of the ensuite, which doubles as a guest toilet by way of an extra door. In this home there’s a judicious use of space yet a fantastic sense of space and light. Lots of north facing windows allow in plenty of winter sun, helped along by the light coming from the open gallery above. Up the timber staircase is an open area and excellent vantage point to watch the party below, or gaze at the dramatic tones of the tilt panel walls. Two other bedrooms and a generous bathroom adjoin this area. Both Janita and her clients are thrilled with this home. Janita enjoyed being given a fairly free rein to do what she wanted, within the rather broad parameters set by John and Gloria. “Some clients are locked into certain ideas. With restraints imposed by the council as well

40

Back at the front of the house I admire the grooves cut into the tilt panels for lighting. Whilst tilt panels are used extensively in commercial construction it’s unusual to see it used in domestic housing. John tells me that the home and its curved roof line have created a lot of interest. He’s pleased that the lack of exterior timberwork and compact native garden will make his home easy to maintain. He would be able to relax if he wasn’t planning to build a complementary but much larger house on the block next door. Envisage Building Design is currently working on the plans. This time he is planning to build the house himself. [hs]

certainly a pleasant and very comfortable place to get away from it all. The small hamlet of Bearii is about a kilometre away. Its one and only shop closed down a while back.

Trinity explains how his hives help pollinate the almonds and demonstrates how the nuts and honey are processed. Unlike much of the honey we eat, Aintree farm’s product is ‘cold spun’ so that it retains its vitamins and enzymes. “It has a more honest flavour, explains Trinity, “many of the old timers comment it’s like the honey they had as a kid. Kids always say our honey is really nice.

Aintree farm’s computer controlled watering system and holistic farming techniques are especially interesting. The Richards are passionate about producing chemical free honey and almonds, using both foods in different and creative ways. Trinity is a qualified chef and soon

A stay of 2 nights would enable you to visit the rest of the properties on the farm trail at a relaxed pace and give you plenty of time to sample the range of produce available.

The farm gate brochure has descriptions of each of the producers and suggested itineraries. It also includes some fabulous recipes using food from the various farms. Produce available includes buffalo meat, cheeses and citrus fruits. As well as the wineries there is a brewery which uses traditional techniques to make specialty beers.

Celebrity chef Stefano di Pieri has been the food and wine ambassador for the Murray River since 2001. “Using local produce is the best way to get a feel for the true essence of a region – what makes it tick and what makes it unique,” he says.

So grab a farm gate trail brochure from the website or from your local tourist office and pack your esky to bring some of the delicious produce home. Several producers have shop fronts which are open most of the time and others just have a roadside stall. Remember that some of the produce is seasonal so may not be available at the time of your visit.

It may be wise to phone ahead and check opening times. If doing the trail in just a day you may wish to book ahead for lunch at Aintree Farm as it’s the only property that serves a meal.

A wonderful spot to

finish may be Monichino’s, to try one of their excellent wines.
