The Weather Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland’s cool oceanic climate is quite mild for its latitude. The coldest month is January when the average temperature is -1°C. Lowland daytime temperatures during June to August range between 12-15°C, but are cooler in May and September. Iceland can be windy at any time of year and the wind chill factor can make temperatures seem very much cooler. This has influenced our clothing list suggestions which we hope you will find useful. Recommended clothing and kit list The key to enjoying a trip to Iceland is to make sure that you remain warm and dry at all times! Even if it rains… Swimming suit (if doing the Blue Lagoon on arrival these should be in your hand luggage) Towel Walking boots (they should have a strong grip to cope with the conditions which may be muddy, icy, or loose moraine/ground) Warm socks (at least 2 – 3 pairs depending on the duration) Layers of clothing thermal t shirts, long sleeved t shirts, jumpers, fleece. The key is to be able to put layers on if cold, and take them off if warm. Long Johns if you are going in the winter months they can be very useful to keep warm Waterproof outer clothing It is essential to have waterproof jacket and some waterproof over-trousers (sports ones are fine). A thick warm jacket is ok but it must be waterproof. Trousers warm trousers or with long johns underneath– not jeans in case it rains, as these act like blotting paper and will make you cold. Keep these for indoors where it is warm and dry! It is essential to have a couple of changes of clothing in case you get wet. Warm hat and gloves Sunglasses, suncream, (it can be very sunny too!) A day sack for your field equipment if doing field studies, and your lunch and other bits and pieces. Indoors The accommodation is warm and comfortable so normal clothes and trainers for inside Field Study Equipment as determined by the school/college (see separate suggested list) Important Notes If travellers wear contact lenses we recommend bringing a spare pair of glasses as dusty conditions may make lenses very uncomfortable Personal Items All students are responsible for their own personal items and we do not recommend bringing valuable items. Re the Use of ipods and mp3 players, if the school permits these to be taken, are not to be used outside in the “field” for safety reasons ie not hearing instructions. The school is to determine their rules according to the school’s individual policy. H:\LIVING PLANET\Admin\05 - Deposit received\Clothing List Iceland 22May08.doc
