ACMF – challenges ahead but also opportunities

s in past years, I would like to take this opportunity to focus on some of the main issues encountered by the chicken meat industry over the past twelve months. There are many topics of ongoing relevance and a few new issues that have cropped up. All in all, there are far too many to cover in one page. What follows is therefore a selection of topics that retrospectively stand out as perhaps more important. Animal welfare remains of major interest to the media. We know that our industry operates in line with the relevant model codes of practice. We also know that our growers care about the wellbeing of their birds. Unfortunately there is a constant questioning of this commitment to the welfare of our chickens by a small but vocal group of people, perhaps most clearly illustrated by their use of the term ‘factory farming’. The term is used over and over by animal liberation organisations. Why? Because it makes the point that what our industry does is not traditional farming which is seen as a worthwhile, honourable and responsible pursuit. What these groups are saying is that we are not farming birds, we are producing chicken meat in factory farms. We know that this does not reflect the truth. Although technologies have changed, we know chicken growers care about the health and wellbeing of their birds just as much as they ever did. We need to get this message out to the broader world. We must promote the fact that what we stand for is responsible farming of chickens, protecting them from disease and predators, providing the right feed and plenty of water and addressing any health issues promptly. This communication will take time and it will take a special effort from all players in the industry. ACMF is certainly committed to spreading this message combined with factual and timely information on all aspects of the industry. RSPCA’s Approved Farming Scheme for Meat Chickens was finalised, and we have seen the first chicken meat producers enter the program during 2011. Free range

chickens, mostly accredited under the FREPA standard, now make up an estimated 12 % of the total meat chicken production. This sector is still growing in response to increasing consumer demand. The implementation at the State level of the FSANZ poultry standard was progressed through the development of a Proforma Food Safety Management Statement for contract chicken meat farms. All States will have to have legislation and regulations in place by 20 May 2012 to implement the new standard. Every State has agreed to the Pro-forma which essentially requires that the measures in the current biosecurity manual be implemented and documented. While the administrative requirements will vary, processors and growers can expect that the food regulators in each State to become more active in rolling out the arrangements in the lead-up to 20 May 2012. We were surprised and disappointed to receive notification out of the blue that ACCC had lodged proceedings against ACMF in the Federal Court for ‘misleading conduct’. The ACCC’s case is centred around the words “free to roam on the floor of large barns” used on our website when explaining that no cages are used in our industry. ACCC claims the statement is misleading because, in their words from their own media release, “the population density of meat chickens raised in barns preclude such movement.” Animals Australia openly declared that they had put this matter to ACCC which essentially means that consumer protection legislation has been used to attack our industry and its animal welfare credentials. The court case is set down for mid-March 2012. Finishing on a positive note, there was a very good report on our industry on ABC’s Landline program early in 2011 and we also welcomed the new production statistics published in September this year which showed that official published figures for the past couple of years were underestimating true production. The 2010-11 figures are in line with

Andreas Dubs, Executive Director, Australian Chicken Meat Federation Inc the constant increase that the industry has experienced over many years and brings per capita consumption for the most recent financial year to 43.9kg, a figure well above other meats and representing 40% of total meat consumption in Australia. And that does not even include turkey and duck. In November 2011, ACMF published ‘The Australian Chicken Meat Industry: An Industry in Profile’, bringing together all the latest statistics and facts in an attractive and accessible format. This report is available at www.chicken.org.au/industryprofile. With over 100 downloads per day for the first three weeks, the report has had a very positive reception. I invite you to have a look at this publication; having up-to-date industry information at your fingertips will assist you in promoting the industry in your day-to-day interactions. AECL: 2011, a record year of continued market growth

he Australian egg industry continues to evolve into a large-scale professional business servicing a dynamic market with a range of eggs and egg products by farmers who care about producing the highest quality, safest product, our environment, providing choice, the welfare of our hens and feeding our growing population. The Australian Egg Corporation Limited (AECL) will continue to assist this sustainable growth by developing and driving integrated on-farm, through chain and market services that maximise benefits and revenue for the Australian egg industry and the community while minimising barriers and costs for Australian egg producers. Last year proved to be a record year for egg consumption, demand, sales and production. Consumption reached 213 eggs per capita on an MAT basis as at December and spiked at 221 eggs per capita on a spot basis during the month of October, the height of the traditional spring ‘flush’ reflecting an increase in market demand for the year. Compared to 2010, the MAT result for 2011 is up by 7% or 14 eggs per capita. In terms of retail sales, a total of 128.4 million dozen eggs were sold which is up by 5% on the volumes sold in 2010 and up by 19% on the 5-year average with long term annual growth also averaging 5% each year. This compares to population growth in Australia that averages 1.5% each year. In terms of value, the egg category generated $523.5 million in retail sales in 2011, up by 7% on 2010 and up by 24% on the 5-year average. On a segment basis, cage egg sales totaled 71 million dozen, down by 1% on 2010 levels but up by 2% on the 5-year average, with free range egg sales reaching 43 million, up by a massive 24% on 2010 levels and up by 64% on the 5-year average. This was driven, in part, by retail prices for free range eggs being the lowest since 2006. Barn-laid egg sales fell to total 11 million dozen, down by 3%, but increased by 64% on the 5-year average. In terms of market shares in 2011, cage eggs owned 55% of the retail market with free range eggs representing 34%. Barn-

laid eggs remained subdued at 9% of the market with organic and other specialty eggs representing 2% of the market. The increased market demand was reflected in higher production volumes with the industry producing 392 million dozen during 2011 or 12.9 million eggs each day. This result is up by 10% on 2010 levels and up by 22% on the 5-year average. All of this growth has been driven by heightened product awareness campaigns by AECL and branded suppliers; increased ‘permission’ to eat more eggs as part of the weekly meal repertoire; greater levels of industry consolidation and co-operation; and continued capital reinvestment and adoption of new technologies and science through research leading to greater levels of industry productivity. However is this growth rate sustainable? The behavior of some retail customers in reducing the price points for eggs during 2011 is squeezing industry margins and hence the ability for industry to maintain current levels of capital reinvestment and productivity. This will also lead to the inability to adopt technologies thereby hindering, among other things, better techniques in animal husbandry which affect the health and welfare of our laying hens. In 2011, the retail value of free range

eggs declined by 7% or 40 cents a dozen on the averages recorded in 2010 resulting in the cheapest retail price for free range eggs since 2006. This is bad news for an industry that wishes to maintain levels of reinvestment and adoption of new technologies. This year will be a busy one for the egg industry and AECL. Ongoing threats and challenges to the business may characterise 2012 as being a watershed year for the industry. The industry will need to improve all parts of the supply chain such as continuing to raise the long term market awareness, demand, sales and consumption of eggs in a hyper-competitive food market and operating environment through to developing and adopting new technology to increase overall industry productivity and hence sustainability. AECL will be working under and making investments in areas outlined in a refined Strategic Plan that has been developed by industry. We will also be complying to a new Statutory Funding Agreement with the Australian Government. 2012 is the Year of the Farmer and AECL intends to be intimately involved with this national initiative promoting the industry’s Corporate Social Responsibility. Additionally, AECL will see the roll-out of the new Egg Standard among all interested egg producers allowing licensees to boast their high quality systems and best practice processors to current and potential customers as well as regulators. The industry’s on-farm extension program and training programs will move into second gear up-skilling and adding direct value to egg producers recognising the training and rewarding farm workers accordingly. Also, our student education program will be expanded given the high levels of success achieved in 2011 in teaching our next generation of egg lovers to assist breach the growing city/country divide. In terms of managing potential issues, we will continue to ensure freedom of choice is provided to all consumers through the equal presence and respect for all three recognized egg production systems.

Poultry CRC – 2011 achievements T

he Poultry CRC now has 33 participants, including more than 95% of the Australian poultry industry. Research programs have been designed to address the major challenge to achieve sustainable, ethical poultry production for Australia in the face of a growing population and climate change. This involves three programs, each with integrated research, development and education components. • Program 1: Health & Welfare, uses frontier science to deliver poultry health products and evidence-based welfare methodology to industry, • Program 2: Nutrition & Environment, will undertake research to link the fundamental aspects of feeding to environmental outcomes, and • Program 3: Safe & Quality Food Production, is aimed at controlling foodborne illness related to poultry products. Research, education and utilisation activities are now in full swing. Twenty-four research projects were underway during 2011, with 41 students (12 postgraduates, four honours, 25 undergraduates) enrolled across ten of the CRC’s research providers. In addition to these achievements, two interns were employed by end-users, highlighting the success of the CRC’s internship program. The majority of our 24 research projects have two or more collaborating organisations, including many industry participants, with a clear focus on delivering cutting-edge science with practical

Mingan Choct, CEO of Australian Poultry CRC applications for industry. These projects have started to address approximately 80% of the Poultry CRC’s agreed (Commonwealth) milestones. The Poultry CRC’s education program exceeded its planned activities over the past year. It produced 12 books for VET training, with 21 egg industry employees beginning their Certificate III courses in collaboration with a key end-user, the Australian Egg Corporation Limited. In addition, the Teachers’ Resource Kit, developed by the Poultry CRC, has now been sent to more than 380 schools across Australia. Requests continue to flood in, since the kit helps schools teach agriculture in an easy and objective manner. The Poultry CRC also took the initiative to engage end-users in our post gradu-

ate training activities, enabling the majority of our nutrition students to work closely with industry partners during their PhD studies. It is well-known that commercialisation of biotechnology products, such as vaccines, is an arduous journey. This is even more so for concepts at an early stage of development. The Poultry CRC is therefore extremely pleased to report that its first vaccine, Vaxsafe PM, for Pasteurella multocida, is on the market after eight long years of research, development and registration procedures. The Poultry CRC’s public outreach activities achieved a significant milestone with the CRC’s information portal, Poultry Hub (www.poultryhub.org) attracting 60,000 unique visitors per month from all over the world. Many schools, universities, industry, community organisations, and villages in developing countries are frequent users of this website. Submissions for Poultry Hub are most welcome; especially articles that can expand our educational portfolio, or offer new ideas and perspectives on the current challenges facing the poultry industry (contact: admin@poultrycrc.com.au).
