When building anything it is always best to start with a good foundation. It will be difficult for any to argue that there is a much better one to start with than this reigning and two time World Champion. Not only did he win his second consecutive WNFR title in 2017, he also added a new arena record of 91.5 points in the process and once again won the most money of any of the top 15 BB riders. In four previous appearances at the showcase event of the PRCA he has won $514,511 and has averaged $162,000 over the past three years.

Hometown: Zwingle, Iowa Key Win: Ram NCFR Kissimmee, FL WNFR Qualifications: 5

Caleb Bennett

$$

From April First through mid-August Caleb Bennett was the number one man in the Ram World Standings for all but one week and is not far behind now considering that 10 contestants went to more rodeos than he did, some as much as 25% more. But was he ever proficient when he did go, placing at 69% of the events he entered, nearly 10% more than the next closest and he tied for the most events to place at. He had his best WNFR a year ago placing in seven gorounds and for the fifth time in the aggregate.

Hometown: Tremonton, UT Key Win: Austin, TX WNFR Qualifications: 7

Clayton Biglow

Although this man didn’t do quite as well last year than he did in his rookie campaign at the WNFR, he is second best among contestants at 30% of the time he has won first or second in a go-round in Las Vegas. He won the second highest amount of money from April 1st moving 18 spots in the Ram World Standings and is coming off winning the Ram California Circuit Finals where he also won two go-rounds. During the year he won first or second at more than 30% of the rodeos he entered while sharing the third highest number of rides over 80 points and the second highest 90 point rides.

Hometown: Clements, CA Key Win: Ram CACFR Lancaster, CA WNFR Qualifications: 3

Orin Larsen

Bill Tutor

This talented Canadian has to be considered one of the hottest men going heading into the WNFR. Over the last two months of the season he won the most money, half of his season total, to jump nine places in the Ram World Standings. He may have only had the fifth best riding percentage among rodeos held in the states, however he put it all out there every time which accounted for the highest percentage of rides over 80 points, 82% of the time the gate swung. He closed out the year winning the aggregate at the Wrangler Tour Finale, Pendleton Round-Up, and St. George, UT with seven of eight rides over 80 points.

Hometown: Inglis, MB Key Win: Pendleton, OR WNFR Qualifications: 4 During the year when it was all or nothing he tallied the second highest amount of victories at one go-round events including 91.5 points to win Albuquerque, NM and 86.5 points to share the title at Amarillo, TX to end the year. He shared the highest number of rides over 90 points and the fifth highest total over 80 points on his way to earning his second trip to the WNFR where he placed in five go-rounds and the aggregate a year ago and is one of only two men among the top 15 that has a 100% success rate there.

Hometown: Huntsville, TX Key Win: Nampa, ID WNFR Qualifications: 2

Richmond Champion

Some people say that winning second makes you try harder. If that’s the case watch out for Richmond Champion. In 2017 he was the NFR reserve champion for the second time and came within $2,000 of winning the most money, placing seven times including winning two go-rounds. No one was better the last month of the season as he climbed five spots while winning the most money, 30% of his total. He tied for the most 90 point rides on the year, one coming to win the Wrangler Tour Finale. At the WNFR he is the only other man in the field with a 100% success rate and has average $111,800 a year in earnings.

Hometown: The Woodlands, TX Key Win: Wrangler TF Puyallup, WA WNFR Qualifications:4

Kaycee Feild $

Sitting in the middle of the field, this four time World Champion and WNFR winner may very well be the best value there is. He certainly has been before, five times the highest money winner, has helped him total $925,000 in Las Vegas earnings. With 21 go-round wins among the 59 times he has placed, it is a whopping 73% success rate whenever he nods. Although 10 men went to more rodeos during the year he recorded the third highest total of rides over 80 points, 78% of his attempts. He won more than 60% of his money the last two months of the season moving up five spots in the Ram World Standings.

This former Resistol All Around and Bareback Riding Rookie of the Year stayed solid all year despite going to less than the average number of rodeos of the top 15, due in part to having the third best riding percentage. He finished the season with the third highest number of times to finish either first or second at one go-round in rodeos after coming off of one of his best WNFR’s where he won a go-round, was second in another, placed in two more and the aggregate. Among his best rides on the year was a 90 point marking at Albuquerque, NM and 89.5 points at the Wrangler Tour in Prescott, AZ and also at Kalispell, MT.

Hometown: Mullen, NE Key Win: Clovis, CA - Wr Tour WNFR Qualifications: 9

Jake Brown

To say that Jake Brown is due is an understatement, and after going to the third fewest rodeos, yet placing at the third highest percentage will hopefully for Jake Brown make this the year so many people know he is capable of having. He shared the fifth highest number of rides over 80 points which ranked third best at 82% of his qualified rides. He recorded four of those 80 point rides with go-round wins at the All American Finals and the Ram Texas Circuit Finals, where he won the aggregate and closed the year with 88 points to win the final Wrangler Tour Rodeo at Kennewick, WA and a pair of them to place at the Tour Finale.

Hometown: Cleveland, Texas Key Win: Ram TXCFRWaco, TX WNFR Qualifications: 4

Mason Clements

Although he went to the second fewest rodeos of this year’s contestants he jumped five spots from his qualifying position of a year ago thanks in part to having the fourth best riding percentage. He enjoyed early success scoring 90 points to win the finals at San Antonio, TX then shared the final round win at 86 points at the Ram National Circuit Finals in Kissimmee, FL allowing him the luxury of not having to travel so hard at the end of the year. The winner of two go-rounds at the 2017 WNFR returns to the place of his birth knowing he can improve upon that.

Hometown: Santaquin, Utah Key Win: San Antonio, TX WNFR Qualifications: 2

Tilden Hooper

Ty Breuer

The former Resistol Rookie of the Year and College National Champion recorded the second highest total number of rides over 80 points while having the fifth best ratio of placing at 55% of the rodeos he entered. Among those rides over 80 was a 90.5 point score at San Juan Capistrano, CA, to solidify his fifth appearance at the WNFR. With the pressure off he finished the last month of the season placing at 25% of his total rodeos including winning Amarillo and Pasadena, TX. He last competed at the WNFR four years ago placing in six go-rounds and the aggregate.

Hometown: Carthage, TX Key Win: San Juan Capistrano, CA WNFR Qualifications: 5 Like hitting a hole in one on the golf course, scoring over 90 points at the WNFR should make anyone want to get back on the playing field. Fortunately for Ty Breuer he has earned that opportunity after another stellar season and has gotten his momentum going just like a year ago as he just finished winning his third consecutive and fourth overall Ram Badlands Circuit Finals title. As one of the most consistent contestants all year Breuer never wavered once he had established his position in early spring.

Hometown: Mandan, ND Key Win: Ram BadCFR-Minot, ND WNFR Qualifications: 4

Shane O’Connell

After undergoing two years of near misses, 2016 reserve Rookie of the Year and finishing 19th last year, Shane O’Connell was determined to make the third year the charm. Knowing the consistency is the mark of champions he was the only contestant to have a 100% riding success rate at rodeos in the states. He jumped into contention early on by sharing the high marked ride at the finals of the All American Finals in Waco, TX. Two of his biggest wins came back to back in July to nearly guarantee him a top 15 spot, winning Edmonton, AB and sharing the final round win at Cheyenne, WY scoring 88 points.

Hometown: Rapid City, SD Key Win: Edmonton, AB WNFR Qualifications: 1

Wyatt Denny

Will Lowe

To qualify for his third consecutive WNFR Wyatt Denny made one of the biggest jumps of anyone once May rolled around. Winning nearly 90% of his season total since then allowed him to jump 26 spots in the Ram World Standings. Wyatt was determined to get back to Las Vegas and turn things around from a year ago when he was only able to place in one go-round. That was after 2016 when in his rookie year he placed five times. He’s hoping to alleviate that late season rush having just finished as runner-up at the Ram California Circuit Finals while finishing second in all three go-rounds.

The amazing thing about qualifying for his 15th WNFR, which ties for the 3rd most qualifications in WNFR history, is that Will Lowe went to the fewest rodeos by far, in fact 25% less than the next most. He won nearly 70 % of his yearly earnings in the final three months of the season jumping 9 spots in the Ram World Standings. That was due in part to sharing the final round win with 88 points to win the championship. He finished the year with a tremendous effort winning New Braunfels, TX, finishing second at three others, and third at one. The three time world champion and two time WNFR winner has placed 85 times in Las Vegas to win $899,612.

This nine time Canadian champion, two in steer wrestling, seems to always have the ability to turn it on when he decides he wants to compete. He just missed a world championship in 2010 and this may very well be his year. He had the most runs under 4.5 seconds, placed in the most go-rounds, and placed at the second most rodeos to stay among the top four since the first of June. Winning the Wrangler Tour Finale propelled him to the number one spot in the final Ram World Standings. Among the WNFR contestants the former reserve champion shares the most go-round wins and has placed 22 times to earn $221,000.

The reigning world champion is in a better position than he was a year ago when he came from the number three position, won second in the aggregate, after placing in five go-rounds, the world title and the most money at the WNFR. Among this year’s contestants he averages the second highest earnings, $96,400. From June 1 he won more money than anyone, $87,500 while winning more aggregate titles and having the most times to finish first or second in the aggregate. He had held the money lead from the Fourth of July until mid-September.

Hometown: Louisville, MS Key Win: Fort Worth, TX WNFR Qualifications: 3

Scott Guenthner

After placing in the first go-round at the 2017 WNFR a little tough luck kept Scott from placing in three or four go-rounds, however he had the perseverance to stay strong and close out the last two rounds in 3.3 and 3.6 to win first and second and finish fifth in the aggregate. His luck could be better this year after his showing of placing at the second highest percentage of rodeo in spite of the fact that he went to the fourth fewest. He shared the fourth highest number of runs under 4.5, tied for the most times to win first or second in a go-round at multiple go-round events and placed at the third highest number of rodeos.

Here is another man on a mission with some unfinished business to take care of. The world leader going into the 2017 WNFR took the aggregate lead after the sixth go-round and held it until he missed the nose on his ninth steer. Miraculously he was able to stay in the aggregate and finish sixth in the average, unfortunately it was one spot too far down. Since the first of April he jumped 23 spots by placing at the highest percentage of rodeos, the highest number of events, and sharing the most times to win first or second in a go-round at multiple go-round rodeos. At the WNFR he has won $321,646 and has placed 24 times, more than any other 2018 WNFR contestant.

One of seven contestants that finished the 2017 season 20th or higher, it is going to be interesting watching this 6’2, 250 pound athlete mix it up with the WNFR veterans. Based on his season’s performance he is certainly not going to intimidated by the bright lights of Las Vegas. He had the fourth best ratio of placing at 41% of the rodeos he attended while sharing the second highest total of one go-round rodeo wins. Since the first of July he won more money than any other contestant to jump 17 spots in the Ram World Standings. All helped by a two week run where he won Estes Park and Colorado Springs, CO followed up by Salinas, CA.

Depending on how you look at it, the number 7 is a lucky number in Las Vegas. Ironically, for this two time world champion he is coming into the 2018 WNFR in the same number seven position that he was in when he won his first world title in 2013. He has had a good success rate at the WNFR, placing in the aggregate every year and has the second best ratio of placing 63% of the time out of only three WNFR Qualifications. After making his first WNFR appearance in 2016 this talented Cajun just missed an encore in 2017. He wasn’t about to let that happen. He was third best on the year with 30 runs under 4.5 seconds and the best in that they were 81% of his winning runs. The winner of the Ram Southeastern Circuit Finals, totaling a mere 10.8 on three runs to win by nearly two seconds also had an early major win at San Angelo, TX and placed in two go-rounds and the average at the Ram National Circuit Finals as well as earning a majority of his money at the Wrangler Pro Tour events to help him stay solid in the top ten the entire year. He’s already started the new year by winning Bonifay, FL at 3.7.

Tyler Waguespack $$$ Although he may be entering the WNFR lower than in his three previous appearances, don’t let that fool you, it may only make him that much better of a bargain. He did go to the third fewest rodeos this year. However, it’s in Las Vegas where the cream really rises to the top. Of this year’s WNFR contestants he has the most WNFR earnings of $391,000 and has placed the most, 63% of the time he runs one. In 2016 not only did he set a new earnings record in winning the world title, but left Las Vegas with the Ram Top Gun Award as the highest money winner.

Blake Mindemann

Other than finishing as the reserve champion at the Ram Prairie Circuit Finals, the winter rodeos didn’t treat Blake Mindemann all that well, in fact he was sitting lower than the top 40 finish he’d had in 2017. Blake got an invite to the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo where he finished third for the championship and had the biggest rodeo of the year. With that he continued to rodeo and made the biggest move of any contestant following the first of April. He shared the second most times to place in go-rounds at multiple go-round rodeos as well as place in the aggregate.

Hometown: Blanchard, OK Key Win: Sheridan,WY WNFR Qualifications: 1

Riley Duvall

With the family name that is constantly brought up by seasoned rodeo fans whenever they talk steer wrestling, Riley Duvall is carrying on the family tradition just fine. He also missed an encore appearance a year ago and will be looking to build on his success from the final half of his 2016 WNFR when he notched a pair of 3.6 second runs to win two go-rounds as well as splitting third in the tenth round. Solid among the top ten the majority of the year he found himself on the outside after Labor Day, but two solid runs at the Wrangler Pro Tour Finale nailed down the aggregate title and a five position jump. For the year he shared the fourth most times to record sub 4.5 second runs.

Hometown: Checotah, OK Key Win: All American F Waco, TX WNFR Qualifications: 2

Blake Knowles

In qualifying for his fourth WNFR Blake Knowles was the top man in placing in not only the aggregate, but also the go-rounds at multiple go-round events, placing 32 times in the go-rounds and 14 times in the average. He also had the second most aggregate wins and was second overall placing in 47 go-rounds total. He had a good start to the season, placing at Fort Worth and San Antonio, TX and winning Tucson, AZ but found himself outside the top 15. However as summer heated up so did he, jumping 30 spots and winning nearly 80% of his money since the end of May. He’ll be looking to pick up where he left off in 2015 when he was 4.0 to place in the 10th go-round.

Since he joined the PRCA this former basketball player seldom left the comfortable confines of his home state of Montana. However, winning the Ram Montana Circuit Finals Rodeo by more than two seconds over the field, had him in a position to qualify for San Antonio where he won a go-round in 3.7 seconds. As a tune up for the Ram National Circuit Finals he entered the Wrangler Pro Tour events in Logandale, NV and Red Bluff, CA where he recorded three runs under four seconds to finish third and second respectively. The tune up worked as he finished as the reserve champion at the RNCFR and helped him jump 26 spots in the Ram World Standings while going to the fewest rodeos.

In his first WNFR qualification Kyle Irwin finished as the reserve world champion after starting in the 10th position while winning the second most money. Last year, coming from 11th back he ended third in the world as well as aggregate and won the fourth most money. All told among the current contestants he is the fourth highest money earner at $237,000 and is fourth best placing 50% of the time he ran one. The 2014 Ram National Circuit Finals Champion is a good bet to at least maintain that pace as his consistency from the 2017 WNFR carried over to this season

In jumping 29 spots, the biggest jump on anyone, in the Ram World Standings over the final four months of the season, it wasn’t until he won the first go-round at the Pendleton RoundUp that he cracked the top 15. However, he wasn’t safe and it took six winning pressure packed runs over the last two weeks of the year to maintain that WNFR spot. Those runs put him in position to add to his more than $200,000 current WNFR earnings, including three times having placed in the aggregate.

Roping four years together has produced a consistency that has had them strongly challenging for a world championship for three of them, and for the way they have roped this year the third one may be the charm. Over the past two years they have won nearly $200,000. Placing in half of the go-rounds and finishing as reserve WNFR champions. During the regular season they tallied the second highest number of runs under five seconds which amounted to 76% of their placing. If they get tapped off like they did in 2017 it may very well be a game changer for this team.

Many people feel that it is much better to be the hunter rather than the hunted. For Kaleb Driggers, a three time reserve world champion, he will definitely have his sights set on the prize and he has the credentials to back it up. Over his WNFR career he has placed in 52% of the go-rounds and counting the aggregate has placed 60% of the time he runs one which shares the top spot among this year’s contestants. He has WNFR earnings of $467,144 of which nearly half has been earned over the last two years. He will carry the momentum into the finals of having best percentage of placing at 65% of the rodeos he went to and has his guns loaded.

Look for things to be both different and better for this 2016 Resistol Rookie of the Year. A no time in the first go-round can change things at the WNFR. He was still able to bounce back to place in five go-rounds, winning two, and the aggregate for $104,769. If the WNFR goes like the season did it will definitely be better. He turned steers to produce the most runs under five seconds which resulted in 80% of their placings, also the best on the year. They shared the most victories at one go-round rodeos, the most times to win first or second in all go-rounds they competed in.

When talking ProRodeo team roping there is always a good chance that this three time world champion’s name is going to come up. Among this year’s heading contestants he has placed in the most go-rounds, 65, and another nine times in the aggregate, including two championships, to win $820,845. The regular season this year was nothing short of the kind of runs we have watched him make at the WNFR. He jumped 36 spots in the Ram World Standings the last half of the season recording the second most times to finish first or second in a go-round.

The 2015 Resistol Rookie of the Year was somewhat snake bit during the 2017 WNFR, fortunately it did not carry into the 2018 season which was a huge improvement over the previous two. He was on the heading side for the third highest number of rodeos to place in, even more impressive when you consider that over half of the field went to more rodeos than he did. He also had the second highest number of go-round placings at multiple go-round rodeos, the fourth highest number of times to place in the aggregate and shared the most wins. Hopefully that success will continue in Las Vegas.

It was an interesting story line for this first time WNFR qualifier who was a contender for a trip in 2015. As a man that concentrates on training horses he had to scramble for partners during much of the season. Consequently he competed at the second fewest rodeos, 15% less than most. But to give you an idea of how much a horseman is and how well he handles cattle, he roped and placed with eight different partners and garnered first place finishes with five. Another positive vote for him is that he recorded the third highest number of times to finish first or second in a go-round.

The defending and three time WNFR champion might very well become a three time world champion the way he marched up the Ram World Standings the end of the year, particularly the way he did it with the coolness of a safecracker. Not in the top 50 until the end of May or the top 15 until the end of June he still wasn’t safe in mid-September when he lead going into the finals at Pendleton, OR. He blew out the barrier to not only win the title but also the finals. At the WNFR he is second placing in 49 go-rounds and seven times placing in the aggregate to win $687,357.

Derrick Begay will make his eighth trip to the WNFR with his fourth partner, no problem, Petska is a world champion just like the last time Begay competed in Las Vegas when he won $133,596, his highest total. Begay wasn’t planning on rodeoing that hard, in fact had only placed at two rodeos prior to the end of June. Then came the phone call that got him back on the road, and when they hit the ground they hit it running. Even so, he went to the fewest rodeos, 20% less than the majority and never hit the top 50 until the end of July. In the final two months he won the most of any header and jumped 23 spots in the Ram World Standings. Watch for that running to continue.

At the end of May this 2015 World Champion and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo winner was barely in the top 15. Then he hooked up with the young guy, his fifth partner of the year, and they as well went on a tear. Aaron moved 39 spots in the Ram World Standings in the last four months. If history is an indicator this should be a team to watch. Aaron has the highest percentage of qualified runs at the WNFR, as well as winning a go-round 25% of the time he competes, and the third highest percentage of overall placing at 53% of his runs. He also has the highest average earnings of $114,707.

Over the last three years no header has won more money than Luke Brown, $381,365, and he also has the second highest career earnings of $809,259. You don’t get those kind of figures without consistency, easily proved by three WNFR championships, a reserve championship, and three other times placing in the aggregate. Granted, the aggregate placing was not that high the past two years, which just shows how good he is to be able to run at the gorounds, winning five and placing in six others. That is why he has been able to place 54% of the time he has competed in Las Vegas. And I don’t see him holding anything back this year.

Much like a year ago Riley Minor had a relatively slow start on the 2018 season, he was 35th in the Ram World Standings. As history repeated itself during the regular season, he can only hope that it does at the WNFR as well, as he ended 2017 with the highest total earnings of his career. Over the last two years he has won more money than any other header, $261,788, placing in 11 go-rounds and ending third in the aggregate both years. For his career in Las Vegas he has earned $497,336, the fifth highest total and has been fifth best at winning first or second in a go-round. Sit back and watch history repeat itself.

The 2012 Resistol Rookie the Year placed at his first four rodeos with four different partners in his attempt to get back to his second WNFR. Following the fourth of July he was 22nd in the Ram World Standings and had barely earned 40% of his year-end total. That is when it started to come together as he had hooked up with Tyler McKnight to finish out the year, and obviously it turned out well. Apparent by the facts that he shared the top spot for wins at one head rodeos, was third best at placing in 53% of the rodeos he attended, and had the 3rd highest percentage of placing with runs under five seconds.

The reigning world champion didn’t get off to the best start for the 2018 season, he had only placed at two rodeos prior to mid-June. That all changed when he teamed up with Clint Summers and they promptly won a go-round in Santa Fe, NM in 3.8 seconds. Following that he made the largest move of anyone gaining 32 positions over the last three months as he won nearly 80% of his yearly total. With that kind of success rate there should be no reason why he wouldn’t add on to his second best WNFR earnings total of $332,782 over the last three years and second best career earnings of $525,642.

Hometown: Round Rock, AZ Key Win: Joseph, OR WNFR Qualifications: 8

After finishing 20th and 31st respectively over the last two years what a birthday present it was on October 2 to know that he would be competing at his first WNFR. Although his birthday present may have arrived a little sooner than that as over the last two months of the season he had to make up 21 spots and was still only 26th in the Ram World Standings after Labor Day. The Wrangler Tour Finale started him on his way up the ladder when he finished third, then it was a reserve championship at the Pendleton, OR Round-Up. But it took a reserve championship at Kansas City, MO on the last weekend to seal the deal. Quite possibly he’ll get an early Christmas present in Las Vegas.

When Rhen Richard won the Resistol Rookie of the Year award it was for heeling to give you an idea of just how talented this man is, plus the fact that he will also be competing at the WNFR in the tie down roping. As usual to arrive at the WNFR it is not an easy journey, Rhen was 23 spots out as the summer began with less than 20% of his year end total. He shared the highest number of times to place at one go-round events finishing first or second at one third of them. A pair of 4.6 second runs at Bremerton, WA and Kennewick, WA’s Wrangler Pro Tour event the last week of August moved him into the top 15. By the way, he won the All Around title at 40% of the rodeos he placed at in the team roping.

Since making the move to ProRodeo from Brazil there is little doubt that he has established himself as one of the premier heelers. For the third consecutive year he enters the WNFR in the number one position where he has the highest percentage of placing in both go-rounds and the aggregate. That translates to the highest average earnings of $107,885 and for the last three years $118,613. No different than what he did during this year’s regular season, placing at the most rodeos, the highest percentage of rodeos, and the total number of times to place in both go-rounds and the aggregate of rodeos, 82.

He lead the Ram World Standings on two occasions and will certainly have something to say about the outcome of the world and WNFR title, one that he has previously claimed. Among the heelers at the WNFR he has the most go-round wins, has placed in the go-rounds and aggregate on nearly 50% of his competition runs, and has won $877,000 and more importantly in his last two appearance has averaged $107,000.

To qualify for his 10th WNFR he had to jump 42 spots after he cracked the top 50 the end of April with only $8900 in earnings. To do so he recorded the third highest number of runs under five seconds which were 63% of his placings and he tied for second most times to win one go-round rodeos. A go-round win at both Fort Worth and San Antonio, TX then the championship at the Wrangler Pro Tour rodeo in Red Bluff, CA where they place in all four go-rounds to win the aggregate by 2.5 seconds followed by the title in Guymon, OK had them among the top five in the Ram World Standings. They never deviated but a place or two either way the remainder of the year to earn his third straight WNFR qualification. He placed in the second highest number of gorounds at multiple go-round rodeos and tied for the third most times to place in the aggregate.

He has placed an even 50% of all go-rounds competed in and in six of the seven years was among the aggregate leaders, including a reserve championship. He made it handily with the help of seven heelers, three of which will be competing at this year’s WNFR, and he placed with all of them. Only once after the first of April did he drop to 16, which was right after he had won a go-round at the Wrangler Pro Tour in Red Bluff, CA, but promptly turned it around the next week end, winning the Wrangler Pro Tour in Corpus Christi, TX to jump back to 11th. After winning a WNFR and world title in 2015 which included the second highest WNFR earnings, over half of what he’s won in the last three years, Jacobs Crawley seemed to run into more than his share of tough luck, whether it be riding or drawing. This will mark the third year going to the WNFR in the lead, and it may well fit the old adage of the third time being the charm. He ended the year first in placing at 70% of his rodeos and had the most rides scored over 80 points which amounted to the highest percentage of horses attempted. He had the second highest earnings for August & September and has started the 2019 season by winning Hempstead and Rosenberg, TX.

And that wasn’t just since April, he won the most money in July, August, and September. He won first or second in all go-rounds more than anyone else, 80% more than the average. Although he has only been to the WNFR the past two years he has the second highest earning, $326,730 of the last three years with the highest average earnings.

He placed at the second highest percentage of rodeos while having the highest riding percentage, placing in the most go-rounds, second most times to place in the aggregate and most total times to place. Those two figures alone are impressive enough for the man that showed no WNFR jitters a year ago when he won $176,621 placing on a WNFR best 70%. However, after holding steadily among the top 15 at the end of May he found himself 18th without one win to his credit. He hadn’t been to many rodeos and he figured he’d better turn it up a few notches, and did he ever. In fact during the month of August he won more money than any bronc rider. For the year he actually climbed on the second fewest head of horses in the lower 48 states, 70% of the average, but he had the fourth best percentage of rides over 80 points and second best of rides attempted. In any professional sport there is really only one time when a person or team needs to be at the top, when the season is over. 2013 World champion and WNFR record setter Shane Hanchey knows that well, having entered the 2013 WNFR tenth. Could it be an omen that he took over the lead in the Ram World Standings the last week-end of the season? He won the most money of anyone in the final four months by placing at over 50% of his rodeos with the most runs under 8.5 seconds and had the most victories, one third more than the next closest. He has WNFR earnings of $566,596, including the most money won in 2013 and few would bet against him increasing that total substantially.

The reigning All-Around World Champion has to be considered in a class of those tie-down ropers that a person has to go through in order to win a world title. As he held the lead for the majority of the year end, he did it by going to the second fewest rodeos yet recording the second highest number of runs under 8.5 seconds. He placed in the most go-rounds at multiple go-round rodeos and shared the highest number of times to place in the aggregate. At the WNFR he has placed in 47 go-rounds, 52% of the cattle he has ran, which is the highest among this year’s contestants. The three time world champion, who has never finished lower than fourth, has WNFR earnings of $723,475.

Certainly no one is forgetting that there are three other world champions and nine more very talented tie-down ropers in the mix, but few could argue that the top three in the Ram World Standings could possibly create some of the most exciting watching for ten WNFR nights. The 2016 World Champion held the top spot for all but one week from the end of April to the end of August, in spite of a cool spell through July. Fortunately he got back on pace for the last two months, including winning the Wrangler Pro Tour Finale. For the year he shared the third highest number runs under 8.5 seconds and the most aggregate wins as well as placing in the second most go-rounds.

Jake Pratt

Four years ago Jake Pratt went right down to the wire before coming up just short of a WNFR qualification. His competitive edge and love of the sport kept him a threat over the next three years although suffering some setbacks that might have caused lesser men to hang it up. For the fans of the northwest that have cheered him on they know that this first WNFR qualification was not any type of fluke whatsoever, only indicative of his talent and perseverance. He placed at the second most events with the third highest winning percentage while sharing the top spot to win first or second in all go-rounds and the top spot of placing in the aggregate. Expect more of the same in Las Vegas.

Ryle Smith

Whether it be the tie-down roping or the steer wrestling, Ryle Smith doesn’t waste many opportunities, evidenced by the fact that he went to less rodeos than any qualifier this year, more than 25% less than the average. Still he placed in the third most go-rounds at multiple go-round rodeos, shared the third highest number of go-round wins, and shared the most aggregate wins. When looking at his past appearance at the WNFR, don’t just look at the end result, it was tough luck. Winning the Ram California Circuit Finals has him on top of the Ram World Standings for 2019.

The 23 time world champion never ceases to amaze or pull off the near impossible. This year in qualifying for his 18th WNFR qualification in the tie-down roping he climbed 23 spots in the Ram World Standings over the last four months of the season with the third highest earnings. He shared the fifth highest total of runs under 8.5 seconds with 54% of them being money winning runs. During his WNFR career he has more than one million in WNFR tiedown earnings having placed more times than most WNFR qualifiers have ever nodded their head. Over the past three years he has the third best average earnings among this year’s contestants.

Cooper Martin

After winning Belton, TX in early February Cooper Martin didn’t win a dime for two months, then over the last half of the season he advanced 31 spots in the Ram World Standings while having the fourth highest total earnings over that period. During that run he tied for the third highest number of rodeos to place in as well as sharing the third most wins, and winning the third most one head rodeos. One difference from a year ago is that he has matured, aside from now being old enough to linger at the South Point after the go-round winning buckle presentations. And it won’t surprise too many people if he makes more than one trip this year.

8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15

In 2015 Caleb climbed five spots at the WNFR by winning an event best $144,904 to claim both the World and WNFR titles. Including 2015 he has the second highest average earnings of WNFR tiedown ropers of $106,371 over the last three years. That compares to his winning percentage for this year, having competed at the third fewest rodeos he tied for the third most go-round wins at multiple go-round rodeos and shared the honor of most aggregate titles. He also tied for the third most victories overall. At the WNFR he is tied for the second best ratio of placing 55% of the time he competes.

Hometown: Bellville, TX Key Win: Jackson, MS WNFR Qualifications: 5

Cory Solomon

Among this year’s contestants Cory Solomon is the fifth highest money winner, not bad at all, but consider that nearly 60% of both his earnings and placings have occurred in the past two years. Last year he jumped eight spots in the final world standings after finishing third in the aggregate. That helped move him to the second best percentage of WNFR qualifying runs among this year’s finalists. On the season he won the mot go-rounds at multiple go-round rodeos while sharing the third highest total of runs under 8.5 seconds with those runs accounting for the highest percentage of runs that placed, 62%.

Marty Yates $$

It shouldn’t come as any surprise to WNFR fans that this man had the second best ratio of runs under 8.5 seconds that amounted to placing in go-rounds during the season, 59%, or that he tied for third highest number of wins. Or that if he comes remotely close to his WNFR best three year average earnings of $114,621 he will become the next tie-down roping millionaire. In his four years in Las Vegas he has won $401,945 while placing on 50% of his runs and is tied for the third most go-round wins, 40% of his earnings. At the WNFR he has improved 15 spots over the last two years, 11 of which came two years ago. He doesn’t have that far to go this year.

Hometown: Stephenville, TX Key Win: Fort Worth, TX WNFR Qualifications: 5

Reese Riemer

At the halfway point of the season this two time WNFR qualifier was still $2,500 away from the top 50 in the Ram World Standings and by the end of April he’d only won about 10% of his season’s earnings. From that point on he earned the fourth most money, starting at the Guymon, OK Pioneer Days Rodeo where he placed in all three go-rounds for a three head aggregate win of more than three seconds ahead of the field. He was still 25 spots back by the end of June, wins at Colorado Springs, CO and the Wrangler Pro Tour in Spanish Fork, UT gave him his first glimpse of a top 15 position. Hopefully his run will continue in Las Vegas where his record is not indicative of how well he has roped.

Hometown: Stinnett, TX Key Win: Colorado Springs, CO WNFR Qualifications: 3

Matt Shiozawa

Over the last three years at the WNFR Matt Shiozawa is the third highest money earner among this year’s contestants. However, over the last four years he is the second highest and from 2014-2016 won the most money. That should give you an indication of his success in Las Vegas where he has placed in the third most go-rounds, a 44% ratio of those competed in, won the second highest number of gorounds and finished among the top three in the aggregate on four occasions. It takes a special individual to win four Ram National Circuit Finals titles. During the 2018 season he shared the most wins at one go-round rodeos and had the second most wins overall.

For the past seven years this former National High School All Around and Tie-down champion has been among the top 15 All Around hands in Pro Rodeo. It was just a matter of time before he would be in Las Vegas and now he is the only man to qualify in two events. After entering the Ram World Standings top 15 in midApril he fell out the end of June before wins at both Vernal, UT and Edmonton, AB brought him back to stay.Through his 2018 campaign he shared the third highest total of placing at one go-round rodeos, placing at total rodeos, and the most times to place in a rodeos aggregate payoff. It has been said that good things come to those who wait, he may be double rewarded.

Keep in mind that this former College and Resistol Rookie of the Year went to the fifth fewest rodeos outside of placing at Dalhart, TX the first week of August went to few rodeos and didn’t place until Albuquerque, NM falling out of the top 15 of the Ram World Standings. He then placed at four rodeos over the last two weekends including an important reserve championship at Kansas City, MO to qualify for his third WNFR. In his second appearance at the WNFR he nearly tripled his earnings from his first trip after winning a go-round, placing in four more as well as the aggregate. After his hot finish to close out the year that run may continue in his third appearance.

Ryan Jarrett

Not only did this World All-Around Champion find himself further out of the top 15 World Standings than any other tie-down roper at the end of August, but after climbing back in, with a win at the final Wrangler Tour in Ellensburg, WA, he was outside again with one week to go. Although he was one of the year’s leaders in placing at multiple go-round rodeos he had not had a victory at a one go-round event, but that is exactly what he got at Kingman, AZ on the final day of the regular season, and as they say, “the rest is history”. He will now have the chance to add to his WNFR earnings of $583,653 and quite possibly another WNFR championship.

What do you do after setting a WNFR record for most money earned in Las Vegas? Go out and blow the field away with the second highest total ever earned during the regular season. Winning four go-rounds, including an arena setting run of 13.11 and placing in four more netted a sixth place aggregate finish and a jump from seventh to second in the final world standings. During the 2018 season she went to ten rodeos less than the average, yet still had the most go-round wins and second most times to win first or second in a go-round. Just imagine what the champion of the Calgary Stampede could have done last year without barrels down in two go-rounds, you just might get to see.

Last year she went into the WNFR sitting third after attending the third fewest rodeos. She then proceeded to place in seven go-rounds and set a record for the fastest time on 10 runs. So what does the reigning world and record setting WNFR champion do for an encore, go to the fewest rodeos, 50% of the average attended by this year’s contestants and place at 70% of them. She shared the top spot for aggregate wins and won first or second more than anyone. She also had the third highest total of go-round and overall wins. The WNFR is a breath taking event, and these top two ladies may have the majority of fans holding their breath for every run.

In 11 appearances at the WNFR, only twice has this two time world and WNFR champion qualified with more money won than she has won this year. And in both of those years she won the world championship. She certainly isn’t far off of those totals now after placing in the most go-rounds at multiple go-round rodeos, having the highest number of times to win first or second in a go-round, and tying for the most aggregate wins. Besides her two WNFR titles, the rest of her track record is good also. She has won $621,966 in Las Vegas while placing in 51 go-rounds, 30% of which were for first or second. She’s been a serious player in Las Vegas and this year shouldn’t be any different.

A lady that will long be remembered as one of the most talented and gracious to compete under the banner of the WPRA has now tied for the third most times to qualify for the WNFR. And she did it by going to the second fewest rodeos while placing at 72%, higher than anyone else. She made the most runs of the year under 15 seconds and shared the third highest number of winning first or second in a go-round. She has already crossed the one million dollar mark in WNFR earnings and has the best three year total of $382,365. Twice she has been the WNFR champion and held the record that Nellie Miller broke last year, most fans won’t be surprised to see her get it back.

During the second half of the regular season Stevi Hillman won the third highest amount of money in Pro Rodeo to jump 21 spots in the Ram World Standings, thanks in part to winning such major rodeos as the Wrangler Tour in Ponoka, AB and Colorado Springs, CO. She had the sixth highest total of winning first or second in all go-rounds while winning half of the go-rounds she placed in at multiple go-round rodeos, which shared fourth most on the year. With that kind of year end run she should be due to have her best WNFR and she is overdue for what she is capable of.

Taci Bettis

The 2017 WPRA Rookie of the Year placed in half of the go-rounds at her inaugural WNFR, a great recovery considering she recorded a no time in the first round. Easier said than done, but any kind of 14 second run would have won fourth in the aggregate. In qualifying two spots better than she did a year ago she competed at the fourth fewest rodeos winning first at more than 30% of the go-rounds she placed in at multiple go-round rodeos. Unfortunately for the Ram National Circuit Finals winner it could have been a higher qualifying spot, but she didn’t see much action after placing at Calgary. She did close out the year placing at Omaha, NE and should be ready to improve upon 2017.

Finishing second and third respectively at Denver, CO and Fort Worth, TX afforded this first time qualifier some breathing room, then winning Guymon, OK in early May got her to nearly half of her season total. She competed at less than less than the average contestant did while sharing second best in placing at 70% of her rodeos. She also shared the highest number of wins in the aggregate as well as having recording the most reserve championships.

After a seven year layoff Tammy Fischer has qualified for her seventh WNFR. Few people have the mettle to put in that kind of work to make something like that happen. That would put her in the class of such people as world champions Marlene Eddleman and Martha Josey. It took dedication and desire to pull it off, needing to climb 33 spots and win almost 90% of her earnings over the last five months of the season. In fact, she had the fourth highest earnings during that time frame and in the final month she had the third highest earnings to advance four spots. The next week it was a win at North Platte, NE, but that would be her last for nearly another month and she dropped to 21st. With five weeks to go in the 2018 season Tracy Nowlin was the only WNFR qualifier on the outside, 17th to be exact. In those last five weeks she was nothing short of phenomenal with half of her total wins and placing at nearly 25% of her total rodeos placed to have the second highest earnings for September. She won Walla Walla, WA and the Wrangler Pro Tour in Ellensburg, WA over Labor Day, the next week-end Spokane, WA and Salt Lake City, UT then Omaha, NE the last week-end plus placing at five others. Then over the last two week-ends she placed at seven rodeos, including winning San Bernadino, CA to have the second highest earnings over the last two months of the season to jump four spots. She may not have had as many wins as the majority, but she won second more than anyone else. Although she goes to Las Vegas in the final qualifying spot, she was ninth in the world standings when she placed at her final rodeo. With her horses having possibly more time off than most and competing in the Canadian Finals prior to Las Vegas may very well make her one of the dark horse favorites in Las Vegas.

It’s always a good idea to cover anything you build with something to protect your assets. Not only has the four time world champion protected them, he has added to them at the WNFR. His WNFR earnings are $659,639 while placing 73% of the time he competes. After placing 89 times during the regular season with both the most rides over both 80 and 90 points he enters his fifth WNFR with a four go-round lead. In 2017 he entered legendary status, joining Dick Griffith and Don Gay, also the winners of four championships in a row and trails Jim Shoulders who won six consecutive.

Parker Breding

Since winning his third Ram National Circuit Finals title Parker Breding has been on one of Pro Rodeo’s best hot streaks. He qualified for his third WNFR with more than $100,000 more than he did for his first one five years ago. He did it with the most qualified rides, placing at the most rodeos, and the most one go-round rodeos. He also had the second highest amount of rides over 80 points, scoring more than 80 points 45% of his entire attempts throughout the year. He was irritated after finishing 46th in the final 2017 Ram World Standings and really turned it around. He was also irritated at his last WNFR when after winning the first go-round he only placed twice more. There could be a pattern coming.

Hometown: Edgar, MT Key Win: Ram NCFR Kissemmee, FL WNFR Qualifications: 3

Dustin Boquet

From winning a go-round at the Ram Southeastern Circuit Finals at 87.5 points finishing as the reserve champion through the last weekend of the season when he was the reserve champion at Stephenville, TX, also scoring 87.5 points there was very little deviation in Dustin Boquet’s rides, scoring, or Ram World Standings. He placed the fifth highest number of times during the year, while placing at the fifth most rodeos, and the third highest amount of times to place at multiple go-round events. With consistency being a mark of champions we will watch for the same consistency in Las Vegas.

Hometown: Bourg, LA Key Win: Nampa, ID- Wr Tour WNFR Qualifications: 1

Roscoe Jarboe

The 2016 Resistol Rookie of the Year enters his third WNFR with his highest season total, but it wasn’t an easy road to travel. With two months left in the season he was 24 spots behind his current position in the Ram World Standings. Although he went to the fifth fewest rodeos, 80% of the average, he won the third most money over the last two months and had the second highest total during the month of September when he made the biggest jump of anyone, going from 14th to fourth. One of the reasons was that 85% of his qualified rides were over 80 points. He’s been a WNFR go-round winner at 88.5 points and hopefully those kind of numbers will continue.

Hometown: New Plymouth, ID Key Win: San Juan Capistrano, CA WNFR Qualifications: 3

Chase Dougherty

After winning the Ram Columbia River Circuit Finals he claimed the title at the National Western in Denver, CO then followed that up with an 88 point go-round winning ride in Fort Worth, TX for a very hot start for his 2018 season. By the time the spring run was heating up he had risen from his 19th spot of 2017 into the top 15. From that point on he steadily climbed nine spots to his present position with the fourth best riding percentage, fourth highest number of rides over 80 points and the second most aggregate wins. He was a pole vaulter in high school and looks to make one of his biggest vaults of the year at the WNFR. And he has already scored the first 90 point ride of 2019 in San Francisco, CA.

Jeff Askey

Hometown: Canby, OR Key Win: Denver, CO WNFR Qualifications: 1

This former College National champion made his first WNFR appearance in 2016 finishing the season 11th. His 2017 season didn’t match up to his expectations as he fell to 36th. He was making good rides to start 2018, 88.5 points to win a go-round at Fort Worth, 87 for a win at San Antonio and 84 to win the title in Perry, GA but he hadn’t gotten back to 2016 form. Then as soon as the temperatures turned up so did his winning. From the end of May he rose 14 spots in the Ram World Standings and won the fourth most money having the fourth highest total of winning first or second in a go-round. Fortunately, it’s usually warm in the Thomas and Mack.

Boudreaux Campbell

In qualifying for his second WNFR this 2017 Resistol Rookie of the Year cut his qualifying position in half from a year ago when it was 14th. He was in that 14th position when the second half of the ProRodeo season began. Then his performance increased with the third highest number of rides over 80 points that equated to the third highest percentage of qualified rides over 80. He shared the second highest number of rodeo victories and shared the fourth highest number of winning either first or second at one go-round rodeos. One of only two men to score in the ninth go-round, 88 points, he is expecting those moments to more than double this year.

Garrett Tribble

During his second WNFR campaign he went to the fourth fewest rodeos and only one other man climbed on less bulls than he did. He stayed right in the middle of the pack all year until slipping in mid-August. By the end of August he had dropped to 15th with only a $1,400 margin over 16th. Victories at Elk City, OK, Mitchell, SD, Pasadena, TX and placing at six other events garnered him the fourth highest September earnings and jumped him seven spots back to eighth. Those three wins were part of his sharing the second highest total on the year for one go-round rodeo wins. Nice to have that kind of momentum heading back to the WNFR where he has already been a go-round winner.

Tyler Bingham

The former National High School champion just missed competing with his brother Tim at last year’s WNFR, finishing 18th in the final Ram World Standings. He cut that in half to make his first WNFR qualification. One of his year’s biggest assets was having the third most qualifying rides, an oxymoron in ProRodeo to believe you can fail to ride yet still get paid. His season did begin to unravel as he was ninth at the first of July then 15th at the end. Over the last two months of the season he placed at 40% of his rodeos while putting together the fourth highest earnings in that two month stretch.

Trey Benton III $

The 2017 reserve world champion had the type of WNFR that his many fans knew he was capable of, nearly tripling his earnings from his three previous appearances. He won four go-rounds, two with 90 point rides, placed in two more and was third in the aggregate to win $181,981. He actually left town with $211,737 counting the ground split, as he was one of only two men to ride in the ninth go-round. In qualifying for his fifth WNFR he attempted less bulls than anyone, barely 75% of the average, but 97% of his qualified rides were over 80 points and had the third highest total of winning first or second at multiple go-round events and turned in the second most 90 point rides, keeping his success rolling.

Hometown: Rock Island, TX Key Win: San Angelo, TX WNFR Qualifications: 5

Cole Melancon

Over the last half of the 2018 season while he was making his bid for his second WNFR, nobody in the sport made a bigger move than Cole Melancon. He climbed 24 spots in the Ram World Standings while having the fourth highest earnings. He tallied the second best total of the year in winning first or second at one go-round rodeos and was the third highest for winning first or second in all go-rounds. In his first WNFR appearance he tallied the fifth highest earnings as he placed on half of his attempted rides, including winning a go-round, second in another and placing in the aggregate.

Hometown: Liberty, TX Key Win: Bremerton, WA-Xtreme WNFR Qualifications: 2

Koby Radley

Joe Frost

After finishing inside the top 30 in his first full year of ProRodeo Koby Radly was all in to make his first WNFR qualification. Nothing short of enthusiasm and desire he won four of the first eight events he placed at and won a go-round at one of those. He marked the second highest score of the year among finalists to win Mandan, ND, 91.5, one of his total that shared the second most one go-round wins. When he did slip out of the top 15 in late August he put together his best run, winning 20% of his total from there out to jump five spots in the final month. With his attitude it’s likely that desire will carry him through his first WNFR.

2017 Earnings: $96,163 Wins: 6 PFR Fantasy Value: $30,000

This former Linderman Award winner had his best WNFR performance in 2017. It was the second time that he finished as reserve champion and won his highest total to date. Among 2018 WNFR contestants he has the second highest earnings, $469,262 averaging $117,315 per year while placing 60% of the time he competes. In 2018 he went to less rodeos than any other qualifier, 25% of the average contestant. But, just like his performances have been at the WNFR where 75% of his qualified rides are over 80 points, he had the third highest riding percentage and his percentage of rides over 80 were just below his WNFR average. Not much changed for the year, don’t expect it to at the WNFR.

Eli Vastbinder

Finishing 26th in the 2017 Ram World Standing, Eli Vastbinder nearly cut that in half to qualify for his first WNFR. He got the ball rolling by winning a go-round and ending as the reserve champion at the All American Finals in Waco, TX. As the second half of the season started he was solidly among the top 15, one week for each of the next three months he would slip to 16th but back the following. On the year he was among the top riding in riding percentage and placing at multiple go-round rodeos, such as scoring 89 points to win the finals at Cheyenne.

Trevor Kastner

Some people think the number three is a lucky number and in Las Vegas luck seems to be on the minds of many. If that’s the case it might be a lucky year for Trevor Kastner. He has competed in three WNFR’s, been both first and second in go-rounds three times, and one year was third in the aggregate. Then he missed the last three WNFR’s. This year he went to the third fewest rodeos, competing on the third fewest bulls and won the third highest number of go-rounds at multiple go-round events. And at one point he was actually third in the Ram World Standings. It might be a stretch, but stranger things have happened, particularly in Las Vegas.
