WHAT ARE THE PROJECT CATALYSTS UP TO NOW… PROJECT CATALYST and Theatre Director in Residence Annabelle Comyn is working with five young directors, Tom Creed, Maeve Stone, Maisie Lee, Lianne O'Shea and Edwina Casey, on The Power of Words, a workshop in directing. So far they have taken part in a week long practical workshop led by Annabelle. They spent day one around the table and the next four on their feet, working on contemporary classic Top Girls by Caryl Churchill and also Martin Crimp’s The City. The feedback from the participants has been really positive. Three of the participants presented work as part of The Theatre Machine Turns You On: Vol II and all found the experience of the workshop really useful in developing their work. It doesn’t stop there for them. Annabelle’s been visiting them in the rehearsal room at dress rehearsal stage to engage with them on ways to further develop their work and directing style, as well as arranging several theatre trips and engaging them in discussion and debate. They’ll be involved in a series of post show discussion with director’s and artists here at Project Arts Centre over the coming months so keep an eye out for them. The next stage of the workshop will involve each director developing a twenty minute piece with professional actors offering them an opportunity, mentored by Annabelle, to explore their response to a text. Annabelle will start work on these one-to-one workshops with them later in the year but for now they are working on finalising their script choices ahead of casting the pieces. It will be a busy few months for Annabelle and the directors and we look forward to seeing how they get on. This opportunity is being offered through The Arts Council’s Theatre Artist in Residence Scheme in association with Dublin City Council Arts Office and Project Arts Centre. Annabelle Comyn is Artistic Director of HATCH Theatre Company and is part of PROJECT CATALYST, an initiative of Project Arts Centre. CEAL FLOYER

THINGS The gallery is filled with a collection of identical plinths – a wonderful white, endless sculpture. But these structures, commonly used for the display of objects, stand unusually empty, starkly white in a starkly white room. The objects are replaced by a beguilingly simple soundscape, as the word ‘thing’ sampled from a range of pop songs pings and chimes around the room. Ceal Floyer became known in the mid-1990s for her ultra minimal multimedia works involving the humblest possible material means: subtle experiments and interventions using everyday objects.

BLOOD WEDDING It’s 1928 and in the dusty heat of the Andalusian province of Almería, a young bride abandons her husband-to-be on the morning of her wedding to elope with her childhood sweetheart. In a society obsessed with reputation and honour the actions of one person can divide a community. With the town in crisis the elopers are hunted down with terrifying consequences. Blood Wedding is a true story set to an original score with a cast of more than twenty actors, a translation which captures the fierce energy, dramatic tension and lyrical intensity of Lorca’s original drama. Strobe lighting is used in this production.

SARAH BROWNE Sarah Browne’s new film installation focuses on the small French town of Le Blanc, where a coalition of local artisans and shopkeepers have created one of the last refuges for indigenous currencies. Le Blanc is still accepting the franc as payment for goods and services in certain shops, although it is technically no longer legal tender, and will continue to accept it until 17 February 2012, a deadline imposed by the Banque de France. Produced against a backdrop of extreme economic vulnerability, both internationally and in Ireland, Browne’s project hones in on a community story that becomes the lens through which to examine the depth of emotional investment and resistance to change, in economic systems. Sarah Browne is part of PROJECT CATALYST, an initiative of Project Arts Centre. Sarah Browne has been supported by a Project Award from the Arts Council. The new commission by Project Arts Centre is being co-produced in partnership with Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, and Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, and will include a catalogue to be launched in 2012 CURATED BY TESSA GIBLIN

BLOODKNOT Bloodknot tells the story of two half brothers trapped in the madness of South Africa’s apartheid. Morris is light-skinned enough to pass for white, unlike Zach who is unmistakably black. Living together in a tumbledown shack, after years of estrangement and betrayal, they wrestle with the terms of their fate and dreams — and long-simmering tensions explode over a woman. Bloodknot holds a mirror up to the soul-searing effects of racism while exploring the inextricable bond between brothers, and by extension, all humanity Suitable ages 14+

TOXIC In 2004 Britney sang Toxic and we blagged our way into clubs with fake IDs and sculled pints and Bacardi Breezers. The future was rosy, so we danced our arses off and sucked the faces off each other and worried about the kind of things that kids worry about. And then, while our backs were turned, it all went wrong. A fast-paced and wild-eyed production set in contemporary post-boom Dublin. Performed by an ensemble of eighteen young actors Toxic is a new play with a karaoke-style pop vibe, which examines betrayal and the interaction between public ethics and personal morality. Suitable ages 16+ contains some strong language and adult themes.

Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth A2.4 billion directly a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, for 2011 is A65.2 million, that’s around 80 cents a week for every household.

So, at the end of your next inspirational encounter with the arts, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at
