EASTMAN KODAK emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in early September after the Rochesterbased company’s initial filing in January 2012. “Next we move on to emergence as a technology leader serving large and growing commercial imaging markets – such as commercial printing, packaging, functional printing and professional services – with a leaner structure and a stronger balance sheet,” stated Antonio Perez, Chairman and CEO, who expects to step down from his current position within a year. Among a series of initiatives, Kodak’s restructuring included exiting the consumer inkjet printer business, exiting the consumer digital camera sector and selling digital imaging patents for US$525 million. Kodak’s Document Imaging and Personalized Imaging businesses became property of the U.K. Kodak Pension Plan , alleviating about $2.8 billion of claims as the company’s largest creditor.

STEPHAN PLENZ of Heidelberg’s Management Board congratulates Tan Shun Rong, General Manager of YangJiang Hondai Paper Products Co., for his September purchase of the 1,000th press produced by Heidelberg at its Qingpu, China, plant, which began operations seven years ago. YangJiang Hondai Paper, a packaging printer located in the western part of Guangdong province, purchased a Speedmaster CD 102. The printing company employs around 170 people. PROFECTA LABELS of St-Hubert, Quebec, purchased a Nilpeter FB-3300 13-inch UV flexo press. Founded in 1992, the company has grown to become one of Quebec’s larger label producers, serving Canada and the United States. The Nilpeter FB-3300 has a maximum web speed of 750 linear feet per minute. Profecta’s press has a register control system designed to handle complex printing applications using process colours or PMS with white and foil effects. In April of 2012, during Profecta’s 20th year in operation, the company installed an HP Indigo WS6600 web-fed press. 6 • PRINTACTION • OCTOBER 2013

QUARK launched Version 10 of its QuarkXPress featuring a substantial revision of the page-layout software’s program code, according to the company, resulting in more performance and better on-screen fidelity on modern computer hardware. QuarkXPress 10 is a native Cocoa application leveraging OS X features, while also providing HiDPI and Retina Display Support. The new Quark Xenon Graphics Engine is designed to render rich PDFs, Photoshop and TIFF images, using its Adaptive Resolution feature for onscreen resolution. QuarkXPress 10 continues to support ePub and Kindle, as well as out-ofthe-box HTML5 authoring for App Studio and East Asian typography (see PrintAction, September 2013).

CARSTEN KNUDSEN, President and CEO of Esko in Ghent, Belgium, moved to purchase CAPE Systems, which develops software for packaging design, pallet load optimization and supply chain profitability. Details of the purchase have not been released. “Esko is continually evolving from a prepress solution provider to an end-to-end supplier in the packaging world,” stated Knudsen. “It is our strategy to improve and drive profitability, utilization and failsafe solutions for our customers all the way from design to the point of sale.” Esko states there are close links between ArtiosCAD, Esko’s structural package design software, and CAPE PACK, which uses ArtiosCAD data for calculation and simulations within the software. PAUL FILIPPELLI becomes Drytac Canada’s National Sales Manager, marking the company’s second management hire over the past few weeks since purchasing Multi-Tac Inc. at the beginning of July 2013. Previously employed with Multi-Tac as Vice President of Sales, Filippelli’s expertise is in industrial and specialty label coatings, as well as custom and contract coatings for the graphic and sign industry. In August, Drytac Canada named Paul Vanderweide as Operations Manager for the company’s facilities in Concord and Brampton, Ontario. He previously served as President of Macula Technik Inc. PACKAGING CORPORATION OF AMERICA (PCA) of Illinois moved to acquire all outstanding common shares of Boise Inc. for an aggregate transaction value of US$1.995 billion, including US$714 million of Boise’s outstanding debt. The combined companies generated $5.5 billion in sales and $879 million in EBITDA (excluding special items) in the last 12 months ended June 30, 2013. PCA’s containerboard capacity will increase to 3.7 million tons from its current level of 2.6 million tons (a 42 percent increase). In addition to increasing the company’s presence into the Pacific Northwest, PCA’s corrugated products volume will increase by about 30 percent as a result of the acquisition. POSTMEDIA NETWORK plans to sell two of its real estate holdings, responsible for the production of three of its newspapers: the Calgary Herald, Vancouver Province and Vancouver Sun. The Calgary Herald is to be produced at TC Transcontinental beginning November 2013. Postmedia states it has invited union representatives in Vancouver to look at alternatives for producing the Vancouver papers. A CBC report indicates one option, beyond further outsourcing to Transcontinental, for Vancouver is the opening of a new plant, but only if costs can be cut by upwards of 70 to 75 percent. Postmedia last August announced the closure of its Edmonton Eastgate plant producing the Edmonton Journal, with printing outsourced to nearby Great West newspapers.

EPSON, the imaging industry’s long-standing dominant force behind piezoelectric head development, unveiled PrecisionCore as its next-generation inkjet printing technology. Epson combined its years of technical expertise with recent breakthroughs in piezo material and high-precision Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) manufacturing to create its new PrecisionCore print chip, which can be deployed across a range of sectors from industrial and commercial printing to office products. “PrecisionCore represents a leap forward in printing performance,” said Minoru Usui, Epson’s global President. “We continue to deliver outstanding quality thanks to superior dot control, and have introduced a new system to ensure reliability. At the same time, scalability allows us to fully leverage our historical strengths of ink flexibility and printhead durability.” In conjunction with the PrecisionCore announcement, Epson at Labelexpo in Brussels demonstrated new products using the technology, including SurePress L-6034V and L-6034VW, which are also Epson’s first inkjet label presses that use UV-cure ink.

Flat Top Fidelity he past couple of years have brought rapid development and implementation of new flexographic technologies, which make the flexo world a pretty exciting place to be today. Most of these technologies involve moves toward much higher quality – high fidelity – print, as well as drastic improvements in production efficiencies. The current evolution of improved flexography technology really started with the sector’s plate manufacturers. Kodak, historically not associated with flexography, developed the first reliable “flat top dot” platemaking system, branded as Flexcel, and others soon followed with various systems to produce the flat top dot, including MacDermid with LUX, DuPont with Cyrel DSP, and Asahi. Flat top dots alone, however, are not going to do anything for the flexo printer. The push to higher fidelity in flexo also required a technology evolution in plate processing, anilox rolls, inks and prepress software, as well as the ability and patience for these advances to ultimately work together. It also takes teamwork among the various suppliers and a commitment from the print manager to calibrate and measure, as Bob Szoke spoke of in PrintAction’s May 2013 article called Flexo Finesse.

Repeatable dots and solid density

When thinking about flat top dots, it is important to remember that we are talking about raised image or relief printing, in which the dot is carved out from the plate in platemaking. The typical digital flexo platemaking process produces a tapered bullet-shaped dot on the flexo plate. Because of the taper, the dot shape can easily vary with print pressure and –

in the extreme – the dot can actually bend causing a slur instead of roundish dot. Even at constant print pressure, the dot size can grow over the length of the run as the dot wears down. Also, the bullet-shape head of the dot has a propensity to transfer uneven amounts of ink (often referred to as the ink pile) from the anilox on each revolution of the plate cylinder. offset, opening up some new market options to explore. However, the flexo printer who is willing to go through the transition to high fidelity will gain much more than a drastic improvement in print quality. The payback of improved efficiency can be significant. The much larger colour gamut achievable (larger than offset printing) means fewer spot colours required in a typical flexo job. In turn, this results in a number of advantages, including: Fewer plates, fewer ink colours, less make-ready time, lower labour costs, faster job changeovers, improved press capacity, lower ink inventory, less ink consumption and, collectively, lower production costs. It also means fewer print stations required to produce a job. The owner of a multistation press can employ the unused stations for special effects such as coatings, cold foil transfer, and embossing. It also means the next time they buy a press, fewer print stations will be required. Furthermore, these techniques will actually make older equipment print better. Many older presses, 10 or more years old, which are generally owned by the smaller printers, are producing remarkable work in the Canadian market. Single pass and servo driven

In the past, single-pass printing was an accepted advantage of flexography in the press’ ability to print, coat, foil stamp, emboss, invert, separate webs for internal print, die-cut, sheet and add other special effects – not only all on one machine, but also with few operators. It is still true in many cases. The goal of single-pass printing has been something the major sheetfed press manufacturers have been working on for a long time. With today’s flexo, however, as the efficiencies outlined above drive up press run speeds, an imbalance is beginning to show between the speed of printing and slower speeds for some finishing processes. Leveraging current servo-motor technologies, it becomes a much easier process to remove the web from a press and re-insert it, immediately in register, onto an offline finishing machine. These finishing machines are loosely based on the well-established offline inspection systems demanded by the pharmaceutical industry for 100 percent inspection of their labels. Offline machines operate at a much lower cost (as low as 20 percent of press costs) and reduced labour costs compared to modern speed flexo presses. Current technologies allow for hot/cold foil stamping, coating, embossing, die cutting, variable printing and inspection to be completed offline, thereby, opening up press capacities for other work. There are other efficiencies to be gained by going offline especially with material savings. One example is offline foil stamping, where a servo-driven machine can be configured to use exactly the width of foil required for the stamped image rather than utlilizing a foil stream at full print width. The material savings on foil stamping material is generally

enough to produce a payback of less than one year on the machine. In many cases, an offline machine can produce decorative effects and even security systems that are simply not possible on press. With these new technologies, and a packaging market that is still growing, albeit modestly, today’s flexo printer is well positioned to meet and beat many challenges from other print technologies. While

digital printing – both toner- and inkjetbased – is taking a good run at the shortrun label market and even the mid-web carton market, flexo is still a very versatile process that can produce unique print products, especially in the packaging specialties arena. Adobe PDF Print Engine 3 Adobe launched PDF Print Engine 3 based on its new scalable Mercury RIP architecture, which is engineered to better drive variable-data to printing presses. It supports continuously streamed PDF and PDF/VT in high-volume workflows for applications like HVTO and transpromotional. Described by Adobe as the industry’s fastest rendering technology, PDF Print Engine 3 can concurrently load balance available work across multiple presses. Fujifilm XMF 5.5 is the first workflow to deploy the Mercury RIP. PDF Print Engine was first launched in 2006 and Adobe claims there are now more than 90,000 units in production worldwide.

Air Motion Systems XP5 Air Motion Systems (AMS) highlighted its XP5 UV LED curing system, which the company claims can generate the industry’s highest radiant energy intensity at meaningful working distances from a UV LED curing lamp module. XP Series LED-curing process provides for instant, low energy, heat-less drying at top-end press speeds. Most types of conventional presses, according to AMS, can be upgraded with an XP5 system in the field. LED systems from AMS can be deployed as standalone curing applications or combined with high efficiency standard UV ARC lamp modules – known as CLED Titanium UV modules.

Allen Datagraph AXXIS HS Allen Datagraph’s iTech AXXIS HS is described as a “turnkey table-top” technology to print and finish labels. The system – featuring Wasatch SoftRIP – is comprised of iTech AXXIS HS, which is a rollfed CMYK print engine based on LED toner, and the iTech AXXIS HS finisher, which laminates, integrates die-less cutting, and then strips, slits and rewinds to finished rolls of labels. The 8.5-inch-wide format printer produces 1,200 x 600 dpi at speeds of up to 30 feet per minute. It does not require a top coating to run subC

strates and can be applied as a standalone machine for pre-die cut label work. Print to cut registration is accomplished via the SMARTMark Optical Registration System, using the Allen DirectCut plug-in to Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw for vector-based die lines. The digital finisher also slits and strips the waste matrix for machine or hand application of labels.

Avanti Slingshot Avanti Computer Systems launched Slingshot, which the Toronto company describes as its next-generation Print Management Information System (MIS). Avanti’s new Slingshot product, which can be Cloud-based or hosted on-site, was in development for over three years and built from the ground-up to handle multiple lines of business, including large-format inkjet, toner and offset lithography, mailing and fulfillment workflows, as well as creative, marketing and data management services from one platform. Slingshot incorporates business intelligence (CRM, dashboards and reporting), production planning (estimating, imposition, automated purchasing, sales orders, inventory management and scheduling), warehousing, shipping and billing. Avanti Slingshot ships with a QuickStart Database, an Estimating Standards Library, and migration and import tools, which, as Avanti explains, can greatly reduce the level of effort to install an MIS.

Bell + Howell Criterion Apex Bell + Howell highlighted its Criterion APEX sorter which can be configured as a multi-line optical character reader (MLOCR) or barcode reader. Designed to handle a range of letter mail, the Apex sorter processes mail in uniform batches or mixed with various types and sizes by applying constant gap and pitch control to every mail-piece. Other options for the Apex sorter include a doubles detector, a metal detector, height detector, indicia detector, thickness detector, liner-less inline high-speed labeler, and an extended magazine.

Bourg debuted the Booklet Maker ExPress, based on the existing BM-e Booklet Maker and BCM-e Bleed Crease Module, to operate with the right-to-left paper path and duplex 2-up format of HP Indigo 7000 presses. The company claims ExPress as the first in-line booklet making system available for Indigo presses. The inline booklet maker is designed to operate 24/7 at the full-rated speed of the HP Indigo 7000.

Epson SureColor F2000 Epson introduced two new direct-to-garment systems, under the SureColor F2000 Series banner, for imaging on products like t-shirts, hoodies, jackets and tote bags. The systems are to be made available in Canada beginning January 2014. The SureColor F2000 Standard Edition (CMYK-only) and the SureColor F2000 White Edition (for printing on dark or colour fabrics) can print on garments ranging from 100 percent cotton to 50/50 fabric blends. Both systems have a listed MSRP of $19,995 in the United States. The SureColor F2000 line leverages Epson’s UltraChrome DG ink technology, which the company describes as an all new, garment ink formulation developed specifically for its MicroPiezo TFP print heads. UltraChrome DG is a waterbased pigment ink, while the TFP oneinch-wide print-heads feature 360 nozzles per colour.

Global Graphics Harlequin MultiRIP 10 Global Graphics launched the latest version of its Harlequin RIP and also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the system at PRINT 13. The new RIP, using a feature called Harlequin Parallel Pages, takes advantage of multi-threaded parallel processing and a 64-bit operating environment to speed the process up to 1.3 times faster than previous versions by interpreting one page while it is still rendering the previous one. Harlequin VariData accelerates the processing time of PDF/VT and PDF files containing variable data, by using a unique method of intelligently recognizing repeated content.

Goss ContiVision Goss launched its ContiVision web break analysis system for printers to identify the precise cause of web breaks and to help prevent web break recurrences. The system also provides evidence for achieving paper flaws compensation. Receiving up to 80 signals from cameras and sensors, ContiVision monitors, measures and analyzes forces interacting with the paper web throughout production. Immediately on detecting the small changes in web tension that signal a web break, it correlates all data to determine crucial factors like the precise time and location of a web break, process circumstances, and variations in paper quality. ContiVision algorithms consider the data in relation to approximately 300 possible system failures to establish the most likely cause, providing validation of the conclusion and automatically generating a report.

Esko highlighted its recent commercial release (April 2013) of Full HD Flexo, which the company describes as technology that can set a new quality standard in flexography. The technology – building on Esko’s existing HD Flexo product line – is designed to produce a combination of smooth highlight printing and gravure-like solid ink densities. KBA highlighted its progress with the piezo inkjet-based RotaJET 76 being developed at its main factory in Wßrzburg, Germany. The RotaJET 76 has a maximum web speed of 150 metres (500 feet) per minute with a 781-millimetre-wide (30.7-inches) web. KBA explains the RotaJET 76’s two arrays of 56 printing heads that arch over the two large central impression cylinders can be moved aside for maintenance purposes. KBA also discussed its recently introduced (January 2013) Rapida 164, a format VIIIb (120.5 x 164 cm) press. HP highlighted new – backwards compatible – enhancement packages for its Indigo 5600, 7600 and WS6600 press series. The HP Indigo 7600 Enhancement Package, with features the company states can increase press uptime by around 10 percent, is expected to ship in October 2013. It includes HP Indigo Print Care 2.0, a tool set for on-press diagnostic and remote support, while the new Automatic Alert Agent helps press operators resolve print quality issues. The 7600 package also includes access to a new set of consumables, such as a new charge roller, which HP claims to carry five times the lifespan of the current version. The HP Indigo 5600 press can be fitted with a new Ultra Thick Substrate Kit to print up to 600-micron (24-mil) on opaque PVC materials.

The AFF 602 is a two-bin feeder designed to take pre-collated sets directly from the printed engine without the need to trim the job in a guillotine prior to booklet making. The system’s large capacity bins provide a loading capacity of up to 600 mm. Covers that have been printed on another device, or have been coated or laminated, can be placed into one of the bins and merged with the pre-collated sets as part of the run. The new systems can be combined with the Morgana Squarefold unit to provide finished squared spine booklets. The company also highlighted its recently introduced Morgana DigiBook 150 as a PUR binder designed for toner production. QuadTech Inspection System QuadTech highlighted its self-named Inspection System designed to inspect at any resolution on a range of substrate surfaces on any web width, regardless if the press is gravure, sheetfed and web offset, flexo, toner or inkjet. It is based on customer-defined prepress targets and uses in-line spectral data from QuadTech’s SpectralCam, ink formulation data from X-Rite and ink dispensing data from third-party suppliers. The system calculates L*a*b*, ΔE and ΔDensity at full press speeds, correcting colorimetric and density deviations from predetermined targets. The Inspection System’s on-board software enables benchmarking through Golden Template Comparison.

Ricoh demonstrated its new Pro 8100s Series of monochrome presses, which includes three models running at 95, 110, and 135 pages per minute, while hitting 1,200 x 4,800-dpi resolution. To increase the range of supported substrates, the Ricoh Pro 8100s Series features an intermediate-belt transfer system that can handle paper weights between 40 to 300 gsm, as well as textured or coated stocks on sizes up to 13 x 19 inches. Ricoh also highlighted the recently introduced Pro C5100S and Pro 5110S as small-footprint, entry-level production systems with the ability to print and copy up to 65 ppm and 80 ppm, respectively. Ricoh also showcased the InfoPrint 5000 colour inkjet system, which recently surpassed the 40-billion impres-

sion milestone worldwide, and its new onthe-fly auto-splicing capability. Ricoh also introduced TotalFlow 2.0 and its new 1to1Create Marketing Services, which is a Cloud-based subscription service to help print providers offer multichannel, multitouch marketing campaigns.

RISO ComColor 9150 RISO introduced its new ComColor 9150 and 7150 printers, which the company describes as being part of “The industry’s first complete cut-sheet In-line Print-toMail Solution.” It is comprised of a ComColor 9150 or 7150 and a new Wrapping Envelope Finisher that automatically addresses, folds, envelopes, and seals printed documents into ready-to-mail completed jobs. The RISO Wrapping Envelope Finisher can produce up to 2,200 completed pieces of mail every hour.

Scodix Ultra Scodix debuted its new Ultra press capable of producing 1,250 B2+ (21 x 31-inch) size sheets per hour. The Ultra, which lays down its gloss polymer at a resolution of 2,540 x 450 dpi, features Scodix RSP Technology, which the company describes as pinpoint enhancement positioning and registration through the use of multiple CCD cameras. The new system also employs Scodix 99 GU (the highest level of gloss units attainable for printed materials) and allows for variable polymer thickness – in a single pass. The Ultra can process material weights from six to 30 points (135 to 675 gsm) and can print on materials as thick at 700 microns (0.7 mm). The machine can lay down as much as 250 microns of material in Braille mode and can also operate two trays simultaneously.

Standard Horizon BQ-280PUR Standard Horizon highlighted the Horizon BQ-280PUR, first introduced in February 2013, as a single-clamp PUR perfect binding system aimed at short-run toner production, such as books. The BQ280PUR can be operated by a single person and includes a sensor-activated caliper system for book block measurement. The machine provides what Standard describes as fully automated set-up (carriage clamp, milling, glue tank, nipping, and cover feeder), an elevator delivery system, and special processing for extended spine length up to 15.5 inches. The BQ-280PUR reaches production speeds of up to 400 books per hour.

Ultimate Impostrip OnDemand Ultimate Technographics showcased JDF connectivity with new extensions into Version 8.1 of its Impostrip OnDemand Automation software. The new extensions are said to help printers link the imposition to their MIS and Web-to-print systems more easily. The company’s Impostrip OnDemand Automation functionality enables the connectivity to consume job tickets, and then track the imposition for downstream finishing controls, as well as automate irregular sequence of book sections to send back an audit file upstream. Ultimate also highlighted its Impostrip OnDemand Scalable application for high-volume toner and inkjet presses, which also includes a new Job Manager when dealing

Van Son Grand Format Inks Van Son launched a new line of Grand Format inks, which the company describes as a product alternative to OEM inks from vendors such as VUTEk, Durst, Agfa, and HP. The Grand Format line covers LED, UV curable, and ecosolvent based inks. Van Son claims the new inkjet inks can achieve 80 percent of Pantone colours.

Xanté launched its new Excelgraphix 4200 P series inkjet printer and a new version of its iQueue Workflow. The Excelagraphix 4200 P printer is a wide format system that uses Memjet’s Waterfall Printhead Technology to produce upwards of three billion drops of ink per second. The device, according to Xanté, is designed to handle thick media, including corrugated board up to 1/2-inch thick. The new Xanté iQueue workflow software is described as an all-in-one RIP workflow and colour handling application used in the company’s devices. Xanté also showed its Excelagraphix L850 narrow web press and the Ilumina 650GS series.

Xeikon 8500, Trillium Xeikon highlighted its 8000 Series presses which feature LED-array imaging technology to produce true 1,200-dpi resolution and 4-bit per spot colour depth. The system works with a media width of 20.2 inches, as well as monthly duty cycles of up to 10-million pages. Xeikon also demonstrated its ThermoFlexX digital imaging system and discussed its continuing development of the liquid-toner Trillium technology it first unveiled at drupa. Xeikon says it plans to install its first beta unit based on Trillium technology in the first quarter of 2014.

Xerox showcased its Impika iPrint Compact system described as highly flexible in terms of colour, speed and resolution upgradability. iPrint Compact is a singleengine, duplexing inkjet system with a small footprint for transactional and direct-mail applications. Impika iEngine 1000, intended for commercial applications, is a standalone print-head and ink delivery system that can be mounted on offset presses, inserters and envelope systems, among others. The device prints at 600 x 600 dpi resolution with speeds of up to 150 metres per minute in colour and 300 metres per minute in black and white. Xerox also highlighted its CiPress 500 Single Engine Duplex (SED) system, which uses waterless solid inks to print duplex jobs in a single frame at 500 or 325 feet per minute with the CiPress 325 engine.

Canadian manufacturer meets demand for fast-drying ink Eli Ganho is as proud as a new father over his two latest products: Ultra Quick Set and Fast Trap. The former dries in minutes while the latter allows for printing on plastic, nylon, or mylar on sheetfed lithographic presses. Ganho Inks is still a small company, located in an industrial unit north of Toronto. There are only nine people in total at the company and Eli Ganho still spends most of his time in the lab, working on new formulations and new products.

Today, exports account for about 20 percent of Ganho’s total volume, including Ultra Gloss, Ultra Quick-Set, standard inks, metallics, and the lithographic scratch-off coating. Ganho is positive about the export market, but says he will concentrate on proving his new products at home first.
