Everyone reading this magazine will be aware of the skills shortage in the security installation sector; it’s no secret and has been public knowledge for some years. Trades are just not trendy careers at a time when people want to be social media influencers, app developers or celebrities. Times change; as we have all become more au fait with using a keyboard, smartphones and computers the jobs market and school leavers’ ambitions have altered to an increasingly IT savvy world. Take for example all of those people who left school, went to secretarial college and then onto an office with dreams of being the PA or secretary to the top brass. Now that we can all type our own emails that go out instantly, who needs a typist for a posted letter? As technology changes, it changes what we end up doing with it and roles evolve. Along the same lines, thanks to the pandemic many more people are working from home and the skills required to do jobs that don’t require a PC are disappearing. The post-war generation were proficient in DIY, general car maintenance and house repairs, whereas today those abilities are becoming scarce. Once you start providing equipment with fitted plugs, people don’t learn to fit one. When was the last time you opened a car bonnet and saw something that looked like an engine? Technology advances change what we need to do and what we are able to do. So why wouldn’t anyone want to join the security installation sector for a career in fitting systems? As we’ve discussed previously, this sector is full of sexy stuff - we’re inundated with AI, networks, analytics, apps etc so that’s got to be attractive. Perhaps older readers might suggest that the younger generation doesn’t want a career in which they could be called out at all hours or where the company car is actually a van. Many of the apprentices at the recent Next Generation event said that they entered the sector not because of the kit they get to play with or the attraction of a company van but because they already know someone in the trade who told them about the career security, the earning potential and the satisfaction that comes from doing a good job for the customer.

Ask yourself, how did you get into this sector? Yes there will be some who moved in from alternate trades such as electricians, but word of mouth means that we all have a role to play in promoting the sector as one that is a worthy lifetime career. It’s not like journalism, as the joke goes: How did you get into journalism? Same as everyone else, I failed all my exams at school and fell in with the wrong crowd. We can all do our bit to raise awareness of the value of installers and the career path for talented engineers.

This month we continue our look at the security installer skills shortage and what the trends are for engineers and employers in a busy recruitment market

The Zitko Talent team administers the entire programme on behalf of Chubb, while supporting and mentoring trainees.

The interview that gets the facts from the top IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL This month Simon Banks talks to Paul Miller, a Chartered ManagingProfessionalSecurityandDirector of National Monitoring, Paul has been integral in the establishment of ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operation).

The programme leverages Zitko’s expertise to attract and select candidates. As part of the process, specialist psychometric testing is to identify outstanding technical and learning potential. Chubb then selects and employs trainees from the pool, with manufacturers and educators contributing around 18-weeks of technical education and certified product training; all tailored to Chubb’s needs.

ECHO is a not-for-profit organisation delivering automated alarm signalling and messaging between ARCs and blue light services, speeding up the deployment of responders to emergencies. As more emergency services become ECHO-connected the potential for the more rapid intervention of responders at protected premises is widening. When alarms are activated, the police response is estimated at 1-4 minutes quicker as a direct result of being ECHO-connected. How well has ECHO been received by the industry?

ECHO-connected ARCs will get a faster Police response for their customers. How important is the role played by the ECHO Platform Integrators?

Zitko Group Managing Director, George Zitko, commented: “Chubb has an apprentice scheme already, but they’ve recognised the value of the Talent approach. That is, developing people with transferable skills and giving them a pathway into the industry”.

Chubb launches accelerated development programme with Zitko Talent Chubb has launched an accelerated development programme designed to attract and train new industry-entrants in partnership with Zitko Talent.

For those still unaware of ECHO, can you tell us about the work you are doing?

THE BOTTOM LINE

I attended the recent British Security Awards in London. The event recognised security officers and companies working to keep people, property and places professionally protected, especially during the last 18 months. I was delighted that ECHO was announced as the winner of the National Partnership Award. Another recognition for the great work we are doing, bringing stakeholders together from across the sector, to deliver something fit-for-purpose for now and the future.

Andrew Collinson, Operations Director for Electronic Security, Chubb UK, said: “We have developed our own entry level engineers in-house before and some of our most successful people began with us this way. The accelerated development programme takes this to the next level. I believe it will be a significant source of talent; giving us people who will progress with us long-term. The programme’s been designed as a gateway for those who may or may not have previous engineering experience.

The key requirements are ‘aptitude and attitude’; qualities which recruitment partner Zitko Talent will assess with their proven selection process. By focusing on these qualities, Chubb aims to unearth hidden talent, especially among groups who are traditionally underrepresented in the industry”.

The first intake is currently being recruited ready for an autumn start. For more info see inGeorgeinterviewthewithZitkolaterthisedition.

It was important to the ECHO board that we selected Integrators who were the true experts in alarm signalling. With hundreds of thousands of connections into all UK ARCs, CSL and BT Redcare were an obvious choice and their expertise and professionalism have helped us to deliver this ground-breaking solution. Installers can be sure, that their ECHO service is in good hands!

www.psimagazine.co.uk

"We have been using CSL for years for our security communications, with the top tech support we wouldn't look anywhere else."

James Watkins – Google Review – 23 August Tweet us @CSLGroupLtd

The Police and ARC groups have welcomed this initiative and have been supportive throughout, alongside our stakeholder group, which includes all the leading industry associations. The next stage for us is to demonstrate the value that ECHO provides to Alarm Installers and their customers. Ultimately, it will be end-users who will benefit from ECHO as they will experience a vast improvement in response times. We also believe this will also be a useful tool for Installers, as a unique selling point and benefit over Apps to 999 systems which are unlikely to receive a police response.

9

Whilst we have several ECHO-connected providers, only two are ECHO Platform Integrators – CSL and BT Redcare. These Integrators play a vital role in transferring the alarms from the ARC’s AMS to the Police. Without their expertise and reliability, the ECHO system would not have been possible. The Integrators have their own dual redundancy in place with backup processes at every stage. This guarantees the transfer of alarms, quickly and securely, from point A (the protected premises) to B (the ARC) and then on to C (Emergency Services).

The accelerated development programme will last approximately 18 weeks, starting with alternating blocks of technical training, field experience and manufacturer-led certified product training. Trainees will emerge as certified fire and security engineers, equipped with the knowledge required to work within Chubb’s installation and maintenance teams.

How has the progress of the ECHO project been recognised by the sector?

This IP55 rated lock cylinder is available in either a Scandinavian Oval or European DIN 18252 format design. It is based on a kinetic energy recovery system to allow battery free power and keyNFCcommunication.(NearFieldCommunication) technology is used for key updates and allowing use as a credential on compatible wired or wireless access control system doors.

The Pulse key relies on its programmed data for access rights and therefore the physical key has no individual or lock specific pattern that can be copied. Operation Inserting the Pulse key forces a central actuator that drives a geared micro-generator to provide sufficient charge for the internal electronics. The Pulse key has a pair of contacts that engage with sprung contacts within the cylinder as the key is fully inserted. These contact pairs are commoned and ground referenced to the key shaft, this ensures the key can be inserted either way round and provides a level of connection redundancy. Once contact is made the cylinder and key communicate using a bi-directional serial data stream. Two small LEDs are mounted with one on each edge of the key and these both give three rapid flashes to confirm valid data transfer. A small electromagnetic field burst can be detected on key insertion but no data is emitted. The cylinder begins its communication with the Pulse key with a 3v negative going serial data stream that appears to be at a rate of 400kb/s.

The Pulse key can also be used as a credential on compatible wired or wireless access control doors.

The central electronic assembly of the cylinder has a diameter of 13.8 mm and slides into the 14 mm aperture which has a slotted top section for alignment. An internal circlip hold the assembly firmly in place. Any attempts at forcing would likely shear the internal structure without releasing the mechanism.

Conclusion An impressive secure and flexible access control lock cylinder that is battery free and receives updates and transfers data from keys

The cylinder memory supports up to 70 authorised groups, a 100 key blacklist and a 500 event audit trail. Testing to beyond 200,000 opening cycles has been undertaken exceeding the requirements of SFF3522.

Performance Very smooth key entry and positive kinetic energy transfer. If the key’s code is valid, the cylinder rotates clockwise and once the door is released an anti-clockwise part rotation allows the key to be released.

“We recently increased the network bandwidth by putting more fibre into the network to support additional communications lines, such as for streaming games and interviews out over LUFCTV,” says Mark Broadley. “We replaced the network cores with even higher capacity connections, upgraded to the latest AlliedWare Plus operating system, and put a new management layer in place. With a single pane of glass management system over the entire network, we are able to view everything in much more detail.”

“There are so many moving parts to the network in this dynamic stadium environment. We have to meet so many different objectives under one roof, and we have to know that everything works just the way we need it to, without fail. Having confidence in all that makes my job so much easier,” says Mark Broadley. With nearly 200 cameras around the stadium, the CCTV is a key part of the infrastructure, designed to protect the 40,000+ fans and workers in the stadium on game days. As a failure of the CCTV system would trigger cancelation of a match, NETprotocol installed a dedicated network layer using an Allied Telesis switch that supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) to each camera around the campus, further ensuring continuous operation of the security system.

Leeds United’s network continues to be critical as more modern systems are onboarded and more services become digitalised. The team’s promotion to the Premier League prompted many upgrades in services and networking to support match day requirements for press, traveling teams, security and more.

Leeds United FC’s Elland Road Stadium has capacity for 38,000 seated fans. From a network perspective, LUFC is challenging as it needed around the clock no fail network operations for all its internal businesses within the stadium grounds including back-office administration, call centre, hospitality and executive suites, ticketing, merchandise shop, press box, television studio and a CCTV security system that operates several hundred surveillance cameras throughout the whole stadium complex.

Leeds United Football Club (LUFC) is improving the customer experience for fans and visitors when using the turnstiles at its Elland Road Stadium in Leeds as part of an upgrade to its existing Allied Telesis resilient network core. The smooth working of the turnstiles, along with all other aspects of the club’s business, depends on reliable connectivity thanks to a network that has been in steady operation with no downtime for a decade and a half. Designed, installed, maintained, and supported by NETprotocol, a platinum-level Allied Telesis partner, the network covers the club’s Elland Road Stadium in Leeds and its training grounds 20 kilometres away in Thorp Arch,“OurWetherby.mission critical network operates every facet of our business – from back-office to security operations located around the ground,” says Mark Broadley, Head of IT and Facilities for LUFC. “We put our trust in NETprotocol’s expertise and Allied Telesis all those years ago when they assured us that the network would be highly reliable. The network has run continuously since then and that is valuable to us.”

SKILLS FOR

As many are aware, the occupational qualification structure for obtaining ECS cards was developed in 2018 and rolled out last year to the sector. This structure was to align with the future skills requirements of the FESS sector and the apprenticeship in England, with changes to the Scottish requirements currently undergoing a similar process. These changes were also brought in by a desire to professionalise the sector and meet the Construction Leadership Council’s move to ensure all CSCS Partner Schemes, such as ECS, are issued against a recognised qualification standard. For those who have been working in the industry for many years without formal qualifications, it was agreed that an assessment would be developed for a FESS Systems Operative to meet these sector requirements. The ECS FESS Operative assessments launched in July 2021, and questions are aimed at Level 2, covering aspects of installation, maintenance, and planning across each of the above pathways. Since the implementation of this, pass rates have been low, with ECS working with sector professionals to develop a bank of questions to help those seeking a card an opportunity to study in advance.

Skills for Security appreciated that access to high-quality CPD training for engineers at this level is scarce so quickly created a bank of technical CPD accredited courses for each pathway to help improve pass rates and knowledge of our engineers across the sector. Since its development, we have seen over 100+ engineers complete our one-day course to help them prepare and pass the ECS systems operative assessment. With pass rates of over 80% this is proving popular throughout the sector. With demand for the course rising, Skills for Security’s technical director has been working with the team at SfS to develop a digital online course that is fully accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Over the last few weeks, we have seen over 50 candidates complete this training via our LMS with positive feedback of over 95% of the content and quality of the course material. The course covers all aspects of the Systems Operative assessment and takes approximately 6 hours to complete. At the end of the course, all candidates will complete a mock assessment that, once passed, releases a CPD certificate for them to download. Like all SfS courses, they are priced with accessibility in mind, removing the challenges and barriers to high-priced CPD courses for engineers to complete, that is why this course has been priced at only £99 + VAT, and if you are a BSIA member or a partner of SfS you will attract an additional 20% off this fee.

Readers of PSI will be familiar with the work being done to raise the level of apprenticeships in the sector. But what about attracting expertise from outside the field of fire and security and developing existing engineers to widen and strengthen the pool?

The skills shortage across the security industry spectrum, specifically in relation to engineers, has been on the agenda for years and there are several initiatives in place to develop the profile of careers in the market.

It was announced recently that Chubb Fire and Security UK has launched an accelerated development programme, designed to attract and train new industry entrants in partnership with Zitko Talent. The programme will last approximately 18 weeks, starting with alternating blocks of technical training, field experience and manufacturer-led certified product training. Trainees will emerge as certified fire and security engineers, equipped with the knowledge required to work within Chubb’s installation and maintenance teams.

Continuing our focus on the future of the fire and security installation sector, PSI spoke to George Zitko of talent solutions provider Zitko Group to discuss the market and to discover more about a recently-announced partnership with one of the UK’s largest fire and security installers

“When I joined the industry back in 2004, we were talking about a talent shortage even then unfortunatelyand varying factors years”problemincreasingcontributedhavetothatoverthe George Zitko

Chubb joins a growing list of companies partnering with Zitko on the programme including Mayflex, Lenel S2, 360 Vision, CDVI, Suprema and Eagle Eye Networks. We caught up with George Zitko to find out more about the Talent scheme and how the requirements of engineers and employers are evolving along with the technology being installed. What trends are you seeing in the market today? If you'd have asked me about general security trends twelve months ago, the number one problem for security installers would have been recruiting talent, however that has now been superseded by supply chain concerns. The market is still very competitive and despite the news about the recession, this doesn’t appear to have had any impact on the market; installation companies are short of staff, but high on projects. Therefore, recruitment challenges for employers haven't gone away and the candidate market remains highly competitive. What has changed are the motivational factors for candidates given the economic and social issues of the last 3 years. Is it the same picture for all roles in the security and fire sector? In general, there is a massive shortage of people across the board, although there always has been. When I joined the industry back in 2004, we were talking about a talent shortage even then and unfortunately varying factors have

INTERVIEW

contributed to increasing that problem over the years. At every point in the supply chain - from manufacturing, through sales and technical, to both fire and security disciplines - there are shortages. The market is fierce and it's competitive. And now, our data shows candidates asking questions based on topics like mental health and well-being, work life balance and commuting. Salary is now a growing issue because of the strains that have been put on people by the cost of living. Are installers expecting more from prospective employers? Engineers and project managers are in significantly higher demand than they were a year ago and that naturally causes a change in dynamic. Candidates feel more confident, aware, possibly even more bullish about their situation. A range of new emotions are now all in play. Candidates are meeting employers and expecting a pitch due to the number of opportunities available to them. For an active candidate it’s usually one of four or five suitable employers as a minimum. Candidates are asking better questions around other key topics like training, personal development and progression and expecting more from their interviewers.

Does this change how employers approach recruitment? The demand for good engineers means that, while in the past employers may have been able to conduct singular recruitment campaigns, for example posting a job advert - that simply won’t work today. Recruitment and retention is a holistic process from start to finish, incorporating more elements than ever before. Employers and hiring managers need to know their company’s mission, vision and valuestheir USPs and essentially what they can offer employees to make them different from the competition. This also needs to be backed up by their employer brand with evidential content like case studies, testimonials and employer ratings on their website and social media presence. The employers that don't do that are the ones that are going to suffer.

On the other side of things, is there a problem with employers coming to you expecting the perfect candidate? That's never changed as employers have always looked for the unicorn! It doesn’t matter what industry you operate in, people can get too entrenched in looking for the perfect candidate. In our view, there's no such thing as the perfect candidate, but there is the right candidate. We work with employers to convert an unrealistic checklist of requirements into an achievable list of skills, attributes, and experience. By putting retention at the heart of the recruitment process

INTERVIEW (continued from page 23)

Most interestingly our data also shows that the interview experience has a direct correlation to the rate of hiring success.

“It doesn’t matter what industry you operate in, people can get too entrenched in looking for the perfect candidate. In our view, there's no such thing as the perfect candidate, but there is the right candidate” www.psimagazine.co.uk

Absolutely. While candidates today are asking themselves different questions from what they might have prioritised in the past, fundamentally they still want to work for a good employer and work for a business that meets their own ideals and ethos. Money is an issue now. People are worried about a recession, house prices, fuel and energy costs. Candidates who would never have put money as their first concern when considering careers, are now being forced to. This changing dynamic needs to be reflected by the employer, whilst still understanding that conditions like flexibility around work life balance, employee engagement practices, well-being and mental health, financial support and advice, equality and diversity, training and development etc remain key factors in the decision to move.

So employers need to change their attitude to recruiting?

From when I joined the industry, it’s been continually evolving. We were moving from digital to IP and the genera IT skills within the industry were short of where they needed to be. Now, amongst other things it’s cloud, virtualisation, cyber and storage and the issue remains. In those days all of the large installation organisations were running really strong apprenticeship programmes, traineeships and YTS schemes creating a continual influx of talent into the industry. Funding for security training for forces personnel also meant an invaluable pipeline of ex-military professionals joining the industry at an adult and skilled stage. Since then, funding cuts and under-use of trainee schemes, added to now by the effects of the pandemic and the increased competition in the market means the picture has just got worse and worse. I've always believed in partnerships and solutions. Zitko as a business has never been about placing the same people in the same jobs with the same companies. So about two and a half years ago, Zitko Group was large enough and had the right personnel within the business, to launch Zitko Talent, which is all about solving the industry's talent crisis and ultimately placing 20,000 people with transferable skills into fire and security careers. The industry has a terrible time marketing itself. For example, we call it an industry, not a career. That's something I want to change. And we need to get the message out to the right people. Some great steps have already been taken – for example I'm a massive advocate of apprenticeships as I believe we need to be bringing young people into the industry. It's a great way to build engagement, talent, and skills. But Zitko Talent differs from apprenticeships in that it specifically targets retrainers with life experience and transferable skills, who can become effective within businesses, ideally within three to six months. We’re already seeing Talent candidates on callout or leading projects within that timeframe. We've re-engaged with the military through the Career Transitions Partnership (CTP) and other ex-forces organisations, and we are actively working with universities, councils, groups and STEM organisations while marketing fire and security careers to professionals in other trades and industries. We then ensure our employers have the framework and structure to support those candidates over their first 12 months as an employee, whether that’s through training, mentorship, guidance or consistent communication. This has so far meant retention rates of over 90%, something we’re incredibly excitedThere’sabout.someone to thank for all this. I'll never forget one of my first ever hiring managers was the Service Manager for Kidde Fire in Luton. He identified very quickly that telecommunications engineers trained fantastically well into fire within three months. He never asked me to recruit a fire alarm engineer, he would ask me to recruit in the fibre and telco sector and identify people that were excited by fire systems and life safety. We ended up recruiting over 30 people for him in a year when other installers were struggling to find anyone. That taught me the value of transferable skills and that's what I've championed throughout my career. Alternatively, what's the key to retaining rather than recruiting? We focus on retention with all our employment partners. We're not interested in placing someone and then having them leave a short time later - it doesn't do anyone any good. The key is to put retention at the heart of the recruitment process because if you are looking at short term fixes, you're going to get short term gains. Identifying the right person based on the right values to the right ethos is number one because if you get the recruitment right, that relates to 75% of the retention piece. In essence, there's no magic ingredient, but one Mark Staples, Ahsun Jilani, Steve Gray, Catriona Malone and George Zitko at the Lenel S2 Envision event in March 2022. Lenel S2 are Zitko Talent partners “We focus on retention with all our employment partners. thing that I've learned from managers and from senior HR professionals within the industry is the importance of communication. One of the biggest factors in someone's wellbeing within a business is their line manager. If there was one thing I'd recommend to every business, it is to focus on communication and ensure all of their leaders are regularly ‘checking-in’. Are your people happy? What are they saying? What are they doing? What are they feeling? What's going on in their personal lives? Are they on the right development path? It's the easiest thing to do; you don't need training or to go on a course to learn. Good communication equals good retention.

Along the same lines then, if an engineer isn't happy how important is it for them to communicate that fact rather than just looking to move? It's huge, but they must be given that platform to communicate. We can't always expect our people to come to us with their problems because sometimes the ones with the biggest problems are the least likely to come forward. You've got to give people the platform to speak and provide a trusting and open culture so they can be open without fear of reprimand.

What do you think's going to happen in the future with careers in the sector? It's going to take time to change the picture in the sector, but one of our goals for 2023 is to place 250 Talent candidates into fire and security careers. The economy is going to go through some changes, clearly, and we are already seeing lay-offs and redundancy news. That doesn’t mean it is all doom and gloom. Despite some volatility I think the candidate market will remain fluid because I don't see the security industry slowing up. The businesses that have over-hired or overpaid to bring talent in to match demand will change strategy, and when that bubble bursts, there will be some good people on the market. It's an opportunity for employers to make sure that they've got whatever they need in place to attract those kinds of people. easy upsell no knowledge set-up that takes just 60 seconds to Creditactivatetospend with each time a policy you’ve sold is renewed.

The pace of change in retail has always been intense. From the introduction of selfcheckouts to contactless payments, the deployment of fully unattended environments and blended in-store and online shopping experiences, innovation has been the only constant. These changes have had a huge impact on physical, bricks-and-mortar stores. Where customers previously entered, browsed, purchased goods, and only left after interaction with a sales person – the buying journey has become far more varied and complex. In many cases, customers can now purchase goods instore, collect online purchases from the checkout or kiosks, and order goods online on their phones – all in the same physical store. All this means that retailers need to adapt quickly, and in the right ways, to ensure customers' needs are met – whatever they expect from their in-store experience.

Customer experiences

With the latest generation of smart video solutions, retailers can achieve a level of 'situational awareness' in-store that would not otherwise be possible, supporting better, faster customer service.

Smart solutions for retailers

With the latest generation of smart video solutions, retailers can achieve a level of 'situational awareness' in-store that would not otherwise be possible, supporting better, faster customer service 27

www.psimagazine.co.uk VIDEO

With the right AI capabilities built into a solution, for example, alerts can be generated automatically if the number of customers in the store or at any given part of the store exceeds a defined threshold. This allows staff to focus routine tasks such as deliveries, inventory, and merchandising, and turn their attention to helping customers on the shop floor only when required. Stores can also detect the build-up of queues at checkouts or kiosks and divert staff to those areas to reduce waiting times.

The industry's leading smart video solutions can also improve the overall shopping environment in countless other ways, from alerting staff when a product is sold out on a particular shelf, to detecting liquid spills or other obstacles that impact customers.

The good news is that the latest smart video solutions can help in three key ways:

Additionally, analysis of video data can help stores refine layouts and determine where kiosks and other in-store equipment should be positioned to minimise congestion and speed up customer journeys.

There is a lot of talk about how data analytics can improve retail operations, but according to Andy Martin, Retail & Logistics Lead at Hikvision UK and Ireland, video data has an especially powerful role to play. In particular, it has specific and compelling advantages in terms of enhancing customer experiences, boosting sales, improving operational controls and streamlining costly manual processes

While various other forms of data analytics can also provide data on the number of customers in store and their typical footfall, only video allows managers to see what a physical customer journey around the store looks like. This provides unique and unparalleled insights into how their experience can be improved, making video a true asset for customer service.

Finally, but equally importantly, automated alerts for sold-out stock, liquid spills, and other events saves a huge amount of time for staff, supporting cost reductions and ensuring that customer service is prioritised.

Business performance With smart video, stores can get real insights into how processes and product placement can be improved – leading to measurable performance gains and revenue growth. For example, the leading smart video solutions can identify merchandising 'hot zones', and to adjust product placement to maximiseBusinesssales.performance can also be increased as smart video cameras combine with other retail data points to improve in-store stock accuracy throughout the supply chain. This ensures that the right products are always available in store to maximise sales revenues and to avoid losses due to customers not finding what they need in stock.

for retail:

Equally importantly, stores can use AIenabled smart video solutions to minimise risks, such as shoplifting, that negatively impact their business performance. It becomes possible, for example, to send alerts automatically to security teams in the event of a security incident, helping to deliver major savings that contribute to the bottom line.

Another way smart video is improving efficiency is by cross-referencing transaction data with video data to reduce manual work and admin. One example of this is the ability to review video footage of orders being packed for customers at distribution centres. This speeds up dispute resolution and reduces costs associated with compensating customer complaints. Likewise, any errors relating to instore payments can be reviewed using video data that is linked with transaction numbers in checkout systems, reducing the need for indepth, manual accounting investigations.

Three of the UK’s four Mobile OperatorsNetwork(MNO) –Three, Vodafone and EE – have announced they will decommissionall their 3G networks by 2024 with EE closing their 3G network by 2023

COMMUNICATIONS

End of an era

There has been talk in the industry of decommissioning 2G and 3G for some time. In December 2021, however, as part of its plans to enable a smooth transition to 5G, the UK Government announced that the networks would be phased out nationwide by 2033. The shutdown could happen long before that, though. Some individual operators will switch off their networks, particularly their 3G networks, much earlier. In fact, three of the UK’s four Mobile Network Operators (MNO) – Three, Vodafone and EE – have announced they will all decommission their 3G networks by 2024 with EE closing their 3G network by 2023. Since its arrival, 2G mobile technology has been instrumental in machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, and it’s this approach that has underpinned how alarm signals are transferred between devices and ARCs. Even with the arrival of 3G, 4G and now 5G, most devices out there use 2G. As such, its retirement means that there’s a risk the millions of devices that rely on it– which includes a number of alarm signalling systems – will be left marooned.Theissue is compounded further by the pending switch-off of the copper-based PSTN, which is being replaced with a full fibre network

www.psimagazine.co.uk

31 Nick Whiting, Head of BT Redcare looks at the forthcoming sunsetting of 2G/3G networks and why security installers should take it seriously

The UK’s fire and security industry is facing two technological shifts that are already in Manymotion.alarm signalling solutions rely on 2G and 3G to send signals to alarm receiving centres (ARCs). But mobile operators are currently in the process of decommissioning these networks. No longer suitable for supporting the data capacity requirements of today’s communications, operators are redeploying network equipment and spectrum for 4G and 5G. At the same time, the PSTN (public switched telephone network) is due to be switched off by 2025, after which any devices that rely on the old analogue network will cease to work. As a result, alarm signalling solutions are becoming redundant as phone lines migrate to new digital services placing people and properties at risk. These changes present significant opportunities for installers to introduce their customers to next-generations solutions, connected via 4G and IP, future proofing them against these two technological shifts.

Decommissioning 2G and 3G

Another reason to upgrade now from legacy systems is that 4G and all-IP connections enable much greater monitoring of alarm solutions. Solutions today have greater capability to check devices to ensure they’re operating as they should, helping to mitigate the potential repercussions of a device failure – something often only discovered when they’re most needed and it’s too late.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Timelines for the PSTN switch-off are fluid too, with Openreach introducing ‘stop sell’ of copper-based services once areas around a particular exchange reach 75 percent fibre coverage. In fact, the organisation has announced a nationwide stop sell from September 2023, meaning all exchanges will then be impacted if they hadn’t switched prior to that point. However, communication providers are already switching their customers to new digital services, to be able to meet the 2025 deadline, as they cannot leave it all till the lastIt’sminutevital, then, that serious thought is given to future-proofing alarm signalling systems across the country in order to ensure ongoing safety and security. Installers have a key role to play in this.

Trusted installers Responsible for the fitting of alarms and alarm signalling solutions, installers hold the keys to the nation’s safety. Whether a one-person operation or part of a global brand, installers are essential to the transition from 2G/3G and PSTN to 4G and all-IP networks respectively.

that can support the nation’s demand for connectivity with more bandwidth and speed. As with 2G and 3G, any legacy alarm signalling systems that rely on the PSTN to dial out to ARCs when alarms are triggered will no longer be able to perform their given task.

For themselves, installersif customer bases and/or portfolios are still largely using technology,legacy-basedthey risk getting overtaken by forward-thinking rivals

Time to engage now Given the timelines involved in the decommissioning of 2G and 3G, and the shutdown of the PSTN, it’s important that installers engage with their customers as soon as possible to keep them safe, secure and futureproofed.Forinstallers themselves, if customer bases and/or portfolios are still largely using legacybased technology, they risk getting overtaken by forward-thinking rivals who are already upgrading customers to next-generation alarm signalling

Ultimately, solutions.these impending changes will transform the UK’s fire and security industry for the better, but we must act now. Installers have an opportunity to educate customers about the transition, assuring them alternatives are already in place to keep them safe and secure and their homes and business futureproofed.

Customers want to engage with trusted installers. That means educating and providing solutions that are futureproofed against both the mobile and fixed connectivity switch. For example, if they install a dual path solution that uses IP alongside 2G/3G, it will need to be swapped out for another solution that relies on 4G or even 5G in a few years’ time. To help provide a better customer experience, it’s important that all new solutions installed now are ready for all the transitions taking place.

In the commercial sector, where risk and insurance requirements drive demand for specific security services, the market is robust; however, it has traditionally had low single digit CAG and businesses largely fight for market share to achieveHowever, growth.inthe domestic market the industry has significantly underachieved. Penetration of professional monitored security systems is below 4% with less than 1% of homeowners committing to response services by linking to police or keyholding services.

One of the main reasons for this underachievement is that the security industry has developed effective ways to monitor alarms, but the value of the service is seriously undermined by lack of effective and affordable response options.

In a connected world, monitoring and response services have become increasingly important to many industries, but not all services are the same

The problems with poor response services link back to historic issues relating to false alarms. Police in the UK have distanced themselves from the security industry because it was a waste of their resources when as many as 98% of events were false. Years of regulation and ever more robust technical requirements have done little to make material change and simply increased the cost and complexity which in turn, serves to deter customers from buying. For many buyers the core value proposition underpinning a purchase of a security system is the deterrent value and the peace of mind gained from knowing that if they have a problem, someone will respond. This is behind the US success where 24% of all homes have professionally monitored systems. It is easy to argue that better response services could address many of the challenges currently facing the UK security industry. Taking the police out of the equation by using local professional guard companies could help the security industry grow. It relieves the concerns associated with false alarms and puts more work to local guard companies that can easily fulfil the role of Police by getting to the property quickly to see if there is a problem.

In industrial applications, remote monitoring coupled with effective response for repairs and predictive maintenance is an essential requirement in any new designs. Everything from large combined harvesters to domestic boilers, are being connected to IP and monitored. In these applications, monitoring centres play an important role, but it’s the quality and effectiveness of the response services that underpins the value proposition and delivers ROI. There is a lesson in this for the security industry where, arguably, too much attention has been paid to the alarm systems and remote monitoring and not enough has been done to provide effective response. Perhaps this could explain why many feel the UK security industry may have struggled to realise its true potential.

RSPNDR has what can best be described as an insurance model. Customers can pay less than £1/week for guard response, and this will cover up to 2 call outs/annum with the guaranteed of a 30-minute response time or the call-out is free.

The knowledge that someone will react quickly to an alarm adds significant value to both the security systems and professional monitoring services. These new services are expected to grow the market for monitoring and response services by encouraging those who self-monitor or simply have maintenance contracts to upgrade to an affordable solution that delivers greater peace of mind. Alarm systems and monitoring are important. However, effective response services are a critical part of the value proposition. Give customers a credible service at a reasonable price point and more customers will subscribe to the value of alarms and monitoring.

A new approach to alarm response

RSPNDR has taken a different approach to alarm response building a national network of professional guard companies. When there is an alarm, the Uber-like platform instantly connects an ARC directly to the nearest available patrol, tasks and guides them to the site where they conduct an external check of the property before reporting the findings. As 98% of all alarms are false, keys are rarely needed and events can be quickly closed. Where there is a need to give guards access to a property; RSPNDR has partnered Loxal to create a digital key safe that the guard can access using their app. But it's not just the technology that has changed.

The knowledge that someone will react quickly to an alarm adds significant value to both the security systems monitoringprofessionalandservices

Speaking at the time Glenn Foot, Chairman of CySPAG and Product Manager at Eaton said: “It is important that the industry takes responsibility for itself rather than being dictated to by other organisations.

“It is important that the industry otherbeingitselfresponsibilitytakesforratherthandictatedtobyorganisations”

To find out more about the scheme, why Eaton signed up and where the business sees the future for networked technology we caught up with Glenn Foot and began by discussing the current issues of note in the sector: Are you seeing any trends in the market today? There are a couple of technology trends such as the move towards IP, wireless systems and remote monitoring and management, but the main issue across the board is that the security sector is experiencing a lot of challenges with the supply chain. I imagine for the end customer it might be hard to believe how many different factors are involved with system manufacture from sourcing different components to redesigning products that will work with different components and the amount of effort involved in the process. Plus maintaining price is extremely difficult in these times with freight costs going through the roof and all of this means that planning is more critical than ever. And because the supply chains are overstretched it means that it is harder to react to new projects as instantly as we are used to. Despite all of this I’d say we've only had a few blips in supply and have generally managed to keep the entire product line going. This is not a problem exclusive to the security market is it? Every industry has been affected and we're all fighting for chips because the development of electric cars has massively reduced the number of units available – mainly due to the buying power of massive corporations that can put themselves ahead of the queue for components. Fortunately we have got very good, established suppliers that we've used for years and they are able to give us lead times going up to two years ahead. The problem of shortages affects the whole supply chain at the moment, from the manufacturer all the way through, but Eaton is a large global organisation so we also have good buying power in the market which has helped us a lot across all of the sectors we work in. How powerful is the Scantronic brand today? When I speak to someone for the first time it is quite often that a mention of the name

Taking cyber seriously

This month we meet up with Glenn Foot of Eaton to talk about the trends in connected technologies and find out how a new scheme is aimed at improving cyber security for all parties

Glenn Foot 35

“Unlike many cybersecurity schemes where the product is the main focus, CySPAG has taken a much broader view of and recognised that not only manufacturers of products, but the installer and client are key links to a cyber secure system. This code of practice ensures professionals with the security industry are taking all reasonable precautions when installing security equipment that has a cyber exposure.“Theoverall aim is to ensure products are produced and installed securely.”

It was announced recently that Eaton Security had become the first company to sign up to CySPAG, the British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) cybersecurity group code of practice for safety and security systems.

What have been the major technology developments for alarms?

Does it surprise you that we’re in 2022 and still talking about cyber security? Absolutely not, cyber security will always be an evolving topic which needs to be focused on as new threats are always emerging. I think that most manufacturers in the industry are taking the right cyber steps but now they have the opportunity to sign up to a scheme that proves it and provides the information about what will happen should any problems arise. Take security updates for example, we've committed to doing security updates for two years after we make a product obsolete; so not two years from manufacture, two years after the date of obsolescence. Which is a cost to us but we’ve made that commitment to the market so that everyone knows that the system is supported. Is that the main benefit for installers then? It will mean that they’ll know that they’re not going to fit a system that is going to be left on its own - it will be kept up to date. However there is another side to CySPAG which is a code of practice for the installer. Both codes were written around the same time and so far only the manufacturer’s registration scheme has been launched. The installer scheme is currently being trialled by NSI with the intention to make that a registration scheme as well. This will recognise those installers who follow the code and give their customers cyber security peace of mind when they have work carried out. So to confirm, CySPAG is something that manufacturers and installers will sign up to – it’s not awarded approval?

CySPAG was created to enable manufacturers to show that they had committed to best practices when it comes to cyber security and I sincerely hope that other companies will join us on the scheme. We all need to be working together on this for the betterment of the whole sector.

SECURITY (continued from page 35)

“We've really taken a stance on connectivity and security because you can have all of the features you like but if the system is insecure, then you are going to have trouble at some point” www.psimagazine.co.uk

Yes, primarily because we wish to support the industry in moving forward in its approach to cyber security, which is why we were the first company to sign up to it as well! I was actually part of the industry-wide team behind the development of the scheme, yet even while we were compiling the requirements of the campaign I realised that Eaton had already got those measures in place. I honestly believe that CySPAG is a scheme that the industry needs because it's not enough for a manufacturer to say they are secure, they should be able to demonstrate their commitment to it and at the moment there isn't a cyber security standard or a common test that you can do to demonstrate how robust your networked technology is.

Our main focus in recent years has been IP connectivity of the systems to the point that today we've embedded IP functionality in all of our SecureConnect enabled panels; there’s no extra module required, the unit has IP connectivity out of the box. Taking that to the next level, we have our own cyber security division at Eaton who perform cyber security testing of all connected product before they are released to the market. We've really taken a stance on connectivity and security because you can have all of the features you like but if the system is insecure, then you are going to have trouble at some point. We’ve had that approach since 2008 and it carries right through to our Connect cloud platform today, which is fully encrypted and secure.

Scantronic for years and won’t fit anything else which is great endorsement for us.

36

Is that why you have signed up to the BSIA’s CySPAG initiative?

CySPAG registration is only awarded once the manufacturer or installer has proven that they are able to meet the requirements of the scheme, it isn’t just a tick the box exercise. The scheme is very different to anything in any industry at the moment. A lot of schemes focus only on technology, but because we are a

SECURITY professional industry in which products are manufactured and then installed, there are some great responsibilities for involved parties.

With a DIY system the level of cyber protection is often unknown and without any official support. This can easily lead to system becoming insecure as there is often no commitment from DIY manufacturers as to when or even if they will provide security updates.Additionally, if a system is totally reliant on an internet connection or an app to set up and control it, then this is ultimately not a robust and reliable security solution, if the internet connection fails or the mobile device runs out of battery, then the homeowner can be left with a non-functional or totally out of control system.Installers that that fit products compliant with EN50131 are providing homeowner with much more resilient, reliable and robust security solution because the standards that the manufacturers follow ensure that a simple thing such as loss of internet connectivity would never compromise the security of a system.

Integration with other systems such as home automation will continue to grow, driving toward the totally connected house of tomorrow. A simple example would be the when the security system is set, that the heating is turned down and lights automatically switched, therefore saving power when the building is not occupied.

Its aim is to provide a level of confidence to the supply chain that product procured for use in safety and security systems have been produced by CySPAG registered manufacturers who have processes in place to manufacture, supply products using cyber risk mitigation techniques and provide ongoing support throughout the product

What has been the impact of DIY security systems?

So what will be the future for security systems? Connectivity will be key, more and more systems will be connected by default, this unlocks new possibilities for installers where they can offer new services such a remote servicing and even remote call outs. Connectivity can help reduce costs and the impact to climate change through the reduced need to physically travel to installation to provide support to customers.

The best approach to cyber security in our view is that it is a shared responsibility, meaning you can't put it all on the installer and you can't put it all on the manufacturer. The best example of this is with regard to security updates manufacturersas need to supply and communicate updates and installers needs to make sure that these are installed – any break in that chain and the system may not be secure. This is why there will be two codes to CySPAG and as an industry we need we need to take responsibility.collective

From a cyber security point of view, I think homeowners may be exposed to a higher risk if they use DIY systems.

the scheme, the BSIA has created a CySPAG registration website, which allows companies to self-declare that their product(s) are produced using the process described in the BSIA’s Manufacturers of safety and security systems cybersecurity code of practice. Once accepted, the company will receive a certificate and can use a CySPAG badge of assurance on their products. The self-declaration will be valid for twelve months from the date of acceptance to the scheme, at which point the self-declaration must be renewed for ongoing registration.

Door hardware for example, plays an integral role in the security, traversal and fire safety of academic settings and can be operated 100’s to 1000’s of times each day, becoming tired in the process. As such, when door hardware is left to deteriorate it can lead to inadequate operation and thus compromise fire safety and security. During term time, a fire incident can affect the operation of an educational setting, disrupting student learning and disturbing staff morale - not to mention the economic strain as a result of building damage. Over periods of closure, this vulnerability can become even more alarming - particularly for unoccupied school buildings where many fires are started deliberately and arson is a common offence, accounting for up 70% of fire safety incidents for some local authority fire brigades. And with the UK Fire Service called out to extinguish fires in approximately 1,500 UK schools per year, the necessity of maintenance periods is more evident than ever. Fortunately, making positive change over the summer break can make an

The great British summertime has arrived, known for its quintessential rainy days, packed out beach fronts and extended educational term breaks. By the time we reach August, students of all ages - from primary schools to universities - have dashed out the doors in preparation for a summer of fun, leaving behind empty academic facilities in the process.Formost of the 32,163 schools, 277 colleges and 164 universities in the UK, the extended summer break is seen as a time to reset. Yet, it also provides decision makers with a prime period to assess and attend to their facilities ahead of the new term. Educational spaces are often prone to wear and damage, as a result of their high footfall (and naturally well-trodden environments).

Ready for open doors

Alarmingly, the latest research from the BWF Alliance has revealed that almost a third of those responsible for fire doors do not understand fire door responsibility under the Building Safety Act 2022

As is stated under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, all educational establishments must designate a Responsible Person (RP) for matters associated with fire safety. In some cases, responsibility can be shared between a single person and the local authority or building owner, but as part of their obligations, the RP must possess a robust knowledge of fire safety and manage ongoing risk assessments, designed to help identify potential fire hazards within the premises. As part of their responsibilities, the designated RP must:•Ensure necessary persons are trained on fire•safetyConduct fire safety inspections, ensuring escape routes are clear and fire door sets are operating effectively • Ensure firefighting equipment meets regulations•Checkto ensure fire alarms and smoke detectors work correctly and effectively

Equipped with newly released budgets, reduced building footfall and blessed with time, the summer break presents responsible persons with an opportunistic six-week period to review fire safety and assess the operation of fire doors and their hardware. And while no academic facility is the same, all are legally bound under British and European law to possess operational fire door sets, which consist of:

Passed in April, the new Building Safety Bill is designed to raise fire safety standards in multi-occupancy buildings, by giving residents more power to hold responsible persons to account. The change is applicable for those residing in halls of accommodation at universities and comes to further combat a rise in incidents, of which in the past year, London firefighters attended 1,262 incidents at student halls in the capital alone. Under new guidance the RP is required to present residents with annual information covering the importance of fire doors and selfclosing devices. Furthermore, residents are encouraged to raise any faults or damage to door sets immediately, helping to ensure maintenance is addressed quickly and professionally.

instant impact, but where does the responsibility lie?

• Door furniture • Hinges • Locks and latches • Door closers • Signage • Exit Abovedevicesallelse, fire doors must operate as intended. In the circumstance of a fire, it’s critical that fire doors close independently and all the way, and that hardware - including hinges, handles, door closers, locks and signage - is correctly installed and maintained. And so, when it comes to inspections, it is common practice to follow a stringent five-point check, where upon examination, a responsible person must review the certification, gaps, seals, hinges and the closing elements of a fire door, ensuring each element is functioning correctly. Fires are extremely unpredictable and can begin in and out of learning hours. And when you consider that something as rudimental as an incorrect hinge can produce a lifethreatening gap between the door and its frame, the need for regular maintenance periods is clear. The fleeting British summertime leaves a small - but manageable - window for the education sector to act, adding fire safety to their own curriculum before students return and begin their own courses in September.

Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? The industry, without a doubt, is suffering a shortage of labour. We haven’t felt the effects of this too much. We are very lucky to have a fantastic group of long serving engineers who are all highly experienced and love that our work is so varied. They tell us that they like to work for the UK’s largest and leading scaffold alarm installer –it gives them kudos. For this reason, when we do recruit, we have always found it quite easy to attract the best engineers. Additionally, we operate a fantastic inhouse training scheme for those that are just starting out! What is the industry’s biggest myth?

What would be a typical project for you?

There’s no such thing as a ‘typical project’ for the security division at Panthera Group. The projects we secure range from domestic properties –whether that be a single house or block of flatsto commercial or historical buildings, or constructionEssentially, sites.our project scope varies hugely –one day the engineers might be installing an alarm on a scaffold at Westminster Abbey, the next a residential building on the Isle of Wight. Installation sizes can range from a small scaffold tower with one detector to a multi-zoned system with over two hundred different technology detectors. All scaffold alarm systems installed and certificated to NCP115.

I have personally been responsible for securing some of the most prestigious and historical buildings in the UK during their external refurbishment – that’s pretty cool. Is third party accreditation beneficial to you?

Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? All system we install are ‘temporary’, they might be required for one week or three years depending on the projects requirements. Choosing the right manufacturer and equipment technology to meet the demands of the construction sector cannot be underestimated, it is vital that the kit we install is robust, reliable and quick to install. After nearly twenty years of trading, we have tried many different manufacturers and technologies, we now use a mix of mains-powered and wireless systems, and have found that Texecom, Takex and Daitem suit our needs best. What is the best thing about working in this industry?

“The Scaffold Alarm industry is saturated with installers, but what really sets us apart is our NACOSS Gold accreditation”

For us specifically, I think that it is that people think that if they have an internal alarm system that they do not need an external scaffold alarm system. This is not the case. Insurers require homeowners, business owners and contractors etc to take all reasonable precautions to protect the building contents whilst works are underway.

Open Door is an online service from PSI that provides in-depth information from a selection of market leading companies. Here are some of the highlights from the pages of Open Door.....

Lift integration with entry level access control

For customers with several sites and/or thousands of users, a high-level lift integration with our enterprise-level intelligent integrated access and security system, Integriti, provides a seamless, unified solution to manage access very efficiently.High-level lift integration means the lift can read user credentials from entry turnstiles, or door readers. The lift’s ‘destination control’ software takes into account where each of the building’s lifts are, the user’s designated ‘home floor’ as well as where other users are going/due to go, and instantly calculates the quickest lift for the new user. The user is then immediately directed to the most efficient lift. If users have access rights to more than one floor, they can update their preference in the lift itself. The integration works with access cards, as well as QR codes – including those on mobile phones – meaning visitors can benefit from the high-level lift integration as well as regular users. Anyone accessing the building will be swiftly directly to the quickest lift, and access can be touchless too – another benefit during the pandemic. In addition, the integration ensures tighter security around accessing different floors because this is all directly controlled by the integrated system.

www.innerrange.co.ukReducing crowding and improving security with integration

The Texecom Connect SmartCom is an Ethernet and Wi-Fi communicator that facilitates the Texecom Connect app experience by connecting any Premier Elite control panel to a local area network.

Integrating lift controls with an access and security system is a practical solution, whatever your budget, says Tim Northwood, general manager of Inner Range.

Does connectivity always have to be complicated?

For customers with single sites, such as small businesses, using our entry-level integrated access and security system, Inception, some lift integration is also possible. Users must present a valid access card to call a lift, and/or when choosing a floor from inside lift. This process restricts which floor selection buttons users can press, ensuring only legitimate users can access pre-agreed specific floors. The integration allows Inception to keep a record of ‘button feedback’, showing where users have been, which is helpful for both security purposes as well as tracking user movements if any infection is recorded.

Texecom’s new SmartCom 4G system adds new connectivity options for Premier Elite systems improving connection reliability. Providing access to Texecom Cloud and Texecom Connect services via single path (4G) or dual path (4G plus Ethernet or Wi-Fi), the SmartCom 4G is always on, always ready, and always available.

In today’s connected world your customers will be used to 24/7 remote access to a host of technologies and the ability to monitor and manage systems using personal devices such as smartphones and tablets. Security systems are also expected to be fully remotely accessible and many DIY systems are fully operated by mobile technology, but can professional systems also be managed by an app? And what about the complexities of always-on connectivity?

Texecom has solutions that deal with these issues and both enhance the service you can offer your customers when specifying modern, professional alarm systems boasting simple set-up and user experience.

Eventually, one part of the office was protected by an old wired system and the other controlled by Ajax wireless detectors connected to the wired alarm system via the ocBridge integration module. The variety of technologies had to be expanded with an anti-flood system and then integrated with an app that every team member would have on their MacPawiPhone.made a decision to integrate the outdated wired detectors into the Ajax system. This approach provides an opportunity to immediately use the benefits of Ajax and eventually expand the horizon of possibilities for further improvement.

The first step was to replace the outdated control panel with Hub 2 Plus starting a gradual switch to Ajax security equipment. The previously installed Ajax wireless detectors were simply added to Hub 2 Plus. Installers and the MacPaw security team immediately saw complete information about the devices: signal level, battery level, and temperature. The security team can now remotely change the sensitivity level or deactivate the detector. With the old control panel, such capabilities would have been unthinkable.Forexample: Previously, the security team could not see the exact charge level of each detector because the detectors were not connected to the Ajax hub. The team had to check each detector manually to know which one needed a battery change. From now on, the company receives the notification and knows when the battery change is required in advance.

MacPaw had a smart office system which controls the level of light, doors opening etc but integration with the old security system did not give sufficient flexibility and restrained the app and the smart office system development. For example, MacPaw had to call a specialist from the security company to come to the office and add a new user to the system, which was extremely inconvenient; from now on this can be done remotely.

The second step was to connect the third-party wired system to Ajax via the MultiTransmitter integration module. The module has 18 wired zones for connecting devices and tampers that support four contact types: NO, NC (without resistor), EOL (NC with resistor), EOL (NO with resistor). Three MultiTransmitter modules were required for the part of the MacPaw office with the third-party wired detectors installed. More than 50 wired detectors were integrated with Ajax. The third step was to build a flooding prevention system. After updating the security system, LeaksProtect detectors were added by .simply place devices in the spots of potential water leakage. Relay was added to the system — in case of water leak, the relay sends a signal to the smart office system that sends a command to shut off the water.

Installer Access Ability UK opted to fit a Videx 4G GSM system that integrated perfectly with the existing fob reader but, crucially, solved the key entry challenges residents and the concierge team were facing.

The building was completed in 2007 and fitted with a door entry system that, 15 years later, was hugely outdated and causing issues for entry into the tower block by residents, visitors and for conciergeResidentsuse.were consistently not notified when someone was calling their apartment, so they often missed deliveries and visitors. Parts of the system were failing and proving to be very expensive to replace. Residents enter the tower block via a fob system and although this operated normally, the rest of the system was deteriorating.

Barry Kimber, a director at Access Ability UK, said: “One major issue that we needed to solve was to enable effective, easy but secure door entry for residents to authorise entry in and out of the tower block. By installing a GSM intercom system with a VX2200 panel it meant residents could receive notification of someone at the entrance straight to their phone, whether they were home or not. For example, they could be on holiday or at work but receive a call to say a delivery had arrived, grant entry to the courier driver who can leave the parcel with concierge for safe keeping until the resident returns. In terms of calling each flat, visitors now simply need to enter the number of the flat and it calls that flat directly - there’s no need to look the flat number up on the system to dial a code to then input.

“The GSM powered intercom system also enables the concierge team to authorise entry for visitors to deliver parcels or fix appliances for example, when the resident is away. Conveniently, the intercom is very easy to adapt and modify and the concierge team can programme the system both locally and remotely when flat residence changes as people move into and out of the tower block.”Alongside the GSM technology, Videx also supplied a highly customised entry panel that was not only manufactured for The Great Northern Tower, to sit within a very difficult-to-navigate glass wall, and feature the existing third-party access control reader, but also carried bespoke engraving too. For example, the block numbers are clearly identified as well as the concierge serviceBarrybutton.Kimber continued: “It’s probably the most challenging entry solution I have fitted but working closely with Videx ensured the job could be done.”
