WHAT BEING PART OF PROJECT CATALYST MEANS TO ME BY FEARGHUS Ó CONCHÚIR In January this year, I presented an extract of a work called Niche to a New York audience that included Mikhail Baryshnikov, Douglas Sonntag (Director of Dance at the National Endowment of the Arts) and a host of international programmers and promoters. The showcase, which I shared with three other Irish companies, was funded by Culture Ireland but my participation in it would not have been possible without the practical support of PROJECT CATALYST. I am a freelance choreographer. I don’t have regular funding and therefore don’t have an administration team of my own, as it doesn’t make economic sense. Being part of PROJECT CATALYST, however, I have, when I need it, access to and support from the highly experienced team at Project Arts Centre. In the case of our New York showcase, that meant booking flights and accommodation for the company, liaising with the dancers, agreeing their conditions and payment, ensuring all tax is paid, and maintaining proper accounting of finances so that I can demonstrate responsible use of public subsidy. All this work is very time consuming and by taking it on, Project Arts Centre freed me to concentrate on getting the choreography and the performance right. When budgets are already tight, the contribution of staff time and cash flow that the PROJECT CATALYST provides makes the difference between whether a project is viable or not. But all this talk of money and resources doesn’t really reflect the value of PROJECT CATALYST. My work is varied in nature and scale. It ranges from film projects to site-specific installations and theatre performances. It has happened in Ireland, China, UK and the US. It is important to me, in all this exciting variety and in the uncertainty that comes with it, to have a base and a home. I know that Project Arts Centre has my back. It is my artistic home. It will provide the practical help I need when it’s possible, but the team there also provides me with moral support, with artistic challenge, with a cup of tea and wise words when I need them. Being part of this initiative has helped my work and me immeasurably.

Fearghus Ó Conchúir is part of PROJECT CATALYST, an initiative of Project Arts Centre To find out how you can make a difference to artists and support the work of PROJECT CATALYST contact melanie@projectartscentre.ie *PROJECT CATALYST was formerly known as the Associate Artist programme.

AION EXPERIMENTS The public are invited to participate in Aion Experiments. These experiments differ greatly from past experiments in which volunteers remained under close observation for long periods. For the duration of this exhibition several devices highly charged with biofield energy have been installed in the gallery. The organisers request that members of the public planning to attend this experiment prepare physically and mentally in advance, and also wish to notify visitors that effects of this experiment may only become apparent in the weeks following the event. …at that point my colleagues and I began experiencing the first of several extreme onsets. None of us spoke at the time but discussion afterwards revealed that each of us present in the room were somehow quietly convinced that we were entering a higher level of consciousness… - participant of one of the first Aion Experiments (Aion 01B) 1943. Artist Robin Watkins will present The Luminiferous Aether, a free music event to accompany this exhibition, on 9 April at 5pm & 7pm. Spaces are limited – contact Box Office to reserve your place.

ARTISTS: MORRIS/TRASOV ARCHIVE, SAM KEOGH, TAKESHI MURATA, ULF ROLLOF, CIARÁN WALSH AND ROBIN WATKINS CURATED BY PADRAIC E. MOORE

KAYTA SANDER

A LANDSCAPE OF UNKNOWN FACTS A newly commissioned solo exhibition that explores the complex and historical world of spectatorship. Adopting the early special effects technique of matte painting, Sander uses and quotes the visual intricacies associated with illusion, while critically examining the personal motivation of consumers who participate in spectator industries. Tourism, audiences, the traveller and the curious are all characters who take time out of everyday life and pay to see things. The gallery will be transformed into a single, circular screen, providing a constantly changing and looping landscape. Sander contrasts the simplicity of matte painting with the complexity of the current economic unknowns that form the background to many of our lives. Katya Sander has been commissioned as part of PROJECT CATALYST, a Project Arts Centre initiative.
