STANDARD ISSUE

At the time of going to press, the industry was gearing up for 2024’s The Security Event at the NEC in Birmingham. While many exhibitors and seminars will cover a range of subjects there is one innovation that is bound to have a high profile

If you’ve ever watched a car advert on the telly you will be familiar with the phrase “fitted as standard”. It refers to those little extras that the manufacturers would have you think should come at a premium, but due to the healthy competition in the market they’ve had to bundle them in. For example, in years gone by air conditioning would have elicited an “ooh it’s got AC” comment and it’s the same with power steering, Bluetooth connectivity and other “luxuries” but today, the manufacturers fit it all across the range. Try saying, “no thanks I don’t want automatic lights” and see the sales assistant’s jaw drop. Essentially everything that was a breakthrough at the time becomes something that must be included as a basic because it is an expected norm of the product.

As in the way of many software-led developments, the latest upgrades of the system are starting to include AI. If you are a user of a program such as Photoshop you’ll have noticed that AI is a recently added function of the software and has replaced manual tasks, making it much simpler to remove a logo on a photo that you specifically requested a PR company to not add in the first place but they did anyway, for example.

We’ve seen the same in the security sector with analytics like motion sensing now coming packaged as standard, embedded into the camera whether you specified it or not. In the early days of analytics, such wizardry was the stuff of countless articles in this tome whereas today they are like the woofers and tweeters of the Not The Nine O’Clock News sketch about record players, you’ve got them whether you want them or not grandad.

So, the latest big thing in the sector is AI, in fact it’s the big thing in just about every sector except roofing or plastering, and this is now beginning to go the way of the “as standard” services as explained in the interview article this month. Manufacturers now include AI capabilities for free in their portfolios and it is not only bringing installers and their customers huge improvements in efficiency, but also helping to bring the whole idea of AI and its benefits to a wider audience, much more quickly.

TSE 2024 will see more AI-based tech than ever before, meaning it does appear that the time of AI being adopted by our industry is here. So, it’s over to you to get your customers to start using the new “as standard” options.

Facial recognition code of practice is released

THE FIRST British Standard code of practice focusing on the ethical use and deployment of facial recognition technology (FRT), developed on recommendations by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), has been released by the British Standards Institute (BSI).

The code of practice, Facial recognition technology –Ethical use and deployment in video surveillance-based systems – Code of practice (BS 9347:2024) – has been developed by the BSI to allay concerns by helping organisations build public trust with its proliferation prompting concerns about safe and ethical use. The BSIA’s work began in 2020 with the setting up of a special interest group dedicated to the issue, publishing the ethical and legal guide on facial recognition.

The standard will now allow the legal and ethical usage of this technology advancement in improving the safety and security of people, property and places. Addressing the ethical challenges faced by those using the AI technology, its foundation is based on six overarching principles of ‘trustworthiness’, namely governance and accountability, human agency and oversight, privacy and data governance, technical robustness and safety, transparency and explainability, diversity, nondiscrimination, and fairness. The origin of the principles of trustworthiness come from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), EU, and alignment with UK AI Regulatory principles.

The standard is applicable

to the whole supply chain, beginning with an assessment to determine the need to use FRT, to its procurement, installation, and appropriate and continued use of the technology.

To avoid confusion, the standard also provides a clear delineation between the types of FRT deployment. Those being its use for identification (who is it?) purposes where a ‘human-in-the-loop’ is necessary, and for Verification (is it you?) purposes where human intervention is not needed.

Follow PSI

Read the code of practice here:

Pauline Norstrom, CEO, Anekanta Consulting and Anekanta AI, also Chair of the BSIA’s AI & Biometrics Special Interest Group, said: “The release of the FRT code of practice is a significant moment in the journey towards the ethical use of this AI biometric technology in the United Kingdom. It is different to other standards for AI and biometrics, crucially, it contains a metaphorical ‘stop button’ to cease use if impacts cannot be mitigated. It also frames FRT as an AI technology which aligns with the definition of AI in international standards and new or pending regulation.”

System Q - Vox400

WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

• Vox400 audio player

• Quick start guide

The System Q VoiceOFF Vox400 is an IP65 externally rated alarm activated audio message player to welcome, warn or inform people. The unit is supplied with six pre-recorded messages and has the capability to have custom MP3 messages recorded onto a microSD card. With remote connection, the messages can total up to 9,999. Its 10-Watt amplifier produces clear messaging and can be used to relay audio from an additional source for intrusion challenging or information.

GETTING STARTED

The Vox400 is housed in an ABS plastic enclosure of approximately 188(w) x 236 (h) x 80 (d) mm including the speaker cover. A cable gland adds around 8mm to the height of the box.

The lid is removed by releasing 4 x plastic non-captive screws. Inside the lid is a clearly marked instruction sheet for the various connections, information on micro-SD card use and a QR code instructing you to “Watch the video here”. Unfortunately, this resulted in a “404 Error - Page not found” message and no related video could be found on the System Q website, however a video for an earlier model was found through their associated “VoiceOFF.com” website.

The enclosure base has four ‘keyhole’ slots for wall mounting the unit. There is plenty of internal space for cable connections, these are made to a group of 19 terminals at the lower right of the pcb. Terminals are a standard size that can take a regular 3 mm terminal driver. The first 8 terminals are designated as alarm inputs 1 to 6 with a common at either end of the block. Next is a 3-way block for relay output (NO, Common, NC), then 3 for Line Out (L, C, R), 3 more for RS485 (C, Rx, Tx) and finally a 2-way for 12-volt power (-, +).

The power supply is not included but

is simply a 12-volt 1.5A power supply (POW803 recommended) that can provide the unit’s maximum 200mA demand and 55mA standby.

An RCA (phono) connector at the lefthand side of the board is used for audio

input, a multi-turn potentiometer at its left is used to set the trigger level for the input to override the messages. Alongside the micro-SD card slot is an RJ45 socket for the network connection. A yellow LED indicates activity.

THE UNIT IS SUPPLIED WITH SIX PRE-RECORDED MESSAGES AND HAS THE CAPABILITY TO HAVE CUSTOM MP3 MESSAGES RECORDED ONTO A MICRO-SD CARD

Loudspeaker audio output is fed from a 3-way terminal block near the top of the board. This is designated L, C, R, with the speaker connected to the R channel leaving the L channel for any optional slave speaker. A couple of further multiturn potentiometers at the bottom right of the board control the volume level for the L and R channels respectively.

oudspeaker audio is fed from -way board. This is L, C, R, with connected to the R channel

A pair of function reset links are provided on the board, these are normally in their open state and can be used for IP and password resetting.

Care should be taken when refitting the lid as the seal beading can slip out of its groove and potentially compromise the environmental protection.

OPERATION

Once powered the unit is ready for operation. Its six alarm inputs are normally open and can be easily tested using the flying lead that is supplied connected to the first common terminal.

Six pre-recorded messages are provided on the included 128MB card. The first three of these are warning messages to deter intruders, the next two are welcome messages and the final one plays the sound of police car sirens in the distance. The warning and welcome messages are all around 6 to 10 seconds long and the siren plays for just over two minutes.

These can be replaced with your own messages, or a new micro-SD card used with the files being stored in a “SYSQ” folder on the card and the files named as 0001.mp3 to 0006.mp3 as required.

When using remote control of the unit via network or RS485 connection, the system can handle a vast range of files up to 9,999 as long as the same 4-digit file name format is used.

The unit includes two amplifiers with one driving the main speaker and the other available to drive an optional slave speaker unit, the Vox120.

Line out is available to feed an additional amplifier.

The unit has a simple webserver that allows the IP addressing, Device name and password to be changed. The password

A VERY SIMPLE TO INSTALL, FLEXIBLE AUDIO MESSAGING DEVICE THAT CAN BE DIRECTLY LINKED TO ALARM SENSORS, DOORBELLS, PRESSURE MATS OR CONTROL SYSTEMS

is not forced so can remain at its simple default. DHCP is not enabled by default so for use on a network you must first access it using its default IP address of 192.168.1.254. Control software in Lite and Pro versions is available to manage and provide scheduling of messages.

PERFORMANCE

On activating the inputs, the unit gives a very clear audio output from the preloaded MP3 messages. These are spoken by a male voice with a clear English accent. A wide range of additional or custom messages can be downloaded or purchased from the “VoiceOFF.com” website and these can be chosen as computer generated voices or those of a male or female professional voiceover artist. Alternatively, you can simply record your own so long as they are in mp3 format and suitable named. The alarm inputs all have transient protection devices fitted and the relay output is a true mechanical relay. The

relay state changes when any of the input states place the unit into play mode and remain active for the duration of the message. If the message is repeated due to a continuous alarm input, then the output relay will briefly change state at the end of the message and re-establish to its alarm state.

The six inputs are in priority order with one being the highest; if a lower priority message is being repeated due to a maintained input, the higher priority message will play as soon as the current message ends. If the lower order input is still active, the repeating message will then continue. Network / RS485 and then the Audio line input are the highest priorities and will take priority over the contact inputs.

CONCLUSION

A very simple to install, flexible audio messaging device that can be directly linked to alarm sensors, doorbells, pressure mats or control systems.

BRINGING AI SEARCHES TO ALL

AI is revolutionising the security industry by enhancing surveillance capabilities without additional costs. i-PRO’s Active Guard harnesses this technology to maximise the value of video data efficiently. So how can software alongside technology improve the efficiency of your customers’ surveillance searches without any additional cost?

i-PRO wants to make it easy to get the most value out of video data. As part of its open strategy, Active Guard plugin software delivers object classification for forensic searches and live events directly to VMSs like Milestone, Genetec, Luxriot and others. With the combination of i-PRO cameras and deep learning technology, operators can search for images using the attributes of people and vehicles, based on the metadata generated by the i-PRO edge AI devices. Furthermore, edge analytics in the cameras eliminates the need for analysis servers and provides lower-cost security solutions.

We caught up with Philippe Henaine of the i-PRO EMEA Product Team to find out more about the technology and to discuss the role of AI in improving not only surveillance installations but also the world of business information and performance efficiency:

HOW DOES ACTIVE GUARD WORK?

In simple terms I would describe Active Guard as the heart of the whole AI eco-system: The cameras themselves are the eyes monitoring the space with the powerful AI chipset processing the

information. Active Guard then segments all this edge-processed information and makes it easily manageable. Users can access the whole database generated and filter based on attributes generated through AI metadata, like vehicles, people, objects, etc. These search capabilities include, for example, specifying a person wearing red shoes and moving in a specific direction, thus enabling the user to find the target much quicker than they would be able to when using a traditional non-AI system.

In addition, because the server is essentially just operating as a database, we don’t need a GPU or a high-cost server. With the data coming from edge processing cameras, one dedicated server can manage up to 300 cameras compared to an analytics server managing around 20 cameras which needs a costly GPU. i-PRO has strategically chosen this approach to remove entry barriers towards AI, making this new technology and its benefits accessible easily and without sizable upfront investment.

In a nutshell, Active Guard utilises AI to process video directly on i-PRO cameras, enabling rapid and detailed searches based on metadata like appearance

“WITH THE DATA COMING FROM EDGE PROCESSING CAMERAS, ONE DEDICATED SERVER CAN MANAGE UP TO 300 CAMERAS COMPARED TO AN ANALYTICS SERVER MANAGING AROUND 20 CAMERAS”

and behavior, all without the need for expensive servers.

WHO CAN REAP THOSE BENEFITS? IS IT A RETAIL MONITORING CENTRE RATHER THAN A SINGLE SHOP, FOR EXAMPLE?

Active Guard is ideal for anyone using surveillance, from small shops to large monitoring centers, enhancing security without increasing costs. The costs of AI cameras today compared to non-AI cameras a few years ago are now the same. We didn’t increase the cost of our cameras; we added AI to the products without increasing the cost. This means people can have AI cameras and analyse what is happening much more efficiently without needing to spend more money than they are used to for non-AI devices – whilst having much more benefits and smarter security installations. For monitoring centers, the analytical

INTERVIEW www.psimagazine.co.uk 21
Philippe Henaine

capabilities will be a great help because operators can do much quicker searches and carry out other tasks such as setting up live watch lists to be more proactive and spend their time on our tasks than watching the monitors.

There are lots of examples of how the advanced search will help the customer including tracking a specific person in real-time and then raising an alarm if they are spotted on the premises, or if a certain vehicle enters the site. Also, if you are a company without monitoring support that has experienced an incident over the weekend and you want to check the entire 48 hours of footage across 50 cameras, this could be time-consuming. However, by using the people detection function of Active Guard you can pick out the intruder in a matter of seconds, just by looking for the right data.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF AI ON HUMAN ROLES?

Whatever happens with AI going forward it does not take the role of humans out of the process as the AI will not make any actionable decisions regarding an incident. The AI will just show the desired images to the operator. For example, if you take a city that has 300 cameras with five operators it would be impossible for the operators to watch the footage from all of the cameras at once, but using AI they can set the system to show footage when a specific event occurs, such as a car driving the wrong way down a road. The AI itself does not make any decision; it will just ensure that the operator receives the images alerting them to the predefined

“PEOPLE CAN HAVE AI CAMERAS AND ANALYSE WHAT IS HAPPENING MUCH MORE EFFICIENTLY WITHOUT NEEDING TO SPEND MORE MONEY THAN THEY ARE USED TO FOR NONAI DEVICES”

situation so that they can decide what action needs to be taken. While AI enhances surveillance efficiency, it really supports rather than replaces human operators by identifying and alerting them to critical events.

We are very much committed to ethical design and use of AI technology – think transparency, accountability, and putting people first. As AI keeps getting smarter,

i-PRO makes sure our technology aligns with ethical standards. Installers are key to this mission. By setting up AI in CCTV systems, they’re not just boosting security; they’re also spreading the word on how we can use AI responsibly. Together, we’re steering technology toward a future where innovation and ethics coexist, without the need to choose one or the other.

www.psimagazine.co.uk INTERVIEW 22
“CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH METADATA SEGMENTATION IS ONE THING, BUT ORGANISATIONS CAN GET A LOT OF IMPORTANT BUSINESS INFORMATION FROM MODERN SYSTEMS”

HOW CAN INSTALLERS UPGRADE SYSTEMS WITH AI WITHOUT THE NEED OF REPLACING ALL THE EXISTING CAMERAS?

AI is the main topic of interest in the security surveillance market today. From around 2010 we moved from VGA resolutions to 4K and this increase in resolution was the driver of the market for some time. From 2020 onwards, the major innovation has been in AI technology, and we are seeing a steady rise in the number of analytics functions of cameras, as well as the processing power – the amount of video footage has been and is still rising, so there is the need for smarter operations inside the security industry. Analytics on the server is not something new, but AI at the edge brings extra benefits in terms of efficiency like time and money savings that end users should be made aware of. Everyone has security cameras, but not everyone is making the most of their advanced capabilities yet.

We understand that not every installation may be equipped with AI yet, so installers might have a customer with non-AI cameras in a system, that is only 2-3 years old and far away from having to be renewed. Also here, i-PRO has come up with an approach to make witnessing the advantages of edge-AI easy without the customer having to replace the whole installation and carry the cost and effort. There are two ways that non-AI cameras can become AI-enabled. Firstly, we have our Smart Box functionality that can receive the stream from any camera and enable people detection, vehicle detection and intruder detection plus connect these insights to Active Guard.

The second option is to use our X-series

cameras. Adding one X-series camera to an existing system (or replacing one existing device) would convert three non-AI cameras to AI-capable ones. So, if your customer has a site with 150 cameras but wants to benefit from AI and Active Guard, by adding 50 X-Series cameras all of the devices will become AI-enabled.

Therefore, installers should highlight how AI can transform standard cameras into powerful analytical tools that improve security and provide valuable insights, all at no extra cost.

AS A COMPANY HOW DO YOU DEVELOP SOFTWARE AND INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY WITH OTHER APPS?

At i-PRO, we put AI at the core of our company, we want everyone to have easy access to this new technology and use it efficiently. That’s why when we moved from being Panasonic, we created a new R&D team in Japan dedicated to working with an open approach to AI integration with our VMS partners. Active Guard gives us a way to have easy compatibility with our VMS partners, so instead of having to integrate apps one by one to the VMS we just integrate it into Active Guard. We are also open to third-party applications such as Vaxtor or Morpho, applications that can make your installations way more customised and tailored toward the used cases. Also, these apps can simply be installed in our systems via Milestone and Genetec platforms. So, we have our team working on new technologies and we are equally working in collaboration with third parties for dedicated apps. Active Guard sits in the middle acting as a gateway for customers, making it easy to

implement third-party applications into the end-to-end AI ecosystem.

HAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AI MEANT THAT CAMERAS ARE INCREASINGLY INFORMATIONGATHERING DEVICES RATHER THAN JUST SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS?

Absolutely, yes. If we look back, surveillance cameras historically were just monitoring a predefined space. Then from 2010 to 2020, the VMS market was booming, maybe even with a feeling that the camera hardware did not add too much value as it was just the device to provide footage, but not adding intelligence. So it was very important for us to bring back value to the hardware, and developing AI on the edge has helped us to do that. Crime prevention through metadata segmentation is one thing, but organisations can get a lot of important business information from modern systems: If you are a retailer, you can learn a lot about your customers, such as their demographics, how they move through the store, how many visitors your have and which ones are the weak times of your store. You can also see the effects of in-store promotions and the positioning of certain product lines. So, cameras are certainly much more than security devices - something that installers need to keep in mind when talking to customers about upgrading their technology about how it can improve their business operations.

WHAT WOULD BE A TYPICAL PROJECT FOR YOU?

DMi undertakes a vast and diversified range of projects across various sectors, which can involve single disciplines such as fire or security, or multidisciplinary, encompassing fire, CCTV, intruder, access, and disabled refuge.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ‘GO TO’ TECHNOLOGY/MANUFACTURERS?

We are a Gent System integrator for fire and promote this technology; however, we continually work in collaboration with all our supply chain partners to provide our valued customers with the information on the latest technology solutions that fit their requirements and budgets both now and in the future. This ensures that the solutions we provide will continue to meet or exceed their expectations and remain maintainable throughout the lifecycle.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING THIS INDUSTRY?

I enjoy the challenges of meeting the client’s specifications and expectations by delivering high-quality solutions and installations. I have always taken great

“I ENJOY THE CHALLENGES OF MEETING THE CLIENT’S SPECIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS BY DELIVERING HIGHQUALITY SOLUTIONS AND INSTALLATIONS”

Name: Robert Moore

Job title: Operations Director

Time in security/fire: 28 years

Company name: DMIntegrated

Location: Airdrie

Areas of expertise: Fire and security industry

Accreditations: NSI 9001, Fire Gold, Nacoss Gold, 45001, BAFE Fire, CHAS, construction line, cyber essentials, TSA, Safe Contractor, BM Trada.

pleasure in seeing the DMi contracts we are currently working on, or have worked on, throughout my tenure at the company.

IS NSI CERTIFICATION BENEFICIAL TO YOU?

DMi Integrated recognised that when establishing our fire and security business, we would require full accreditation from a well-known industry governing body that had been established for several years. There were a few options available to us, however we selected the highest award, NSI Gold, for both fire and security.

When we were reviewing our options, the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) was widely recognised as the main certification body for the UK security sector. We verified before making our decision that they would audit and closely monitor all of their approved companies in order to ensure that as members, we maintain the high standards required to achieve the certificate in the first place.

In achieving and maintaining NSI Gold, we recognise the ongoing work and high standards required to pass the stringent auditing processes that NSI conducts throughout the year; however, for our business, this allows us to achieve the highest accreditation, which in our industry is recognised by consultants, insurance companies, and the majority of our client base, placing us in a position to participate in a large number of tenders and works as an accredited Gold member of NSI.

DO YOU THINK THERE IS AN ENGINEER SKILLS SHORTAGE? ANY TROUBLE RECRUITING?

DMi Integrated recognises there a skill shortage in the industry and we continue to take on apprentices each year to fulfil roles within the business; we are fortunate that we retain the majority of them once they complete their apprenticeship and attain engineer status. The costs of high-quality engineers would appear to be driven

by external organisations such as large FM providers, making it challenging for a SME company to retain or match engineer pay.

ARE THERE ANY COMMON REQUESTS FROM CUSTOMERS THAT GIVE YOU PROBLEMS?

I find that if a customer is given the time to explain what they are looking for and we, as specialists, respond with good advice, it often works. The client is spending money on a solution that they believe is necessary for their premises, so we need to give them the best possible advice and solution, as well as aligning their expectations on what they can expect from the budget they have available.

WHAT IS THE SECURITY/FIRE INDUSTRY’S BIGGEST MYTH?

From my own point of view, I believe the industry feels there are misconceptions about what can and cannot be accomplished with fire or security equipment, both in terms of application and the longevity of some of the equipment required by clients.

WHAT IMPACT HAS SMART/HOME AUTOMATION HAD ON YOUR BUSINESS?

To be honest, none at this time, however this may change as we look for new sectors in which we can grow.

WHAT WOULD MAKE YOUR JOB EASIER?

I believe that keeping our industry rates on a level scale is driven by third parties, resulting in bidding wars during which we all feel the pain of winning work.

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE/FANTASY ELECTRONIC SECURITY/FIRE PRODUCT?

I never had one until our strategic partner Autonomous iOt developed their Intelligent Hybrid Technology solution, which harnesses the use of renewable energy to help protect the environment, which has smart LED lighting, CCTV and sensors integrated within the unit and can reduce energy consumption by up to 80%. This was an absolute game changer in my opinion, and seeing the solution being installed across the country in person was amazing to witness.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF?

Listen and learn from your college lecturers and tradesmen, make sure you achieve your grades at college and achieve the rest through hard work and dedication.

WILL ENGLAND EVER WIN THE FOOTBALL WORLD CUP AGAIN?

Still laughing…..

IF YOU WON £25,000 WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT?

WHAT GRINDS YOUR GEARS?

Do you have a security industry pet hate? What is the most frustrating thing you have to deal with and why does it cause problems?

Like any job, there will be aspects of your life working in the security industry that drive you round the bend. Whether it’s slow responses to product support or poorer than expected product quality, you will have your own pet hate about the sector. Here, the PSI Panel tell us what they would like to see going into the security industry Room 101:

DAVE TATE – AJAX SYSTEMS

When it comes to pet hates, one aspect that is still commonly met is the prevalence of outdated and cumbersome security systems. The most frustrating thing to deal with is the inertia in adopting modern technologies and practices, which often leads to inefficiencies and vulnerabilities in the security landscape.

This reluctance to embrace innovation not only hampers the effectiveness

of security measures but also poses significant risks to clients and their assets.

To address this issue, it’s crucial for the security sector to foster a culture of innovation and collaboration. Embracing new ideas, investing in research and development, and promoting education and awareness are essential steps toward creating a more dynamic and responsive industry.

“THE MOST FRUSTRATING THING TO DEAL WITH IS THE INERTIA IN ADOPTING MODERN TECHNOLOGIES AND PRACTICES”

www.psimagazine.co.uk PANEL 37

MATT JOHNSON - AMTHAL GROUP

One of the security provider’s clear objectives is to ensure support for site and building managers when it comes to handovers and ensuring peace of mind overall for premises.

We’re passionate about providing seamless security solutions, but if there’s one aspect of the industry that’s a pet hate, it’s the challenge of managing access codes.

This frustration is particularly evident during security takeovers, where the access code is either unknown or given to the wrong person to manage and transfer. It can all lead to delays, increased costs, and unnecessary resource allocation.

Access codes play a crucial role in maintaining security integrity, but the complexity arises when there are different levels of access— management, engineering, and general. Miscommunication, loss or mishandling of these codes can cause significant disruptions in the transition process.

To address this issue and improve

efficiency in security takeovers, we believe in implementing clearer protocols, handovers and communication channels. Where the information is recorded clearly and compliantly to ensure a smooth transition.

There needs to be a robust system in place for assigning and verifying access codes, ensuring that the right information is provided to the appropriate individuals. This might involve streamlining the process, centralising access code management, and providing comprehensive training to all stakeholders involved.

Leveraging technology can greatly enhance accessibility and accountability. Implementing secure digital platforms or mobile applications for access code management can reduce human error and facilitate real-time updates and tracking. By embracing innovation and automation, we can minimise the likelihood of access code-related setbacks and streamline the entire takeover process.

JAMIE BARNFIELD - IDIS EUROPE

It annoys me every time I see end users who’ve been mis-sold systems and left struggling with poor quality video. Either their system has become unusable, or clearly it never worked properly in the first place. Poor system life and TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is wasteful and compromises security.

But it surprising how often customers just accept disappointing results as normal – they don’t realise that they should be getting sharp picture quality, easy live viewing and search functions, and totally reliable storage. And of course, when you have a system like that, you can be stuck with it for years.

Honest mistakes can occur and there can be unexpected snags on any job, but if that happens reputable suppliers will work to put it right. Sadly, it’s a fact of life that not all traders have that attitude. Either they don’t fully understand how the kit they are using works, they don’t know or care about its limitations, or they just want to cut corners.

But sometimes positives come out of this. In Bristol, for example we were recently brought in to support our integration partner KIS Fire & Security upgrading a major city centre

surveillance system where the previous installer from some years back had gone out of business – camera quality was poor, and they system was becoming unusable. Underground equipment and cabling had been badly installed, with ducting that was collapsing and kept flooding. KIS worked methodically over several months and put everything right. Each time we are involved in an upgrade project or system migration like this, it’s nice to see how pleasantly surprised the customer is.

So, for our industry the solution to my pet hate is to keep communicating with customers and getting the TCO message out there – we can make a positive difference.

In prioritising transparency, efficiency, and technological advancements, we can overcome the challenges associated with access codes in security takeovers and deliver smoother, more reliable security solutions for our clients, new and existing.

Let’s work together to educate end users and create a future where security transitions are seamless and stress-free for all involved.

CARL MEASON –FENIX MONITORING

My pet hate is seeing those who decide to make money at the detriment to others or the industry they profess to care about, “talking the talk and not walking the walk”.

I guess this is the same in every industry and don’t get me wrong, I am not noting the taking of decisions that are in the best interests of their businesses - these sometimes may upset others - I am calling out the hypocrisy of making decisions that work against industry standards and their professed integrities.

Of course, we all win and lose but let’s not kid ourselves, if you’re going to “talk it, walk it.”

COUNCIL USES CAMERAS TO HELP KEEP ROAD USERS SAFE

BRANDYS NAD Labem-Stará Boleslav in Czechia is a pair of towns spread over both banks of the Elbe River in the Prague-East District. The City Council is passionate about improving the quality of life of its citizens, and safety is a big part of that.

In 2006, construction began on the municipal camera surveillance system (MKDS). There are multiple camera points across the city, including Komenského Square, the bus station, the town hall, and the Garden ice rinks. As part of the wider public safety agenda, the City Council wanted to install ANPR cameras to better understand the flow of vehicles entering and exiting specific areas of the city to inform traffic management. This data can also be used in spatial planning.

With its AI-powered Road AI and RoadWatch functions, the city turned to Hanwha Vision to provide ten PNOA9081RLP and ten XNO-6123R/RW cameras, alongside an SSM recording server, decoders, the TID-600 intercom and more. It was a new installation that needed to provide control room staff and frontline police officers with footage of vehicle makes, models, colours and licence plates. The Police of the Czech Republic and crisis management authorities also have access to the system as part of their close cooperation with the city.

The PNO-A9081RLP offers Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav an all-in-one solution featuring ANPR, Make/Model/ Colour Recognition (MMCR) and vehicle classification analytics – all pre-installed, ready to use and licensed. This made deploying the cameras easy so the city could get up and running quickly with its traffic surveillance. The cameras cover one lane of traffic at speeds up to 70km/h.

With eyewitness accounts quite often being inaccurate or incomplete, and particularly so with regards to vehicle licence number plates, the ability to search

for vehicles by make, model and colour is of great help to investigating teams when looking to find footage of a vehicle involved in an incident. Similarly, with criminals frequently swapping the licence number plates on vehicles in order to avoid ANPR identifying them as stolen, police can use the make, model and colour search criteria to cross-reference against reports of stolen vehicles.

Since the launch of the system, several stolen vehicles and criminals have been detected. Vehicles are also classified into seven vehicle types (car, SUV, van, LCV, truck, bus or motorcycle), allowing operators to provide quicker responses to traffic incidents or reports of dangerous driving. Moreover, operators can gain longterm insights into road and parking usage, with planners able to take any trends into account when considering widening roads or creating new bus and cycle lanes.

Meanwhile, the XNO-6123R/RW cameras come pre-installed with RoadWatch ANPR, which gives an all-in-one ANPR and direction detection solution. It can cover one lane of traffic travelling up to 90 km/h and 30m IR (infrared).

Eventually, the plan is to connect the outputs from the two camera models to police databases to further improve incident response times and aid investigations. Currently, the city police can see what’s happening on a video wall or with remote footage on their phones and tablets.

Since the traffic solutions were installed, the city police have used the footage for forensic investigations into crimes committed. The CCTV system is also a visible deterrent for dangerous drivers and other traffic violations.

SINCE THE TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS WERE INSTALLED, THE CITY POLICE HAVE USED THE FOOTAGE FOR FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS INTO CRIMES COMMITTED

ENHANCING

PUBLIC SAFETY AT BATTERSEA POWER STATION

HEALD HAS installed and secured a number of spaces within the bustling area of Battersea Power Station, Central London. Over recent years, the area has become home to a community of homes, shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, offices and over 19 acres of public space.

As vehicle-borne incidents remain a potential threat to bustling highfootfall public locations, the decision to implement adequate levels of public safety in the central space was chosen due to the area being a potential security target.

The customer had specific requirements regarding foundation depth and the challenge of fitting on a gradient. Heald provided one HT3 Electro-Mechanical Matador 4 and two Fixed Matador 2’s to secure the public spaces.

Debbie Heald MBE, managing director and co-owner at Heald, comments:

“As more areas in Central London develop into busy high footfall spaces, it’s important to consider how a change in public environment and an increase in footfall will pose potential safety risks.

“Not only is Battersea Power Station an iconic location in London, but soon, it will be one of London’s largest office, retail, leisure and cultural quarters. With a 42-acre site, and a 24/7 community hosting over 250 shops, considering the potential security implications this may attract is essential.”

CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT FOR THEATRE ON THE CORNISH CLIFFS

THE MINACK Theatre, perched atop Cornish cliffs, is a challenging and dramatic environment for facilities teams to handle in terms of security and access control. A suited masterkey system based on the ABUS Zolit cylinder has made life simpler and improved security for the Minack team who now have a single masterkey to cover the whole site from outbuildings and concession stalls to the main public and staff entrances.

The Minack Theatre is an open-air theatre, balanced on the cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean in Porthcurno in Cornwall. The site itself covers not just the stage and seating areas but a number of cafes, food and souvenir concessions,

storage and staff buildings meaning that maintaining security and access control proved to be a headache for the facilities team who were carrying multiple keys from legacy lock installations over the years.

Jeb Supplies installed a single masterkeyed system across the whole site including padlocks for gates and outbuildings as well as the main customer-facing areas. Zolit 1000 is a secure and versatile cylinder bespoke cylinder system that offers a perfect all-in-one solution for large master key projects like Minack Theatre.

The ABUS masterkey system installed by Jeb Supplies includes Submariner 83WPIB/53 Padlocks

which feature features a ball-bearing locking mechanism, providing a marked advantage over traditional spring-loaded systems in terms of weather resilience.

PHARMACY USES DIGITAL PINS TO REPLACE KEYS

HANDING OUT out and tracking keys can be laborious and time-consuming because mechanical locking requires keyholder(s) to be present, staff absences or vacations cause a problem — including unnecessary waiting around for an important door to be opened. A simple, familiar solution is offered when businesses make a simple switch to digital PIN locking.

“We had a door with a classic lock and key,” explains Tom Smeets, owner of family-run Smeets Pharmacy in Lint, near Antwerp. “But seven of us were working here, it was really complicated.”

Tom sought a digital approach to access that was an efficient replacement for mechanical lock-and-key security. The aim was to provide his pharmacy staff

with more convenient door security. The solution had to be easy to operate as a small business like Smeets Pharmacy does not employ a security manager or access control specialist.

To replace the existing lock, Tom Smeets selected Assa Abloy’s Code Handle Door Lock. This device looks and works just like any other door handle but incorporates digital PIN security inside. Doors equipped with Code Handle unlock with up to nine different 4- to 6-digit PINs; all staff have their own. Anyone’s PIN can be cancelled or changed anytime.

The device fits onto an existing standard locking cylinder and is fixed in place with two screws. There’s no wiring and no software. Power comes from long-lasting standard batteries. For

users, a Code Handle is convenient as they just push the buttons to enter their PIN and work the handle as normal. It’s all familiar, but with no need for anyone to carry keys, keycards or any other credential.

It doesn’t matter if a keyholder is on leave, sick or just late. Everyone gets in as soon as they need by inputting their personalised PIN.

ANALYTICS AND MONITORING AID YVES ROCHER WITH EXPANSION

IDIS HAS partnered with French cosmetic and beauty brand Yves Rocher to help them expand their network of stores in shopping malls, tourist hotspots, and prime retail locations.

The company needed a video solution to reduce shrinkage, improve customer service, drive sales, and improve staff performance.

This was challenging though, because an array of existing analogue and IP cameras was in place, as well as an inflexible VMS. Cameras were obtrusive and did not provide comprehensive coverage in HD quality.

The system had no analytics functionality, so a labour-intensive people counting solution was being used which was driving up operating costs. IDIS,

together with Secom Türkiye, replaced the existing mix-and-match system with an NDAA-compliant 5MP IR fisheye camera (DC-Y6516WRX-A), managed and controlled via cost-free IDIS Center in the stores, and IDIS Solution Suite (ISS) Expert VMS at Yves Rocher’s head office. Footage is recorded locally on a 4-channel IDIS DR2504P NDAA-compliant NVR. The singlecamera solution simplifies and streamlines system operation for retail staff and ensures HD coverage of the whole store, without blind spots.

Each store is equipped with a compact IDIS AI Box for Retail (DV-1304), to deliver a range of analytics functions including people counting, queue monitoring, heat mapping and occupancy monitoring. People counting data from all the stores

is transmitted to the ISS server, then collected in Yves Rocher’s SQL server for sharing with the NEBiM retail ERP solution. This enables Yves Rocher to analyse sales turnover and visitor numbers, comparing sales campaign periods against regular periods, allowing an accurate evaluation of marketing.

SECURITY TRENDS UNCOVERED

HID recently announced its 2024 State of the Security Industry Report, which gathered responses from 2,600 partners, end users, and security and IT personnel worldwide, across a range of job titles and organisation sizes representing over eleven industries

THE 2024 State of Security Report delves into the underlying concerns driving upcoming innovations and the technologies that underpin them, helping security leaders to be proactive in adapting to evolving challenges. Conducted in the autumn of 2023, this year’s survey reveals six themes, as follows:

MOBILE IDENTITY

Given the widespread use of mobile devices, momentum continues to build around their use in support of identity. Within the next five years, surveyed end users state that nearly 80% of organisations will deploy mobile IDs. Industry partners are even more optimistic in their outlook, stating that 94% of their customers will have deployed mobile IDs.

MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

More than 83% of end users respondents said their organisation currently uses Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), mainly due to the vulnerabilities of passwords. For many, this represents the first step on the longer journey toward Zero Trust, an approach to security that

calls for organisations to maintain strict access controls and to never trust, always verify anyone – internal or external – by default. Zero Trust has been implemented in 16% of organisations with over 100,000 employees and 14% in those with up to 10,000 employees, says the survey.

With MFA being widespread, the eventual end of passwords is imminent. The creation of new standards such as FIDO (Fast Identity Online), will pave the path to new and more secure authentication options that will be part of a more robust Zero Trust architecture.

SUSTAINABILITY

Among the survey respondents, sustainability continues to rank high as a business priority, with both end users and partners rating its importance at a “4” on a 1-to-5 scale. Additionally, 74% of end users indicate the importance of sustainability has grown over the past year, and 80% of partners reported the trend growing in importance among their customers.

A shift to cloud-based solutions and increased use of mobile are two clear strategies to reach sustainability goals.

“IN THIS YEAR’S SURVEY, 39% OF INSTALLERS SAID THEIR CUSTOMERS ARE USING FINGERPRINT OR PALM PRINT, AND 30% SAID THEY’RE USING FACIAL RECOGNITION”

BIOMETRICS

In this year’s survey, 39% of installers and integrators said their customers are using fingerprint or palm print, and 30% said they’re using facial recognition. The momentum continues to build as 8% plan to test or implement some form of biometrics in the next year and 12% plan to do so in the next three to five years.

THE CLOUD

Nearly half of end users are moving to cloud-based identity management, with 24% already using it and another 24% in the process of implementing such systems. Industry partners say their customers face several hurdles here, including existing reliance on legacy/onprem equipment (28%), lack of budget (24%), and cloud-based identities simply not being a business priority (21%).

AI AND ANALYTICS

Many security professionals see AI’s analytic capabilities as the low-hanging fruit to enhance identity management. Rather than looking to AI to inform the entirety of the security system, it’s possible to leverage data analytics as a way to operationalise AI in support of immediate outcomes. 35% of end users reported they’ll be testing/implementing AI capability in the next three to five years, with 15% using AI-enabled biometrics.
