Reflective Finishing on Stainless Steel A very popular finish on Stainless Steel sheet is a ‘bright or ‘mirror’ finish. This produces a reflective surface without the use of abrasives, and is suitable for a variety of applications. The low surface roughness means it is ideal for marine applications and other areas where smoothness is a priority. Under BS EN 10088-2 this is deemed a 2P finish, replacing the No. 7 and No. 8 specifications under BS 1449. The BS EN 10088-2 specification as published by the BSSA reads; Bright polished. Non-directional, reflective. Can specify maximum surface roughness. The best surface for corrosion resistance. A maximum surface roughness of 0.1µm. This of course doesn’t give much practical information to those who plan to design and work with reflective finishes and as such the industry has developed codes of practice with regard to reflective finishes to assist designers and fabricators alike. As the finishes are produced with mops and compounds whilst there is not a grain direction, as there is with finishes produced with abrasive media, there is still a polishing direction and faint mop marks are visible in the surface. Most inspection criteria within the stainless steel industry views the polished finish at a minimum of 1 mtr and at this point they would not be visible. It is worth bearing in mind that a reflective finish does not remove any surface stock and defects may be revealed in the surface during the polishing process depending on the surface quality of the substrate. We offer three different reflective finishes all conforming to BS EN 10088-2, to ensure that you can choose the best finish for the best value for money for your project.
Bright or Mirror Polish Produced with mops and compounds with a low Ra of approx 0.05µm. On standard mill produced sheet the surface has reflectivity at 58—62% taken at 60 degrees. UltraBright Polish Produced with mops and compounds with a low Ra of less than 0.05µ. On standard mill produced sheet the surface has reflectivity at approximately 61-65% taken at 60 degrees. UltraMarine Polish Produced with mops and compounds with a low Ra of less than 0.05µm. On standard mill produced sheet the surface has reflectivity at approximately 70% taken at 60 degrees. We are happy to measure and certify the reflective finish you choose.
