Child-friendly Space for Sansiri Construction Sites: The Beginning

The concept of the ‘Child-friendly space for Sansiri construction sites’ has been realised by Sansiri’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, “Sansiri Social Change”, which is an innovative approach to help, support, and develop the wellbeing of children in an inclusive and sustainable way.

Sansiri supports the end of child labour on construction sites, and to ensure that Sansiri’s business partners share the same vision, Sansiri has signed MOUs with contractors forbidding the exploitation of children through child labour. (Children is defined as persons below 18 years old.) Any breach of this agreement results in termination of contract. The stipulation is enforced throughout Sansiri’s construction process, including projects in upcountry areas.

What is ‘Child-friendly Space’?

Child-friendly space is an initiative of Sansiri in collaboration with our construction partners. Under this initiative, a space is allocated within our construction sites for children of our construction workers to use in safety.

Here, the children have access to learning and development opportunities in a safe environment through a variety of activities and lessons designed to help them take basic care of themselves, as well as, to stimulate their learning competency at appropriate age levels.

Child-friendly Space for Sansiri Construction Sites: Why Is It Important?

The concept of the ‘Child-friendly space’ has been designed to contribute to developing people with good qualities for society, by helping to provide a good ‘childhood’ for them. The stage of life from newborn to 6 years of age is the period of ‘childhood’ and it is the time during which a child’s brain cells produce their fastest development. So, if we want these children to become well-adjusted adults with good personal qualities, it is essential that we make efforts to nurture their childhood development, physically, emotionally and morally.

of life in the future. The project places emphasis on the importance of a safe environment for children to learn and develop in a sustainable way. This can help prevent many social problems in the long term.

The project ‘Child-friendly space for Sansiri construction sites’ is regarded as a great and most worthwhile contribution to society by Sansiri. It demonstrates our genuine commitment to providing a better basis for improved quality Child-friendly Space Guideline Booklet

The Future of These Children Lies In Your Hands

Come, join us in creating ‘good people’ for future society! Construction contractors who participate in the ‘Child-friendly space’ initiative play an important role in ensuring its success. Contractors begin their work by compiling a list of all children within the construction site (details on page 9), then promote the

‘Child-friendly space’ among target families and parents. After that, contractors begin the construction of the ‘Child-friendly space’ within the site. And last but not least, once the construction is finished, the contractors are responsible for managing the ‘Child-friendly space’ to contribute to the wellbeing of the children and their families.

Benefits of the ‘Child-friendly space’ for contractors • Enhanced quality of life. Construction worker families prefer to work in places with clean and safe living quarters, and those which provide the wellbeing and basic education opportunities their children need.

• Better learning opportunities for children of construction workers. Quality of life for children in construction sites can be improved significantly if a similar approach as that of the ‘Child-friendly space’ is followed and implemented in other construction sites.

• Lower accident risks for the children of construction workers. • More effective workforce. With the ‘Child-friendly space’, female workers with children can concentrate on their work and be sure that their children will be cared for. • Lower electricity costs. The electricity used will be much less during the daytime because female workers no longer need to stay in their quarters to care for their children.
