Are You Eligible for Medicare and Medicaid? Here’s What You Should Know...

ome people qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare covers seniors age 65 or older, and those under 65 with certain disabilities. Medicaid helps people who have a low income pay for their health care costs. If you qualify for both, you are “dual eligible.” Health plans for dual eligibles, such as Fidelis Dual Advantage, offer one point of contact for your coverage and make it easier to use your benefits. Here are three important facts about dual-eligible plans: 1) Are available year-round You can sign up in a dual-eligible plan year-round. If you’re already a member of one of these plans, you can select a new plan quarterly. People with Medicare alone can sign up in new plans only once a year or during certain life events, such as when they turn 65 years old. 2) Help you avoid gaps in coverage Sometimes, Medicare benefits don’t cover all the care you need. This means there is a “gap” between the care you need and the care that is covered. If you had a gap, you would have to pay out of pocket. Dual-eligible plans can use your Medicaid benefits to fill such gaps. By filling these gaps, you pay less for the care you need. 3) Can offer health support from Care Managers Some dual-eligible plans offer help managing your health. Care Managers could help you coordinate the care you receive. This way, doctors

work as a team, which can help you be healthier. They also can make using your insurance easier, and can help you find resources in your community. To learn more about Fidelis Dual Advantage, visit www.fideliscare.org/medicare or speak with one of our Licensed Sales Representatives. They can meet with you in your home, answer your questions, and help you find the coverage that's right for you. Call 1-800860-8707 (TTY: 711) to speak with a Representative over the phone, or to arrange an in-person meeting.

What to Know When Selecting a Medicare Plan

F

or the millions of Americans aged 65 and older, Medicare is a critical source of health care. And during the Medicare Annual Election Period between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7, those eligible can select or make changes to their plans for 2019. Experts say that this selection is vitally important and should be done with care. “It’s a good idea to go shopping for potential plans and consider each element of them,” says Brian Evanko, who leads Cigna’s government programs, including Cigna-HealthSpring, which is a supplier of Medicare Advantage products. “Your goal should be to choose a plan that strikes the right balance between the benefits you’ll need and what you can afford.” To help you choose a plan and get the most from it, consider these tips from the experts at Cigna-HealthSpring:

• Determine your priorities. Plans can vary widely, and certain plans go beyond the basics to include such benefits as transportation assistance to doctor appointments, fitness classes, discounts on home delivery of covered prescription medications and even nutritious meals after a hospital discharge. “Special needs plans” are available to those with qualifying conditions, such as having certain chronic illnesses or being eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. Taking the time to identify your priorities and health care needs will help you evaluate your plan options from an informed standpoint. • Know your network. The right plan will offer you support in navigating a complex health care system, saving you time and money. Seek out a plan that offers you a team of providers that will commit to getting to know your needs and delivering coordinated care. If you have favorite doctors or pharmacies, make sure they are within your network. • Leverage preventive care opportunities. Preventive care saves lives and helps you delay or avoid the onset of disease. So, schedule your annual check-up and keep your appointment. Get to know your doctor and ask about any screenings you need for your age and background. For more information about preventive care, visit cigna.com/takecontrol. • Get active. Incorporate exercise into your routine; it’s essential to healthy aging. While original Medicare doesn’t cover gym memberships or fitness programs, a number of Medicare Advantage plans offer such benefits as part of their coverage at no extra cost. • Use free resources. To compare plans, use free resources like the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Plan Finder where plans are rated from one to five stars. Many insurance plans offer no-cost, no-obligation seminars explaining plan details. You can also check health plans’ websites or call their customer service team for more information. This Annual Election Period, consider your personal health circumstances and budget needs carefully. The right plan will help you maximize your physical and financial wellbeing, ensuring you have affordable access to the benefits you need all year long. — StatePoint 50+ PHOTO SOURCE: (c) s4svisuals / stock.Adobe.com 50+ LifeStyles November 2018 • www.50PlusNY.com 11

A MyNotifi Memo: Getting Help When You’ve Fallen, and When You Haven’t

T

here are many choices for wearable devices seniors can use to summon help, but they’re not all created equal. Seniors can be reluctant to push the button on medical alert pendants, even when they know they need help, when it means alerting 911–a situation that feels out of their control. They’re far more likely, however, to use devices that alert family or friends instead. Ed is a case in point. He isn’t the type of person to ask for help. His wife convinced him to get a MyNotifi fall-detection device, which clips to his belt. He wears it more for her peace of mind than for his own. It came in handy recently. Ed fell asleep on his recliner one day while using a heating pad on his back. His wife was gone for the afternoon.

When he woke up, the heat was unbearable. He didn’t know it then, but he had second-degree

burns. He couldn’t get out of his chair to reach the phone, but fortunately he was wearing his MyNotifi. He tapped the device and his wife got the alert. She and their daughter took him to ur-

gent care. Although he learned later that his situation was serious, Ed told us that he wouldn’t have been so quick to ask for help if the call had gone to emergency services rather than to his family. MyNotifi is an automatic fall detection device. It clips to your waistband, or is worn on your wrist. It connects to a free smartphone app, so it goes wherever you go. When a fall is detected, it automatically notifies a list of selected loved ones. But MyNotifi does more than that. Use MyNotifi to summon help any time, even if you haven’t fallen, by simply tapping it. There are no monthly fees, no contract, and no call centers. iabetes affects more than 29.1 million people in the U.S. More than one in every 10 adults has diabetes; for seniors that rises to one in four. Type 2 Diabetes the most common form (90 percent) is associated with obesity and overweight, lack of physical activity, family history and older age. The first-line treatment for Type 2 diabetes is weight loss, diet and exercise. Even when oral antidiabetic or insulin treatment is introduced successful regulation of diabetes and preventing damage to one’s health can be problematic and lead to complications. Gastric bypass and the gastric sleeve, popular options for obese people who want to shed pounds quickly, have been found to resolve in most patients their type 2 diabetes too! Bariatric surgery results in far greater and more sustained weight loss than conventional treatments, and leads to improvements in diabetes and obesity related diseases. It is now being explored as a cure for Type 2 diabetes in normal weight or moderately overweight

as well. While not yet approved for individuals without weight problem the vast majority of people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. Patients with a BMI of 35 or greater with diabetes qualif y for bariatric treatment. Studies show that up to 84 percent who underwent gastric bypass and almost 60 percent of sleeve patients experienced a complete reversal of their Type 2 diabetes. Rapid improvement in blood sugars and reduction or elimination of diabetic medications is often seen within the immediate period following bariatric surgery, even before significant weight loss! Alan Parsons at The Paramount in Huntington

L

ive in Concert on November 19, 2018, at The Paramount in Huntington, Long Island: the ALAN PARSONS LIVE PROJECT — 11-time Grammy nominated and legendary music icon, “The Sonic Master of Progressive Rock.” Alan Parsons was born into a family with an impressive history in entertainment. His great-grandfather was the celebrated actor/manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. His mother was an actress, professional folk singer and harpist and his father, Denys Parsons, an accomplished pianist and flautist as well as the author of many books. The late film actor, Oliver Reed, was a cousin. His uncle, David Tree, was also a film and stage actor. Alan had dabbled with live performances in his late teens as a folk/blues acoustic player and as a lead guitarist with a blues band called The Earth in the late 60s in his hometown of London. (their only album, “Elemental” surfaced recently and was released by Record Collector Magazine in 2016). But as soon as he landed a job at the famous Abbey Road Studios at the age of 19, it became clear that the world of sound recording was to dominate his career. He was fortunate enough to work as assistant engineer on the last two albums by The Beatles and after he qualified as a fully-fledged recording engineer, he went on to work with Paul McCartney and The Hollies among many others.

But it was his contribution as engineer on Pink Floyd’s classic “The Dark Side Of The Moon” that really brought him world attention. That soon led to striking successes as a producer – notably with Pilot’s “Magic”, John Miles’ “Highfly and Music” and Steve Harley’s (“Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile.” He also produced the hugely successful “Year of The Cat” album with Al Stewart and two albums with American prog rock band Ambrosia.

O

ver-Sixty: Shades of Gray; A Journey Through Life’s Later Years (on the Road to Fossilization), by Barbara Paskoff and Carol Pack (222 pages, soft cover, from Artiqua Press. Paperback $17.95; E-book $4.99). My initial reaction when I saw the title was, “Oh please,” but I found this to be an informationpacked booked filled with humor. It is consistently irreverent and interesting on several levels. Midcentury Christmas by Sarah Archer is literally a stocking-stuffer sized, 190-page, illustrated hardcover book ($15.95 from The Countryman Press) filled with all kinds of Christmas trivia. When did the first aluminum trees pop up? What colors were the first Easy-Bake Ovens? Remember the old Gilbert Chemistry sets? The answers — and much more — are all here. This is a plain old fun read that’ll bring back memories and belongs in everybody’s bathroom (okay, or den!). 50+

A few things are new this season: •Flu vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses [the B/Victoria component was changed and the influenza A(H3N2) component was updated]. •For the 2018-2019 season, the nasal spray flu vaccine is again a recommended option for influenza vaccination of persons for whom it is otherwise appropriate. The nasal spray is approved for use in non-pregnant individuals, 2 years through 49 years of age. There is a precaution against the use of LAIV for people with certain underlying medical conditions. All LAIV will be quadrivalent (four-component). •Most regular-dose egg-based flu shots will be quadrivalent.

•All recombinant vaccine will be quadrivalent. (No trivalent recombinant vaccine will be available this season.) •Cell-grown flu vaccine will be quadrivalent. For this vaccine, the influenza A(H3N2) and both influenza B reference viruses will be cell-derived, and the influenza A(H1N1) will be egg-derived. All these reference viruses will be grown in cells to produce the components of Flucelvax. •No intradermal flu vaccine will be available. •The age recommendation for “Fluarix Quadrivalent” was changed from three-years old and older, to six-months and older after the annual recommendations were published last season to be consistent with Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved labeling. •The age recommendation for Afluria Quadrivalent changed from 18 years old and older to 5 years old and older after the annual recommendations were published last season to be consistent with Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved labeling.

What f lu vaccines are recommended this season? For the 2018-2019 flu season, providers may choose to administer any licensed, ageappropriate flu vaccine (IIV, RIV4, or LAIV4). Options this season include: •Standard dose flu shots. These are given into the muscle. They are usually given with a needle, but two (Afluria and Afluria Quadrivalent) can be given to some (aged 18 through 64 years) with a jet injector. •High-dose shots and shots made with adjuvant for older people. •Shots made with virus grown in cell culture and made using a vaccine production technology (recombinant vaccine) that does not require the use of flu virus. •Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) – nasal spray vaccine – is an option for use during the 2018-2019 season. What viruses will the 2018-2019 flu vaccines protect against? There are many different flu viruses and (Continued on page 29)

Legislator Sunderman Recognizes Frank Trotta as an Italian American of Distinction

O

n October 2, 2018, the Suffolk County Legislature approved IR: 1858-2018 which was co-sponsored by Legislator Sunderman and designated October as “Italian American Appreciation Month” in Suffolk County. An important part of this legislation also gives Legislators the opportunity to recognize an Italian American of Distinction within their Legislative Districts. This is an individual of Italian ancestry who has made significant contributions to their local community through their volunteerism and influence. Legislator Sunderman announced that he selected Mr. Frank Trotta of Bellport to be the 3rd Legislative District’s first ever honoree as Italian American of Distinction. “When I was asked to select someone whom I believed was worthy of this honor, the first name that came to mind was Frank Trotta. He has been a significant influence within the Bellport community for most of his life,” said Sunderman. Frank Trotta — publisher of 50+ Lifestyles and Fire News — is a lifelong resident of Bellport who has had a lifetime of public service to his community. Frank was elected as a trustee to the Vil-

lage of Bellport in 1977 and served in that capacity for six years until he was elected Mayor in 1983. At the time of his election he was the youngest serving Mayor in the history of New York State. Frank is also a local business owner who operated a Travel Agency and currently publishes 50 Plus Lifestyles and Fire News. Frank currently serves as a Councilmember of the Stony Brook University Council and as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Suffolk Federal Credit Union. Frank has also served as the Chairman of the Town of Brookhaven’s Board of Zoning Appeals, a Trustee of Suffolk Community College, and as Director of Suffolk County’s Office of the Aging. Frank is also a volunteer with the Bellport Fire Department and serves as their Chaplin. “Frank Trotta is a great example of how one individual can give back to his community in a wide variety of ways, whether through his volunteerism or his business. Frank has always been an active member within the Village of Bellport and I know that legacy will continue for years to come.” Stated Legislator Sunderman “This is why I am honored to recognize him as the 3rd Legislative District’s first Italian American of Distinction.”50+

Dependable Relief Now Available for Chronic Migraine Sufferers By Dr. Mehran Golpariani

M

igraines are a common neurological issue that affects more than 39 million men, women, and children in the United States. Migraines cause severe throbbing or pulsing pain. The pain can be so intense, that you also become nauseated, start vomiting, or become overly sensitive to light and sound. In extreme cases, migraine attacks last for several days. Dr. M. Golpariani Migraines aren’t well understood, but medical experts have identified certain common triggers for migraine attacks. Common factors can include: Genetics, Food additives, Hormonal fluctuations, Emotional stress & Sudden weather changes. Unlike tension and cluster headaches which are consider acute headaches and respond to medication after the onset of a headache, migraines are different and must be treated differently. Once a chronic migraine comes on it is already too late for medicine used for acute types of headaches. Preventive medicine is the only solution. In our practice we have found that even for patients that have 20 or more uncontrollable migraines a month, injections of Botox, a purified form of protein and the first FDA – approved preventive chronic migraine treatment have effectively provided migraine free living right away for up to 12 weeks at a time! The 50+ Lifestyles

R

od Stewart Interview

HOW ARE YOU DOING? ROD STEWART: I’m good.

THE NEW RECORD IS GREAT! ROD STEWART: Yeah. Thank you.

WAS IT AS MUCH FUN TO MAKE AS YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDS? ROD STEWART: Of course, I wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t joy. It’s fun making records — it’s certainly better than digging the road. It’s more fun now than it used to be, you know, spending months on end in studios, you don’t have to do that anymore. You can do it all on laptops and do it transatlantic. It’s much easier. YOU’VE BEEN FAMOUS PRETTY MUCH ALL YOUR ADULT LIFE – HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN IF YOU’D JUST GOT A REGULAR JOB? ROD STEWART: Who knows? I like to think I’m pretty unchanged. My brothers and my sister keep me really grounded if I get out of line. I think I’m a pretty regular guy who got very, very lucky, made loads of money and had a hell of a good time and is extremely thankful for it. YOU’VE ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE YOU’RE ENJOYING YOUR LIFE? ROD STEWART: It’s true. People critizize me for being a womaniser, which I undoubtedly was. I wasn’t doing anything different than a guy my age would have done, probably, you know, in his 20s when he suddenly became very famous and earned lots of money. I was playing the field, you know, blokes do. BUT EVEN NOW YOU ALWAYS HAVE THAT SMILE ON YOUR FACE? YOU MUST BE IN A GOOD PLACE? ROD STEWART: Yeah. It’s very good. Unexpectedly I didn’t think I was going to have two more children and that’s been the world to me. I mean one is 12 and the other one is seven, they are both football daft Celtic supporters, even the little one goes to school in his shirt. So that, being a father late in life for me, was just wonderful. It really is. I miss them so much and once again, I only said goodbye to them four or five hours ago, well a bit longer when they went to school. The one thing about touring for me these days, which is so difficult is being away from my two children and my wife and all my kids. So what I do now is the school holidays when I

do touring. So they can either come with me or they don’t. But I give them that opportunity. DO YOU HAVE TO BE A CELTIC FAN IN YOUR HOUSE? ROD STEWART: Too f—king right you do! [laughs] All my sons, they’ve all got their Celtic jerseys. That’s the way it is with football though. You always support the team your father did. So I hope their children do the same. Celtic for life. YOU HAVE THE WHOLE RANGE WHEN IT COMES TO KIDS -YOU HAD CHILDREN EARLY IN LIFE AND NOW IN YOUR 60S? ROD STEWART: I have to be a different father, I have a different father’s hat on for each child, because they’re all so different and the age differences is immense. If you think my eldest daughter is in her 50s all the way down to seven, which is quite an extraordinary age difference between them all. So I have to be a different father to each one of them. AND YOU HAVE GRANDCHILDREN AS WELL? ROD STEWART: Just one grandchild. Yeah. COULD YOU EVER IMAGINE BEING OLD? ROD STEWART: I am old! [laughs] TECHNICALLY SPEAKING BUT YOU CERTAINLY DON’T LOOK OR ACT OLD? ROD STEWART: This knee is gone, that’s when I know I’m old, when I can’t kick a football properly. But I do feel good. I work out a lot, I keep myself fit and I think that’s very important. Try to have a really good diet. I drink too much. That’s my downfall. I drink too much wine, I love it. I can’t have a nice meal in a lovely restaurant and have a glass of water, I can’t do that. BUT MAYBE HAVE WINE AND A GLASS A WATER… ROD STEWART: Also a glass of water on top of the wine. YOU SAY YOU DRINK TOO MUCH BUT IT’S NOT BEEN THE RUIN OF YOU, LIKE SOME OF YOUR CONTEMPORARIES? ROD STEWART: Oh I’ve never fallen down. Couple of football matches I’ve fallen down at yeah. I have a great tolerance for alcohol, I never get drunk, but then I don’t drink much. I’ll have maybe two glasses of white wine, not big glasses like a lot of people drink, but two glasses and then I’ll have a big glass of red wine. And that is seven nights in a week and I don’t think I’ll change now. It’s too late in life. ‘DIDN’T I’ THE SINGLE – IS IT ABOUT HAVING PROBLEMS WITH DRUGS? ROD STEWART: Yeah with kids, from a parent’s perspective. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? ROD STEWART: I don’t know. Before I started work on the album I never sat down and said, ‘I’m going to write a story from a parent’s perspective if your child was getting hooked on drugs’, you know, ‘and there were differences in their demeanour and their manner and you’re starting to worry.’ Children go away all starry-eyed to California and it still happens. But I didn’t sit down to write a song like that, it just came, like all songs,

Cover Story - Rod Stewart they just come. It’s amazing. WHO IS THE GIRL IN ‘HONEY GOLD’? ROD STEWART: It’s someone I’ve admired from a distance. But no, never really knew her. She was part of the ‘scene’ and that was it, decided to write a song about her. YOU SAY ABOUT ‘LOOK IN HER EYES’, THIS A BIT OF A MORAL STORY? ROD STEWART: It is yeah. I’ve always been fascinated with the lines outside clubs, especially in America, you know, where there’s a bouncer and the girls are all lined up, all dressed up, the men are a bit scruffy. But it’s always amazed me and so the song is not only about that but it’s also about nowadays times have changed and guys have to be very careful. With the #MeToo movement, which was long overdue, they have to be careful. They can’t just have a drink and pounce on a woman, even if she gives them the eye. That is not permission to go overboard. IT WAS A BIT DIFFERENT IN THE SIXTIES? ROD STEWART: A little bit more than it is now. So yeah, there is a little moral story behind it, you know, ‘Be careful guys’. I’ve never had that problem myself! We always had to push them away in The Faces days! DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE AS MUCH FUN TO BE A YOUNG, SEXY ROCK STAR IN YOUR 20S NOW? ROD STEWART: No. Nowhere near as good. Just because phones and cameras have sort of made it a little bit impossible to get away with the things that we did like, for instance, in The Faces days. You can’t get away with anything now. Everything’s on camera, everything’s on film, everything’s on the internet. So no, I think the seventies were so wild and free and so were the eighties. YOU HAD YOUR SHARE OF FUN? ROD STEWART: Yeah. It’s been one hell of a ride and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR OWN MORTALITY? ROD STEWART: Of course, I’d be lying if I didn’t say, of course I do. I’m not frightened of dying, I don’t want it to happen too soon! But it doesn’t particularly worry me. I do everything I can to stay away from the grave. I have medicals, I have blood tests, I exercise, I have scans, I do everything else. I think men should really use the advancements in medicine that we have today, to go and have your prostrate tested, to go and have colonoscopies and the other one, the camera that goes down your throat, which is awful, but when you walk out there and you know that you’ve got no cysts, no growths all the way through here. And have a liver test, all this stuff is there for us to use and men should use it. SO YOU’RE IN GREAT SHAPE AND READY TO TOUR? ROD STEWART: I’ve just finished a tour. We did 29 dates in the States with Cyndi Lauper and now I’ve got to go back and do another 12/13 dates. She’s actually very good fun. She really is. Weird though, well f— king weird. Wow. She’s that New York, New Jersey accent but she’s fun. ONE OF YOUR US NEIGHBOURS IS IN THE NEWS QUITE A LOT – DONALD TRUMP? ROD STEWART: I live just up the road from him in Florida and I used to go to all his parties and he always treated me very, very well, I must

TECH TALK

Computer

Viruses Q

: What do I do when I’m browsing the web and my computer suddenly flashes a warning telling me my computer has infections and I should call a number on the screen to have them removed? As an IT consultant I’ve seen all kinds of ways for scammers to make money off of the uninformed by intimidating them with fear. If you’re asked to call a number that shows up while you are searching inside a web browser, no matter who they say they are, do NOT call them. It is most likely a scam. Like most search engines, the paid search results are displayed at the very top. This is where scammers enter the picture. Scammers are betting on you clicking on one of the top handful of results that states it’s the website that you want to go to. Unfortunately, when you click that search result, you’re not usually going to your desired website. You are actually clicking on an ad purchased by the scammer. As you click on this link you’re redirected through a chain of websites that ultimately lands on a fake one. It will cause your browser to pop

with Mark Rinaudo up a window that takes up your whole computer screen and disables any means of closing it. For the added intimidation your speakers may start talking to inform you that your machine is infected and your machine is going to infect other machines. You’re presented with a message that your machine is infected and needs to be cleaned and that you should call the 1-800 number provided on that screen. You’re in the beginning stage of a scam. If you do call the scammer and allow them to connect to your computer, then the security of your machine is compromised. In most cases the scammers will install free downloadable software from the web on your machine to “clean” your machine. They ask for your credit card information, of course, before doing this. The charge to provide this service can range from $200 on up. If you think calling your credit card company after the fact will help, you’ll be surprised to learn there’s nothing they can do about it because you gave the scammer permission. You’re basically paying them a minimum of $200 an hour to install free software that you could download and install yourself. The danger in all this is when you allow a scammer to connect to your machine, you are allowing a stranger, under false pretenses, to have access to your computer and all the files on it.

Antiviral treatment as early as possible is also recommended for people who are very sick with flu (such as those with complicated, progressive illness or people hospitalized because of flu). Other people can be treated with antivirals at their health care professional’s discretion. Treating high risk people or people who are very sick with flu with antiviral drugs is very important. Prompt treatment can mean the difference between having a milder illness versus very serious illness that could result in an extended hospital stay. Treatment with antivirals works best when begun within 48 hours of getting sick, but can still be beneficial when given later in the course of illness. Antiviral drugs are effective across all age and risk groups. Studies show that antiviral drugs are under-prescribed for people at high risk of complications who get flu. Three FDA-approved antiviral medications are recommended for use during the 2018-2019 flu season: oseltamivir (available in generic versions and under the trade name Tamiflu®), zanamivir (Relenza®), and peramivir (Rapivab®). Changing Lives Forever

A

s we go to press, the annual Ms. Senior America National Pageant is taking place at Resorts Hotel in Atlantic City. Representing New York is our 2018 reigning Queen, Maureen Griffin-Damone. We wish her the best of luck at this prestigious competition. New York can boast the fact that we have had three National Queens. In 1997 the late Louise Stuetley, wowed the audience with her sensational operatic voice. We have asked both Helen McCarney (2005) and Gail King (2009) to share their experiences of how winning the National Pageant changed their lives forever. Helen Mc Carney brought home the crown with her charisma and brilliant talent. Today she continues to inspire Senior America Louise Stuetley women all over the country. “It was in the 1950s after performing on the Ed Sullivan, Jack Parr and Kate Smith Shows that I received a call from the summer replacement of the Show of Shows called Saturday Night Review. They were planning on a pilot film called, “Oops It’s Daisy” and offered me an amazing opportunity to appear in the movie. At the time I was married to a terrific husband and was a mom to three children. I made my decision and turned down show business for the most rewarding job of all … being a mom. How could I ever equal those early opportunities? Well, I’ll tell you how! “In 2005 Marleen Schuss called and said she heard me sing and asked me to become a contestant in the Ms. New York Senior America Pageant. I entered the competition and won the title of Ms. New York Senior America. I then went on to the National Pageant and won the prestigious title of Helen McCarney Ms. Senior America which was just wonderful. But staying involved all these years was even better. I was thrilled watching women over 60 years of age empowering themselves. I went on to serve as President of the Alumni Association and continue to help make it the

strong organization it is today.” Gail King continues today to promote her platform of service, volunteerism and cancer research. “Uncertainty can hold you back or allow you to step outside the box,” said Gail. “After winning the national title, I took a chance, faced new challenges and my life changed forever. I made 500 appearances across the country, appeared on TV and spoke at Vanderbilt University as their guest of honor. I used my sash and title to speak about one of my many causes, Breast Cancer Awareness, Survivor vs. Thriver, while inspiring women and men diagnosed with cancer. I learned to rediscover a sense of self and while gaining confidence reevaluated what was really Gail King important to me. There is no room for complacency while reinventing oneself or for realizing one’s dreams and what a life it is! “I was in the movie “Salt” with Angelina Jolie, danced the closing scene for the TV show “Pan Am,” modeled in New York Fashion Week shows, did commercials and most recently became a part of a fashion shoot campaign for the Sisterhood. But, winning Ms. Senior America has given me the opportunity to become a nominee for best local reporter and best Long Island personality. I became a SAG actress/model, columnist, do Red Carpet interviews at movie premiers and charity fundraisers and, best of all, the confidence to speak and fight for so many causes on my own national TV show “LooKING to make a Difference with Gail. Stay flexible and don’t be afraid of failure as “failure is life’s greatest teacher. Enjoy the challenge of living your dreams at any age.” Thank you, Helen and Gail, for your inspirational thoughts! Once you become part of the Senior America family it’s a lifetime journey filled with new possibilities each and every day. Until next time, Joan and Marleen 50+ COUPON

admit and he also treated all my friends very well. This Donald Trump that is the President is not the Donald Trump I know. I quite understand why people want to vote for him, because people want change but he’s not presidential in my eyes. ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE WORLD UNDER HIS PRESIDENCY? ROD STEWART: I’m worried that China and Russia are getting too close to each other. You know they are forming an alliance against the West. That is worrying. HOW MUCH DOES BEING “SIR” ROD STEWRAT MEAN TO YOU? ROD STEWART: It means a hell of a lot although I’m still Rod. It was just an amazing day. I just wish my mum and dad were alive to have seen it. But when I go into hotels and people go ‘Sir Rod’ it’s lovely. I lap it up. I love it. But it doesn’t change my life, it doesn’t change my life at all. I don’t get a tax break or anything like that! [laughs] FINALLY, HOW MUCH CARE DOES YOUR HAIR TAKE ON A DAILY BASIS? ROD STEWART: Not much really. I usually wash it twice a week, only use shampoo once a week, shampoo takes all the oil out of it. So I just make it wet. DOES IT STAND UP BY ITSELF? ROD STEWART: No, there’s a bit of product in there. But this is how I look when I wake up. This is it. It’s not going anywhere and it won’t lay down. [laughs] 50+
