Open day at Del Mar 2023 Aimee Fuller will once again be a Star at Opening Day

traditionally wear pink shades to honor cancer survivors, and Churchill Downs hosts a Survivor’s Parade with breast and ovarian cancer survivors just before the race.

The fashionable Jessica ad director for InTouch, Life & Style, and Us Weekly, chose this custom-dyed cascading floral headpiece for the 2023 derby. She and Aimee collaborated for months to get just the look she wanted.

Large plumes of feathers on wide-brimmed hats were much in demand again this season. Janine Wald chose a pink and green Aimee Fuller hat for the derby this year.

Lightweight fascinators can be an easy option for ladies who wish to avoid a large hat, but still want to bring the drama. a vision of a yellow butterfly cascade to match her derby dress. This is the final product from Aimee’s studio, which complemented Katrinka’s ensemble and wowed the crowds.

There are enough excellent steakhouses in San Diego that waiting hours for a seat at Born and Raised is, admittedly, a little silly. Maybe it’s the Great Gatsby vibe. Or the trippy mirrored bathroom. But that doesn’t explain why we’ll join similar queues for a speakeasy, Raised By Wolves at West eld UTC in La Jolla or a hi- music bar, Part time Lover, in North Park. e common thread, of course, is the group that owns them: Consortium Holdings, the company behind 19 of San Diego’s most popular restaurants and bars. Last year, CH purchased the Lafayette Hotel & Swim Club and set about revamping the iconic building from top to bottom. It’s set to reopen its doors next week and hotel guests and locals can line up at seven fresh food and drink establishments, including a lobby bar & cafe, a classic diner, a luxurious Parisian-style restaurant, a live music venue, an old-school bowling alley, a swanky new pool bar, an intimate chef’s table dining experience, and an Oaxacan-inspired eatery & mezcal bar.

Luckily I belong to the groups’ member only private club, e Reading Room, and was able to preview the so opening of the Lafayette hotel and Swim Club this weekend.

When CH Projects formally shut down the Lafayette Hotel, the project was so complex, the founders and a few top executives, such as Clyde pictured below moved into the vacant hotel to better oversee its transformation. e company’s goal is to return the Lafayette to its heyday of the late 40s and 50s when it hosted notable guests like Ava Gardner, Bob Hope, Lana Turner, and Bing Crosby and help to reestablish the historic hotel as a destination entertainment hub for visitors and locals alike.

Here’s an early taste of what to look forward to: e Lafayette’s pool has always been the focal point of the property, and it will soon receive the addition of a luxe new pool bar. Visitors will be transported to the Amal coast with a new menu of Italian-in uenced cocktails and small bites, as well as a garden-like ambiance. Access to this area will not be limited to hotel guests, as day passes and swim club memberships will be available for purchase.

Beginners Diner- this replaced Hope46 and will be open 24 hours a day. A place where people can eat pie and fries for breakfast or pancakes for dinner, its menu will have modernized takes on greasy spoon favorites.

Quixote- Slotting into the former Red Fox Room space, and inspired by how the original steakhouse was assembled from parts of an antique English inn, this new restaurant will be built with parts salvaged from a 110-year-old Mexican church, with stained glass and an agave bar fashioned from the old church altar. Serving Oaxacan cuisine, including various types of mole and memelas, or masa cakes, Quixote will also have a wood- red hearth oven for roasting meats.

Gutter-Taking cues from the climactic last scene of ere Will Be Blood, set in a home bowling alley, this vintage bowling hall and game room will include two regulation bowling lanes, a custom-made gravity-fed ball return system, and a bar serving classic cocktails like Manhattans made with barrel-aged spirits.

Mississippi Room- e scene in the rst Top Gun movie where Tom Cruise serenaded a woman by singing “You’ve Lost at Loving Feeling” was shot at the Lafayette in this event space, which will now host live shows curated by the Casbah’s Tim Mays and features a bar stocked with rare rums sourced by bar legend Paul McGee, who is also putting together the mini bar set-up for each of the hotel’s 141 rooms.

Such an exciting playground for the adults, I am looking forward to visiting again very soon, see you there at Gutter with our bowling shoes and Tequila Negroni. Cheers!
