Letter People in most countries dread the thought of winter coming. Whereas I think it’s fair to say most of us are wishing it would come early this year! The humidity is not sparing a soul and one can only wonder when we will finally be able to bring out those autumnwinter knitties which we neatly stacked away earlier this year. The fashion gurus are not waiting for anyone though! Our fashion section reveals your dream winter wardrobe; particularly Bahraini fashion designer, Amal Al Mulla (Pg 48) who takes laces and floral prints to the next level with her latest collection. Also read about tips on how to choose your leather, shoes and bags to get some heads turning at work (or for your next holiday over EID perhaps?). Our MAKEOVER is back (Pg 18) and this time we’re introducing a life coach and

There a number of new places to dine, spas to pamper yourselves, music concerts and projects to enjoy, places to shop and yes; comedy, comedy and more comedy – Chuckle Club resumes this month. If you’re looking for a fab fun night, this is one event that should be scheduled into your diary every month. Famous, international comedians are flown in and will have you howling if not crying with laughter the whole night. Check Pg 14 to 20 to see what fun is in store all this month and more! Now the holidays are over. It’s time to get back into shape! There’s a whole range of fitness gadgets to choose from on Pg 80 so there’s no excuse for carrying around that extra tyre around your waist any longer. We also bring you the latest dining promotions (Pg 117) and the scoop on Bahrain’s nightlife (Pg 120). Don’t forget to browse through our updated Restaurant Listings (Pg 123). Hello, I was on a holiday in Spain, this Eid and found your magazine in my hotel room. Do you guys distribute to Spain as well? I thought it was just Bahrain and select stores in Dubai.

Hello David, at present we only distribute in Bahrain and select Jashanmal stores in Dubai. I suppose one of our readers must have taken the magazine with him/her on a holiday to Spain and left it back at the hotel room.

Dear Editor, I’m a regular reader of Bahrain Confidential. Thanks to your website and online edition, I have been able to continue reading the mag even after I shifted to the US two years ago. I particularly loved the travel feature in the last month’s issue. Never knew there were so many interesting places in India that magazines and websites hardly talk of. Most of them promote the Taj Mahal or beaches in Goa – beautiful, but cliché! Keep up the good work!

Tanya Martis, Homemaker, USA

Thanks, Tanya! We thought why not take unbeaten path and we’re glad it worked in our favour 

Hi! I took the quiz which was published in your August 2014 issue and it left me confused. I’m a fashionista and quite the diva among all my friends. Well, “according to your quiz results”, I should stick to tea-shades but I believe I’m the cat-eye shades type; believe me I know myself better than anyone else. You guys need to work harder on publishing the right things! Diva

Hello Diva, you definitely are one! That quiz was a fun thing to do while sipping on your evening cuppa, on your couch. The results are not carved in stone, so relax. And what so wrong about tea-shades? But then we get your point, they are for the intellectual kind!

W

illiams had risen to fame long ago, portraying roles with both skill and enthusiasm. He had ventured out onto the big screen to play a quite elderly Peter Pan, the big blue Genie from everybody’s childhood, an eccentric Russian gynecologist, a manly nanny, the not-so-waxed figure of Theodore Roosevelt, and of course, Batty Koda. He had made us laugh until our stomachs hurt, and now, cry until our eyes were sore. Williams was a good soul, one to enlighten the audience that would surround him. He was a man of wit, with humour that got him voted as “Funniest” back in 1969 by his senior class upon his graduation. Williams left this world with a strange heart, the same character of which got him voted as “Most Likely Not to Succeed” that same summer ’69. And naturally, while Williams produced a charm for the sake of his friends, family, and fans – he was actually severely depressed. Williams had taken on drinking to mute his gloominess; this might have worked for a few years, but did not relive him enough to stop him that night, 11th August, 2014. But beyond the sad depart of Robin Williams; the hearts of many who needed a lifting spirit had been captivated throughout the years. Williams had proven to summon a party of laughs wherever he went, pulling along characters he had created with the powerful thrill of comedy – the birth to his long-lived fame. And as people all pay their respects through flowers, speeches, messages via social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, this is what we have to say. “Robin Williams, you will be missed; thanks for the laughs, Rob. Cheers.”

10 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

Robin Williams, You Will Be Missed... As he stated in one of his most favourable quotes, beloved comedian and actor Robin Williams was given only a little spark of madness, and he did all not to lose it till his most sudden and tragic death.

COMEDY CENTRAL WITH MAX AMINI Max Amini, the well-known Iranian-American comedian is about to crack this little island up. Max Amini, an Iranian- American comedian began his stand-up comedy career at the LA Improv in 2002. For his final class of the comedy workshop, he described himself as the ‘worst kid in class’ at the end of his act, which got the audience very interested in this young and funny man. Since then, Max Amini has been on a roll. He performed all around the world, and expressed his opinion on family and cultural topics through his hilarious and spectacular theatrics. His comedy caught on and soon he was chosen as one of the finalists for NBC’s Diversity Showcase, where he started his own comedy tour, called ‘Exotic Imports’- that featured second generation Americans that come from diverse cultural backgrounds. When he isn’t touring, Max Amini is performing at Comedy Store and Laugh Factory in LA. And if you thought Max Amini was just a famous stand-up comedian, there’s more to this man! He has been an actor to a number of films and TV credits, which include NBC’s Heros, Comedy Central’s Mind of Menica, and also played a leading role in the movie, How Beer Pong Saved my Life. Before

@ConfidentialBah

I have always wanted to build my own teddy bear. And no, it isn’t only for kids. I love teddy bears. They are snuggly and definitely huggable. When the opportunity presented itself, there was no way I was letting it go. So, off I went to build my bear. If there is one thing that is commendable at the Build-A-Bear Workshop, it is the energy of each and every staff that was present there. No wonder kids choose Build-A-Bear as their gifts every single time! So, the process is simple, interactive and very enjoyable. You get to choose from their range of unstuffed animals. Once you decide which animal you want, you then get to add music, a heartbeat and help get your bear/animal stuffed. It is SO MUCH FUN! The best part for me was when I got to make a wish and put it in my bear. Like that, it stayed close to me. Once your bear/animal is stuffed, you get to wash it. When he/she is all cleaned up, you then choose the perfect outfit for your new best friend. The last bit was adorable because it I got to fill out my teddy’s birth certificate. Yes, A Birth Certificate! His name, the day he was born, to whom he belongs, it’s all in there. Personalising your stuffed animal couldn’t’ get better!

BECOME A BLACK BELT NEGOTIATOR

Tom Flatau

Negotiation is tricky, even for the most experienced professionals. Whether dealing with external or internal customers, suppliers or contractors negotiation can be a minefield, with relationships, egos and finances at stake. Do you need a boost in confidence when it comes to your negotiation skills?

“I have had other negotiation skills workshops in the past; this session delivered by Teamworking International was head & shoulders above everything else!” Maryeis Marapao, Project Manager – City University, London

Help is available. Internationally acclaimed speaker and coach, Tom Flatau, is back in Bahrain once again to hold a highly interactive one-day ‘Become a Black Belt Negotiator’ programme.

Does this sound familiar?

• You lack the confidence to launch an effective case. • You don’t know how to prepare your case. • You struggle to understand other’s motivations and hidden interests. • You are forced to cut prices so you don’t lose the sale. • You assume the other side has the power. • You fail to notice signals and body language. • You assume giving concessions will create good will.

Or maybe you just want to take your negotiation skills to the next level?

Join the ‘Become a Black Belt Negotiator’ programme. The programme has a proven record of success and has been used within major companies such as Qatar Airways, HSBC and Siemens to increase profit and create new business accounts.

Get what you want, when you want, at the price you want!

Black Belt graduates from across the globe have become an asset to their organisation, boosting profits and developing great business relationships by: • Presenting their case with maximum impact. • Exuding self confidence. • Working out hidden interests. • Knowing how to avoid being beaten down on price. 20 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

• Shifting the balance of power in their favour - every time. • Understanding signals and body language. • Knowing how to spot the seven most common tricks AND countering them. • Understanding the cross-cultural aspects of negotiation. • Using win-win negotiation to achieve better relationships. Tom Flatau believes anyone can learn the skills to be a great negotiator: “People often believe excellent negotiation is ‘in the blood’. This simply isn’t true. It just takes the right techniques to unleash those skills,” says Tom. Revolutionise your ability to achieve a profitable outcome every time you negotiate a deal, and build better business relationships too!

Gather at the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry on September 30, 9am to 5pm, to discover the art of win-win negotiations using a tried and tested 5-step process that guarantees results.

To book your place, contact kole@team-working.com or visit www.team-working.com *Tom is an expert in the field of leadership development with more than 20 years of experience working worldwide. interview

Bil3afya Bayti!

Food lovers are flocking to Bayti, the newly opened Middle Eastern, casual dining restaurant under Bahrain Family Leisure Company. General Manager, Peter Lyons talks of the journey so far.

“Our Chocolate Shawarma which is a great dessert – chocolate shavings from our custom Peter Lyons made 35kg cylinder of white and dark chocolate are added to sweet pita bread and mixed with a variety of toppings. It’s then served with pineapple cinnamon fries and a scoop of ice cream – pure indulgence!”

The beautiful interior at Bayti

How did you come up with the concept and what were the challenges? Right from the start, we wanted to create something unique but we knew it had to cater for the predominately Middle Eastern crowd that populates the financial harbour. We started to look at various Middle Eastern cuisines but couldn’t fix on a specific one that hasn’t already been offered in the Kingdom. This idea led to “hey, let’s do all Middle Eastern cuisines” and Bayti was born. We had to study lots of different countries, purchase a tonne of books on food in the region and experiment quite a bit with the recipes. What we came up with was a modern selection of traditional recipes that taste and look great.

What is your vision for Bayti? Bayti is ideally situated for guests who work in the financial harbour – but we knew of a

26 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

night that this demographic was not going to be around. Our plan was always to create a strong breakfast and lunch trade but then come up with an evening menu which would attract locals, tourists and expats alike. The A la Carte menu therefore is something very special – we have Bahraini dishes, Egyptian, Syrian and many more – all designed with passion and to wow the guest. That’s the first part of the vision; the second is to deliver a great experience to each guest through a hospitality driven team. We have trained our staff to interact with guests and drop the robotic ‘sir and ma’am’ that I believe detracts from a real experience in most restaurants around.

Any dish you recommend at Bayti?

Hard to pick but we have some excellent, unique items you won’t find anywhere else. Our gourmet Shawarma is already proving a

sure fire hit with guests. We offer the guest a completely customised dish; they pick a flavour wrap, the marinade and then the filling and we even offer seafood Shawarma or vegetarian option. I also have to mention our Chocolate Shawarma which is a great dessert – chocolate shavings from our custom made 35kg cylinder of white and dark chocolate are added to sweet pita bread and mixed with a variety of toppings. It’s then served with pineapple cinnamon fries and a scoop of ice cream – pure indulgence! Bayti is located off the King Faisal highway next to Kid’s Kingdom. Inside The Bubble

Let’s say you mix the game of football with a hint of bumper cars and a tiny pinch of American Football while you are at it. That is exactly what this new sport is- Bubble Football. Bahrain Confidential’s Jenny Thomas talks to the people who brought this new entertainment sport to BahrainArif Khalifa, Part Owner of Bubble Bash. it is and how it is played, my brother and I thought why not give Bahrain an entertaining sport to play during the weekends. We went ahead and found ourselves a supplier in the next couple of days and things just kept on going from then on.

Explain the concept of the game.

It is basically football with a whole lot of craziness. This is a game that unleashes the child within you. So, you climb into this giant inflatable plastic ball, fall over a lot while trying to score a goal and at the same time, attempt to bash your opponents.

What was the initial reaction of the customers when you first introduced Bubble Football here?

I have to admit, we were a little nervous because we didn’t know what the reaction of the general public would be. It was a little difficult to start it off in Bahrain. It took a lot of determination and patience and now we have an exclusive partnership with Soccer City to assign a pitch for us.

Arif Khalifa

Bubble Football originated in Norway in 2011, when two football fanatics decided to combine football and zorbing. And three years later, Bubble Football spread its wings and landed on our own little island. All thanks to the owners of Bubble Bash, Arif and Adel Khalifa.

How did you come up with the idea?

Social media really does inspire great ideas. We were browsing Facebook when we saw a post on this fascinating game. Reading what

What’s in store for the future?

There are tournaments coming up, so stay tuned. From September, Bubble Bash will be available at Lost Paradise of Dilmun.

Rules of the game.

There are no fouls, it’s just football with no rules. A lot more fun that way, people can agree. Bubble Bash is located at Soccer City and for the ladies who want a private space, it can be available or arranged. At Bubble Bash’s venue, each balloon is BD6/hr. At a venue of your choice, each balloon is priced at BD4/hr with a minimum of 2 hours prior notice. They also cater to corporate events, birthdays, parties, and family gatherings and summer camps for kids. For more information, call +973 36339968 Or visit www.bubblebashbh.com

Journey’s End David Hollywood shares a seasonal ditty about the efforts of a butterfly and its short life.

Sweet little butterfly, on your wing, How your flutters beat, As you bring, A long your rambles feat, And your swing, Into each journey sweet, Past each scene. Race in the final heat, Now you’re keen, To find a settled seat, As you’ve, seen, On your travelled feet, All you’ve been.

“For the past few years most of my paintings have been figurative woman – the femininity in my art is dominant.” What inspired you to become an artist? Well, it wasn’t really an inspiration – more of a hobby. Since I was young I have always had it in me and had great interest in painting, sculpting, embroidery and even interior design. Art is an endless spectrum of expressions and feelings whether it is delivered in the form of sound, music, painting or even dance. Art plays a major role in my life and the way I live, it makes me feel free and relaxed when I am doing it.

How were you influenced to become an artist – your parents, your friends, your teachers, other famous artists? Mostly family, yes. My family is the source of most of my inspiration and influences when I am doing art. Combined with the many excellent teachers, colleagues and friends whom I worked with over the years, it has provided me with great knowledge and skills in my field, all of whom are great artists which I had great pleasure working with. My husband is my main influence, he always supported, encouraged and put faith in me to continue my art until today.

Did you enjoy art as a child or did the passion develop much later? Seema Baqi

Yes. since I was a child, the passion was there. I stopped art for some time, to focus on my studies, my job and my children, over the years. But I later developed the love for it once again. It was always in me, it never died.

art space

Where do you often gain your insights from? I get them from everywhere, everyday, what I feel, my mood on the day. It’s tough to explain, but an artist always expresses his/her feelings with his/her art and mostly it would be related to his/her life and what he/she sees and feels in the moment. For instance, when I travel I pick up many inspirations and insights on the way and translate them into art by what I see and feel during these travels. For the past few years most of my paintings have been figurative woman – the femininity in my art is dominant. Usually, I cast out recent or current emotions, or maybe activities or events involving other people, such as my friends and family or an experience. It really all comes down to how I feel; it’s natural.

Are all your artworks different or do they each share something in common? They all share a common factor, yes. The colours and my brush touch usually – I really enjoy using blue, so most, if not all of my paintings will have some blue in there. I like using common colours as I’m good with laying out different hues.

Does your family enjoy art as much as you do? Yes, my husband and children; particularly my oldest son and daughter are into art – like their mother, it’s in their blood as it’s been part of their surroundings and upbringing.

Alright, Seema. Last question; what advice would you give to young artists out there, just starting out to make their work big? Follow your passion. Don’t give up. Just go after your instincts and feelings when expressing your art. If you have that talent don’t ever let it die. Work hard on what you want to achieve and always practice. Art is truly something different; it’s where you find your inner peace, where you find yourself. Check out Seema’s work on seemaart.com

THE FIRST DAY School, heaven or hell? discusses Dilara Nagib.

Dilara Nagib

B

ack to School. Ugh. First thing that comes to mind; lesson-time, seeing your teachers, homework (or as I like to call it homEWork), tests, gym class, more homework… But it really doesn’t have to revolve around pessimistic thoughts. School grounds can also be one of the best places to run into your old friends – whether that’s your best friends, or just pally classmates – the same people you haven’t seen for nearly three months. School-life isn’t just about classes, and homework *shudders*, and irritable pop quizzes. This is where you make memories, gossip when you know you’re not supposed to but you do anyway because the teacher’s voice sounds like a nasal voice-recording. Here, drama happens. Big time. People will get into serious fights, heated arguments – and yes, despite how much you’d like a “fresh start” there’s no avoiding that one person who just has to spark a needless flame: this, unfortunately, always costs friendships…even the ones that have been around for a long time. But a fresh start is by no means impossible. first off; stay away from the problematic types. Now, I didn’t say a name, did I? But did someone come to mind? Of course!

“Have a nice, healthy breakfast to get your mind active and working. Shower, clean up, spray a bit of perfume or deodorant, do something different with your hair. Feel better, be better.” It’s better to have a few close, good, real friends that will constantly be there for you, rather than a whole lot of people surrounding you only when they need help – see, they’re classified as The Fake Ones. Time does evidently change people; you’ll be forced to remember the good memories differently, in fact, you yourself might become an amended person by the start of the new academic year. It all comes down to the habitat you find yourself in, good vibes… or negativity? At the start of every morning, when you bash that alarm into silence, remember to just take a few minutes of you-time, think through what your plans are for the day. Have a nice, healthy breakfast to get your mind active and working. Shower, clean up, spray a bit of perfume or deodorant, do something different with your hair. Feel better, be better. Walk into school with a

great attitude, make new friends, create the worst most ridiculous inside jokes that get you in a heap of giggles. Ignore the drama queens (or kings) and keep to yourself and those real friends of yours. Any uncalled for attention that depresses or frustrates you – this rule doesn’t apply for teachers, sorry – walk away from it. You don’t need it. It will affect your grades, your relationships with the people you care for…don’t give anyone the power to deprive you of your happiness – it is yours, for crying out loud. Always feel confident – but don’t overdo it! – and present yourself with a strong, great air. You’re a lovely person. You have a good life, no matter how hard it gets. Focus on the positive things in your life and the rest will fall into place. School isn’t heaven, but it’s certainly not hell either.

WHEN MY SISTER MOVED AWAY by Zahra Zuhair

When my sister moved away, the sky turned grey. The sun hid behind the clouds and the world was no longer proud. When my sister moved away, a sadness came by to stay. The flowers decided not to bloom, and I had no one with whom to share my room.

There’s no one to fight with anymore, and now my heart is sore. When my sister moved away, I thought she might forget me someday. I still wonder if she might, some time. To make sure she doesn’t, I write this rhyme.

When my sister moved away, I never thought I’d miss her like I do today.

When I was written I was born, I came forth not from light, But from the darkness of night, In a literary work I first breathed, A foul breath of man’s decay, I came to life from a dream that day. I was bound and banished, My bringing was horrific, crude, I was deemed vile for the current mood. But those who feared shunned me, For all convention I tore apart, Misapprehended I was from the start. Phantasmal imaginings of terror, Foreign mystery and torment attacked, And those who first heard shuddered back! I am the murder of euphemism, The vengeful roar of repression, An expulsion of human confessions. Wild and unholy, so I was forlorn, As it dealt with unspeakable conditions, Men gave it no right recognition.

Lofty glass mosaic bringing in the light. Orthogonal in writing script, I am the art of lines, Those that soar high into the divine. My purpose is of questioning, My pleasure is a painting Of the most terrible nightmare, Presented skillfully to tear Open the surface layers and skin, So that the skeletal shape within Forming the bars of a cage, May the soul slip to its escape Away from torment and pain, And drink from the fountain again Of life’s mystique beauty abound, The heart pounds aloud, And expands the shaken mind, While the soul leaves behind, It’s fearful body all alone, Briefly before the gargoyle Turns to stone.

In buildings I was called Barbaric, Untamed, destructing order and rules, A practice manifested by Masonic fools! The structures of stone did survive, And grew to influence all those who saw, The majestic buildings inspiring awe. Revered for its skeletal structure, And ever exalted heights,

In Conversation With

Duaa Zainal

Chatting with the famous and loved Duaa Zainal, a Bahraini fashion student and blogger loving in Hong Kong. Going by the name, I Speak Fashion, she loves being associated with style and fashion.

Define yourself.

I’m a Bahraini Fashion Stylist and Blogger who lives in Hong Kong, and a graduate in fashion styling and photography from London Collage of Fashion. I can tell you that following my dream of having a fashion career is the best decision I ever made.

What pairings do you think are the ‘must have street style’?

Multi prints, colour block outfits, Kimonos and distressed jeans.

A thing you cannot live without.

My Chanel Caviar black shopping bag; it’s my day-to-day bag that suits each and every outfit and always leaves me looking fashionable even on the most casual of days.

blogger Your style icon.

At the moment, I will have to say it’s Sama and Haya Abu Khadra. I love their style and how they mix and match outfits that compliment each other; it is definitely unique and chic.

A talent you would love to have and why?

Two talents actually. • Sowing or tailoring, because I would love to be able to customise some of my outfits and give it that distinctive and personal touch. • Playing a musical instrument like an acoustic guitar. Being able to create music is one of the most amazing things in life. I can sing, but that’s as far as I can go.

Has being in Hong Kong inspired your style?

Yes, for sure! It has changed my whole point of view on fashion and style and definitely made me dress differently. Hong Kong is one of the biggest fashion capitals, which I think has not yet been truly discovered.

If you had to start something in Bahrain, what would it be and why?

A styling agency, because I think Bahrain needs a proper agency and advisory for fashion styling whether it’s for personal shopping services or editorial photo shoot styling.

Describe your everyday style.

High waist skirts, colourful tops and print pants; I always love dressing up in bold colors.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind with these words? Coffee: Morning Accessories: Fashionable Neon: Pink Beach: Heaven Weekend: Celebration Blogging: Passion

Real Hair vs. Synthetic …which is better for you? Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, Jessica Simpson, Britany Spears… apart from being mega superstars, what do they have in common? They wear hair extensions. So, whether you like them or not hair extensions are here to stay. They add volume, length and can help to restore confidence, particularly if someone’s suffering from thinning or hair loss. As the demand for extensions has increased so has the choice; glue, clips, wefts, grips, tape …. it is endless! Once you’ve decided which one’s to go with, the next big question is do you choose real over synthetic hair? At one stage synthetic hair was considered the cheap alternative to real hair as you couldn’t style it in the same way that you could with real hair. Those days are long gone and in truth do you really want to use real hair?

Ethical Dilemma!

In addition to basic cons of using real hair, there is a basic dilemma that hair extension users face. One of the ethical issues is from whom the ‘real hair’ was sourced. Was the hair forcibly cut from a young, very poor girl in return for pennies to feed her family? Taking the real hair debate to the next level; did you know that it’s possible to get DNA samples, drug testing material etc. from real hair. So, do you really want to be wearing someone else’s DNA on your head? How can you be sure that your real hair extensions didn’t come from a drug addict wanting money to score?

Effortless Hair Extensions by BECCA

Effortless Hair Extensions take seconds to put in without any assistance and require no clips, glue, tape or glue which will eventually damage your own hair. Available in 2 lengths 16 and 24-inch, made from the most advanced synthetic hair technology – FEELsoREAL. Effortless Hair Extensions can be washed and styled as you would your own hair and comes in 21 colours, 3 European styles and 5 Asian/ Afro styles causes NO DAMAGE to your own hair! 68 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

“How can you be sure that your real hair extensions didn’t come from a drug addict wanting money to score?”

Synthetic vs. Real Hair

Pros of Synthetic Hair • It can be shampooed and blow dried as you would your own hair • It can be hot ironed or curled as you would your own hair • It doesn’t tangle or shed like real hair • It will last longer than real hair if properly maintained

Before Back

• It feels as soft and silky as healthy hair • It can be cut to suit shorter hair styles • It dries quicker than real hair • There are no ethical issues attached to synthetic hair Cons of Synthetic Hair • It can’t be dyed. Pros of Real Hair • It can be dyed • It is easy to back comb Cons of Real Hair • Depending on what extensions you use. Real hair can tangle so badly that it can actually knot into your own hair • It sheds more than synthetic hair • When wet the hair becomes very heavy and can take a long time to dry • It can require a lot of styling • It requires a lot more maintenance than synthetic hair

interview

The Heart Talk

In conversation with Dr. S.A. Hussain, Specialist Physician & Cardiologist at Ibn Al Nafees Hospital.

Dr. S.A. Hussain

The basic thumb rule of heart care.

The rules to basic heart care vary with age. If you do not have a family history of blood pressure, sugars, cholesterol or any illness that can affect the heart, then all you are required to do is be healthy and fit with a proper diet and daily exercises. • Avoid smoking • Do not binge drink • Reduce intake of fast food • Keep your weight in check • Replace regular salt with low sodium salt • Control cholesterol, blood pressure. Do not put yourself in a situation where you need daily medication. Now if you have had a checkup and you have been diagnosed, make sure you follow the doctor’s instructions and take the necessary precautions and medications. Occasionally, after being diagnosed patients refuse to take medications. Doctors knows what is best for your health. Listen to them, advice from a layman may cost you your health!

Are heart diseases, in most cases hereditary?

Family history plays a very important role in coronary heart disease. In Bahrain, the cases of heart diseases are quite high especially incidence of arrhythmias and coronary artery disease. This could be because of life style, quality of food, hereditary, etc.

Best and worst food/diet for the heart.

Food that is naturally rich in omega 3 fatty acid, Vitamin C are good for the heart. Have a regular intake of dairy like yoghurt, cheese, etc, preferably skimmed or low fat. Almonds and walnuts are also good. The worst foods for your heart are those that are concentrated with unhealthy fats and/or sugar/refined carbohydrates.

70 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

What routine checkup must one go through? Is there a specific one?

Again this depends from person to person and what age category you fall into. If you are 40 and above, a thorough cardiac check up at least once a year is recommended. If you are 20 and above, it depends on contributing risk factors a person has, and their family history. Anybody who suffers from chest pain, shortness of breath, heartburn, tiredness should get checked up. Specific check ups for the heart include ECG, 2D Echo, TMT, lipid profile, blood sugar, homocysteine and cardiophase CRP.

What is your opinion of today’s generation who has a family history of hypertension? How risky is it? What precaution must they take? Anybody who has a family history of hypertension should extremely careful. People are prone to get hypertension if they do not maintain ideal body weight,

consume high sodium content in food, and have a sedentary life style. Blood pressure increases the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, renal impairment and diastolic dysfunction. It is advisable to get one routine check up done.

Can a person help himself during a heart attack?

Yes, definitely. First thing, call an ambulance. Heart attack cannot be treated at home or the street.

How one does destress the heart?

Your heart is an extremely sensitive organ. Little amounts of tension can stress the heart. Music, exercise, meditation, are just some ways to relax your heart. Make sure you take time to relax and rest. This helps not only your heart but your entire body. For more information, call Tel. +973 17828282 Or visit www.ibnalnafees.com

WHAT IS PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY? Gulf Dental Specialty Hospital strongly believes in Preventive Dentistry. The reality is that a lot of patients come to the dentist when severe pain has already struck. Unfortunately, that’s often after damage has been done. That is why patients need to be encouraged and educated to practice preventive dentistry. Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for your teeth to keep them healthy. This helps to avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. There are many forms of preventive dentistry, such as daily brushing and annual dental cleanings. By practicing preventive dentistry, you can safeguard yourself from exorbitant dental costs as well as serious oral diseases. The truth is that effective preventive dentistry combines at-home oral care by patients with treatments by dental professionals. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a minimum of two dental checkups each year for professional cleaning and management of any developing conditions. This can help your dentist stop dental disease in its earliest stages,

protecting your smile and limiting your expense. Since most dental conditions are painless at first, if you don’t regularly visit your dentist, you may not be aware of dental problems until they cause significant damage. For best results, schedule regular dental check-ups every six months; more often if you’re at higher risk for oral diseases. Especially for children, checking oral growth and development (including an assessment for caries development) should be part of dental evaluations. ‘We have been working hard in the last few months to raise awareness and encourage regular visits to the dentist’, explains Hospital’s CEO Dr Amina Mustafa. ‘We began our awareness campaign by producing fun short films that offer advice on how to protect your oral health; these have been popular and can be found on our webpage, social media pages and YouTube! The Hospital has also introduced a loyalty card to encourage people to get regular check ups annually.’

The Loyalty Card gives patients’ one free consultation, a free cleaning and one free X-Ray. ‘We are hoping that this may encourage patients to get regular check ups and assist them in practicing prevention.’ This card also offers options of installment for Orthodontics as well as 15% discount on all treatments. The Loyalty Card can be found at the Hospital’s Reception desk. For more information, visit www.gdshospital.com or call +973 17 741444. For queries, email services@gdshospital.com

STORIES OF A TRAILING SPOUSE

Maria Sorger

Maria Sorger shares tips on how to positively embrace change.

“Learn something new. Help people. Write a book. Whatever you choose to do will define the new you and give you a sense of accomplishment that will leave you no time to dwell on yesterday.”

Y

ou have often heard it said that change is the only constant. And yet most of us resent change, we often fear it as we don’t know what it will bring. We prefer to stay in our comfort zone where everything is familiar and things work – somehow… But change is happening around us and for us. You suddenly find yourself packing up your home – your comfort nest – and moving to faraway places following your partner. Not only do you need to adapt to your new environment, make new friends, and ensure your integration in your new home is seamless for you and the whole family, but most importantly you need to let go of the life you have had. Otherwise you won’t be able to move on and be happy. And yet how often do we talk about what we had, and how we are not able to obtain it in our new home. How satisfied we were

74 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

at work and how we are not working now. How many good friends we had and we have left them behind. The ‘issues’ go on and on - anything to hold on to our past, to what’s familiar. But by doing so we are limiting our ability to enjoy what we have in the present. I am not saying it is easy or simple to let go of our attachment to the past especially if it is a happy past. It takes time, effort and a conscious change in attitude. It is a day to day commitment. You have to constantly reset your mind and change how you interact with everything and everyone on a moment to moment basis. Through my many years of travelling, settling in foreign countries and adapting to new cultures, what has helped me move forward is understanding how important it is to relish the present moment and to define myself by doing something meaningful. RELISH THE PRESENT. Your present life is what you have now – it has both positive and negative aspects to it. Enjoy it. Embrace it and move forward with all that you have: the people you have met, the house you

made your home, the town or the city you live in. What you had before is gone. Everytime your mind starts to compare your present life to what you had prior to your move, manoeuvre back to the present, to what you are facing now and focus on the positive experiences. DEFINE YOURSELF. Instead of thinking about the type of person you were and the job or responsibility you had, do something meaningful, something worthwhile that will define who you are now. Learn something new. Help people. Write a book. Whatever you choose to do will define the new you and give you a sense of accomplishment that will leave you no time to dwell on yesterday. No matter how you look at it there will be challenges ahead – keep a positive attitude and remember things and situations are always changing. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift!” Maria Sorger is a marketing professional and MBA graduate. Your Childhood Island is

BACK! Whoever has been in Bahrain since they were little children will remember how much fun a trip to Hawar Islands was. And now, it’s gotten better. Having acquired the Hawar Resort Hotel, VKL Group gives everyone the kind of getaway that is guaranteed to be memorable and entertaining; especially for those who love to spend weekends with just the people you love. 20 kilometres southeast of mainland Bahrain, it is just a 45-minute boat ride from the Al Dur Jetty Marina. For those who prefer the luxurious travel to the beautiful island, there is good news. A seaplane is underway and those who wish to fly the 9-seater plane can reach the islands in approximately 15 minutes. Better yet, VKL Group has plans to add two new luxury boats in addition to the seaplane. And if you are looking for more than a lovely boat ride, this is just the thing for you. Water rides like jet skis, paddleboats, and relaxing by the beach watching the sunset. It doesn’t get better than this on an island! The resort blends the authentic charms of an island with the comfort and efficiency of an international hospitality brand. Decorated with modern interiors, The Hawar Resort is a haven of tranquility with an unobstructed view of the sea from the balcony.

Qatar Airways, A Story of Unmatched Growth Airline’s global network links the region with the rest of the world

J

ust a few decades ago, access to air travel was limited to a very select demographic — specifically those with a higher purchasing power. Over the years, the aviation industry has consistently transformed travel and increased the number of air travellers crisscrossing the globe. In 2013 alone, around three billion passengers took to the skies, according to estimates by the International Air Transport 76 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

Association (IATA), and this trend will continue with analysts predicting that more people will travel by air than ever before. While these statistics are reassuring to airlines worldwide, it also means a highly competitive aviation industry. High-quality, differentiated services and operational efficiency have become critical priorities for airlines looking to maintain or grow their position in the marketplace. Qatar Airways, Qatar’s national carrier, is recognised as an airline that has what it takes to stand out. Since 1997, the award-winning carrier has stood for exemplary services,

and has become the only airline in the region to be awarded a 5-Star rating by Skytrax. Known also for its impeccable safety record, Qatar Airways was the first airline in the world to pass the IATA Operational Safety Audit with 100 per cent compliance in 2003, and has maintained this passing rate in the mandated tests every two years. The airline was recently recognised for its world-class services. In June 2014, Skytrax conferred the ‘Best Middle Eastern Airline’ title on Qatar Airways for the eighth year during the Farnborough Air Show in the UK. The airline was also awarded World’s

Best Business Class for the second straight year, as well as World’s Best Business Class Airline Lounge. In seeking to transform its passenger experience through its hub, Qatar Airways played a key role in development of the state-of-the-art Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, which commenced full operations in May 2014. The new airport promises to be a focal point in Qatar Airways’ journey, and a continuation of the 5-Star experience even for those in transit. While Doha is currently the hub for a large number of international airlines’ passengers, the coming years will see a spike in passenger traffic to Hamad International Airport, one of the most modern, sophisticated, and passengerfriendly airports in the world. This US$15.5 billion project has an initial passenger capacity of 30 million passengers per year, and is scheduled to handle up to 50 million passengers a year when fully complete. Located just four kilometres away from the old Doha Airport, Hamad International Airport also houses more than 100 duty free shops and restaurants, a hotel, a spa, a swimming pool, squash courts alongside a host of other facilities. Interestingly, Hamad International Airport will also go down in history as the first international terminal designed by an airline. A core Qatar Airways ethos is that passenger comfort is its greatest competitive differentiator. Having recently unveiled a premium passengers’ lounge, Al Mourjan Business Lounge, at Hamad International, it spans two levels and provides

multiple dining options for up to 1,000 guests. With distinguished service standards, it has not been too difficult for Qatar Airways to remain the preferred choice for passengers, even in a highly competitive environment. The airline has experienced phenomenal route expansion in the last 17 years, and is flying one of the youngest fleets with more than 130 aircraft. Its global network currently spans over 140 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America, and is supported by a worldwide team of 30,000 people. Recently, Qatar Airways cemented its leadership position by becoming the first regional airline to provide direct-flight connectivity to seven destinations across

the United States of America, three of which were launched in 2014. The airline now has direct flights to Philadelphia, Miami, and Dallas/Fort Worth, in addition to Chicago, New York, Washington DC and Houston. The newest destination on Qatar Airways’ network, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and the surrounding area are home to many Fortune 500 companies, and in addition to being a thriving business hub, the area boasts numerous attractions and activities for leisure travelers such as the

To bring services closer to passengers, Qatar Airways has also stepped into smart application services by introducing last year the Qatar Airways app for smartphones. This app offers multiple services from booking and managing trips to issuing payments – even bringing the check-in process to the palm of your hand. The service mix on the app is consistently reviewed

Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, Fort Worth Opera, and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Looking ahead, Qatar Airways aims to expand globally – in North and South America, Africa, the Asian subcontinent, and also Southeast Asia and Europe. By joining the oneworld Alliance, it was not only the first Gulf airline to join, but it also created a platform that brings the right type of exposure for network expansion. As a member in the alliance of the world’s leading airlines, Qatar Airways collaborates with 14 airlines to consistently deliver a superior, seamless travel experience, with special privileges for frequent flyers, including earning and redeeming miles and points across the entire alliance network.

and upgraded too, the most recent update being the addition of a dedicated ‘Privilege Club’ feature, which enables customers to use the Qcalculator to calculate Qmiles that can be earned or required for redemption, claim any missing Qmiles, or cancel any pending reward bookings. Qatar Airways is clearly at the forefront of redefining its industry today, with a clear focus on innovation and excellence. What has made this all possible is the concentrated and unified team effort, where everyone is focused on the same goals. As the only 5-star carrier in the region, and one of the fastest growing and most highlyacclaimed airlines in the world, Qatar Airways believes that it has all that it takes to grow further and fly higher, even in a crowded sky.

hospitality review – Dubai Rebecca Smith reviews

MELIÁ DUBAI

Are you planning your next trip to Dubai? Or are you looking for an in-expensive but luxury-hotel for your next business trip? If so then we really must recommend the Meliá Dubai.

D

esigned for both business and holiday travellers, the Meliá Dubai features an array of facilities and services that certainly exceeded my expectations. Located in the heart of traditional Bur Dubai, close to the Gold Souq, historic Bastakiya, the Dubai Museum and Dubai Creek, the hotel is perfectly situated, within a short reach to Dubai’s main shopping and commercial districts and only 15kms away from Dubai International Airport. The location couldn’t be more perfect for tourists as you really are situated in the hub of Dubai. On entering the lobby I couldn’t help notice how

stylishly it was decorated. It was warm and welcoming in a simple, non-cluttered Zen like way, unlike the over-the-top and garish décor that I have come to associate with many of Dubai’s five star hotels. The dark panelling and natural lighting within the lobby made my day’s stress float away and made me feel as if I had already been on holiday for a week and not recovering from an early morning flight and five meetings. The personal touch that you receive from the staff makes the Meliá Dubai feel like a boutique hotel and very homely in a trendy sort of way. On entering my suite I was taken aback by just how stylish and spacious the room was. Although the main area could be described as open planned, the lounge was separated from the sleeping area by a half

partition which stored the entertainment system included a flat screen TV (screens facing the bed and living room) and sound system. WiFi was available throughout the hotel, which kept me connected during my stay. Also, the room was stunningly decorated with dark wood panelling and all the modern gadgets and facilities you come to expect from a high-end five star hotel, including the most amazing bathroom and walk in wardrobe. I really didn’t need to leave the room. It was bliss! Amazingly (hehe!), despite my hectic day, I found time to treat myself in their very Zen like YHI Spa which overlooked the rooftop swimming pool and offered panoramic city skyline views. The treatment was extensive and offered an array of services from head to toe that would make anyone float out in a blissful state.

hospitality review – Dubai

Signature, the fine dining restaurant by celebrity chef, Sanjeev Kapoor

In the evening I dined at the awardwining restaurant, Signature by world renowned chef, Sanjeev Kapoor. You always know you’re in for a good meal when most of the tables are already occupied quite early. The head chef personally selected an array of delicious dishes which I savoured with every bite. I will admit that I would never have chosen several dishes myself but once I tasted – I wanted more!

Suite Granduxe at

Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor – Indian Modern Cuisine

Sanjeev Kapoor’s venue at the Meliá Dubai proves why he is considered to be one of the most popular celebrity chefs in Dubai. With its strong, traditional influences, every dish offers authentic Indian specialties with a twist and is open daily for lunch and dinner. The hotel offers two fabulous restaurants, Signature and Azalya which serves an international buffet. There is also a pool bar/lounge serving shisha: Estrellas, Alfonso X which is a sushi & cigar lounge, and Quantum, a sports bar. Basically there’s something on offer to keep the whole family or a business traveller completely satisfied.

Level - Meliá Dubai

The 7th Floor of Meliá Dubai is no ordinary 'level'. The Level is reserved for those who value exclusivity above all – this is where your experience is enhanced to unprecedented heights of refinement. Step-up to an elevated guest experience when staying at The Level's rooms and suites. Well-considered luxuries include a dedicated host and personalised check-in, with a private lounge with fantastic views of the city skyline. Guests staying at The

Level have access to exclusive, superlative services. Overall I was completely awed by the quality of the rooms, the standard of service and the convenience of location. I stayed when the summer packages were on offer and my suite cost the equivalent of a facial in Bahrain and cheaper than the Ibisis at the time. In other words outrageously affordable! About Me Social Media Executive @ VIVA Bahrain

Glued to our smartphones! By James Prabakar Mechanical Engineer – Mobile Apps & Value Added Services Expert

Mohammed Zainal

Having the latest smartphone is not a trend anymore, it has become a need, kind of an addiction in our lives. So, we asked an expert to share his views on just how much smartphones are changing our lives.

Who Manages Who? Humans vs. Smartphones Over the last couple of decades mobile handsets have transformed from just a calling device to a complete power-house workstation. Mobile phones inhabit an integral part of our lives, from helping us wake-up, listening to the latest songs, all the way up to planning our entire day. It’s a fact that people spend more time with their smartphones than PCs or TVs. People have also reduced calling and texting their friends, instead they use Viber or Skype for calls and Whatsapp for texting and sharing multimedia content. Even while travelling, we don’t need to look for a roaming signal. All we need is the hotel lobby’s Wi-Fi connection and we are good to go. The concept of setting-up public Wi-Fi hotspots to deliver free internet is being incorporated in many developed countries especially at the airports. This helps tourists to get all the information they need over the free Wi-Fi. Finding an accommodation and navigating in a foreign land has been made easy thanks to apps like Booking.com & Google maps. In the past, we had to develop and print our holiday pictures, place them in an album and share them with friends whenever we met them. But now, with apps like Facebook & Instagram, we can share our holiday pictures with friends all over the world with just a click of a button. Apps like Youtube, Spotify & Pandora give us access to many audio and video files. This in turn frees-up our devices’ memory and we don’t have the hassle of carrying our music and videos everywhere.

The average lifecycle of the smartphone is 18 months and this trend is decreasing rapidly. Currently, people tend to swap their phones very frequently just to hold the latest gadget in their hands from day-one, which is evident from the long queue in front of Apple stores on an iPhone launch day. This in turn pushes the mobile manufacturers to be more innovative in product development and more creative in marketing. As a result, we are able to see an emergence of many of non-mobile makers like ASUS, Acer and Toshiba entering a market that we would have never thought they would go into. Smartphones help us be more efficient and productive at work and the number of tasks one can accomplish using is rising. So, are smartphones a boom or bane? It totally depends on how we use them in our lives. One of the reasons behind Whatsapp’s popularity is that it is less intrusive, as the message can be checked whenever the user is online so, the best way to use social messengers is to let the messages pile-up and then respond when we are free. This helps us establish a balance between work, personal and social life.

After all, smartphones are the coolest gadget around and who knows, one day they might be the gadget that defines our generation!

Did You Know? 1. Over 100 hours of video are being uploaded to YouTube every minute. 2. Worldwide internet traffic plunged by around 40% as Google services suffered a complete black-out for 5 minutes on 17th August 2013. 3. Over 250 million Nokia 1100 devices were sold, making it the bestselling electrical gadget in history. 4. Earlybird is the most commonly used filter in Instagram. 5. Mobile phone = Telephone + Pager 6. Smart Phone = Mobile Phone + PC + Television + Camera + iPod + PlayStation + Handycam + TomTom

The All-new Boxster GTS & Cayman GTS Now in Bahrain! The Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS have now arrived at Porsche Centre Bahrain, Behbehani Brothers. With powerful, uprated engines, the new models also feature the exceptional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system as standard – the addition further building upon Porsche’s unrivalled legacy of sports car excellence. As the most dynamic form of Porsche models, the extension of the GTS principle sees the Boxster and Cayman raise the standard for superior top-end performance in their respective segments. In the new GTS models, Porsche is implementing the two strongest engines that have ever been used in a production Boxster or Cayman. The flat six-cylinder boxers are based on the 3.4-litre engines of the Boxster S and Cayman S. Thanks to

fine-tuning they deliver 15 hp more power meaning the Boxster GTS now has an output of 330 hp, while the Cayman GTS delivers 340 hp. Nominal torque has also been increased by ten Newton metres – ideal for powerful gear transitions during acceleration. Both mid-engine sports cars are equipped with the Sport Chrono package as standard making it sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, and the Cayman GTS is one-tenth of a second faster. The new roadster is the first Boxster to top the 280 km/h mark, reaching a maximum speed of 281 km/h. The sports coupé is even faster at 285 km/h.

now offers an even greater range of sound with the driver able to activate the sport exhaust system via a switch, or via the Sport Plus button on the centre console. A crucial component is the standard PASM adaptive damping control system with a suspension that is 10 mm lower. The optimally controlled damping improves grip and provides greater driving stability, more comfort, enhanced performance and shorter braking distances. The Boxster GTS is priced at BD26,400 and the Cayman GTS at BD26,800. For your test drive visit the Porsche centre in Sitra or call, Tel. 973 1745 9911

car review Zena Williams reviews the

The 21st Century Volkswagon Beetle Do you want to be a part of the pack or are you more of an individual? For those of you who wonder about or love small cars, this one is for you. This particular Beetle provides a bit of youth with a sun roof for some Vitamin D on the road. The coupe has a very sleek, minimalistic interior providing comfort and class with a leather trim steering wheel as well as ample space. The exterior is needless to say UNIQUE and refreshing. What I found most interesting is that this particular model is so different yet still maintains the classic Beetle qualities. You know it’s a Beetle, but it feels like a rocket ship. Visibility is different inside the beetle, as in all cars each blind spot is different. With the new 2015 model there seems to be a gap of vision behind the right shoulder and this took some getting used to. The most useful feature would have to be park assist, it provided an edge and I was also able to avoid damaging the car. Cruising along was quite interesting as this car was quite the head turner, could it be because the Beetle smiles?

“If you are a speed racer then you can accelerate past traffic from 0-100 in 7.5 seconds.” The Technical:

On the technical side of this model its output is 147 kW(210bhp). If you are a speed racer then you can accelerate past traffic from 0-100 in 7.5 seconds. If you aren’t, you always have the option and 210 horse power backing you up. Amenities Available (but may not be standard): • Dual clutch gearbox DSG • Radio/Navigation System • Leather covered multifunction steering wheel Behbehani Volkswagen’s all-inclusive value package features three years free service with up to 45,000kms, three years roadside

assist, five years warranty with unlimited mileage and twelve years warranty against rust perforation. Customers can also benefit from a very low interest rate of only 2.5%. Why choose the 2015 Beetle? If you are someone who is in the market for a reliable plus customizable car, that has great power, speed, and agility and who doesn’t mind being wonderfully different, then smile back at the beetle. This vehicle is certainly well worth the time and effort to visit Behbehani Volkswagen showroom in Sitra to feel for yourself. Taste Life! John Ridley goes green.

John R Ridley

W

hether I’m in Bahrain, Italy, or the UK, open my refrigerator and you can be sure to find at least one jar of fresh, brightly coloured, green pesto.

lacuocaciccia.com

Pesto is, for me, a staple ingredient, used in marinades for chicken, mixed with plain buttered pasta, or as the basis for a dressed salad of green leaves, fresh mozzarella, and sliced tomatoes. Originating in Italy, the ingredients vary from region to region, reflecting local agriculture and produce; the pesto with which most of us are familiar is made with basil, salt, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, pine nuts, and grated Parmigiano cheese. In Provence, where it is known as pistou, it is made with just olive oil, basil, and garlic; elsewhere, almonds may be used instead of pine nuts, or mint leaves mixed with the basil; in Sicily, sun dried tomatoes are added. Basil grows well in most gardens, and if kept watered, thrives in the heat. Throughout the summer and autumn months I always try to have basil growing, either outdoors in the hot sun, or in the kitchen; but juggling my time between three countries can make this difficult. Stems of leaves should be picked frequently, allowing fresh shoots to grow; I leave about 1/3 of the plant growing; unused

114 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2014

“Basil grows well in most gardens, and if kept watered, thrives in the heat.” stems will keep fresh for a few days in a glass of water - don’t refrigerate. Pesto should be made with that most primitive of kitchen tools, the pestle and mortar, from which the word “pesto” is derived. By pounding the ingredients together, the flavours are absorbed; whereas the spinning and cutting of a food processor can heat up the basil leaves and garlic, leaving a bitter taste.

Ingredients:

2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 to 3 large handfuls fresh basil leaves, leaves picked from the steams and roughly chopped 10 to 15 fresh flat-leaf parsley sprigs optional 1 handful pine nuts, very lightly toasted 1 good handful Parmigiano cheese - freshly grated 120ml extra virgin olive oil 1 small squeeze lemon juice - optional Freshly ground sea salt and black pepper to taste Don’t be tempted to use lower cost, Chinese pine nuts; they often have a mild metallic flavour.

Directions:

Using a pestle and mortar pound the garlic, basil leaves, parsley, and pinch of salt until a thick green sauce forms.

Add the pine nuts, and continue pounding until the ingredients are well combined. Pour into a large bowl, add the parmesan cheese, stir gently whilst gradually adding the olive oil - just sufficient to bind the ingredients and form a thick paste. Add a squeeze of lemon, and season to taste. Pour into a glass jar or other container, top with a thin layer of olive oil to prevent the surface from discolouring. Cover tightly and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. There are many variations; mint, almonds, or cashews can be used alongside the basil and pine nuts; try other herbs too, flat leaf parsley, carrot tops, coriander, even pea shoots. During the winter months we all need reminding of hot summer days; pesto is easily frozen - pour into an ice cube tray and place in the freezer; once frozen, the cubes can be stored in a resealable plastic freezer bag. With strong enough willpower, frozen pesto should last up to 3 months. John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, writer and broadcaster. Visit his web site at www.johnridley.nu

KLUB 360° GET’S A MAKEOVER! Review by Melissa Nazareth

The robot at Klub 360°

L

ast month, I had my dose of clubbing and I must say I’m good for another 6 months (at least!). Yes, I’m not a party animal but despite that my visit to the renovated Klub 360°, at Elite Crystal Hotel in Juffair was nothing short of fun. Though the club has a dance floor which is always crowded with the wild ones, it is a fine partying destination even for those who want to enjoy some good music whilst sipping on their cocktails and mocktails. Speaking of dance floor, they’ve re-floored the whole club and installed new Italian marble bar top shipped in from Italy. Moreover there are other new elements like the Yo-Yo lights shipped in from Las Vegas; Klub 360° is the first venue in the Middle East to have these lights installed. There are also new LED-lit drinks menus and bill folders, and an array of new lighting and sound equipment on the dance floor. A fascinating dancing robot concept, unique to clubs in Bahrain takes techno music to another level.

“Moreover there are other new elements like the Yo-Yo lights shipped in from Las Vegas; Klub 360° is the first venue in the Middle East to have these lights installed.” Party Like a VIP…

…in Klub360’s unique VIP space. Prior to the club’s renovation, VIP guests could sit at tables reserved for them but they had to go to the bar if a waitress was not available or even join a very busy dance floor if they wanted to break a leg. Now, there is a motion-sensitive LED dance floor installed for the VIPs. There is also a dedicated bottle bar exclusively for the four VIP tables. So there is no reason to leave the area (except when you want to visit the rest room, of course!). Electrical curtains that open and close via remote add to the privacy. All this on a raised platform overlooking the whole club and DJ! The servers and bar tenders at Klub 360° are very hospitable and offer premium service. They even have new uniforms now, so you can see that this

renovation trickles down to the tiniest detail! Don’t forget to meet up with Rick Costa, the Club Manager when you drop by, a thorough gentleman, very passionate about his job. Not only is he a pleasure to hang out with but also has over 17 years experience in running clubs around the world in cities such as London, New York, Miami, Ibiza, Dubai and now Bahrain. The club’s website is also being revamped while you’re reading this review. All said and done, if you’re looking at a classy place, with a decent crowd to enjoy a night out with friends, Klub 360° is where you need to be! For bookings call, Tel. +973 3336 0300

Avril Ramona Lavigne is a singer and songwriter. She had appeared on stage with Shania Twain by the age of 15 and had already signed a two-album recording contract by the age of 16. Lavigne’s father named her Avril, after the month of April in French; though the artist celebrates her birthday on 27th September.

You’re ready to fight for power and success. However, others are reluctant in your efforts. This may be the time to have authorities involved, rather than challenge anyone.

Because of the Libran pause, the Gemini feels disconnected from everything. You will find that your soul feels detached and people are more distant. Don’t fear.

Cancer

Things to know Taxis

Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware! Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
