Long term winners?

Such is the way with printed media that an article in last month’s edition proposing ideas for the new Prime Minister ended up seeing out the tenancy of the winner of the leader selection process and her team. So it’s out with the old and in with the new....

Inthe October edition of PSI magazine’s Panel feature we wrote “by the time you read this the next Prime Minister will have been selected” - well after a political month like no other, we can begin this month’s magazine with the same statement. By the time you read this.....etc

One thing is certain, that whoever does take up the keys to No.10 they will very much be focusing on the economy. The current state of play regarding the cost of living including the price of fuel and food sits atop the long list of issues that need dealing with especially as we face the run-in to winter. “Heating or Eating” scream the headlines, so the new PM will need to have a head for numbers and hope the markets react positively to their appointment or “Winter is coming” will be a threat in the real world as well as in Westeros.

For the security technology sector business is strong. There is, of course, a chip component shortage which continues to affect supply chains across the globe, but when product is available for installation the work is there. However one area where UK installers could yet see further growth is with domestic jobs. Yes, money is tight at the moment, but there is a glimmer of hope in the fact that insurers may soon be looking again at the benefits of a regularly serviced alarm - and it’s down to the work of R&D departments within intruder alarm manufacturing companies.

In talking to experts recently I’ve heard mention a couple of times of the role that water leak detection systems will have in the future and the fact that insurance companies are more wary of floods than they are burglaries. With the addition of water leak sensors linked to alarm panels, manufacturers are bringing the appeal of domestic alarm installs to the insurer’s attention which may, fingers crossed, lead to a push in the domestic market. New launches like the one from Ajax this month which not only detects leaks but switches off water supplies could be a table turner on the insurers’ opinion of the value of alarm systems. And any chance that this might lead to a reduction in homeowners’ premiums will be welcome given the current financial concerns.

These new technology developments could be long term winners, unlike some recent political appointments.

This month Amthal Fire & Security celebrated a double win with CEO Jamie Allam being named locally as Business Leader of the Year, whilst Alex Dearden was a silver winner for the Apprentice of the Year.

Jamie, who is a second time winner of Business Leader of the Year at the St Albans Chamber of Commerce Community Business Awards, was recognised for his ability to lead Amthal on a continued and ambitious growth plan, whilst maintaining its roots as an independent and family business.

On receiving the award, Jamie said: “When I joined the company in 2008, there were 30 team members. In 2022, we have a dedicated senior management team and have grown to a team of over 71 members throughout the Group business. Even with the inclusion of Integrated Protection Maintenance Services Ltd (IPL), we have never lost our commitment to our roots, and the importance of community, which has been an integral part of our growth, especially through the last few years. The award for Jamie, came just a week after Alex Dearden, Internal Sales Executive scooped silver winner for the apprentice of the year at the Watford & West Herts Chamber of Commerce Awards.

Assa Abloy announces Bird Home Automation acquisition

Assa Abloy has acquired Bird Home Automation, a German manufacturer of IP door intercom for single and multi-family buildings, for indoor station or smartphone control, marketed under the trademark DoorBird.

“I look forward to welcoming DoorBird and their employees into the Assa Abloy Group,” said Nico Delvaux, President and CEO of Assa Abloy. “DoorBird is a strategic technological addition to the Group and will reinforce our

offering with IP door intercom and provide complementary growth opportunities.”

In brief

• According to the 2022 ADT Burglary Report, Greater Manchester is the area affected by the most burglaries. Over the twelve month period, there were 14.9 residential household burglaries per 1,000 people. South Yorkshire was found to be the second most burgled area in England and Wales, with a total of 13.3 residential household burglaries per 1,000 people.

RISCO announces apprentice appointments and promotions

In conjunction with Skills for Security, RISCO has appointed its first two apprentices. Based at the company’s UK HQ in Rochdale, Mehedi Hussain and Ricardo Butler have completed training in hardware infrastructure and software platforms and are now fully fledged apprentice technical support technicians, providing first-line installer assistance as part of the in-house technical support team.

With both apprentices committed to longterm careers in the security industry – Ricardo

Butler is already planning one day to start his own business – RISCO hopes that its programme will not only help to enhance its own installer support service, but will also go some way towards helping safeguard the future of the industry by nurturing new engineering talent.

RISCO has also restructured its sales team with the appointment of four new regional sales managers (RSMs) and two promotions.

Dave Strawson has been promoted to national sales manager following seven years with the company. Patricia Jones is the new RSM for the North of England; Michael Mitchell covers Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland; Mark Ward manages the Central England and North Wales territory; Joe Boyle takes care of installers in the South West of England and South Wales; Anton Wedderburn looks after those in South East England and London.

RISCO’s UK and Ireland managing director, Mark Taylor said: “Our technical apprentices and new sales team will help to ensure that our installers receive from us exactly the products and support services they need, precisely when they need them, enabling them to efficiently deliver top quality security projects, for installations up to multi-site Grade 3 commercial.”

Sunstone Systems raises £1m in equity finance

Sunstone Systems has raised £1m in equity finance in its latest funding round. The company creates solar-powered technologies that provide surveillance, wireless networks and satellite communications. This fundraise comes off the back of a period of growth which saw the business double year on year revenue in 2021, with projections to do the same in 2022.

“A number of factors have seen demand for our products scale considerably over the last two years” said Aaron David, CFO, Sunstone Systems. “The need to have power to critical and remote locations without the reliance on fossil fuels is growing more acute by the day. It’s why we see

this latest fundraise as just the start of another period of exceptional growth.”

The latest fundraise will fuel the next phase of growth for the company. One that will see Sunstone Systems develop new products, as well as enabling the company to expand into key markets, particularly Europe and into America.

Home Office report suggests 90% of false alarms could be down to faulty apparatus

According to the latest Home Office report, false alarms make up 98% of automatic fire alarm confirmed incidents in 2020/21; 90% of this figure is due to faulty apparatus.

The research from the Home Office, which was collated from Fire and Rescue services across the country from the last financial year, shows that just 2% of the incidents from automatic fire alarms were a result of an actual fire. Most of the false alarms could easily be avoided with proper maintenance and by ensuring the correct type of life safety product is installed for the environment in the first place.

Commenting on the report from the home office, Shinsuke Kubo, Commercial Director for Hochiki Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, said: “False alarms are a major problem across multiple industries, they have a significant impact on production and ultimately the economy. Building owners who choose to work with installers and manufacturers who understand that no two environments are the same will reap the benefits because the products recommended will be both fit for purpose and properly maintained.”

The London Fire Brigade advise that if you are responsible for managing a property, it is important to make sure the fire alarm system installed is carefully considered for the type of premises and of course the occupancy.

Having said that, technology alone cannot eliminate false alarms. Other key factors must be considered to increase the overall “alarm reliability” of fire detection and fire alarm systems. These are design, commissioning, and maintenance. If these are overlooked, then the reliability of a device will drop. It’s also important to remember that over time, the use of a building may change or be adapted, any changes must be reflected in the design and maintenance of the fire detection apparatus installed.

“Multi-sensors could be the answer,” continues Shinsuke Kubo. “For complex life safety installation projects which have multiple usage scenarios, or are adapted over time, using intelligent devices can really help reduce false alarms. Modern devices which detect heat, smoke and in some cases, CO, can learn from their environments from the moment of installation.

This month Simon Banks talks to Dominic Gundry-White, Managing Director of Cannon Fire & Security. Cannon are a Commercial Security Company based in Bristol, Bath, and Swindon, providing CCTV, Fire, and Intruder Alarm Security Systems.

What is the main reason for upgrading all your digital communicators?

There is a huge change ahead within the industry as the analogue telephone network (PTSN) will no longer be available from 2025, or sooner. The disruption this is likely to cause end-users, Installers, ARCs, and suppliers is very concerning. We felt that the necessary changes needed to be made now to safeguard our customer’s connectivity. Working with CSL we were able to upgrade our alarm systems from legacy digital communicators, to the radio-only, MiniAir 2. It has enabled us to futureproof our business ahead of the ‘big switch-off’.

How did your customers respond to the requirement to upgrade?

Upgrading customers can sometimes be a challenge, especially at a time where costs are rising in other areas. It was vital for us to speak directly and openly with our customers to ensure they understand the potential ramifications if their connectivity stopped working, meaning their alarm systems couldn’t communicate. We explained that we did not want to jeopardise the service we are proud to provide. We found most customers valued our advice and appreciated the proactive approach we took. They were also persuaded by the added value a digital solution offers, including end-user Apps. Customers are notified in real time if their system is activated, providing them with the full remote control and visibility they expect with a modern alarm system.

Not all end-users chose to upgrade, but approximately 95% of our customers trusted us to futureproof their system. Other Installers may fear that their monitoring contracts are at risk during this period, however we saw less than 1% of our customers decide not to continue with this option. The change is inevitable, so informing them early and keeping the cost down was the key to the success.

Is there any advice you would want to give to other Installers who are thinking of upgrading?

The volume of sites to upgrade can be daunting, but this can be factored into the yearly maintenance visits saving both time and further costs. Initially we e-mailed all affected customers informing them of the PSTN changes and how it would impact them. We advised we would contact them to arrange their routine service or for them to contact us if they are told by their telephone line supplier that they were being upgraded ahead of our service visit. We found giving the customer this initial information really helped smooth the conversation when the time came.

Most customers were happy to proceed with the upgrade and appreciated us keeping the costs down by proactively booking the work as part of the routine service. Many remembered the television digital upgrade so were accepting of the change and costs. In addition, many favoured the upgrade to a 4G solution, away from the older telephone lines that most did not use for anything else.

New terminal specialised for facial recognition

Suprema has launched BioStation 3, a contactless access control terminal specialised for facial recognition.

In addition to facial recognition various other contactless credential options are offered to enhance user convenience, including QR codes, barcodes, mobile access cards and RFID cards. BioStation 3 features increased usability and a compact, slim body that is reduced in size by 47% compared to Suprema’s predecessor, FaceStation F2, allowing for easy installation on any door, from small offices to enterprise environments.

Suprema has also utilised a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to provide facial authentication. BioStation 3 is an ISO/IEC 27001 certified edge device that can run AI algorithms locally with an embedded NPU to maximise the performance of the AI engine. Accurate authentication is possible even for faces with various types and colours of masks, hairstyles, hats and glasses.

Upgrade allows bidirectional video for two-way comms

2N has added new functionality to its devices by upgrading its OS. The improvements the upgrade delivers are designed to support flexible working and ensure that 2N’s devices can be used by the hard of hearing.

CBRE’s EMEA Occupier Survey 2022, published in May, concluded that only 6% of companies are currently requiring employees to return to the office on a full-time basis, with 72% saying thawt they are moving towards a ‘hybrid workplace’ model. Over 60% of companies are looking to increase the provision of mixed, shared or mobile work settings, with nearly 80% planning to downscale dedicated assigned seating. This change has led more and more companies to re-consider the viability of a ‘traditional’ receptionist, a person sitting on the front desk for the full working day to oversee access into the building.

In response, the new 2N OS enables bidirectional video through the 2N IP Style intercom. This allows visitors to see the person they are talking to as well as vice versa, which is of particular value for buildings which decide to go without a dedicated reception. NVR series capable of working with 8K images

Hikvision has unveiled NVRs that support video recording, storage, transferring, decoding and output of up to 8K images. The new M-series NVRs are ideal for environments where a wide field of view, and high image resolution is needed.

The NVRs are equipped with an 8-core 64-bit SOC chip and DDR4 memory kits, which provide full guarantee for “True 8K” functionalities. Enabled with dynamic cache technology, the devices are able to adjust the cache required by each channel as per highconcurrency and high bit rate video stream.

Featured with a codec core that supports up to 32x 1080p @ 30fps, the devices can efficiently decode 8K real-time streams for two channels at the same time, enabling smooth live view and playback. New fire detector range features patented smoke chambers

The new FireProtect 2 lineup from Ajax includes, at launch, seven models of fire detectors. The re-engineered detectors feature a patented smoke chamber that is ultimately dustproof and impenetrable for insects, thermistors that ensure rapid detection of temperature spikes, long-lasting battery life, and many accompanying hardware and software improvements.

The FireProtect 2 lineup features detectors of two enclosure types. Depending on size, they are equipped with different sensor combinations. Detectors with a bigger enclosure feature a smoke chamber plus a temperature sensor, and an advanced version also features a CO sensor. The smaller ones have no smoke chamber and feature up to two sensors: a sole temperature sensor, a sole CO sensor or both “under the hood”.

Detectors have different battery options. The RB models feature replaceable batteries that provide up to 7 years of operation and SB models work 10 years from sealed batteries (can’t be replaced, require entire detector replacement).

ThisCL4500 GD lock is described as a “medium duty, electronic patch lock offering all the benefits of Codelocks’ Smart Technology”. “Suitable for inswing doors, the lock fits existing Rondo type glass door preparations”. The lock is supplied with a standard strike for solid door frames or an optional glass door strike box for use with Rondo prepared glass side panels can be purchased. This makes it ideally suited to offices, meeting rooms and hired spaces.

The lock is operated using keypad entry and / or RFID cards and with a key override. No wiring is required and a two year guarantee is

* and # keys completing the set. The * key is reserved for certain programmes and when using NetCodes and the # key is used for programming the device.

An initial 8-digit factory-set master code is used to access the device, and this must be changed after installation.

The major programmable options are selected by pressing the # key followed by the master code and then the program number; in between each section entered, the keypad will flash blue once (·) to confirm input and twice (··) at completion. A red flash indicates incorrect entry. The available options include:

01· to 03·· – to change the Master and SubMaster codes, and delete the Sub-Master.

04·· – Code Free mode setting.

05·01· to 05·04· suspend or restore individual or all, code-free periods.

06· – change the re-lock delay time. Enter a time from 02 to 30 seconds (default is 5 seconds).

07·· – Emergency Open cancellation.

08·01·· to 08·02·· – disable / enable the locked status indicator. The red LED will flash every 5 seconds (reduces battery life).

10· to 12· – update the Time & Date, DST months and DST hour on the lock.

13·· – feature restrictions. Follow with a zero or 1 for User codes, Smar t Cards and NetCodes respectively.

Downloading and using the app requires registration and acceptance of the associated Privacy and Terms of Service agreements. These include references to the fact that your personal information may be transmitted and stored in territories other than where you are located or potentially in other jurisdictions where there is no privacy protection available. These are referenced to Taiwanese law. As with all such software a cautious approach to allowing access is advisable.

When synchronising the lock with the K3 Connect app, the lock will capture the time from the managing mobile device.

In addition to lock management, the app can be used to e-mail access permissions to other users of the app. These can be very closely controlled to be valid from a specific time & date and duration.

The “Locks” tab shows any paired locks and access information, logs and synchronisation options. The “Clients” list shows all cards and user number in alphabetic order. The User pins are shown unless a nickname is added in which case this is displayed instead.

Performance

The lock is very easy to operate and programme. There is a possibility of number repetition if the button is pressed for too long a duration, so a quick press of each button is advisable.

Mobile phone access requires the app to be loaded onto each user’s mobile device and Bluetooth to be enabled so that permissions can be communicated.

The reader can handle up to 150 smart cards (MIFARE Classic 13.56MHz), 100 phone clients and 100 User codes.

If three incorrect codes are entered the keypad will be disabled for approximately 10 seconds to deter repetitive entry attempts.

Up to ten code-free periods can be set. These allow the door to remain unlocked for a set period on any specified day of the week, for example 9:30 to 17:00 Monday to Friday.

A full Factory default can be performed by disconnecting the batteries and reconnecting with a specific key entry.

Battery life is stated to be around 10,000 operations; a low-battery warning is given when these need changing.

Construction

The overall build quality of the product is good. It is light weight meaning that installation on a pole or similar structure will have a reduced sway as the unit does not have much weight to it. It is a simple looking product with 3 indication LEDs on the bottom of the unit – which is beneficial allowing for indication of connection and troubles without the requirement of having to arrange direct assess to the device.

The product comes in two colours – white and carbon black, but special requests can be made through SilverNet to suit a specific application that requires aesthetics. The cable entry is on the bottom of the unit which is supplied with a tight fitting stuffing gland to endure a water tight fit.

The 3-axis bracket provided is constructed of a light weight, heavy duty magnesium alloy, which works well for most applications and can be pole mounted on a 3”/75mm pole or wall mounted but if the required mounting surface is a larger pole style, a larger bracket in not available for purchase on the website.

Set up

Installation of the radio units are simple due to the POE based connection. This can either be achieved by POE injector which is supplied or through the use of a POE switch. As this device will typically be used in an outdoor setting, consideration of external rated CAT6 cable must be made, SilverNet have pre-sized leads available for purchase to aid with installation.

your connections and throughput, link quality, and the ability to test multiple data streams to ensure a quality installation. This software is simple and user friendly and during the testing process we didn’t come across any major issues with this software and found it to be very helpful in monitoring the connections between radio units.

Performance

The radio is advertised as a 2km range device with a 100Mbps throughput as standard on this model but with the ability of licence key upgrades to 240Mbps/500Mbps throughput.

During testing, the unit was set up on the coast across an approx. distance of 650m connected to two IP fixed lens IP cameras and one IP PTZ camera. The throughput via the gigabit ethernet interface worked great over that distance with minimum disruptions on image quality and telemetry on windy and days of heavy rain. The high mean time between failures (MTBF) built into the product meant that it stayed reliable throughout testing of the product and made it a very suitable wireless transmission medium for this application.

For those worried about secure connection when using wireless transmission, the 5Ghz frequency transmission is encoded with 256bit AES encryption meaning that any data transmitted across this network will be difficult to obtain.

Conclusion

This specific product lends itself very well for video surveillance applications with the ability to transmit reliable video data and telemetry across a distance for a very reasonable price. If there is a requirement for utilising these units for extending a network across buildings, then it would be suggested that the licence key for software upgrade for throughout is purchased and set up or the larger transmission units are used, but for most surveillance applications the 100Mbps throughput should be sufficient.

Entrepreneur looks to the future

This month, the security industry got a boost for future stability with the news that The Banks Foundation has been set up to identify and support the next generation of entrepreneurs in the sector. Here, we talk to the man behind the scheme

Itwas announced in October that The British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) wholly owned subsidiary, Skills for Security, had sold part of its share equity to The Banks Foundation (TBF). With a 49.9% share in Skills for Security, TBF aims to allocate generated income to activities that are centred around young entrepreneurs which encourage and advance their careers, training, salaries and seed-fund start-ups.

TBF was set up by entrepreneur and founder of CSL Group, Simon Banks, a long-standing advocate of supporting and mentoring young people into the IoT, Security and electrotechnical sectors. TBF is not-for-profit and is a family foundation, designed to enable Simon to give something back after a lifetime career, and a successful one at that, in the security industry.

Under the new ownership, employees of the training body will also become shareholders of Skills for Security.

On the announcement of the news, Simon Banks, founder of TBF, said: “I’m passionate about helping young people realise their potential, whether through apprenticeships or entrepreneurship or both. TBF provides an important boost for young enterprise – these are people that have something that you can’t teach and may ordinarily miss the opportunity to demonstrate their extra-curriculum abilities. By creating wealth in our sector, we will ensure we attract the very best talent and move the security sector forward, benefiting the entire value chain.”

Also speaking at the time, David Scott, Managing Director, Skills for Security, said: “This is such a positive step that will allow us to scale-up our training operations nationally. We are well used to Simon’s involvement as he’s been Chairman for some time.

“Critical to the investment was to ensure our employees are all shareholders, something that Simon introduced into CSL some twenty years ago; this is massively important for morale as we grow and means that the team will be focused on the same goals whilst sharing in the financial rewards.”

To find out more about the entrepreneur scheme and why it is fundamental for the future of the security sector, PSI caught up with Simon Banks:

Why did you set up TBF and what are its goals?

The Foundation is all about getting talented young people into our industry in order to create wealth. The entrepreneurs in our industry create jobs, wealth and a value stream for everybody in the sector and we believe that we need more people like that to help create opportunities and innovation. We have started this journey with fourteen schools and colleges to identify the next generation of talented people that can help the entire security sector thrive. Funnily enough it's not always those students that shine academically at school that are the ones we think will be most suited to achieve with the Foundation. Just because you don't fit in with the academic curriculum of a school doesn't mean you are not bright and have the right mindset and drive to be an entrepreneur.

How are you working with schools? We are giving 700 children £1 and asking them to turn it into £10 by using a number of different avenues. These could include buying an item for £1 and selling it for profit and then repeating the process or they could use the money to buy a bucket and a sponge and wash cars, but

the essential point is, we do not tell them how to make the money, they must come up with the idea themselves and then execute it. This is not an original initiative it is just a tried and tested method for finding people with a talent that cannot be taught in a standard school curriculum. This is something that bolts onto the existing curriculum and is designed to be thought-provoking and to identify the people we want.

What happens then?

We are running the programme from October 2022 to March 2023 to see how well the students can do before placing the best performers into jobs or on a path of further education that more suits where their talents will be most developed. For example our logo was designed following a competition between college students and some of the ideas suggest that careers in marketing would be ideal for those that took part.

The Banks Foundation will be like sponsors for the students in that we will provide the money and work with them to pay for any training or education that is required to get the best people into the security industry. It may be that we speak to brands like Hikvision or Texecom for example about a placement for one of the stars maybe as a BDM or in marketing or sales where they can pick up skills that can be nurtured by the employer. And this is what I want from people in the sector - I don't want money, I want their support in the form of offering a position for the next generation in order to develop the talent they have which may not be an academic strength.

If I can go to a company and say, “I have someone here who I think will fit in really well with your team and has a lot to offer” I hope that will be met with a positive response whoever the company might be.

Where does the SfS purchase fit in?

Skills for Security is doing a fantastic job and is doing very well financially which is why I've invested in it. The money that is made from this will be used to fund TBF. We are not a charity; we are all about profit because the more profit we have the more we can spend on good causes.

If there are security companies out there that want to work with us, we just need them to offer opportunities; we're not looking for financial support of any kind.

Why is Simon Banks doing this? To be honest I was that person that didn't like the academic structure of education. Early on, I was very lucky to meet some people who were willing to give me a chance in this sector and I want TBF to be a vehicle that identifies talent and supports future entrepreneurs on their journey. It is different to the work of SfS, which is all about training apprentices, we really need that engineering skills pipeline too, but TBF is about finding the right type of person with the right attitude to growing the business side of security. If we don't have talent coming through then everyone in the security chain loses out. I want to leave a legacy that fixes the huge problems we face; the engineer skills gap with SfS and the business talent gap with TBF.

What are the long term plans for TBF and SfS?

We need to have the programmes working on a national scale. I said very early on with the work we do with apprentice training we have to recognise that London-based installation companies are not going to send their apprentices to Birmingham so we are addressing that with new training centres at selected locations. We currently have 550 apprentices on programmes with SfS and want that to reach 2000 within the next two to three years. We will achieve that by bringing the training to the installers and making the process much more convenient. The great thing is that the engineers we are producing are really very good and they are bringing new talents to the sector specifically with regard to their familiarity with using networks, apps, smartphones and IT systems.

At the end of the day, our industry protects lives and property and we have to carry out that role in the most professional way that we can. We cannot be relying on cheap, self-install systems to look after our people and assets. The professional security industry is a timehonoured profession and when we really need protection and security that is what we must be in a position to be able to provide. If we are to have a professional, high quality security installation sector in the future then we need to find and support the next generation of entrepreneurs as well as fully-trained engineers.

Is third party certification beneficial?

Third party certification is very beneficial for us within the fire and security industries - it goes a long way. Do you think there is an engineer skills shor tage? Any trouble recruiting?

Chubb also has a very successful apprenticeship programme that nurtures the next wave of fire and security engineers. It has been running since 1995 and offers individuals the opportunity to grow and progress into full time roles with the organisation. One of the most notable graduates from the Chubb apprenticeship programme is our now Managing Director, David Dunnagan.

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems?

One thing that immediately springs to mind, and given the economic situation, price fixing on contracts is a standard request we get from customers - which is virtually impossible to provide.

What is the industry’s biggest myth?

There isn’t a ‘one size’ fits all in fire and security.

Just because your previous approach was successful in a project, it doesn’t mean you will be able to copy that to the next project. A “cookie cutter” approach just does not work.

What impact has smart/home automation had on your business?

“Smart” buildings is the biggest buzz word in the industry. We see it as a connected environment. All the technologies need to communicate to offer the end-user a valuable

experience. Smart automation is leading this charge and aiding in sustainability as well.

What would make your job easier?

I suppose a greater openness to new technology and a shift in attitude away from “if it aint broke, don’t fix it”. Other than that, the challenge is what makes the job fun. Proving to the client a concept and then seeing their reaction with tangible successes is well worth it.

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product?

The exciting thing for me is a lot of what I hoped to see a couple of years back is already happening. Things like advanced camera analytics, mobile card credentials, more sophisticated VMS systems and fire moving towards IoT.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

This industry is built on relationships, so enjoy each moment meeting with people and spend the extra time solidifying those meets.

Will England ever win the World Cup again?

As a South African, I am not as invested in seeing the trophy “brought home” but as a fan of the game, I believe that if there was a time and a team to do it, it would be now.

If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money?

Without doubt, take the family on a beach holiday to the Maldives or Bahamas and enjoy some time in the sun.

Improving access control

Electronic access control has rapidly advanced since the days of keypads and card readers, yet many businesses have not evolved with the latest security technologies and systems and could be missing out or even running risks

Whenlooking at the 2022 State of Physical Access Control report

conducted by IFSEC Global, just 41% of businesses believed their current physical access control systems either met or exceeded their security requirements. This means that 59% of companies are still operating an access control system that may not be fit for purpose and the end user is missing out on the features and benefits of the latest technologies on the market. So what developments in the access control sector could you recommend to customers to improve their security?

Bluetooth Bluetooth technology is fast becoming a dominant contactless access control solution thanks to the popularity of smartphones. As businesses move away from options such as keycards and fobs, today’s systems are being designed to support mobile credentials going forward. Recent studies predict that more than 120 million mobile credentials will be downloaded in 2023 alone.

This is especially appealing following COVID outbreaks and variants, allowing for a sanitary, hands-free access system for businesses that is fast, flexible and cost-effective that makes it easy to onboard new users remotely, thereby providing a great user experience.

As a technology, it is simple to install as users can download the security credentials straight to their smartphone by clicking the link sent from an access control operator or downloading an app. Access is then granted or denied after credentials are checked by a Bluetooth or QR code reader.

This eliminates the need for costly cards or fobs, relying solely on the phone to access the access control reader.

Biometrics

Biometric access control is a step beyond physical security removing the need for cards, codes and smartphones altogether while strengthening security.

Biometric data is built up of fingerprints, voice patterns, retinol, facial, and even DNA

scanning. It has increasingly become more widespread in use as this access control system is a more convenient way of securing the premises and eliminates the risk of physical keys, cards and fobs being stolen, or keypad codes being passed on to unauthorised people.

In recent years, the rise of this technology outpaced all others and facial readers are the fastest growing system for quickly granting and denying access to personnel. The integration of biometrics and security systems has now become more utilised with improvements in quality and price. Innovation has played its part in helping to drive down system costs and made it easier to manage through the cloud.

PSI caught up with Nick Burke, Managing Director UK & Ireland at Almas Industries to find out more about the benefits of the latest access control systems:

During the pandemic everyone said that access control would go contactless, so no more keypads, has that happened?

It was a concern when the pandemic struck and we went into lockdown because our business is predominantly fingerprint access control and we had several customers worried about making a deliberate touch action in the biometric terminal. We took a step back and thought how do we manage this and is it a real problem? First

of all, of course, our advice was for users to start sanitising the devices which was the general advice for any multi-use surface. However, with our everyday movements we were still using door handles and rails, so touching a fingerprint terminal was no different. To be honest, it was a concern at the height of the pandemic when it was top of the news agenda day in, day out, but those concerns started to subside and clients became more comfortable using access control.

Saying that, I think it did create a shift in terms of the use of contactless and it did accelerate our plans to start introducing facial recognition systems. The period of COVID allowed us to spend time developing the solution and we have now integrated our software with facial recognition terminals so we can offer both options to clients. Some clients want the facial option just because it is contactless, but in terms of comparing the actual security features, fingerprint recognition is still a more secure and established biometric technology than facial. Looking back, I would conclude that without doubt COVID accelerated contactless recognition.

What kinds of systems are you typically taking out and what are you replacing them with?

Our approach is one of consultation so we conduct security audits for our clients by looking for any risk vulnerabilities so that we can write a report and discuss the raised concerns. Generally, this will be around the use of PIN codes and swipe cards. When was the

changed? Is there a record of who has swipe cards? What is the process when employees leave and is security part of that? And most important of all, when was the last time site security was reviewed? Most of the time we find that clients don't review security because they haven't recently had an incident so all must be well. What we do is explain the benefits of safeguarding and improving security - replacing PIN codes cards with biometric access control - which is far more secure. You can't falsify your biometric attributes and the software is incredibly flexible enabling you to manage access and create so many different roles within the software that it really tightens up security.

Why have you gone down the rental route for new kit?

We offer technology on a rental basis because we feel that it's a more flexible approach in terms of budgeting for customers. We will agree a price for the solution that they've taken from us and then it's a fixed price every single month, all inclusive of the renting of the equipment including the supply, maintenance and support as well. Clients like that approach because they can budget for it and there are tax advantages as well. Also, it's not a depreciating asset so when we come to renew the equipment, customers can easily upgrade.

How much input does the end user have in product specification?

One of the most important questions we ask when speaking to clients is what they want to achieve from the system. That point gets them thinking about what it is they are protecting and the impact on safeguarding the employees or customers on-site. That conversation leads us to look at what system is currently installed, identify any risks and then recommend where we know we can improve security. We often recommend software and hardware that the end user doesn't even know is available, so our job is to really gain the trust of the client and get them to see the benefits that the new system is going to deliver. And when we do talk to them about the technology that they didn't even know existed, it really enlightens them; remember, some people still think biometrics is something out of sci-fi movies!

What's a typical access problem that you address for clients?

Firstly, they may have had an incident take place and they want to know how they can prevent it from happening again in the future. One of

our biggest markets, for instance, is with nurseries where safeguarding is paramount. So, customers are looking for the best security measures within that environment. If an incident has happened, our approach is to try to highlight where clients can improve their security. Security is such a high-profile issue, who doesn't want to be open minded about improving it? Employers have a duty of care to protect their employees as well.

Can CCTV be used for access control?

There are some great analytics and AI functions in cameras today and performance is improving all of the time. However, while CCTV in isolation is a good prevention tool, providing an external shield to a property, it doesn't stop someone from going into the building so you still need access control technology in place for the best physical approach to security. CCTV with analytics can recognise a person but it can’t control who enters a property, however it can restrict vehicle entry when linked with ANPR.

So how does access control integrate with other technologies?

We're finding one of the trends in the market today is clients looking for building management with a totally integrated solution. Our Optima 360 software, for example, integrates CCTV, access control and intruder alarms into one platform with remote management functionality. This single integrated solution means that users can set up different alerts, rules and triggers so if someone leaves a door open then that rule would make sure that the camera feed is available for review or remote monitoring. Clients on the larger corporate scale want a more integrated solution and that is one of the trends that is really developing and has really picked up pace this year.

Have we moved on from people being worried about biometric data security?

It is something we still get asked about on a regular basis especially since GDPR was introduced. Our response is to explain how fingerprint and facial data is encrypted into binary code. We can advise them around privacy impact assessments and communication with end users and while it is a concern, when people are reassured, then it's less of a worry, but it is not a barrier to biometric technology adoption. be sure that we're managing and protecting their data and over the years data storage and handling has become a really important part of what we do.

What does the future hold for access control?

People will always need security and the market is forecast to grow around 8% every year. No doubt there will be access control and security trends that we’ve yet to experience but I think biometric recognition is going to become more and more relevant because of the risks around manual controls such as managing entry cards for example. I do think the traditional forms of access control will diminish and with the rapid growth in the use of biometrics we might see an expanding range of systems like fingerprint, facial, voice and vein recognition and even body scanners. At the moment some of these technologies are quite expensive but as price points come down, the systems will become available to a much wider market and will become more regular installations for security engineers. In the future AI and the integration of systems will provide a blended solution that improves security, productivity and incident response for businesses.

The Access Control 3.0 era

Theterm ‘Industry 4.0’ is now understood and used all over the world. It no longer requires any explanation

Until very recently, access control has always followed a completely separate path, primarily because it has always been driven by different objectives – security and convenience rather than, for industry, productivity and profit. Access control also has a much, much longer history.

The first industrial revolution started around 1760, with the transition to new manufacturing processes, initially in England. By then, access control had already been around for, probably, 6,000 years at least. It started with the invention of the first lock and key device. No one knows exactly who got there first (the earliest we know of was found in the ruins of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria), but we can guess at the transformative impact that it must have had in the ancient world. It launched the first access control ‘revolution’ (let’s call it ‘Access Control 1.0’).

That simple lock and key model did evolve over the centuries that followed. The Egyptians, for example, developed wooden pin-tumbler locks, and the Romans were the first to use metal – which enabled stronger, smaller keys which could easily be carried in a pocket. Much later, in 1848, modern flat keys were introduced by Linus Yale Sr. – but these were still pintumbler locks.

We were well into Industry 3.0 – which digitised industry through the development of computing and communications technologies –by the time the second access control revolution (‘Access Control 2.0’) arrived. The year was 1983, and Charles Walton received the first US patent for a passive RFID (radio frequency identification) device to enhance security in door-locking systems.

This qualified as a ‘revolution’ in access control because it fulfilled three key criteria:

a) It was not a minor or incremental change –it was a fundamentally new way of operating.

b) It had a transformative impact on access control.

c) It was adopted at scale, all around the world – so its effect was felt globally.

My contention is that we have, in the last few years, moved into a new era for access control

which fulfils the same three criteria – and which we should therefore call ‘Access Control 3.0’.

Access Control 3.0 is defined by seven core elements:

IP technology: 2N launched the first IP intercom, the 2N Helios IP Vario, in 2008. This did not kick off Access Control 3.0, but it was a necessary first step. IP technology has transformed access control since then, enabling the development of smart, flexible, fully customisable solutions – which can also be integrated into complex, comprehensive security systems. The kinds of innovative solutions that are commonplace today would simply not be possible without it.

Mobile credentials: It seems so natural to us now, but phones have replaced watches, cameras, calculators, calendars, CD players, TVs, books, newspapers… and, most recently, credit cards. Keys will soon be added to this list, with IP technology facilitating the emergence of mobile access control. Driven by the convenience it offers, industry forecasts indicate exponential growth in mobile credentials over the next few years.

access: an intercom for guests and visitors who need to be authorised, and access readers for pre-registered tenants and staff who don’t.

Remote management: IP technology has also enabled access control systems to be managed remotely, in real time. This has made a huge difference in residential buildings, where building managers are able to monitor, maintain – and fix – a large number of devices from one place.

Cybersecurity: The truth is that access control has not always been front of mind when it comes to cybersecurity, but more and more companies now appreciate that if access control systems are compromised, the daily operations of the building – and, consequently, its residents – could be at risk.

Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG): This is not a technological development, but ESG is as important for the access control industry as every other sector. Proving your track record on sustainability, supply chain integrity, diversity & inclusion, employee welfare and local community relations is a defining part of this era.

Privacy and the protection of personal data: Mitigating the risk of personal data being misused is now a primary concern for access control companies. It is a significant barrier to the development of biometric-based access control, including facial recognition technology, because regulatory compliance

(including people’s right to have their personally identifiable information deleted or ‘forgotten’) is much more complicated than it is for mobile credentials.

Several of these elements also apply to Industry 4.0, which is why, for the first time, there is a direct link between the revolutions in access control and those in industry.

The question is whether all of this is enough to qualify as a ‘revolution’ in access control, and therefore justify the title of ‘Access Control 3.0’?

Think back to the three criteria I outlined earlier:

Does Access Control 3.0 represent fundamental change? Yes, the changes introduced by IP technology and the move to mobile access control are unquestionably transformative rather than incremental.

Has it had a transformative impact on access control? Yes – on both security and convenience, the two eternal objectives for access control.

Have mobile credentials, multi-user technology, remote management etc. taken over the world? The honest answer to this question is “not yet” – but there is no doubt that we are on the cusp of this kind of widespread change. In residential buildings, for example, we expect to see an acceleration in the trend of homeowners integrating access control into their home automation systems. As more and more people start to appreciate the full potential of smart intercoms and answering units, these devices are being transformed into the central control panel, regulating everything from the lights, airconditioning and music system through to the garage door and lawn irrigation system. They are also being connected with security systems to deter intruders while, at the same time, allowing couriers to deliver packages even when no one is at home.

These kinds of solutions are already popular. Very soon, based on the current pace of change, they will be the norm.

So while the Access Control 3.0 era is probably still in its infancy, things are accelerating fast. It took 6,000 years to move from locks and keys (Access Control 1.0) to RFID devices (Access Control 2.0). It took less than 40 years from that point to the emergence of Access Control 3.0.

As Access Control 3.0 continues to evolve and mature, our industry is already looking ahead and investing into the next big technological innovations that will drive transformative change. What might that future look like? It’s not yet clear – but it’s going to be fun to find out.

The organisers of the IFSEC International and Firex events hosted a golf day at Celtic Manor, South Wales, in late September 2022. Supported by PSI magazine and sponsored by Technical Resources and Texecom, the invite-only event saw installers, distributors, manufacturers and customers compete for the inaugural IFSEC Cup and other prizes.

The Roman Road course opened in 1995 and was ranked ‘the top inland course in Wales’ by Golf Monthly Magazine.

The par 70 course overlooks the Severn Estuary with views across to Somerset and

Devon. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, it is named after the old Via Julia Roman highway that ran through its fairways.

The venue for numerous European Tour and Senior Tour events, this challenging course features some long open fairways but also a number of twists and turns through trees and across streams - many of which caught out the guests on the day of the competition!

Thecompetition, which encompasses two separate events – one for electronic security installers and the other for installers of fire safety devices – aims to help tackle the growing engineering skills gap and attract and retain the next generation of security and fire systems installers. This year’s competition saw over 240 entrants take part across the two competitions, a number only set to increase as the competition continues to grow. This is the first year the fire alarm competition has been included as part of the WSUK portfolio and is a fantastic opportunity to shine a light on the importance of life safety systems that keep people and properties protected.

The final of this year’s competition will take place in Barking and Dagenham College. Skills for Security who are contracted with WSUK as a competition organising partner to run and manage the event on behalf of the fire and security sector. Skills for Security, as the leading sector apprenticeship and training provider, works closely with partners throughout the sector to ensure the competition is delivered above industry standards.

The competition is a gruelling two-day event where the apprentices need to survey, design, plan, install, commission, repair, maintain, and audit fire and security systems. The competition is designed in such a way to be a level above the standard of even the best Engineers in the UK. The purpose of this is that the apprentices are challenged above their normal day-to-day duties. To do this, they will be using the latest technologies like Texecom Cloud, CSL Gemini and HIK Connect to carry out full remote maintenance and diagnostic activities throughout the competition.

The competition couldn't be a success without our partners and friends, and this year is no different. SSAIB and the NSI auditors will work closely with lead judge Darrell Gilmour (SfS) to assess and judge this year's competition. Darrell says, "having the leading inspectorates from both the NSI and SSAIB really adds great

value to the judging process. I am both thrilled and excited to be leading this year’s judging for the competition."

BFT has opened up more training days at a time when the security installation sector continues to face skills shortages – and as many security teams will be preparing for potential new regulations introduced by the Protect Duty Bill.

The Bill covers legal duties to consider the risk of terror attacks in public places and, while it has yet to progress through Parliament, once it passes into law larger venues will be required to devise and provide specific security plans for a terror attack.

“With the Protect Duty Bill becoming closer to legislation, more and more organisations are likely to be considering Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) as part of their security plans. Anti-terrorism bollards are often the simplest and most versatile solution, but for installers who are new to these products, it’s often useful to have a level of support that goes beyond the details included in a manual,” said Richard Winstanley, UK Sales Manager at BFT Automation.

Held at BFT’s offices in Swindon or Stockport, training is tailored to the needs of teams or individuals, from apprentices through to experienced installers who would like to update their skills in particular fields.

Training is being delivered by BFT’s own technical staff, who have years of training and experience in working with its solutions, and typically encompass both theoretical and practical learning. Working test models offer hands-on practice.

“We don’t run standardised training as we recognise that everyone’s requirements are different,” explained Richard.

“This means that individuals will only receive training that’s relevant to them –whether they’re an apprentice or an installer with many years of experience. And, as all our training sessions are conducted in small groups, people get the individual attention they need, as well as the opportunity to have open discussions and ask questions.

“The aim is for installers to leave with the knowledge and hands-on-experience necessary to provide a quick and safe installation every time.”

The cloud and challenging times

is changing everything. We now live in a world where cloud infrastructure and the exchange of information through data centres underpins the very fabric of modern society. This is further enhanced by the IoT; connecting and communicating with other devices and systems over the internet and/or private networks, and AI; using data to augment human decisionmaking processes.

When it comes to physical security capabilities, digital transformation has ushered in a new era of hosted security platforms that eclipse the limited capabilities of legacy, analogue systems to offer a wealth of benefits.

Yet physical security businesses have been slow to adopt cloud, often staying within their comfort zone by continuing to offer more traditional security systems. As a consequence, they have not been able to pass the benefits provided by intelligent cloud-enabled systems on to customers. Now, with the opening up of the global economy after Covid leading to huge pressure on supply chains, and a cost-of-living crisis with inflation and energy prices running at their highest rates in decades, companies across Europe that are clinging to traditional business models will have many hurdles to face. This all amounts to an urgent need for security businesses to rethink how they operate and look for ways to work smarter. Migrating to cloud holds the answer.

A brighter future

With critical functions such as banking, client management (CRM) and email systems all being delivered through the cloud, it’s only natural for firms to migrate their video surveillance and access control to more efficient and compliant platforms. Getting to grips with cloud physical security means understanding the benefits of software-as-a-service (SaaS), the revenue model of cloud, and the advantages for customers of solutions such as video surveillance as-aservice (VSaaS) and access control as-a-service

By broadening the scope of products and services offered, the calibre of future projects can be improved, and, ultimately, the way security businesses operate can be changed for the better. With skills shortages and recruitment challenges adding increasing pressure, the migration to cloud can actually lead to better use of current resources, the mitigation of rising salary costs and the multiplying of revenue streams. But first it’s essential to build knowledge of this new world and to fully understand how to make use of the opportunities it presents.

Recurring revenue

Moving to a SaaS revenue model means that customers are charged per device per month, allowing contracts to be leveraged as a sustainable revenue source. The ongoing relationship with the end-user opens up an avenue to upselling more features, with applications such as people counting, AI intrusion detection and virtual concierge providing a continuous revenue stream and meeting evolving customer needs. In addition, the ability to carry out remote maintenance simplifies delivery and ultimately saves money.

In contrast, a traditional security system typically requires large upfront investment from the customer, with the addition of recurring costs for video backups, system updates,

manual server maintenance and the energy use associated with running and cooling servers. In addition, the value of the technology continues to depreciate, becoming redundant after a lifespan of as little as 5-8 years, and requiring a whole new system to remain sufficiently protected.

A cloud solution, maintained by hardware upgrades and software updates, facilitates simple plug-and-play capabilities so that components can be easily upgraded or scaled to meet the fluid, dynamic requirements of the modern business, and to keep the system current. Customers only pay for what they need, when they need it, making cloud more affordable and representing real value for money. For the security business, making the switch to cloud represents recurring revenue and more predictable budgeting.

Improving security

As physical security continues to evolve, customers will increasingly seek solutions that fit their industry-specific requirements which will often include the streamlining and automation of security and also the optimisation of business processes. Cloud allows insights to be unlocked from visual data that would otherwise be invisible to the human eye. With a dedicated platform that can be accessed from any computer or mobile device, decision makers, armed with meaningful metrics

based on real-time data about their company operations, can make more informed decisions.

From the perspective of the physical security business, migrating to cloud allows them to deliver a solution that meets the evolving needs of the customer while representing significant savings and better use of people and resources within their own business. Often, the shortage of workers results in highly paid, highly skilled engineers being employed to carry out simple tasks. With cloud, a skilled professional can set up systems remotely from their own premises for a number of customers, not only saving money on fuel but also completing several customer jobs in the time that it would take to set up just one system at a client’s site. More business is sold and deployed faster, representing a better return on the salary investment of the individual.

Partnerships to aid growth

In order to unlock the full value of cloud, businesses will need to enlist the services of security practitioners who understand the converging world of physical security, cloud platforms and the capabilities of networks, systems and software. Innovative technology, partnership and collaboration can help companies operate much smarter and more securely. For security businesses, developing knowledge and understanding of the cloud and how it functions opens up a world of wideranging possibilities based around the very latest innovations.

A trusted partnership between likeminded companies across the supply chain can create joint business growth through the reselling of a wider range of security products based on the SaaS model. And as customers increasingly carry out due diligence to determine the integrity of vendor, technology and supply chain, so security professionals who seek partnerships built upon high levels of trust are much more likely to achieve long-term success.

The challenges facing businesses are not going to dissipate any time soon, and continuing to do the same is not going to alter the outcome for the security business. Limiting negative impact requires creative thinking. It’s clear that cloud physical security will become the default setting for video surveillance in the professional security industry; positioned as not just business security, but rather a business opportunity.

The AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components. The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system. Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones.

Review: A compact wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with home-automation systems. Score: 8.5/10

Pyronix – MCEXTERNAL-WE

This tamperproof and weatherproof contact extends perimeter protection applications to securing sheds, garages, gates etc, with remote voice push notification alerts via the smart device apps, HomeControl2.0 and ProControl+. Featuring an IP66 rating, this discreet and versatile Grade 2 device is described as easy to fit and calibrate.

Review: The product is constructed very well. The casing is made of a hard polycarbonate with a deep grey (anthracite) finish which makes the door contact look great. The overall performance of the product did not disappoint during testing as it managed to maintain a high signal strength at all times as well as being very responsive. Score: 8.5/10

Ajax – MotionCam Outdoor

The Ajax MotionCam Outdoor is an IP 55 rated combined external PIR sensor with inbuilt capture camera for use with the latest Ajax Hubs that support visual verification. The detector has settings for the image resolution and number of pictures sent on alarm. After dark the unit has two high-intensity infrared LEDs to provide illumination for the camera’s monochrome mode.

Review: A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification. Score: 9/10

Eaton – i-on10 KP

The i-on Compact Security System is a Grade 2 wired intrusion detection panel with 10 zones and up to 10 users and 4 keypads. It is promoted as being suitable for simple, entry-level burglar alarm systems to protect homes and small commercial installations.

CSL – MiniAir 2

MiniAir 2 is a single-path signalling solution that utilises a 4G/LTE-M path to signal an alarm from a protected premises to an ARC. It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails.

Weston-Super-Mare benefits from wireless PTZ installations 360 Vision Technology has confirmed the rollout of its TX Direct, wireless static IP address PTZ cameras, across Weston-Super-Mare, North Somerset.

Deployed across areas popular during hours of night-time economy, but not yet covered by the fixed cable North Somerset CCTV system, TX Direct cameras have been installed by Select Electrics, primarily to protect areas identified where women may be vulnerable when heading home after evenings out.

With funding from the Government backed Safer Streets Fund, currently ten TX Direct wireless cameras have been installed to help tackle a mix of safety issues. Located at points along popular routes out of the town centre and a local car park, the new 360 Vision TX Direct cameras are now in service and making a positive impact on street safety.

Offered alongside the existing wireless TX camera range, 360 Vision TX Direct camera technology provides seamless, direct ONVIF integration into Video Management Systems (VMS), rather than via a hosted server or thirdparty software. This installation flexibility meant that camera locations for each of the individual cameras could be prioritised without the constraints of ‘line-of sight’ or problematic cable routing associated with traditional fixed cable dependant camera video transmission methods.

Evolution has been appointed by Goldsmiths, University of London to review its security systems and managing ongoing maintenance.

The university has an on-site security team, which monitors CCTV and security systems from the control room, as well as a team of over 40 guards that patrol the campus. Due to a high level of faults and costly service call outs, the security team sought a new security partner that could provide a higher level of service and account management and help reduce the

A typical traditional static IP address solution will consume 20Gb of data at best per month. If streamed live and uncompressed, this allowance would be used in less than a day! With its fixed IP address, TX Direct offers North Somerset a viable alternative, delivering data allowances of 1000Gb and above, allowing cameras to be streamed 24/7 back to a central monitoring location, with minimal installation time and no adverse impact on infrastructure.

“Up until recently the cost of transmission using a SIM card has been financially prohibitive to most councils and authorities,” says Chris Harrison, CCTV Manager, Corporate Services, North Somerset Council. “Our yearly transmission costs with the 360 TX Direct solution are just £480 per year, just a fraction of the cost of the SIM alternative or rented fibre-optic solution. Wireless is cheaper, but its coverage is limited to an unusable amount. With 360 TX Direct, whatever the mobile network used, there is always over 95% coverage.”

As well as providing on-site maintenance services, Will is also working with the Goldsmiths team to produce a review of all existing systems and to provide cost effective support ideas and recommendations including the introduction of new technologies and phasing out legacy assets.

In addition, Evolution is providing a bespoke and detailed training programme for the Goldsmiths team to upskill and ensure all staff are proficient with all systems and software and feel supported in their role.

Cameras now protecting the Piazza Lucio Dalla

The Piazza Lucio Dalla square hosts a range of events and entertainment for people of all ages, including concerts, theatre performances, street food and children’s workshops. The new space is also a meeting point that can be used in all weathers thanks to the canopy designed by architect Renato Bernardi in the 1950s.

As part of the restoration, the city authorities realised the need for a video surveillance system that could monitor the square in all conditions, morning and night. Wisenet Q Series PTZ cameras were installed across the square, with pan, tilt, and zoom cameras chosen to move easily across the square when investigating an event or tracking a person of interest. The cameras provide up to 23x optical zoom, with IR LED to monitor images clearly in low light conditions. They can identify objects up to 100 metres away in Full HR resolution. The cameras also come with

Smart access solution for collaborative workspace

Chiswick Works is a collaborative community workspace based in Southwest London. It is managed by X+Why, who offer flexible daily passes for collaborative workspaces and short or long-term memberships for dedicated offices.

The management team at X+Why needed to modernise the outdated and varied access control systems across their UK sites. Their overall aim is to have a centralised system that can be remotely managed from any of their locations across the country. This will enable greater convenience for and flexibility for their customers and simplicity for their site managers when granting access.

Currently at Chiswick Works, they have 50 doors, and 117 active members requiring varying levels of access, depending on the type of membership they have with X+Why.

Trey Nelson-Campbell, Community Manager for X+Why, is overseeing the implementation of Paxton10, a combined access control and video management system. Trey explained: “The most important thing we wanted with the new system was for our clients to have the best possible service and experience, whilst not feeling restricted. I see many of them lose access cards regularly and get stuck outside the building or their office. We were looking at security systems that will help to eradicate this problem as it takes up so much time re-issuing access cards.”

Ambush Security Systems installed a centralised Paxton10 Server which will eventually control access across all the sites X+Why manage. This server can operate up to 1000 doors across 100 sites, making it a cost-effective and truly scalable use of hardware. Alongside the server, they installed Paxton10 Slimline Readers on all 50 internal doors, and keypad readers on the main front entrance as well as a bike shed which connects to the main building, providing further flexibility with access via PIN/code.

Infrastructure and security for regenerated and growing town

Axis Communications has supported its long-term partner NW Security Group in delivering a security solution, protecting people, premises and assets as part of a town regeneration project. The solution has been designed to meet the evolving requirements of Whitehill & Bordon town as it undergoes a complete transformation into a sustainable, healthy and connected town that is a safe place to work and live.

This project showcases the smart-city capabilities of modern security solutions where, rather than being used for security alone, they become woven into the very fabric of a development. A setup of multiple cameras and IP audio devices helps to deter criminal activity and prevent violence, while supporting the aims of Whitehill & Bordon to become more connected through the use of IP audio, analytics and a live camera for the streaming of events. The technology can also be used to gather intelligence about the use of facilities, helping to guide further development which will take place in phases over a 15-year period.

The project saw 200 hectares of land redeveloped to include 2,400 homes and a town centre. The opportunity to install modern technology from the outset saw the Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company turn to NW Security Group to design and install a system utilising Axis technology, offering centralised management capabilities while being highly scalable to keep pace with the town’s

Perimeter security fencing for water treatment works

Jacksons Fencing has installed Securi-Mesh security panels and ball-stop fencing for a water treatment works in Surrey. Perimeter security and access control are essential at most water treatment works, however at this site, there were additional challenges.

The treatment facility shares a boundary with a recreation ground, therefore there is a high risk of objects such as stray footballs entering the site facilities. As a result, a practical solution compromising more than just boundary security fencing was needed. Additionally, the recreation ground is in close vicinity to a local community centre with an attached preschool, so ensuring all are safe and secure is paramount.

The whole solution has been built from the ground up with cybersecurity considerations front and centre. People-counting capabilities provide business intelligence about the use of the town’s facilities, while also helping to keep people safe during the town’s many events. The security solution at Whitehill & Bordon represents a long-term investment, with rugged, hard-wearing technology and components, combined with the ability to update and add features as required. This represents excellent value and supports a 15year development plan.

A total of 100 Axis network cameras and other devices were chosen as part of the new solution. These included PTZ cameras that can cope with all weather conditions allowing for effective monitoring across the site in resolutions of up to 4K, a range of all-in-one speaker systems and a live-streaming camera with 30x optical zoom.

The solution also comprises Axis network switches and an AXIS V59 PTZ network camera with broadcast quality for the live streaming of an array of events, such as music and comedy nights, both online and to giant billboard screens situated around the town.

In order to create a safe, secure, and longlasting boundary fencing solution for the water treatment works, more than 230 metres of Securi-Mesh security panels were installed around the perimeter, backing onto the treatment works itself. Two different heights were specified; 3 and 5 metres, and these were installed to prevent the risk of vandalism and tampering with the high-security site. A break-in could result in a threat to public safety, so preventing this was a top priority.

The fencing boasts an anti-climb design and it is also highly resistant to cutting with conventional hand tools. The tamper-proof bolts and clamp bars secure the overlapped mesh panels to posts, and this system further deters any form of criminal behaviour or entry by preventing the panels from being prised away from posts.

A sound investment for the Kia Metropol Arena

The Kia Metropol Arena in Nuremberg, Germany, opened in 2021, and hosts football at the Bundesliga level, corporate conferences, and cultural events for over 4,000 spectators across four stands. Thanks to cost-effective solutions planned and implemented by Bosch, the arena

The building makes the most of IoT, connectivity and digital solutions: In addition to IP technologies for video surveillance, intrusion and fire protection, the arena also hosts an integrated solution for public address and voice alarm, which completely dispenses with analogue transmission paths.

The technological heart of the system is the IP-based Praesensa system from Bosch, a solution with a built-in fail-safe due to its multichannel amplifier architecture. A digital mixing console and radio microphones are connected to the system, and a total of 56 certified full-range loudspeakers from Electro-Voice were installed in the interior of the Kia Metropol Arena.

The acoustics of sports halls are often considered particularly difficult to get right due to the reverberation caused by the spacious architecture however the 20,000-watt system transmits excellent sound, guaranteeing clarity of speech in every single seat.

Announcements can be made live or played automatically from digital memory. Meanwhile, maintenance by Bosch can be carried out quickly and remotely, while adjustments can be made easily by updating the software.

Engineer Ali Tremasi has joined Inner Range as a pre-sales technical consultant. His role includes designing integrated access and security systems for would-be customers, consulting on system designs and ensuring that integrators and endusers understand what the systems can deliver.

Ali was previously a technical engineer for Hikvision and a BT field engineer for tech support and delivery firm Enjoy UK.

Joe Rogers has joined Astra Security as Project Manager with a focus on designing integrated security systems as well as managing the installations in accordance with client specification, industry standards and appropriate timescales while working to a pre-determined budget.

He is appointed after spending seven years working for BMW car dealership Dick Lovett and most recently spending three years as Service Manager for Motorrad. This broad ranging role helped hone his customer service and man-management skills, monitoring KPIs and productivity for technicians and service advisors, working to tight schedules and deadlines.

Joe said: “I’m really excited to be joining the team, and looking forward to getting to know the business better and use my previous experience to add value. My focus in the short term will be on learning as much as I can about the industry and technology.”

QED has announced the appointment of Michael Hooley to the role of Junior Account Manager.
