Artistic Director’s Welcome Welcome to Project Arts Centre and our last ever printed brochure. Our new digital brochure, available from August 2012, will be bigger and better. Project Arts Centre is leading the field by taking this step, supporting the environment and recognising the way you, our audience and supporters, like to hear about our programme, exhibitions, artists and special offers. 2011 was a busy year for us; we presented over 620 events, employed over 400 artists and had over 80,000 visitors through the door. I’m hoping that 2012 will be even busier and this season is a rich mixture of artists and art-forms, reflecting the breath of work being developed and presented by the artists who call ‘Project’ their home. One event that I am particularly looking forward to is our collaboration with ABSOLUT Fringe – Turn Around is a new season of work presented in repertory. We have hand-picked 5 companies, new to Project Arts Centre, whose work debuted in Fringes past. This is a fantastic opportunity to revisit some ABSOLUT Fringe classics and for us to experiment with a new model of presentation for performance. I am delighted to welcome these 5 superb artists to Project Arts Centre. I am also pleased to see PROJECT CATALYSTS Brokentalkers and junk ensemble taking to stage of the Space Upstairs as part of this year’s Dublin Dance Festival showcasing their work alongside a host of talented international artists. Our 38 PROJECT CATALYST artists have a sensational array of projects lined up for the coming months – look out for updates from me and on our website. In the gallery, our fabulously theatrical solo-show Panto-Collapsar by Australian artist Mikala Dwyer continues until the end of March before we welcome guest curator Vaari Claffey with A MacGuffin and Other Things - an experimental group exhibition featuring a host of Irish and international artists embarking a flirtatious search for the object. Throughout summer 2012 Project Arts Centre will embark on one of its most ambitious visual art exhibition programmes ever. Opening in July 2012 it will feature installations in all three of our spaces – including Terrestris a major installation by talented Irish artist Sam Keogh in the vast Space Upstairs. I am currently planning a programme of special performance events and club nights that will run in conjunction with the exhibition. I am thrilled to be presenting an exhibition on this scale, affirming Project Arts Centre’s commitment to the Visual Arts and also to the development of the careers of young Irish artists in an international context. In the light of continued cuts to our resources Project Arts Centre needs you more than ever to help us maintain our commitment to the hundreds of artists whom we employ and support each year. Please continue to buy tickets, visit our gallery, or become a Project Fan or a Project Person. We need your support! Project Arts Centre is as an artist centred space but we are nothing without you; our audience and our friends, you are the true measure of our success and I hope to meet many of you at events here over the coming year. THEATRE/DANCE

Sunday’s Child MY BEST FRIEND DROWNED IN A SWIMMING POOL When Henry cracks his head off a concrete sculpture and drowns in a swimming pool his friends are left floundering. They each reach for their own coping mechanisms, but soon realise that they are insufficient: chain smoking, reciting decades of the rosary, taking recreational narcotics, bitching, and trashing IKEA furniture will never fill the void of a dead best friend. In Henry’s absence they are drowning too, and their strategies for staying afloat are intriguing, exasperating and heart-breaking. Edinburgh Fringe hit My Best Friend Drowned in a Swimming Pool is a dark, witty drama which delves in to friendship, love and loss. A clever combination of dance, theatre and music presents the harsh reality of youth, a place where darkness and humour collide to provide an insightful critique of the society we live in. “…a star in the making; beauty and charisma allied with raw natural talent” ThreeWeeks (Edinburgh Festival Review) on writer Eva O’Connor There will be a post-show discussion following the performance on Friday 11 May. Blue Raincoat Theatre Company THE CHAIRS In a lighthouse on the edge of civilisation an old man and an old woman are waiting. They await the arrival of the town’s people to their home. Everyone, from the Mayor to the Blacksmith, the Colonel to the Courtesan will be there. It is possible the Emperor himself may attend. Because tonight, after a long life of bewilderment and underachievement, the old man has finally decided to tell all. He will reveal who he really is, what he should really have become, and, ultimately impart the secret of what life is really all about - a message that may indeed have the power to save humanity! Eugene Ionesco’s The Chairs is one of the most merciless and unrelenting interrogations of life and living ever written for the stage; a mind-spinning tragic farce, that is at once as heartbreaking as it is hilarious. AND IN THE GALLERY… A MACGUFFIN AND SOME OTHER THINGS 12 APRIL – 16 JUNE 2012 Curated by Vaari Claffey Our next exhibition the group show A MacGuffin and Some Other Things uses a mix of video, sculptural installations and performance to investigate the role of the object, and its function, or consequence, in relation to a script. The gallery will be split horizontally to create two viewing levels, a forced division between the films, performed work and sculptural objects. Like a ‘MacGuffin’, in our story the physical divide becomes the object around which the show orbits but whose intrinsic role is not at its core. The exhibition includes work by Lucy Andrews,¸ Isıl Egrikavuk, David Hall, Alice Rekab, and Judith Scott. In collaboration with the exhibition the IFI will present a series of free screenings of Claffey’s curatorial film work at 1.10pm on 17 & 19-22 April 2012. For more information visit www.ifi.ie

Visual Art

AND NEXT UP FROM VISUAL ARTS… For the first time since the opening exhibition of the building in 2000, visual arts will take over the entire space to present three unique exhibitions and our most ambitious project to date. One of Ireland’s most promising young artists Sam Keogh will transform the Space Upstairs from a performance space to a giant gallery filled with sculpture on an enormous scale. What wonders do the origins of the earth hold? What secrets will be discovered if we excavate our foundation? Set around a huge mound of prehistoric earth Keogh will present a series of sculptures emerging from the earth, an imaginative archeological investigation into our very beginnings. The Cube will play host to a number of artworks - light, sound and video installations - that will play with the notion of ‘appartatus’ within a theatrical setting. In the final piece of the exhibition a number of sculptural artworks will play out side by side in the gallery. These exhibitions will be accompanied and interrupted by a series of talks and specially commissioned performances, programmed by Project Arts Centre Director Cian O’Brien. For further information visit projectartscentre.ie. Runs from 3 July until 4 August Admission to all spaces - free
