| FALL/WINTER 2021-22

welcome WE ARE ONE COMMUNITY Dear Woodhaven Residents, We hope you had a fun and enjoyable summer. The recreation staff was thrilled to be able to offer programs and services again on a regular basis. The ballfields were filled with kids all summer, the community center was buzzing with senior citizen activities and the school park sites were active Monday through Friday with hundreds of school age children enjoying a multitude of activities. As we turn to the wonderful fall season in southeast Michigan, the department will be offering many new and time honored indoor and outdoor programs. Our goal is to continue building and expanding recreation offerings with a focus on promoting activities that are fun and healthy. There is a famous quote that reminds us of the importance of recreation, “The most successful people I know create superior results yet still maintain a balance among work, family, and recreation in their lives.” The parks and recreation department staff members are honored to serve the residents and committed to working hard to provide quality programs, services and facilities. If you don’t see a program or activity in this guide, we invite you to visit our website at woodhavenmi.org. To register for a class or activity, please visit woodhavenrec.activityreg.com. Please let us know what you think of the service and how we can continue to improve.

Ninja Skillz is a Martial Arts program that targets the stages of development in a manner that adapts to their social and intellectual curiosity while at the same time building skills that set them up for success. With that said a structured program introducing basic skill-based training in Martial Arts has proven to be very successful. By understanding the stages of development of 4 and 5-year olds, we were able to select 8 age-appropriate skills that make up the program: Focus, Teamwork, Control, Memory, Balance, Discipline, Fitness, Coordination. Trips and new activities are announced at the Business Meeting each month and are open to the Club members for 2 weeks. If the trip has not filled up in those 2 weeks, it is then opened to the public. Don’t miss out on these wonderful opportunities to meet new friends and experience new adventures! Our School District ABOUT

WBEF Today it’s more important than ever to come together as a community — which is what the Woodhaven-Brownstown Education Foundation is all about: Community. Founded on the premise that it takes an entire community to support education, the Foundation was created to provide an avenue for businesses and members of our community to contribute to the education of our children — and to strengthen the future of our school district. With funds it raises through donations and special events, the WBEF has awarded more than $260,000 in grants over the past nine years to district teachers for creative and exciting educational opportunities. In addition, some of the awardwinning school programs the WBEF have funded include School/Parent Partnerships, FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics, Elementary Reading Initiatives, Teen Entrepreneur Software and No Child Without a Lunch. Please consider donating to the Foundation. Our community thanks you!

In today’s busy world, the need to stay connected has become part of daily life. It’s become especially important for parents who need to stay in touch with their children – not only about their social lives, but also about their scholastic lives. To that end, our district has a number of ways to stay in touch electronically with our students, our parents, and our community. First, of course, is our newly designed district website: mywbsd.org This site hosts core district information, as well as links to every school and program within our community. Drop downs and clickable links can put you in touch with whatever program or service you need. But our digital footprint doesn’t end with our website. Parents can use our special parent portal to check the status of their students’ progress in real time.

Maple Grove Virtual School Since 20212, our district has offered an alternative to our traditional high school: Maple Grove Virtual School. A completely online high school, Maple Grove offers a full slate of courses designed to get any student through to graduation. Students enrolled in Maple Grove not only complete courses at their own pace, but they're also able to take AP courses that grant college credit. To date, more than 150 students have graduated from Maple Grove.

Learning and Leading for Tomorrow

In addition, our staff offers face-to-face and digital support to each student. Students in Maple Grove who want to pursue vocational training can also enroll in the DCTC program (see story below). Besides the non-traditional student, Maple Grove is an ideal fit for home-schooled students whose parents otherwise need to get their own state-approved lesson plans and programs.

ABOUT

Our Schools & DCTC In order to get a jump on the kinds of jobs that may be available to them after they graduate, many WB students take advantage of one of the most unique programs in the nation: The Downriver Career Technical Consortium (DCTC). Founded in 1965, the DCTC offers a way for local districts to share vocational education programs. Today, the DCTC consists of nine local districts that share more than 32 programs.

Learning and Leading for Tomorrow

Woodhaven High School is home to courses in business management, dental technology, finance, marketing, graphics communications, welding and cosmetology. Many DCTC programs offer college credit, some offer state licensure, most provide math and visual and applied arts credit and some provide science credit. To learn more about how your student could benefit from a DCTC enhanced experience, visit: dctc-cte.org

ABOUT

COLLEGE BOUND In 2016, the WBSD partnered with Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) to offer an Early/Middle College (EMC) program. ECM is a blend of high school and college courses leading to a tuition-free associate degree while still in high school. We are proud to announce that one student has successfully earned EMT certification and at the end of the 201920 school year, 26 students will have successfully earned their high school diploma as well as an associate degree. We are proud to report that, to date, the WBSD program is WCCCD’s largest EMC program. Our students are taking full advantage of this unique opportunity, and the EMC program is one of the district’s greatest successes.

In the ninth and 10th grades, students take both district and college courses at the same time, with the latter taught by college staff at PH Middle School and WHS. In 11th and 12th grades, students take courses at WHS and on the college’s Taylor campus. The student would finish up his or her college degree courses the first year out of high school and then receive both a high school diploma and an associate degree. In addition to the free tuition, the district provides books, fees and supplies to all students. If accepted into the program students and their parents will attend an orientation prior to actually joining the program. To learn more, contact Curriculum Director Stacy Vespremi at:
