As a Burlington Magazine contributor, readers are accustomed to reading my articles about real estate, and I'll definitely get back to that in future articles. Because of the troubling times we are all facing right now, I'd instead like to shine a light on the work of a really important organization here in Burlington: Allied Churches of Almance County (ACAC).
ACAC is a vital part of our county and during this time even helped renters of properties I manage when they struggled to make rent. To quote directly from their website, "The mission of ACAC is to prevent and end homelessness and food insecurity through providing direct service and lead ership in collaborative community efforts." ACAC also operates an emergency shelter; they offer job and education related ser vices, meals and emergency food at their
Community Kitchen, “Joe's Diner,” where everyone in our community is welcome! You might even see one of our city council members enjoying a meal here.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with and getting to know the leadership team at ACAC. This team models strength, creativity and constructive cohesion. They operate with a dedication that keeps their mission alive and strong. Jai Baker, at the top as the director, will be the first to tell you that without the love and hard work of his team, they would not be the community service center that they’ve become — AND without the support of the community, Allied Churches would not have the resources to continue doing the wonderful, important work they do.
Please visit them on Facebook or visit their website at alliedchurches.org. If you or someone you know could use their help, just give them a call at (336) 229-0881 On both their Facebook page and website, you'll also see what you can do to donate your time, money and/or necessary items, if you’re able. This is very much a time for us all to pull together and ACAC sets a beautiful example of that.

WHAT IS DIY ORTHODONTICS AND IS IT SAFE? DIY is shorthand for "do-it-yourself," meaning that the average person can do it.
Do-It-Yourself topics are practically limitless. With the advent of YouTube and easy internet access, we can find out how to do most anything with the click of a mouse. Along with this craze of doing things ourselves, whether to save money or take pride in doing something ourselves, it's important to use common sense when it comes to our healthcare. We of course want to be our own best advocate and ask our medical professionals good questions, get second opinions when our decisions require deeper consideration, etc. While the internet can be a fantastic resource, and DIY services and tutorials can be handy, when it comes to our health, dental or otherwise, it's important to err on the side of caution when self-treating.
WHAT ABOUT DIY TOOTH ALIGNMENT? Moving teeth around without the expertise and proper equipment provided through a dentist could create a host of complications, especially if the patient turns out to have gum disease, cavities, jaw problems or many other undiagnosed issues prior to attempting to realign teeth. Orthodontic treatment, if administered incorrectly, could even cause some of those same problems. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CONSIDERING ANY KIND OF DIY DENTAL TREATMENT • The American Dental Association (ADA) and member dentists across the country are dedicated to the health & safety of the patients they serve • ADA policies oppose Do-It-Yourself dental care, as it is concerned about potential for irreversible harm to patients • The ADA and member dentists across the country are dedicated to the health and safety of the patients they serve
You can find more information on MouthHealthy.org, the ADA’s website for the public, and at MouthHealthy.org/DIYdentistry.
For the best, most effective, safe and hygienic approaches to dental care, seek out your local dentist. Our teeth (and smiles) are a very important part of who we are and even a part of our self-esteem. Why take chances with your smile? A professional exam, inclusive of X-rays, will give you the tools you need to make a safe, educated decision about any dental concern.
THE DOS & DON'TS OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLIP-FLOPS
The temperature is rising, which means you’re ready to start wearing your favorite spring and summer footwear: Flip-flops!
Whether you are digging them out of the back of your closet or hitting the mall in search of a new pair, keep in mind the following tips when it comes to making sure your flip-flops aren’t a huge flop:
DO shop for a flip-flop made of highquality, soft leather. Leather minimizes the potential for blisters and other types of irritation.
DO gently bend the flip-flop from end to end, ensuring it bends at the ball of the foot. Shoes of any kind should never fold in half.
DO ensure that your foot doesn't hang off of the edge of the flip-flop.
DO wear a sturdy pair of flip-flops when walking around a public pool, at the beach, in hotel rooms and in locker room areas. Walking barefoot can expose foot soles to plantar warts and athlete's foot.
DON'T re-wear flip-flops year after year. Inspect older pairs for wear. If they show signs of severe wear, discard them.
DON'T ignore irritation between toes, where the toe thong fits. This can lead to blisters and possible infections.
DON'T wear flip-flops while walking long distances. Even the sturdiest flip-flops offer little in terms of shock absorption and arch support.
DON'T do yard work while wearing flip-flops. Always wear a shoe that fully protects feet when doing outside activities such as mowing the lawn or using a weed-eater.
DON'T play sports in flip-flops. This practice can lead to twisting of the foot or ankle, as well as sprains and breaks.
