SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

May 2024

Welcome to the May edition of Benchmark

Have you checked out how many AI conferences were featured at the Security Event in Birmingham? Many products showcased also have at least an element of AI.

At the March ASIS conference in Vienna, AI was not just a topic of discussion, but a force that permeated every aspect of our digital existence. For those at the forefront of security tech, understanding the lexicon of AI is not just important, but crucial. The landscape is evolving, and those who are fluent in its vernacular hold the power to shape the future.

The resounding message from ASIS was a call to action: “Do not merely observe AI, but actively engage with it. Let’s not be passive bystanders but proactive contributors in steering AI’s development for our mutual benefit.”

Some terms such as ‘object recognition,’ ‘behavioural analytics,’ and ‘predictive behaviour,’ we’ve for a while, without necessarily relating them to AI, but more machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and natural language processing (NLP).

However, there are new buzzwords that you need to incorporate in your vocabulary, such as: ‘Generative Adversarial Networks’ (GANs) - which

are a type of artificial intelligence framework composed of two neural networks, namely the generator and the discriminator, which are trained simultaneously through adversarial learning;

‘Human-in-the-loop AI’ - refers to a design approach in artificial intelligence systems where human intelligence and oversight are integrated into the loop of the system’s decision-making process, and ‘Ethics in AI’ refers to the ethical considerations and principles surrounding the development, deployment, and use of artificial intelligence systems. As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into various aspects of society, including healthcare, finance, criminal justice, and more, it’s essential to address the ethical implications of these systems. Key ethical concerns in AI include fairness, accountability, transparency, privacy, bias, safety, and societal impact.

Lastly, please remember to nominate before May 9th for the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2024. I urge you to seize this opportunity. Your vote can influence the course of innovation. Remember, every ballot matters, and your voice guides our path forward.

See you around!

Hanwha adds new dual-light capabilities to Q series AI cameras

Hanwha Vision, the global vision solution provider, is now offering dual-light capabilities, with White LED lights and infrared in its intelligent Q Series AI cameras, to deliver enhanced and cost-effective low-light performance – ideal for keeping a wide range of outside areas safe.

The dual-light QNE-C9013RL and QNEC8013RL cameras remove the need for external illumination sources. This reduces the costs of additional lighting, whilst avoiding light pollution from constant lighting as the cameras only use the white light when needed. The range is further complemented with a flat eye design for easy installation.

Securing museum collections using digital access control

Recent news of theft and misplacement of museum artefacts highlights the challenges of securing buildings and assets in the heritage sector and how access control can reduce these risks.

Lisa O’Flynn, Account Manager at Abloy UK, explains: “We are seeing an ongoing trend of museum artefacts becoming a target for crime. A report has revealed that more than 1,700 items are currently missing from museums in England.

“What’s more, an estimated 18.7% of all listed buildings are physically affected by crime annually, equating to over 70,000 listed buildings. Inferior key management

systems provide no record of who is accessing collections or buildings, creating a significant vulnerability in the sector.

“With invaluable artefacts at increasing risk of theft or loss, digital access control solutions are enabling those in charge of collections to ensure their security and have greater peace of mind.”

Effective wireless fire system pays for itself

A fire risk assessment revealed numerous noncompliances in Wellington College’s existing fire alarm system. In a facility with sleeping quarters, these noncompliances posed a significant risk. Inns of Court shooting lodge frequently hosted house shooting parties, so the college needed to upgrade its fire alarm system without downtime.

Clevedon-based installers, Raw Fire & Security recommended the 100% wireless, EN 54 certified, Cygnus SmartNet-100 fire detection and alarm system due to its fast installation capabilities and the minimal disruption it would cause as there would be no need for extensive ground works, such as duct installation to remote buildings. It also ensures reduced false alarms. The Cygnus SmartNet-100 system allowed the two systems to run ‘side by side’ until the new system was fully commissioned, removing the now redundant, unsightly cabling and avoided

disruption, maintaining the school’s aesthetic standards.

The most significant challenge was the need for a swift installation process. Downtime would lead to revenue losses from cancelled bookings at Wellington College. Thanks to Cygnus’ flexibility and rapid installation, the new fire alarm system was commissioned and installed in just two days. One Cygnus SmartNet-100 Control Panel and 43 devices were installed.

“The 100% wireless SmartNet-100 system met and exceeded our customer’s expectations.

Brivo Releases 2024 Global Security Trends Report

Brivo, a cloud-based access control and smart building technologies, has published its 2024 Top Global Security Trends Report, detailing the most important changes for physical security teams across the globe.

Brivo’s seventh annual trends report is based on 850 responses from security professionals across the UK, US, and Europe, asking the opinions of physical security teams in financial services, technology & IT, manufacturing, retail and more.

Among the key trends detailed in the report is the desire to integrate new security technology with existing systems to better manage people and facilities. Another key trend is high expectations of AI technology, with a need for greater skills and access to data.

The report also shows the continuing evolution of the CSO (Chief Security Officer) role in leading AI implementations. While more important than ever, many lack the appropriate

budget or authority to take full advantage of new technologies – posing a challenge to upgrading security systems.

Key findings from the report include:

36% of security teams lack confidence in their system’s ability to keep their employees and facilities safe, with this rising to almost half in front-line roles.

Ease of integration with other systems was a bigger barrier to adopting new technology than budget constraints.

60% of large enterprises in the U.S. will invest over $1 million annually in AI over the next three years.
