Like all Victorians, indeed all Australians, my Homescape colleagues and I have been saddened and distressed at the horrendous events of February 7th or Black Saturday as it has become known. Our hearts go out to those individuals and families whose loss and devastation is hard for most of us to comprehend. As we go to print we are witnessing unparalleled generosity from our fellow Australians for the bushfire survivors, and gratitude for the courage and bravery of our firefighters, the tireless volunteers and all of those people and organizations who are working together to help the survivors to get their lives together again. We at Homescape also want to help. On page 51 you can also assist the recovery effort by taking out a subscription to the Goulburn and Murray Valleys’ prominent home and lifestyle magazine. One hundred percent of your subscription will be donated to the Victorian Red Cross Bush Fire Appeal... and in anticipation of your support we sincerely thank you. Our Autumn edition is full of new ideas, Mother’s Day gift suggestions and stories about some inspirational Goulburn and Murray Valley businesses and individuals. And to everyone reading this, spare a thought for all mothers this Mother’s Day the 10th of May – not only for those mothers who will have their families to celebrate with - but also for those mothers out there who may not hear the words Happy Mother’s day. Happy reading. Carmel Johnson

Michael Dobbie Australian World cup representative & paralympian Tatura’s Michael Dobbie, 29, began wheelchair tennis six years ago after a motorbike accident left him a paraplegic. He consistently plays in the Australian Open Wheelchair Championships. In 2006 he represented Australia at the World Team Cup in Brazil. That same year he won a bronze medal at the FESPIC games in Kuala Lumpur. He competed in the Sydney Wheelchair Tennis Open and the US Open Wheelchair Championships in 2007. In 2008 he competed in the Beijing Paralympic Games, which he describes as the best experience of his life.

You have enjoyed huge success in a short time with your tennis. Did you always play tennis? Growing up in a country town you get a lot of opportunity to play sport. I played tennis for a couple of seasons but was never any kind of star. I think that it has definitely helped me through in my early development. Having those basic strokes when you start out makes the process of learning wheelchair tennis a bit easier.

You have travelled to many countries through your sport since 2004, what has been the highlight?

We stock...

...more than just pots!

Beijing was definitely the highlight. It was so much more than just the three weeks that we were there competing in the paralympics. The whole lead up, the excitement of qualifying, the support from the community - there were just so many awesome experiences in the one event. It will be very hard to beat.

What perks came out of you being the runner up of the Goulburn Valley Bachelor of the Year a few years ago? It was actually a really fun event to be involved in. There was a lot of interest from the public. It was quite funny going out in Shepparton and having people come up to you and tell you that they are going to vote for you. I really enjoyed it. My mates still give me heaps about it and it always seems to get bought up in the strangest circumstances. As for the perks- I think that I may have got a few drinks bought for me.

Where did you get your nick name, Pixie?

• Garden Ornaments • alfrescO livinG • POts • Pavers • custOm made OutdOOr kitchens & Water features

I’m not sure how people find out about this but it came from my little sister. I’m not totally sure why she calls me this but it seems to have stuck and now my coach even calls me it. It can be rather embarrassing.

Do you spend a lot of time in your home town of Tatura? I don’t get home as much as my Mum would like but last year I would come home before and after a trip. I did a lot of travelling last year so I was home a few times.

After your motorbike accident what or who inspired you to become a sports star?

EmErald Bank - GV HiGHway kialla Ph: 03 5823 1915 Email: pot-werx@bigpond.com

I’m not sure that inspired would be the right word to use but the encouragement and support that I received from my family, friends, players on the Australian team, the coaching staff and the people involved in the Tatura Football Club was what made it easy for me to keep pushing myself.

The 78 squares of living is spread over two storeys and even the enormous lock up garage provides a space for all weather play and recreation. Much thought has been given by Cheryl to the layout and ease of living in this Sessions built home and many of the design features have been used by Sessions Builders to create a house plan now called “The Hunter”.

“The home was always going to be a bit of fun for me as I used colours I wouldn’t necessarily live in all the time”

“The home was always going to be a bit of fun for me as I used colours I wouldn’t necessarily live in all the time and the surfaces and finishes I have chosen are far more suitable for children and entertaining,” Cheryl says. “I built a lovely 58 square home in Shepparton before my five grandchildren came along and I have learnt a lot about what is suitable. White carpet and marble finishes would never do here.” The kitchen by Shepparton’s Liberty Kitchens has fabulous storage with all panels at the back of the servery bench opening to reveal cupboard space and a high T bar to hide kitchen mess from guests. All window coverings are from Walls & Windows and most of the furniture and wall hangings have been bought in Shepparton at Furniture One and Empire Trading.

Cheryl has built 10 homes over the years and it is obvious she has a flair for design and decorating. “You know it works when you can have five young kids running around here having a ball but the place still looks good,” Cheryl says. And if you would like a piece of this paradise, Cheryl might be able to help you out. She has been asked to sell the house next door which boasts the same lake views and a private jetty “and I get to choose my neighbour at the same time,” she laughs. [hs]

A rambling and prolific flowering soft pink rose is spectacular on the north facing verandah while ornamental grape vines adorn the front and back verandahs. “We didn’t want a traditional English high maintenance garden and I think we have found a nice balance here. We had help with the design and planting of it and a local gardener comes in to help keep it looking good,” Bob says. “We have been in the region for 15 years, 10 years at Creighton’s Creek where we had a hobby farm, so enlisting local knowledge and skilled trades people to help create our home has been wonderful. “We have reversed our lifestyle to base ourselves here instead of Melbourne, and it has given us great variety in our lives.” Bob works from his home office and travels to Melbourne a couple of days a week. Amanda is a health professional in Nagambie. “We always wanted to create a tranquil place where our large family and friends could congregate and we love that we have done that here,” Bob says. [hs]

Stunning & Functional

by Cheryl Hammer

Clever design and professional advice means you can have it all. According to the Oxford dictionary a kitchen ‘is where food is prepared and cooked.’ Straight forward yes, but today’s kitchens are so much more than a cookhouse. They are now an integral part of our lifestyle and in the popular open plan homes, kitchens can be the masterpiece. This stunning kitchen is both minimal and modern exuding well thought out features to cater for a family of four and yet blends beautifully with the rest of the dining/living area. The owners are keen entertainers and love to cook with fresh produce from their garden, so space and practical finishes are very important. The 2 pac satin finish overhead cupboards and drawers on the back wall provide balance to the eye in this wide

drawers are designed to keep everyday items within easy reach of food preparation areas.

The double oven, which boasts a series of top burners for every occasion, is an eye catching feature. Stainless steel was also chosen for the bench top and splash back around the double sink in the large island which separates kitchen and dining. The stainless steel has been rolled as one continuous piece to avoid problems with cleaning joins. The owner admits the steel finish does scratch “but that is the appeal of it.” The fridge, dishwasher and under bench microwave are all stainless steel. Mesh has been used in some cupboard doors to provide contrast and it is also used to cleverly disguise the home’s air conditioning return air duct. Open shelving gives a reason to display favorite items, or in this case the residents’ coffee collection, close to their prized coffee machine. HOMESCAPE Magazine

Builder and co-designer, David Powell, of David Powell Kitchens in Shepparton says the challenge with a large kitchen space is to make sure it looks balanced. “Just filling it with cupboards and storage is not always the answer. Where you place your fridge, dishwasher and even the rubbish bin can make a huge difference,” David says.

So making a kitchen space your own is important and this one has used a striking one-of-a-kind color and design for its granite bench tops sourced by Goulburn Valley Granite, Kialla. The dark olive green granite is speckled with maroon, black, greys and other greens to produce what looks like the bottom of a river. The owners fell in love with it and appreciate that the river-like pattern ties the kitchen to the rest of the property which is on the banks of the Goulburn River. An art deco-like light fitting from the roof has continued the stainless steel theme and the triangle boxed halogen lights under overhead cupboards add a designer touch as well as being practical. The overall design and finishing touches of this kitchen are both functional and beautiful. [hs]

Breathe Life into your Winter Garden by Cheryl Hammer

Autumn is a season of spectacular color and cooler days and some gardeners maybe turning their mind to preparing for the more dormant winter cycle and planting to prepare for their spring displays. Well what if you don’t have to have a dreary winter spell and wait until spring for color and life in the garden? Through sensible and clever planting, gardens in the Northern and North East parts of Victoria can be bright and cheerful and very productive all year.

“Our climate here means our gardens, or certainly not all of our gardens, should have to go to sleep over the winter period. “There are plenty of trees, shrubs and even vegetables we can plant to enjoy their flowers and foliage and their produce right through the autumn and winter months,” John said. “One of the main considerations in our gardens now for protection from both the harsh summer radiation and the winter frosts, is to plant more trees to create a canopy for the plants below. “Shade from trees can provide welcome relief to gardens in all conditions. It creates a more livable climate.” John Holder’s top five picks for trees include the Smooth Bark Apple Myrtle which grows well in this region along with the deciduous White Cedar.

Homescape spoke to local garden guru, John Holder, from Shepparton Garden Centre, to find out what we should be planting to enjoy color and produce from our gardens during these colder months.

The Flinders Range Wattle will provide display as well as protection when established and it can be pruned. A particular favorite is the Crab Apple which flowers in a multitude of colors in winter and its canopy’s width to

height ratio makes it a stand out for home gardens. The Nyssa, commonly known as Tupelo, is a lovely upright tree with spectacular autumn color. Flowering shrubs can also be a feature in winter providing joy to the eye on a grey day. Five of the best for our climate include Correa, a low growing, spreading plant with masses of red cigarette-like flowers which blooms from now through winter and will tolerate long dry conditions.

Correa

Hellebores come in a myriad of colors and are best in dry shade under trees. The clumping plant returns loyally every year for a pretty display. “Winter Cheer” is a winter flowering red hot poker which mass planted, or grown as a feature plant, is an eye catching addition to any garden. Protection from harsh winter frosts is a good idea. Abutilon, or the Chinese Lantern, flowers nearly all year and is best grown beside a wall or fence. It is a favorite in winter gardens but will tolerate hot summers as well.

Fanfare

Gaillardia Goblin variety “Fanfare” has dramatic splashes of orange and yellow on large daisy like flowers with strong grey green foliage. It grows to about 30 cms high and has a long flowering period from now. For the native lovers, the Grevillea “Duea” is a prolific crimson flowering shrub with soft green leaves. A monthly watering is all it needs. And if it is the vegetable garden you give up on in the cold, think again. There are plenty of seeds and seedlings to plant to keep the vege garden productive. Plant cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, lettuce, spring onions

Grevilliea

and silver beet as seed or seedlings and beans, beetroot, carrots, endive, peas and turnips can all be sown now as seeds. Broccoli and celery will thrive from seedlings. Fresh food is one of the biggest bonuses of a productive and well loved garden and with some planning and clever plant choice you can make winter a rewarding and bountiful time of year. Happy gardening!

High quality apartments with

Superior Design by Carmel Johnson

Having spent more than a decade planning and renovating the Nurses Quarters at the old Mooroopna and District Hospital, the dream of providing “state of the art” aged

care facilities for the residents of Greater City of Shepparton will soon be realized.

The sixty seven apartments known as the NQ apartments, have been universally designed to ensure

that they can be easily and comfortably managed by the tenants. Each apartment has “state of the art”

facilities, and the latest safety and security devices

two of the development which will include the refit and the refurbishment of the former main Mooroopna

Hospital building. When completed the building will be a ninety bed aged care facility and will hopefully assist with an increasing demand for aged care beds and facilities in our growing region. Each year the need seems greater” Mr Mackali said. “The final stages which will include over one hundred universal apartments should be ready for occupancy around 2012 and which is not all that far away” Mr Mackali concluded.

Just like you I have been moved firstly with sadness, then despair, and now with conviction to help change the home safety issues that are challenging us because of the places in which we wish to live.

&

Imagine the automotive industry not having such a high safety standard... we wouldn’t stand for that, so why then do we allow our dwellings not to have the same standards and where do we start...

You start with a good designer or consultant who has answers to your questions and facts to back up their statements.

i n

You could be forgiven for not listening, or reading on, when words like environmental safety, green or energy efficient statements are used. The truth is they are thrown around with such ease and sometimes with not much understanding of what they actually mean.

D e s i g n :

ECO

...is not a dirty word

O u t

“Let’s create designs and solve environmental problems at the same time!”

Now let’s talk dirty… What solar protection can I get for my home? As always the first line of defence against the sun is screening, so use good quality solar paint and create a barrier between you and the sun with quality awnings and shade sails.

Will energy efficient window coverings really help to keep my energy bills down? Yes, the right fabrics and the right coverings will help. Products such as drapes with pelmets have been proven to reduce power consumption but they must be installed and maintained correctly.

Is it true that carpet underlays are made from recycled old car tyres? Yes, this is the case with some carpet underlays which makes it more luxurious to walk on.

Can I have fire retardant fabrics in my home? Yes, you will be pleasantly surprised with the range of fabrics and prices and Australia leads the world with some of these. Drapes n Décor was created to service the environmental needs of the interior and exterior as well as the commercial aspects of our dwellings. We can make a difference to the environment. Our window furnishings, colour consultancy and room design have this in mind.
