What Being Part of PROJECT CATALYST means to us, by Brokentalkers It is hard to imagine Brokentalkers existing in the form it does now without Project Arts Centre. Our relationship started back in 2001 when we were invited to present our university graduation piece at the centre. Since then it has continued to grow and flourish as part of PROJECT CATALYST under the guidance of Willie White, and at times it has felt like Willie has been the third member of Brokentalkers. Project Arts Centre’s backing and the faith they have shown in us has given us the confidence to make the type of work we want to make and has given us time to grow as artists. PROJECT CATALYST supports Brokentalkers in many ways; through advice, administrative support, drafting and management of budgets, cash flow, payroll and much more. As well as practical support from the initiative Project Arts Centre has also supported our work financially by producing, co producing and with vast amounts of support in kind. This has allowed us to continue to deliver high quality work and also to be able pay those involved in the work properly. Their support has helped us to create new work but also to present work abroad. They have assisted us in the organisation of several international tours, bringing our work to places including New York, Paris, Finland and Holland. They take care of difficult negotiations and make sure that things run smoothly so that we have time to focus on our work. PROJECT CATALYST is such a vital initiative because it nurtures contemporary artists and companies. Project Arts Centre is an integral part of Irish performing arts, through its support for independent artists and new work and its commitment to presenting high quality International companies in Ireland, it provides audiences with a variety of performance experiences. Because Project Arts Centre works quietly behind the scenes, getting on with the job at hand and doesn't go round blowing its own trumpet, it tends to go unsung but its impact on a new generation of artists is very clear to see. Without them Irish theatre would be a very lacklustre place. To find out how you can make a difference to artists and support the work of PROJECT CATALYST contact melanie@projectartscentre.ie

KING RAT A dark and menacing exhibition, originally inspired by all things Gothic, King Rat presents a series of artworks by some of visual art’s most original international voices. The gallery will transform into a space filled with a sense of unease and discomfort, the stuff that nightmares are made of. A carpet made of thousands of black pieces of paper will create a striking landscape from where sculptures rise, tapestries loom, text speaks and paintings hover above.

THEATRE/PERFORMANCE

ABSOLUT FRINGE 2010 11 – 26 SEPTEMBER

Dublin’s most eclectic festival is back with a new batch of shows set to provoke, inspire and entertain. The programme is still under wraps for now but we’ve persuaded them to share some of the highlights that’ll be coming to Project Arts Centre as part of the festival fun. Here’s just a selection of what’s on offer; keep an eye out for the full programme of events which will be revealed on 18 August.

TRILOGY Fresh from emphatic reviews during its run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2009, Trilogy takes its joyous show to Dublin. Imbued with raw, relentless energy, and featuring up to 50 naked female volunteer dancers, it is a disarming and buoyant exploration of what it means to be a woman today.

THE NEXT TWO DAYS OF EVERYTHING From an almost empty stage, a smith offers some everyday stories of travel, oil, weather, war, sustainability and survival. This lecture style performance presents stories that think about how we are doing; stories that approach some big questions in a small and human way.

JERK Meet David Brooks, accomplice to serial killer Dean Corll in the real life murder of more than twenty boys in Texas during the seventies. Brooks re-imagines the horrific crimes using puppets in this startling performance. The result - an invariably strange and sombre, poetic and captivating performance, like nothing you’ve ever seen. Directed by Gisèle Vienne | Text by cult author Dennis Cooper.

AS YOU ARE NOW, SO ONCE WERE WE Why haven’t you read Ulysses? The most important Irish work of the last century is also the most unknown. Why? Spirit of the Fringe 2009 award winner The Company are back and this time they’re delving into the most significant unread book in Irish history. Following James Joyce as he invents a whole city and its people they ask - where are YOU in this story? This year The Company will rediscover what it means to be Irish. The Company are part of PROJECT CATALYST, an initiative of Project Arts Centre.

Fancy seeing yourself in this year’s festival? To find out how you could be one of the 50 dancers featured in Trilogy contact kate@fringefest.com
