Artistic Director’s Welcome Welcome to Project Arts Centre and my first season as Artistic Director. In 2011 over 80,000 people visited Project Arts Centre; we presented over 620 events between our performing arts and gallery spaces and employed over 400 artists. I have only just taken up the position of Artistic Director but I know the place well as I came to shows as a child and I’ve also produced and presented work in the centre over the past seven years. Project Arts Centre is not only the home for the independent sector it is also the only space where emerging artists, both young and old, can find their voice and hone their craft. For me, Project Arts Centre is an essential part of the cultural life of our city (nation even) and I am very much looking forward to commissioning, producing and programming work to engage all our present fans as well as people who have yet to discover us. The programme at Project Arts Centre for January-March is a rich mixture of artists and art-forms, reflecting the breath of work being developed and presented by the artists who call ‘Project’ their home. We welcome the return of artists who have presented here many times as well as emerging artists with new things to say and new ways of saying it. Later in 2012, we look forward to welcoming back artists and companies such as choreographer Ella Clarke presenting a new work and Rough Magic Theatre Company’s new production by acclaimed writer Morna Regan. Dublin Dance Festival will programme an array of exciting works new to Dublin audiences, Vaari Claffey will curate an expansive new group show in our Gallery and in April, we will embark on a major three week collaboration with Dublin Fringe Festival. Project Arts Centre is an artist centred space but we are nothing without you; our audience and our friends. This is a place where the artistic community meets the public and each other and I hope over the coming years to charm, thrill, engage and challenge you with some of the best Irish and international work, presenting to you our great artists and also introducing you to the great artists of the future. On behalf of all the staff, we wish you a happy and prosperous New Year and look forward to welcoming you back to Project Arts Centre in 2012. Cian O’Brien Artistic Director

When Agamemnon returns in triumph Clytemnestra appears to have forgotten her vow of vengeance and greets him with shows of overwhelming joy. But her true intent is yet to be revealed; when she invites her husband to enter the palace on a river of bloodred cloth a great foreboding fills the hearts of the city elders. The Apparition of a Subtraction, by Mikala Dwyer

Last of the Red Wine (the prequel/sequel) Bedwyr Williams, The Jynx, installation, image by Denis Mortell

Visual Art

AND IN THE GALLERY… THE LAST OF THE RED WINE (THE PREQUEL/SEQUEL) RUNS UNTIL 14 Jan 2012 | ADMISSION FREE Doug Fishbone, Hayley Newman, Kim Noble, Sally O’Reilly, Michelle Owoo, Colin Perry, Caroline Smith and Bedwyr Williams Curated by Tessa Giblin and Sally O’Reilly What sort of artists would allow themselves to be involved in a sitcom based in the art world? Early in 2011 an unlikely group of artists, comedians and writers worked together on The Last of the Red Wine, a radio sitcom based in the artworld. Used to being the subject of their own work, the collaborators instead cast themselves in a collective farce, written and performed in the course of one week. The Last of the Red Wine (the prequel/sequel) is the next instalment of the sitcom. Dissecting the mix of people and personalities involved in the original project it examines the processes of selfrepresentation in their individual practices through a collection of videos, audio, photographs and sculptural installation that ridicules, jokes and pokes fun at the colourful sitcom character. PANTO COLLAPSAR BY MIKALA DWYER 27 JAN - 24 MAR 2012 | ADMISSION FREE Curated by Tessa Giblin ‘An exploded and bewitched house with a floating roof’ – this is how Australian artist Mikala Dwyer describes her solo exhibition, an exhibition that marks the first time her work will be shown in Ireland. Superstition, ritual and clairvoyancy collide as Dwyer investigates the relationships that people develop with objects. Through the work she ascribes deep symbolic meaning to the artifacts exhibited, evoking them as spiritual signifiers. The installation will include a variation on one of her most recognizable sculptures, as well as an actual floating ceiling. You are welcome to join us for the opening of the exhibition on Thursday 26 January 2012 from 6pm to 8pm. Supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body COMING NEXT TO THE GALLERY… Our next exhibition the group show A MacGuffin and Other Things is presented by guest curator, Vaari Claffey. Using a mix of video, sculptural installations and performance the artists will investigate the idea of ‘MacGuffin’, an object that features in a film and serves to keep the plot moving despite at first appearing to lack real importance.
