SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

August 2022 This Summers’ hot hits rtificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity seem to be two hot topics this summer. Security cameras using AI is not news, we know about it, and everyone is using it. However, we can see that the technology is taken seriously when even the Ministry of Defence is considering using it for national security. The MoD wants to harness creativity and innovation across Defence and the private sector. This includes the necessary problemsolving approaches to bring use-cases to life appropriately. Since risks and challenges may exist in respect of any part of the ‘system of systems’ across the entire lifecycle of the capability, solutions may similarly be found across the whole ‘system of systems’ and lifecycle. The MoD report stated that AI systems must be used with human implications in mind. Using specific systems where negative human impacts outweigh the benefits may be unethical. On the cyber security front, don’t miss out on Hanwha’s Uri Guterman article, where he warns that hackers are targeting connected devices including IP cameras and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors are creating more opportunities for hackers to cause damage. Today’s cameras are highly advanced and carry the latest firmware. However, legacy devices must be kept up to date if they are not to provide a route for hackers. Responsible camera manufacturers are responding to these concerns with their technology (software and hardware), training, and collaboration with customers, as well as formal accreditations highlighting how secure their processes and solutions are.

Benchmark Innovation Awards Have you voted for your favourite product or company to win the Benchmark Innovation Award 2022? If you want to learn more about some of the finalists, you can read some interesting articles on our website.

There is Vemotion’s VB-200 highly compact, two-channel HD video encoder and recorder has been designed explicitly for discreet installations that require a powerful enough capacity to encode more than one camera efficiently, nominated for the Network and Connectivity category. Texecom’s Web-based portal, which operates on any internet-connected device, Texecom Cloud, is in the Cloud and SaaS category. According to the company, the solution helps installers to save money and increase revenues by being more efficient and adding value to their customers. Hikvision All-in-one Indoor Station is a finalist in the Visit Management Innovation category. The new, improved version of the Allin-one Indoor Station has the Hik-Connect App core, which controls and manages all Hikvision access control, video security, NVRs, intrusion alarm, video intercom, and alarm devices. A.I. Tech’s latest product, the A.I. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment ), has been selected for the Analytics and software innovation category. The video analytics software runs directly on the camera without having to transmit the video stream to a server or the cloud. If the app detects that a worker is not properly wearing a PPE, the worker is informed in realtime, and the light is switched on. These are just a few of the finalists, but who wins depends on your vote. So go ahead, I’ll only take you a couple of minutes. Vote Here Geny Caloisi Content Editor

Penguins find a new use for security cameras US-based National Hockey League franchise Pittsburgh Penguins, is testing Azena’s platform for smart cameras to explore ways to improve operational efficiencies throughout the team’s home venue, PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins hope to streamline wait times at busy concession stands on game days in real time and leverage enhanced retail analytics in its fan stores to increase arena retail sales.

zena’s operating platform for smart cameras integrates with existing video surveillance systems and provides readyto-use Artificial Intelligence-enhanced video analytics applications designed to run simultaneously directly on the camera and can be easily changed based on needs, much like on a smartphone. The upcoming implementation by the Penguins is part of a growing trend within the sports and entertainment venue market to enhance fan experience by leveraging video and data analytics and IoT technology to add value to the spectator journey, while at the same time ensuring security. “The Pittsburgh Penguins are very excited to see the benefits of the Azena analytics in action,” said Erik Watts, Chief Technology Officer for the Pittsburgh Penguins. How HID helped physical access control solutions to take off HID Global has its origins in the aerospace industry. For over 30 years HID has been leading the way on what it takes to make access to buildings easy and secure and how to help businesses evolve with the times. e interviewed Steven Commander, HID Global’s director of consultant business management to find out where the company, and in particular its Physical Access Control Solutions [PACS], is and what can we expect in the near future. Steven has been at HID for 14 years. His role focuses on liaising and engaging with security consultants, electrical engineers and

W 8

access control system designers. His depth of knowledge gives an in-depth insight into HID’s complete range of physical access control solutions so that consultants can include them in their designs.

Can you provide a short introduction to your company? HID originates from the aerospace industry. The name, HID, is an acronym for Hughes Identification Devices. The business was founded in 1991 and was originally a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft. You may remember the 2004 Martin Scorsese film, Aviator, starring Leonardo di Caprio which depicts the life of the founder of the firm, Howard Hughes. HID was acquired in 2000 by the Swedish conglomerate, Assa Abloy AB, a global leader in access solutions, and is now a whollyowned business within the group. The group has 190 brands, such as HID and Yale [locks

and home security]; significant market leaders in their own right. HID Global’s vision is powering the trusted identities of the world’s people, places and things. Every day millions of people in more than 100 countries use its products and services to securely access physical and digital places. And over two billion things that need to be identified, verified and tracked are connected through HID’s technology. The company structure comprises six business areas: Physical Access Control Solutions (PACS), Secure Issuance (SI), Identity and Access Management Solutions (IAMS), Citizen ID Solutions (CID), Identification Technologies and Extended Access Technology (EAT). Put simply, HID Global sells products and services to enable authorised access to buildings, allows people to securely log into computer networks and track assets in manufacturing plants and other commercial settings. HID Global also makes the various components like chips that go into passports, national ID cards and driving licences. The scope of its portfolio is broad. From a PACS perspective, the mission of the company is to be a market leader for trusted identity solutions by providing a seamless customer experience leveraging a connected architecture complemented by cloud services. To provide some scale to this, as international markets recovered after Covid19, group sales increased 8% in 2021 to SEK 95,007 million [Kronor] with operating profits up 19% to SEK 14,181 million. In Pounds Sterling, that’s around £7.74 billion and £1.14 billion respectively. HID Global employs about 4,400 people worldwide.

Millions of HID readers and hundreds of millions of HID cards are therefore in use today. HID solutions are used in all industry sectors such as government, education, healthcare, financial services and so on.

HID’s main flagship PACS products are: • Seos® – credential technology platform; • HID Signo™ Readers – the signature line of HID readers launched in 2020 • HID Mobile Access® – allows an individual’s mobile device to be used to gain access to secured doors, gates, networks, and services • HID Aero™ and HID Mercury Controllers – a controller range which provides a flexible, open architecture, IP-enabled platform for deploying a broad range of access control systems • HID Origo™ – a cloud platform which allows technology partners to create access control solutions. It stores identity information about users in a database, their access rights to a building, specific zones and so on.

What are the company’s flagship PACS products? When a person wishes to enter a building, they walk up to a door, use a badge to touch a reader on the wall and then – if authorised – a controller unlocks the door giving them access. The component and platform technology behind this simple scenario is what HID Global designs, manufactures and sells. In other words, the badges, readers, [door] controller modules and associated management software. This has now evolved into a mobile and digitally based approach underpinned by cloud-based services.

Cybersecurity in cameras cannot be overlooked Many organisations invest in physical security systems but don’t realise that their video surveillance and IoT devices can be back doors exploited by malicious actors. Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe recommends looking for ‘trust marks’ to ensure your surveillance system is secure. he pandemic and mass remote work options provide criminals with a perfect opportunity to profit. The focus on cybersecurity should not slack for any organisation. According to reports, there were 304 significant malicious attacks in Europe in 2020, more than double the number of hacks in 2019. Then there’s the increased risk of cyberwarfare in the wake of the Russian-

Today’s cameras are highly advanced and carry the latest firmware. However, legacy devices must be kept up to date if they are not to provide a route for hackers. “The unfortunate truth remains that although many organisations invest in their physical security systems, they don’t always realise that their video surveillance and IoT devices can be back doors exploited by malicious actors. Compromised cameras and other connected devices can become a foothold to launch an attack on a network, a technique known as pivoting. t is not just the bigger vessels that need a viable solution. Owners of any size vessel have to decide whether to invest over £5,000-6,000 into a specialised alarm system or to adapt a car/motorcycle alarm system. The latter option is quite a hassle as navigation, key vessel indicators, controls, and security are expected to be accessible on a digital dashboard and smartphone — anywhere, anytime. This is when companies such as UK-based Marine Energy Systems (MES) can offer their expertise. MES works with big players and customers in this sector, including Sunseeker, a well-known luxury super yacht manufacturer, and many others. MES had a request to supply boats with a security system which is compatible with the yachts’ onboard software. Ideally, the system needed to support cellular connectivity; have a mobile app to report alerts; be straightforward to install; and

Keeping conveyor belts running smoothly with reliable, 24/7 video monitoring A major logistics centre based near the UK’s East Midlands Airport needed an efficient video surveillance system to monitor its operations, specifically an automated part of its warehouse that operates 24/7 to fulfil orders. The logistics company handles packages for contract customers including major retailers and is subject to strict service level agreements; so any downtime in its operations may incur significant penalties, damage its reputation, and impact customer loyalty in a competitive industry. he automated picking area handles approximately 90 parcels a minute and operates 24/7 so the cameras and video management system (VMS) selected needed to be reliable and easily supported remotely. The

cameras also needed to be high definition, and highly accurate, due to the speed of the processing in the picking area. As a result, the logistics company turned to Zicam and Hanwha Techwin, as previous projects gave the team confidence in Hanwha Techwin’s reliability and ease of use.

A state-of-the-art solution Zicam and Hanwha Techwin implemented a standalone system for the picking area to give a comprehensive overview of any issues occurring on-site such as conveyor belt jamming, equipment failure, or parcels falling from the belt. Quick responses are critical with a fast-moving conveyor system, so the cameras used, coupled with the Wisenet WAVE VMS, enable the company’s 24-hour engineering team to take quick action. This keeps downtime and parcel build-up to a minimum and maintains the productivity of the site. The site uses Wisenet QND-8080R cameras,
