I don’t know about you, but for me it’s that time of the year when “spring cleaning” seems so appropriate. It is the time to get outside and clean up the garden and the remnants of winter, and time inside to reorganize, recycle and redistribute elsewhere. If only I listened to myself!

Ed McKeon former Shepparton Resident Ed Mckeon, Co-owner of Tawriffic and winner of 1989 Melbourne Cup The McKeon name is synonymous with women’s fashion in Shepparton from the 1950’s to the late 1980’s. Son Ed, was and still is, an avid supporter of the horse racing industry and in 1989 his persistence paid off when a horse he had part ownership in called Tawriffic won the Melbourne Cup. Homescape caught up with Ed to reflect on the magic of the first Tuesday in November 1989.
Ed, Tell us about this photo This photo was taken 200m before the finish line and we had just drawn to the lead, and won going away.
Did you have much success with other horses before that magical day back in 1989? sizes 000 - 8
That day in Nov 1989 is still very real in our memories. We’d had some success in earlier years with Harcourt Terrace, Redcliffe Gardens, Natural Trump, True Score, Lord Shiner and Times Square.
Tell us about that day in November. We had come down from Shepparton the previous year with 20 friends, hopefully to celebrate, unfortunately he ran 10th! The next year we were down to 6 friends, and he won, but after the race we had 2000 new friends! Holding the Cup with my family in the mounting yard is a moment I will never forget.
You brought the actual Cup back to Shepparton the day after the race, where did you take it? Directly to the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club, where everyone was waiting for us. The drive into Shepparton was amazing as there were balloons in our colours hanging from the trees at Arcadia and then in our street. I then took the Cup to all the Pubs and many schools, it was as though the whole area had won the Cup. A great feeling
Did Tawriffic go on and win more major races? He won two more races, and died at the Stud in Ireland six years ago. I did have some success with one of his sons, “Tooborack”.
Are you are still involved in racing and breeding horses? Yes absolutely, it will never leave my blood! Horses that I have a share in include Exceed All Limits and Just Sioux Me, it will be exciting in the future.

When Dean and Penny Anderson moved into their heritage listed home close to Shepparton’s CBD their first and biggest challenge was how to fit what they wanted into their backyard – a paltry 10 metre by eight metre space flanked by a driveway and their neighbour’s fence. A swimming pool, outdoor living area, barbecue and garden needed to find a place in this small space so some ingenious ideas and clever manipulation of these lifestyle features was needed. Today the family of four enjoys a 7 metre by 7 metre pool, gorgeous resort-like living space on Mirboo decking, tropical plantings with raised timber boxes and a patch of lawn, which is synthetic so there is no mowing. The transformation from an ugly, bare patch of lawn with pavers leading to a clothes line is nothing short of breathtaking.

But the secret is about to be spoilt, by a group of local and usually opposing master chefs who have joined forces to place their twin towns firmly on regional Australia’s food and wine map. A recent gastronomy event, held at Echuca Oscar W’s Restaurant, saw master chefs from four local restaurants come together to prepare a seven course tasting experience. Tourism Victoria’s Tom Smith headed a prestigious list of guests, along with local shire representatives, tourism, food and wine industry members and regional food producers, for a first class food and wine experience. This was a first for Echuca-Moama, with chefs and waiting staff from Morrisons Riverview Winery and Restaurant, Oscar W’s Wharfside Redgum Grill and Deck Bar, Ceres Restaurant and Coriander B&B and Function Centre, coming together to share a kitchen and more importantly, checking their egos at the door.

The perfumed flowers of a magnolia are anxiously anticipated by Sophie, a magnolia lover, and the blossoms of fruit and other trees are a sight to be seen on the gloomier days of late winter. There is also bulb
filled beds teasing with spring colour, and cheerful daffodils are allowed to put on their display in lawned areas if they wish. White trumpet lilies enjoy a damp spot at the bottom of the garden and the hot colors of canna lilies come soon after . Seaside daisy creeps along stone edging and the yellow flower of Doricidum or Leopard’s Bane is used to border one terrace from another. The present owners’ have certainly stamped their own influence on the garden since their arrival in 2006. The river side of the main house has been painted a bright ‘Rastas’ pink with turquoise borders and draped in wisteria. Adam’s father, the late Robert Sangster, had a home in Barbados for more than 30 years where his son spent a great deal of his younger years. The Rastas colours are still a favourite of Adam’s, Sophie explains.

Hs: do you Have to use a great deal of diplomacy in your Job? JM: I am always honest and if a client wants a particular style that I don’t think will work for them I tell them… because they have to be able to do their own hair when they go home.

What a wonderful place to spend your 60th birthday. Whilst there some of us took an optional trip of a 2.00 am walk up Mt Sinai where Mosses received the 10 commandments. 78

Some say a lamb should replace the kangaroo on our Coat of Arms (I think Sam Kekovich was one). Roast it, grill it, braise it, stew it… it doesn’t matter. Now is the best time to select a good looking lamb from your favourite butcher and dish it up to friends and family. And the wine? Monichino 2007 Sangiovese. Tim and I had to sample many wines (it’s a tough job!) to find a match for this dish but the Monichino Sangiovese was top notch. The bit of spice was great with the lamb and the whiff of acid mellowed with the honeysuckle dressing.
Monichino 2007 Sangiovese
serves 4 4 lamb rumps 1tsp Szechuan pepper 2 baby cos (use inner leaves) 2 bunches asparagus 100gm cooked chickpeas (or 1 tin) 500gm green beans 2 red chilli’s 1 box cantonese rock sugar 1 large pinch dried honeysuckle flowers 2 cups rice vinegar 1 lemon Sea salt & olive oil Dressing: place rock sugar, chilli, honeysuckle flowers, rice vinegar and lemon juice in a saucepan and reduce by 1/3 over medium heat. remove from heat but do not chill. Lamb: marinade in crushed Szechuan pepper, sea salt and olive oil over night. Seal over high heat until browned all over, place on baking tray in oven and cook for 15-20 mins on 200 degrees. Allow to rest. To assemble: Briefly blanch your cos, asparagus, beans and chickpeas. drain, drizzle with dressing and place in a nice stack on your plates. Meanwhile, slice your lamb into 3 on a very sharp angle and drizzle more dressing around the plate. All done! enjoy! Recipe supplie d courtesy of Friar’s Cafe,Sh
