This month, EU lawmakers approved a draft of the AI act, taking us one step closer toward the enactment of the first set of AI regulations. While the draft legislation is still subject to change, some rules are expected to make strides in improving the protection of individuals’ identities particularly in defence from the threat of scammers and deepfake attacks.

The security industry has fully embraced the benefits that AI can bring to improving the ability and efficiency of surveillance systems, especially in the search and monitoring side of CCTV. As per any other year, a walk around a trade show will give you immediate indication of the ‘current thing’ and in 2023, and also the last few years since Covid, it has been AI that has been the thrust of marketing and R&D for tech developers.

Later on in this edition we look at the need for a steady hand on the tiller controlling the direction of the AI ship as we head to uncharted waters and the need for rules and regulations to be set out right from the start of the journey.

There are a number of concerns within the industry. For example, Mark Rodseth, VP of Technology, EMEA at digital consultancy CI&T said: “An international regulator for AI would have an immense challenge on its hands - due to the speed of AI advancement and the need for the policy to be future-proofed, internationally applicable and practically enforceable.

“The development of AI is different to other forms of tech because it is a black box and can also develop without human intervention. The combination of not knowing what’s really going on in these models, and its ability to teach itself, means we can’t fully predict how this technology will evolve and the consequences of each evolutionary step.

“We must keep things in perspective, though. Any decisions which have a major environmental, societal, economic and political impact will continue, for the foreseeable future, to be made by humans due to the political systems in place. The greater risk here is who is making those decisions, and what machine learning systems are providing them with data and insights. Machine learning models can be prone to misinformation and bias depending on the data they are trained on and how the model is trained. Regulation and transparency will always be key to ensuring this technology is benign and operated in the right way.”

While the human element of technology-reliant sectors is often the weakest link, the introduction of AI needs a human foot on the brake to keep it from speeding out of control.

Vipond Fire Protection merges with Chubb Fire and Security

Chubb has announced the integration of ownership and operational responsibilities of Vipond Fire Protection to Chubb Fire and Security in the UK.

Like Chubb, Vipond is part of the APi Group, and this merger enhances Chubb’s capabilities in fire protection, detection, and suppression.

“We are thrilled to announce the successful integration of Vipond Fire Protection to Chubb,” said David Dunnagan,

Managing Director of Chubb Fire and Security.

“With Vipond now part of our organisation, we have elevated our fire suppression capabilities and have LPCB LPS:1048 Level 4 sprinkler installer.”

While Vipond was already part of the APi Group, which bought Chubb Fire and Security in 2022, its operations in the UK had not previously been integrated. The two companies will continue to present to the market as two separate brands.

Skills for Security announces Ajax Systems as its latest sponsor Skills for Security, the provider of fire and security apprenticeships, recently announced a sponsorship scheme to encourage brands to invest in the next generation of talent. Ajax Systems is the latest business to offer its support and become a Partner. Evolution opens new Belfast office to support NI clients

Evolution has opened a new office in Belfast to service increasing new business opportunities

and clients throughout Northern Ireland.

New dates and conference for IFSEC in 2024

The four co-located events; Facilities Show, Firex, IFSEC and Safety & Health Expo will next take place on 2nd – 4th December, 2024 at Excel London and will run alongside the Security & Fire Excellence Awards which will take place on the 2nd December 2024 at the JW Marriot Grosvenor in Park Lane, London.

Announcing the new dates, Chris Edwards, Group Director, Informa Markets stated: “We’re extremely excited about the opportunities the December 2024 dates will unlock with colocated industry events, such as the Security &

Fire Awards in Park Lane now 30 minutes away on the new Elizabeth line.

Gateshead firm completes Scottish project

Advantex has provided an IP based CCTV system to a Scottish electronics manufacturer.

The project saw the Follingsby Park-based firm install and commission a Milestone IP surveillance system along with a number of high-resolution Axis IP cameras at Plexus in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. This has been designed to provide site-wide perimeter surveillance capabilities together with improved safety and security for the 50-strong workforce.

A key feature of the five-figure contract was installed using NVT Phybridge PoE over coax hardware allowing for the use of existing coaxial infrastructure. This has been reported to have provided cost and time saving benefits while minimising disruption to operations during installation at the site.

By using PoE over coax technology, Plexus avoided the need for IP network cabling and additional networking closets, which could have threatened the project with higher costs, complexity, and business disruption. It also minimised the disruption to operations during installation at the Kelso site and contributed towards the company’s environmental sustainability and carbon reduction goals.

New controller for alarm and smart automation

The RisControl Controller for Alarm and Smart Automation from RISCO is designed so installers can easily integrate it with their customers’ existing Z-Wave automation devices, irrespective of brand. Three technologies in one flexible reader

2N has launched the 2N Access Unit 2.0 reader, which supports three access technologies – multi-frequency RFID cards, PIN via a touch keypad, and Bluetooth-based smartphone credentials – simultaneously. This offers the flexibility to provide different access control options for different users, depending on their needs or preferences.

For example, for entry into (and through) an office building, some employees may prefer fast, convenient access via their smartphone, whereas others may be more comfortable carrying an RFID card. PIN codes are likely to be the best option for occasional visitors such as cleaning staff. The unit can also allow for two-factor authentication – perhaps smartphone credentials followed by a PIN code – for buildings that require more security.

In residential buildings, the same flexibility is required: younger people often prefer mobile access – but with a PIN code as a backup. Elderly residents, on the other hand, sometimes favour a RFID card or PIN. The Unit 2.0 combines multiple devices and modules making installation straightforward and also streamlines the management of the site’s access control devices.

Ruijie – Reyee devices

The Ruijie support site includes links to a wide range of short explanatory videos along with some full training sessions online at video.ruijienetworks.com/.

Standard networking terminology is used throughout, so users with reasonable networking skills should have no difficulty in installing and setting up a system. For most CCTV and similar security systems, larger switches such as the RG-EG210GP 10 Port (8 + 2) or the RG-EG226GC-P 26 port (24 + 2 SPF) will likely be required. The latter supports 24 PoE ports with a total PoE capability of 370W.

The three Ruijie Reyee devices reviewed here are part of a range of network products that have previously had little exposure in the UK. Now available through Dynamic CCTV, the range extends from these compact devices to enterprise models. Cloudbased management ensures easy setup and secure access. The Reyee sub-brand is intended to provide a suitable range of Routers, Switches and Wireless devices for small-system integrators and is a useful introduction to the full offering.

The RG-EG105G-P Router has a WAN port for internet connection via a suitable modem, and four PoE enabled LAN ports.

The RG-ES206GC-P Managed Network Switch has four PoE enabled ports and two uplink ports.

The RG-RAP2200(E) Access Point is PoE driven but optionally can be supplied from 12v DC. It has an additional LAN port.

Getting started

The simplest way to set up the devices is with the Ruijie app. This can be downloaded from the Android or iOS store and is used to configure and manage Ruijie devices. When first run it is necessary to set up an account on the free Ruijie Cloud service, and this is a simple process that can be entered for a company, a freelancer, or a user to suit.

Once the devices are powered up and connected, the app can be used to ‘Add a Project’ with a unique name and management password, and the devices can then be added. Adding devices is equally simple with either direct entry, discovery, or via the QR code on the device label.

Menu options

The browser Cloud app is well laid out and provides a left-hand side command tree consisting of:

Overview: Dashboard, Topology and Alarm displays.

Report: Network and Voucher

Device: AP, AC, Switch, Gateway, Home Router, Bridge.

Terminal: Cameras, NVR, IP Phone.

Client: Wi-Fi clients, Clients.

The device details show an overview or configuration layout with the status of the unit and associated Device and Configuration logs. The mobile app provides a convenient way to access all of the features though with limited topology view for more complex systems. Key device features can be viewed at a glance and an eWeb function allows connection into any device.

Where multiple access points are used, the wireless coverage can be optimised to manage power and balance user bandwidth. Mesh operation can be configured if required.

Device firmware upgrades are notified through the Cloud system and can be installed remotely.

The Voucher option is for reporting on use of tokens for temporary wireless users if used for customer access. A custom portal can be created for such users.

The Topology section can be used to produce a report of the currently selected network. This can be output as a Microsoft Word or Adobe pdf format document. It consists of an easily customisable front page followed by the contents of Basic Info, Configuration, Device List, and Topology. The detail pages include suitable diagrams to support the system connections. Appropriate Heading Styles are

The RG-EG105G-P router has a bandwidth of up to 600Mb/s, or 500Mb/s if flow control is used. This then allows Failover or Load Balancing to be implemented. The PoE ports can supply up to 54W in total with a maximum of 30W on a single port.

The DHCP pool is enabled by default.

Up to 100 clients are supported and the router can control up to 32 devices (such as APs) and 128 switches.

Configuration allows for per-port VLANs, Smart flow control, Real-time traffic audits, Customisable portal page, Application blocking’ and firmware upgrade per device or batch.

Port management allows, Port Mirroring, Loop Protection, Isolation, Limiting, Storm Control, Static MAC, and MAC searching.

Status display shows: Port statistics, Monitoring information, Cable detection, VLAN configuration, MAC lists.

Its dimensions are 206.5(w) x 108.5(d) x 28(h) mm with a weight of 0.84kg.

The RG-ES206GC-P switch has four PoE ports and two uplink ports. All are up to 1Gb/s capacity, with a total switching capacity of 12Gb/s. The PoE ports provide up to 54W total and include an extended PoE mode of up to 250 metres.

The layer 2 switch can be WEB, Cloud or App managed and also supports per-port VLAN

configuration for port isolation. Configurable ACL (Access Control Lists) can be used to restrict access.

IP camera and NVR recognition are supported for compatible devices.

Its dimensions are 148(w) x 78(d) x 26(h) mm with a weight of 0.79kg.

The RG-RAP2200(E) is PoE powered but includes an additional network point for potential connection to another network device or switch.

The AP handles up to 400Mb/s in the 2.4GHz band and up to 867Mb/s in the 5GHz band, giving a total figure of 1.267Gb/s per access point.

The wireless SSID can be found with the identification @Ruijie-m1234 where the last four digits are the same as the last four of the master unit connection’s MAC address.

Its dimensions are 194(w) x 194(h) x 35(d) mm excluding the mounting plate. with a weight of 0.79kg.

Conclusion

This is an impressive range of cloud-managed network products that can be used to build well documented secure networks for security or office systems. Ease of remote access and system management simplifies long term support.

One downside to the system is that the door station during testing found it difficult to sustain a magnetic lock or any lock requiring continuous power. Applications for power applied locking devices work fine, but for heavy duty locks or magnetic style locks, and additional PSU was required. The system is code based and very user friendly, but the option for RFID or Proximity reader technology integrated into the system would provide additional benefit and functionality for the end user.

Conclusion

And just like that, AI became the hottest innovation in the security sector (as well as in many others), but are we quite ready for a complete roll-out? Here we look at the need for regulation and restriction in these early stages of the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence-based technology

The UK Government is contemplating regulating the use of AI technology in our workplaces, amongst growing concerns that these new technologies could negatively impact the UK’s job market and employment levels.

According to the gov.uk website the UK is home to one-third of all Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies in Europe, so the pros and cons of AI technologies in the workplace are already being heavily weighed up on these shores, with the undeniable benefits it brings to a variety of industries being valued against the potential wider impacts on job security and the wider economy.

police. AI technology also has the potential to improve the quality of transport networks, as well as provide previously unattainable data to professionals in various fields of science and technology.

Michelle Donelan MP, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology has openly expressed her vision for the UK to become an AI-enabled country, with AI being listed as one of the UK’s “top 5 technologies of tomorrow”.

The NHS has already outlined how AI technologies could improve the way it operates. One such way is in its application of medicine in areas such as cancer treatments, eye diseases and a range of other conditions. AI systems could also be used to speed up care professionals’ decision-making, helping more patients receive diagnoses and treatments much faster.

Similarly, AI systems could save the police invaluable amounts of time by automatically capturing any required data, minimising the hours that officers dedicate to filling out paperwork, thus freeing up more officers for more on-the-ground police work.

PRO: Make the UK a leading power in technology

The UK has been very much at the forefront of progressing AI technologies and currently places third in the world for AI research and development.

As AI becomes an increasingly important part of the global way of life, the UK has an opportunity to become a leading power in the technology sector, which could eventually boost the UK’s position in the global economy.

While there is certainly something of a race to become a leading AI superpower, the UK government admits that it is crucial to create the right environment in which to harness the benefits of AI, so that innovators can thrive and the risks can be addressed.

PRO: Creating new jobs

A lot of people are quite rightly concerned about AI technology replacing real people in jobs throughout different sectors. However, while AI might reduce the number of certain jobs out there, it is entirely possible that new jobs will be created as a result of these technologies, for example, AI regulators.

While the abilities of AI and the global use of it are accelerating, these technologies are still finding a place in the working world, it is

currently hard to estimate the exact number of different job roles that AI will create and how many of them there will be.

CON: Limiting job availability

The main concern that most people have with the rise of AI technology is that if these systems become too efficient, then companies could start to replace a human workforce with AI, which could lead to nationwide unemployment.

The UK Government has been aware of this risk since at least 2020 when a detailed report by PwC for the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy was published. The report estimated that 7% of UK jobs could face a high probability of automation by 2025, rising to around 18% by 2030, and as high as 30% by 2040, should AI technologies continue to be rolled out at the expected rate.

CON: Personal accountability

Another drawback of AI systems becoming more prevalent which is often pointed out is that as AI algorithms begin to replace human thinking, the people responsible for making important decisions across a variety of industries become less accountable for any mistakes that may occur.

This has the potential to create a real headache for HR since a fault within an AI system cannot be held accountable for any mistakes or discrepancies, in the same way, that a human employee can.

This could prove particularly tricky if a person feels they have been discriminated against in some way as a result of AI. There is already evidence that some AI tools have been developed to be deliberately unethical or biased in some way.

Without mandated rules on AI, these AI systems could end up infringing on people’s human rights.

CON: Posing unknown threats

There have been plenty of sci-fi movies depicting artificial intelligence getting out of control and posing a serious threat to humanity. While a lot of these fantasy tales are certainly far-fetched, it remains true that the limits to what AI can achieve and what it may be used for, are still relatively unknown.

In the wrong hands, or in an uncontrolled environment, AI could develop in such a way that people’s data and privacy are very much at risk.

Michelle Donelan MP, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology has openly expressed her vision for the UK to become an AI-enabled country, with AI being listed as one of the UK’s “top 5 technologies of tomorrow”

Is it time to regulate AI in the UK?

The rapid rise of AI technologies in UK workplaces has happened too fast for anybody to make a fully formed decision about its potential limits and total impact. For this reason alone, the calls for stricter regulation of AI are becoming increasingly harder to ignore.

The EU started the conversation on AI regulation, with a Proposal for a Regulation laying down harmonised rules on AI intelligence and the AI Act proposal. These proposals aim to address the risks associated with AI, with the intention of guaranteeing that any AI technologies implemented within Europe can be completely trusted by the people that are using them.

Since then there have been plenty of highprofile figures advocating for the regulation of AI, including Tesla and Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, as well as philosophers from prolific universities such as Oxford University.

AI regulation does not have to mean the total restriction of AI technology within UK workplaces, and a variety of industries can still benefit from AI systems that have been approved as safe to use.

Ultimately regulating AI sooner rather than later will ensure that AI will have a positive rather than negative effect on people’s work lives.

With the EU Parliament passing its draft of the EU AI Act in mid-June, Tony Porter, Chief Privacy Officer, Corsight & Former Surveillance Camera

Commissioner for England and Wales said: “The vote in the EU Parliament effectively amounts to a blanket ban on the use of facial recognition technology in public places. That puts it at odds with the smarter and more nuanced position of the European Commission, which seeks to regulate the development and use of the technology by putting effective guardrails around it.

“AI and facial recognition technology requires clear legislation and mandatory restrictions that govern its responsible, ethical and proportionate use. Yet to ban it in all circumstances is to protect known criminals and to endanger innocent civilians. There is clear public for the controlled use of facial recognition technology to tackle serious crime, save lives and make our communities safer.

“As we now enter trilogue discussions between the EU Commission, Parliament and Council, I hope we’ll see a recognition that the way forward is to apply the appropriate safeguards. Talk of bans is easy, but regulation is the responsible approach.”

Certainly, these are early days for the implementation of AI in our daily lives and the rapid growth in the use of online AI services such as ChatGPT and others shows that at the moment there is a huge appetite for what the technology can do for the user. Yet there are concerns about the speed in which AI is being adopted and many experts are pointing where there should be restrictions and regulations to offer protection and ensure its ethical use in the future.

Bus – Are you onboard yet?

Do you want to reduce your costs and speed up alarm installs? There is an alternative wiring method that isn’t going down the wireless route. Here we find out more about Bus

Bus is a simplified wiring architecture that uses a single 4-core alarm cable to wire an alarm system. The Bus solution which wires the detectors in a line, in addition to or instead of a star pattern, is well suited to long corridors, and is therefore compatible with the commercial sector. Bus installations can therefore reduce total cable lengths, labour costs, physical zone expanders and on-site maintenance.

We spoke to Mark Earp, Technical and Training Manager at RISCO, about the technology and why installers should look at an alternative to the conventional way of wiring:

What is a Bus system?

A Bus system is essentially a proprietary protocol developed to work on a single cable connection. What that means is that all Buscapable devices can be connected in the system with one single cable allowing system testing and diagnostics to be carried out both locally and remotely. Due to the way it utilises a single cable there is much more flexibility when it comes to connectivity and wiring design. For example, we can wire the system “loop in, loop out” or “daisy-chaining”, but it also means we have the flexibility of spurring-off a cable

allowing you to just tap into it anywhere, plus of course you can star off it. The easiest way to think of a Bus system is that it is one system with one cable connecting all the devices.

So what is the difference between a Bus system and a conventional wired system? With conventional systems you need many cables, for instance, you’ll need a single cable going through to a keypad, a separate cable for your sounder and you’ll need multiple cables going from the panel to each of your security devices including PIRs, contacts etc. With a Bus system, you run one cable from the panel and take it wherever you like, such as to the keypad and then the other devices/detectors. You can loop in and loop out and then at the end, go to the sounder and connect it up.

That’s fine for new systems, but what about existing systems?

It is not a problem - a Bus system can be adopted into an existing installation. It will

probably need a few tweaks, most usually to the control panel, which will need to be Busenabled, and then that allows the panel to talk to Bus devices. All the devices also need to be Bus-enabled of course, but once your panel is changed first, you can then change settings on the keypad. Once this has been carried out there are no more changes to make as the existing cables can be adapted to use Bus capabilities. There is no new wiring required to make an existing system a full Bus system.

Are all the Bus protocols the same in the security sector?

The protocols are different with each manufacturer so you can’t mix and match different Bus devices from different vendors. If you install RISCO technology for example, then you must use our Bus system.

What’s in it for the installer? Why should they fit Bus systems?

There are a few reasons why Bus should be the installer’s preference, but I think the biggest benefit is the savings that can be made when fitting a Bus system. With the normal, conventional wiring of alarm systems there many cables, plus you might need to cost for extra kit like expanders. With a Bus system, you can reduce the labour costs and reduce the costs of cable because you don’t need as much wiring, and you can reduce the cost of expanders. All of this will save the installer time and money on their contracts, which of course, means that they can be much more competitive with quotations. Furthermore, the time savings mean that more jobs can be fulfilled in any period.

Another huge advantage of using the Bus system is realised when you need to add new devices to the installation. To add more detectors or peripherals you just go to any point on that cable run, tap into it, spur off it and then just add your additional equipment. There is no need to run a new cable from where you want this new detector or peripheral all the way back to the control panel. You just find the nearest cable on the Bus run, tap into it and you can connect straight away.

What about wireless? Does that not offer the same benefits?

Wireless has evolved massively over the years and many wireless installs are specified mainly because of the simplicity - the speed of install, less intrusive, disruptive etc. However, people need to keep in mind that the success of a

wireless installation is dependent upon the environment otherwise it can lead to problems. Running a single cable for Bus is not quite as quick a process but is not prone to the same issues that can arise with a wireless system and is still much quicker than conventional wired security.

If I’m an installer and I’ve not yet gone down the Bus route, what are the top tips? I think it’s the same for the adoption of any new technology, make sure you understand the system as much as you can before you start doing anything. Obviously, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, but be sure to get some training from a good manufacturer first for a basic understanding. As an engineer, there’s nothing worse than going onto a site with something new because not only does it take you longer to understand it, but in front of the customer, it can make you look incompetent if you struggle.

When people come to you for training, are they surprised how easy Bus is to work with?

Very much so. We’ve had installers come back to us after the initial training and then started fitting Bus systems, saying that they cannot believe that they did not know about the technology before and how much time and money it has saved them on installations sinceand then how much profit they can make!

This is a key driver for us, which is why we carry out the training at any location that suits the installer: at our offices, at a branch of ADI Global Distribution, at their office or even onsite.

I think the hardest thing for some installers to cope with is change. There are a lot of engineers out there who are happy fitting the technology that they know; they have fewer issues with the kit and they can install it quickly. If they were to look at something new to them like a Bus system, although it might take a little longer to get used to the technology, as time progresses their time on install and additional works will get quicker and quicker and because of this their profits can start to increase as well especially for bigger jobs like commercials because you are saving on cabling and labour. This is why, as a company, we specifically promote Bus to installers, because of the benefits it can bring them.

We want to make the installers more profitable, and Bus will do this.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

What would make your job easier?

As not all my days are the same there isn’t a simple answer to this. We are consistently learning, improving and developing to ensure the process is as simple and easy for our customers. Our focus is to ensure the security system meets the requirements of the customer; introducing site surveys, regular meetings to discuss quotations and keeping in regular contact with the customers throughout the installation has made my job easier over the years to ensure a safe, secure and professional installation.

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product?

I have often thought of a fully AI-powered security system that seamlessly combines facial

Why does the security sector need more monitoring sof tware?

Ensuring escape compliance

Roy Buckingham, Regional Specification Development Manager at Abloy UK, discusses the importance of compliance with escape door systems, and how specifiers and installers can meet the required standards

The importance of emergency escape routes is often underestimated because emergencies and tragedies are only highlighted when they do not work. Failing to provide a compliant escape can have disastrous consequences, leading to substantial fines, custodial sentences, and the loss of life.

Security products and systems are usually installed to protect assets, but the most precious asset within a building is the lives of its occupants. It is critical that any access management solution on an escape door meets the standards BS EN 179 - Emergency Exit Devices, BS EN 1125 - Panic Exit Devices, and BS EN 13637 - Electrically Controlled Exit Systems.

So, with security and the need to escape in conflict in several situations, how can installers ensure they are meeting the requirements in terms of compliance while maintaining security when specifying an EDS?

Understanding BS EN 13637

By fitting a compliant EDS built to comply with standards, specifiers and installers fulfil their legal responsibilities and keep the occupants of a building safe in the event of an emergency.

BS EN 13637:2015 covers Electrically Controlled Exit Systems for use on Escape Routes, and comprises of three elements, tested together as a complete escape solution.

The standard covers the application of electrical controls to manage unauthorised use of escape doors, whether as part of an access control system or just to achieve exit management in situations such as retail stores, hospitals and schools and commercial premises.

This includes an electric controlling device, an initiating element (a resettable illuminated switch), and an electric blocking device to secure the door. The electric blocking device will be a

fail un-locked device that is specifically designed to work under a side load to ensure that escape is ensured, with the durability of the ability to release proven.

PSA 67 requires BS EN 13637 to be overlaid on top of a BS EN 179 or BS EN 1125 solution. BS EN 13637 provides a safe and compliant solution for applications but is never the standard procedure. BS EN 179 or BS EN 1125 are the default standards, and this applies across the whole of Europe.

EDS & ePED

Great care and consideration should always be taken with any BS EN 13637 application, as you are essentially blocking an escape door. Controversially the standard does not require the system to be interfaced with the building’s fire alarm system, but we should consider this the norm for most applications.

With BS EN 13637, the EDS will not be a traditional green break-glass door release. It is described in the standard as a resettable illuminated switch with a minimum diameter of 20mm.

This will be a fail un-locked device that works under side pressure to ensure occupants can always escape as required. In most cases, this device will provide secondary locking with the EDS overlayed on top of a BS EN 179 Emergency Escape device or BS EN 1125 Panic Escape device providing the primary locking.

Limitations to consider

BS EN 13637 does provide an electric lockonly application where the fail unlocked device provides for primary locking only - this configuration has limitations though.

This is because the fail unlocked arrangement will not provide for ‘Dynamic Lockdown’, meaning that security is compromised because the lock will fail unlocked both in the direction of escape and the direction of control, allowing re-entry after activation. Although this sometimes can be considered as an advantage, it is not a desirable feature for most applications.

With this in mind, the Escape Door System (EDS) offers easy access and egress while ensuring compliance, security and the ability to implement dynamic lockdown procedures, plus the electrically controlled Panic Exit Device (ePED). With the EDS, it is possible to provide a compliant solution for an escape door when read-in / read-out access control is specified, combining the three components required for BS EN 13637.

The EDS offers Blocking, with a fail-unlocked locking element that does not require any mechanical input to operate, and intelligent Control that allows connection to fire alarm systems or other building control systems to ensure escape in an emergency.

In addition, the Trigger unit incorporates a key-switch and a push button that tells the controller to release the locking mechanism to allow safe escape. To be a valid BS EN 13637 solution, these three components must be tested together to ensure compliance and safety. We understand the importance of being able to quickly restrict access in response to threats, which is why our EDS provides dynamic lockdown, allowing specific zones that may be at risk within a building to be cordoned off, while still allowing escape.

The EDS 1386 No Delay and the EDS 1386 T1 Delay provide the same security features; however, the T1 Delay delays exit for 15 seconds, preventing an escape in a very high-security situation.

The ePED display door terminal integrates a conventional escape door terminal in a single unit, while the ePED panic touch bar provides escape route technology directly on the door.

A customer’s tale of CCTV

When Hassan came to renew the 15-yearold video system at his convenience store in Birmingham, he had a clear idea of what he wanted. The only trouble was, none of the suppliers he contacted seemed interested in talking to him and, as he worked down the list of manufacturers to phone, not even in passing his details on to a friendly systems integrator.

“They were busy, and I’m only the owner of a small store I suppose,” he shrugs. “Why would big companies want to talk to me?” In fact, Hassan is well worth talking to.

He knows how to use a camera system to protect his family business from losses – he could probably teach the average security manager a thing or two - and he knows exactly what CCTV features are genuinely useful.

He’s also prepared to pay for a quality installation, because he sees his system as a long-term investment and a key business tool, definitely not a grudge purchase. He wants good value but doesn’t try to cut corners, and in this,

he’s probably typical of many business owners in the sector.

There are over 48,000 convenience stores in the UK, and recent estimates by the Association of Convenience Stores puts their combined annual spend on security at over £70m.

Yes, the contract value for a single store system upgrade will be much less than for a major chain. But the spend-per-store will probably be as high, if not higher, and it’s worth remembering that the owner-managers in the sector are typically well networked, and will share supplier recommendations.

So, to answer Hassan’s question, why would a big company want to talk to him? What’s the point in ever overlooking a customer who loves what you have to sell? And he does love it. For Hassan, CCTV is an essential tool for deterring crime: reducing losses, helping his staff to multi-task (watching the aisles while serving customers at the checkout for example), and keeping an eye on the business any time of day or night, while he’s away from the premises.

His observation skills have been honed by experience. He can often tell when a potential shoplifter comes in, from the way they make eye contact (or the way they avert their face) and by their body language.

Hassan and his people also know which items are most likely to be targeted, and they know when to be on the lookout for sleight of hand. Often thieves choose predictable spots to try to conceal goods. The store is designed so that customers must follow the aisles along a single flowline, and staff know where shoplifting attempts are most likely to occur: at the ends of aisles, at cutthroughs, and by certain product displays.

This familiarity allows them to track potentially suspicious movements, camera by camera, using their 34-camera system. But the system was at the end of its life, image quality wasn’t great, and latency was becoming a problem.

For the upgrade, Hassan says he wanted a replacement that retained the same ‘classic CCTV’ user experience as his trusted system –something intuitive and robust, with familiar keyboard controls.

That’s when he ran into trouble. His enquiries to a number of suppliers went unanswered, until after several weeks of research Cheshire-based systems integrator CL Security responded, partnering with IDIS to demonstrate a solution with the right user experience.

When they came to his store for a demonstration of the technology, Hassan was impressed with the image quality captured by the HD 5MP cameras with no latency. It was suggested that he could reduce costs by using 2MP cameras instead, without compromising quality, but he insisted that he wanted the higher resolution cameras. He also made a request for an additional customised feature: adding a new keyboard control option that would allow video to be played back at the press of a single button. The customisation was done, and the installation went ahead, with bullet cameras located externally and the dome cameras providing comprehensive coverage of the whole store interior, aisles, and checkout. Plug-and-play installation made the project efficient, so that normal trading did not have to be interrupted.

Hassan is delighted with the results, and says he is happy to recommend his new security suppliers to other independent store owners. His upgraded CCTV system is as easy to use as the classic analogue solution it replaced, but provides enhanced, higher-definition coverage. Hassan says he finds the easier search tools useful – and having a more accessible record of events is good – but above all, it’s efficient real-time monitoring tools that he values. And he uses the system’s mobile app to keep an eye on the store when he’s away – the app’s audio facility allows him to talk to colleagues via the spot monitor speaker, to alert them to anything that needs immediate attention.

And of course, IP CCTV continues to prove its value in protecting profits. Since the upgrade the level of attempted thefts and nuisance activity has fallen, and regular customers have commented favourably on the new system, noting the clear images shown on the HD spotmonitor at the checkout.

Review: A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings. When used with the Dahua Smart NVR, the camera supports intelligent search capabilities. Score: 8.5/10

Wisenet – PNM-C7083RVD

The PNM-C7083RVD multi-directional camera is a dual dome device that provides two 2MP views that can be individually set to suit locations while requiring only one network lead. Eaton – i-on10 KP

The i-on Compact Security System is a Grade 2 wired intrusion detection panel with 10 zones and up to 10 users and 4 keypads. It is promoted as being suitable for simple, entry-level burglar alarm systems to protect homes and small commercial installations.

Review: A straightforward and engineer friendly grade 2 wired alarm system with a wide range of configuration options and simplicity of installation. Good documentation is supplied with the product. Score: 9/10

CSL – MiniAir 2

MiniAir 2 is a single-path signalling solution that utilises a 4G/LTE-M path to signal an alarm from a protected premises to an ARC. It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails.

Review: The product overall is great. It is a perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment. Score: 9/10

Wisenet – TID-600R

The Wisenet TID-600R is a compact IP65, IK08 intercom unit featuring a 1/2.8” 2MP camera with a very wide viewing angle and infrared support up to 5 metres. It supports SIP 2.0 connection, has a touchless call option, edge storage and ONVIF compliance. It measures 165(h) x 49(w) x 48(d) cm with a weight of 490g.

Review: This is an impressive SIP 2.0 intercom unit that can be used in a wide range of situations especially in healthcare, where the touch-free method to initiate a call reduces infection risks. The HD camera and its event recording options can provide excellent evidential images. Score: 9/10

2N – IP Style

This video intercom features a 10”touch display boosted by the Axis ARTPEC-7 processor, full-HD camera and WaveKey technology. The unit is rated IP65 and IK08, meaning that users can touch the display even if there is any water on its surface.

Review: The unit is easily customisable depending on the project, with ability to customise each resident if used in a domestic setting, and importing business logos and grouping for businesses in a commercial setting – a very elegant solution and great addition to the outside of any building. Multi-site access control for Academy Trust

During expansion, the St Lawrence Academy school in North Lincolnshire required an access control system that would provide an extra level of security for pupils and staff, and could add new buildings and users to the system as the school grows.

Advanced IT Services was approached by St Lawrence Academy with the requirements, and they suggested the Paxton10 access control and video management system.

At the beginning of 2023, St Lawrence Academy investigated installing a new access control system at the school as they were establishing their own Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). The main requirements were to be able to access the system remotely, the ability to administrate multiple sites with varying groups of users, and that it has the potential to be integrated with other products and systems to maximise functionality.

The Paxton10 online user-interface allows administrators to access the system from any device with an internet connection, making

it easy to manage and monitor the security of a site. Paxton10 is scalable up to 100 sites on a single system with up to 1,000 doors, 1,000 cameras and 50,000 users.

Another benefit that Paxton10 has brought to St Lawrence Academy is the Multi-site feature. It will allow them to expand the system as more schools join the trust.

Advanced IT Services started with a fourdoor trial with Paxton10, before installing it across 30 doors with 166 managed users. The system successfully isolates the Trust offices on site from the main school buildings and manages pupil access, creating a secure area. In addition, if any pupil is late to class or absent, system administrators will get notifications and the pastoral teams can act quickly, making sure there’s no emergency and that pupils are safe.

Macaw Security Solutions has achieved a 40 percent increase in operational efficiency following the implementation of a BigChange job management system. The business can now optimise how its installation and maintenance engineers are deployed, with real-time tracking and intelligent scheduling, as well as reducing its reliance on paperwork. Engineers no longer have to physically check-in at the start and end of each working day, or as jobs are completed, and customer service levels are boosted with live updates and accurate ETAs.

Wireless fire safety for London development

K-Mesh, a wireless fire detection system and Taktis, by Kentec Electronics, have been installed in five residential tower blocks in Wapping to provide residents with a fire detection and alarm system.

The K-Mesh and Taktis system was installed at 21 Wapping Lane in central London by DPJ Fire and Security, a Kentec Installation Partner (KIP), after winning a tender put out by property developers, Ballymore.

The fire safety system protects five mixeduse housing residential complexes, including an 18-storey tower near St Katherine’s Dock. There are over 380 dwellings over an area of 7,500 square metres.

“We had used our previous system for many years but it just wasn’t keeping pace with our requirements. Every time we wanted something new, there was a cost, and we had to look elsewhere for simple add-ons such as vehicle tracking,” Dominic continued. “It was like the world had moved on and they hadn’t noticed!

Since implementing the BigChange job management system, which incorporates customer relationship management (CRM), job scheduling, live tracking, resource management, job finance and business intelligence, Macaw has improved the efficiency of its installation and maintenance engineers by between 35 and 40 percent which equates to an additional capacity of around 4,000 jobs a year. Integrated vehicle tracking and intelligent job scheduling allows the right resource to be allocated to each job taking into account location, existing workload, skill set and available stock.

Customisable job cards and an online library of equipment specifications and location histories is further boosting efficiency as engineers can access site specific information, using their mobile phones, when they need it. They can also provide detailed updates, including geocoded date and time stamped photographs, for back-office staff and management and for onward reporting to the client.

“BigChange supports and aligns with our vision to provide the highest standard of security by implementing effective solutions giving peace of mind via an individually tailored service,” Dominic concluded. “We know we have barely scratched the surface of what the system is capable of and we are looking forward to exploring additional functionality including the online booking portal and financial integration.”

A wireless solution was proposed because of the ease and speed that the installation could be carried out, offering less disruption to the occupants of the site, and because of its appealing aesthetics. The number of floors meant running cables was impractical and so the wireless solution avoided costly builders work and fire stopping; also important was K-Mesh’s SmartGuide technology, which supports safe and strategic building evacuation and means the fire detection system can be converted to an EVAC evacuation system as and when desired or practical.

Networked to K-Mesh, the system features five of Kentec’s 4-loop Taktis control panels, and more than 750 devices, including wireless heat sensors and sounders, and optical smoke detectors.
