Truckers and the rest of the transportation industry have a long history of supporting their communities with fundraisers of various types. Congratulations to all the participants of the Chrome for Kids fundraiser held at Mission Raceways August 8-9. Cherie Spence from the Children’s Hospital tells us that a total of $75,000.00 was raised at the event. She said they were absolutely thrilled with the money and although not sure exactly John White what machine it would be used for, it will definitely be used to purchase equipment for the cardiology department. This year Alberta Big Rig Weekend was both interesting and awesome. We were swamped with trucks Friday night, parking well over double the normal number for a Friday. Then in the middle of the night a typical Red Deer storm moved in with heavy rain and wind. The next morning the wind had died down but the rain continued sporadically until early Saturday afternoon. After that it cleared and turned into a great show – many saying the best Alberta Show ever. The Best Lights competition was fantastic but then something very special happened. We noticed a slight glow to the north that soon turned into spectacular colours dancing across the sky. Brad Demelo, our photographer, realizing it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, grabbed his camera and over the next hour or so, took some amazing shots of the northern lights with trucks in the foreground. You can see many of those pictures in this issue. It is not often that we have a problem deciding which cover shot to use but not only did we have the northern lights pictures, we also had some other very special shots to consider. Alicia Cornish, daughter of Dean Cornish, (truck on page 31) approached Ben Proudley wanting to recreate a picture after the show that she had seen on a Facebook page. When Ben and Alicia let it be known what they wanted to do they ended up with 37 trucks in the adjacent parking lot. Not being able to agree on which picture to use on our cover, Tori came up with the idea of putting them on our Facebook page to let our readers decide. We had a great response and a clear winner. The 2nd place picture is on page 24. You can see many other great pictures in this issue, on our website, and on Alicia’s Facebook page: DieZel Photography. We would like to say a special thank you to all the drivers and companies who came out to our Big Rig Weekends as well as to the many other truck shows that were held across Western Canada this year. You do not have to drive a customized truck - when any clean and polished truck is seen on the highway it raises the esteem of all truckers in the eyes of the public.
