towns and surrounds

towns & surrounds Surrounding the city of Shepparton there are many small towns featuring attractive scenery, picturesque walks, museums, wineries, bike rides and eateries. Towns such as Dookie, Merrigum, Murchison, Tatura, Toolamba and Undera contribute to the region’s reputation for diversity, culture and hospitality.

MurChison

MoorooPna

Murchison is known as the ‘River Bank Garden Town’ and has some fascinating history. From gold rush days and paddle steamers working their way up the river; to the Ossario at the Cemetery – a mausoleum constructed in remembrance of Italian Prisoners of War and detainees who died in Australian prison camps.

Known as ‘Fruit Salad City’, Mooroopna is surrounded by orchards, rich agricultural crops and pastures, and the Goulburn River with its surrounding forest and wetlands.

Take a stroll along the riverside boardwalk and see some of Greater Shepparton’s MooovingArt. Enjoy local food and wine, and learn about the legendary Murchison Meteorite which broke up in the skies above the town in 1969, its remnants now studied in museums across the world.

The main street features a shady garden reserve, offering rest to those seeking friendly and personalised service offered by many small businesses and interesting retail outlets.
