Building Resilience A FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE SUCCESS

Letter from CEO Dear friends, One of the great gifts of my life is that I’ve been in a position to take my passion for prevention and combine it with the perspectives and expertise of others to positively impact systems, communities and families across Tennessee. We are changing lives. We are creating a community of support around families and children that will influence a generation. Your support makes that change possible. This year, thanks to your generosity and fierce belief in our shared mission, we have succeeded in building a more resilient Tennessee, one that understands that investing in children and families now is critical to their future health and prosperity. Together, we are powerful. Together, we are resilient. Together, we can make sure that every child experiences the happy, healthy childhood they deserve. For making this progress possible – thank you. Warm regards,

Kristen Rector President & CEO

Domestic Violence in Tennessee

Of the 78,000 reported cases of domestic violence in TN in 2016, over 28,000 instances were witnessed by a child, or the child was a victim themselves. Children who live in a home where violence is present are at greater risk of experiencing abuse themselves and it impacts their long-term health and well-being.

THIS YEAR OVER

12,000 calls

from individuals in crisis were answered BY our 24/7 statewide

Domestic Violence Helpline Our trained counselors provide caring support and connect callers with the local resources they need, including information about how to get children to safety.

“I have been in the position many of my families are currently in. I was young, pregnant, scared, alone, and week after week trying to find a way to budget that last $5. Not everyone has a mother they can call to ask, ‘Is this normal?’ or a best friend’s shoulder to cry on when times get hard. As a home visitor I can’t come close to fulfilling those critical roles but at least my families will have someone standing behind them cheering them on during their journey to overcome all the obstacles life can throw in the way.” —Morgan, family support worker in Monroe & Polk Counties

Poverty and PCAT’s response

1liveinin 4poverty children in the counties where we have direct service Poverty can lead to isolation, added stress and reduced access to needed resources, which can make children more vulnerable to abuse and neglect.

PCAT family support workers have a unique opportunity to build relationships with the families they work with. We are able to be a bridge between the needs of the families and the local resources that are available, connecting them with the necessary tools to help them create safe, healthy, loving homes for their children.

Home Visiting IS A

wise investment

We are teaching parents how to be parents through evidence-based home visiting programs like Healthy Families TN and Nurturing Parenting. The benefits of home visiting are far-reaching, in both the short and long term.

Long term savings Home visiting programs coach caregivers on positive parenting practices, and set employment goals. As a result, families who participate in these programs engage in fewer negative social behaviors and are less reliant on welfare. Nationally, families in home visiting programs had 48% fewer cases of child abuse and neglect. Last year, 100% of families in PCAT home visiting programs had no substantiated cases of abuse or neglect.

Short term savings Families in home visiting programs are 33% less likely to use the ER as a primary care facility, resulting in Medicaid savings. 90% of families in PCAT home visiting programs have an established health care provider and educated on the importance of well-child visits and preventive care.

WERE BY our 24/7 TooANSWERED few families

statewide Domestic Violence

in Tennessee receive Helpline from individuals in crisis. home visiting services.

Only 2,310 families are served by home visiting programs

(392 of them by PCAT).

Our advocacy efforts resulted in an

increase in state funding

for home visiting.

Our advocacy team has worked tirelessly to secure additional funding for home visiting services in Tennessee. With threats looming to eliminate or reduce federal and state funding for home visiting, we worked in partnership with the Home Visiting Leadership Alliance to educate legislators about the importance of investing in young families and the positive long term economic and social impacts home visiting would have on communities in Tennessee. Recognizing the value of these programs, legislators responded by securing and increasing funds for home visiting programs across the state, giving more Tennessee families access to the support they need.

When parents feel connected in their community, they become less isolated and build up a strong network of support. As part of our programs, we coordinate several "parent parties" throughout the year where parents come together to connect, learn, and play with their children.

We celebrated six graduates from our Healthy Families Tennessee program this year!

Families got to meet Santa and go home with some great gifts at our holiday party in Monroe/Polk County.

Carolyn Remeder (left) and Cindy Frye were honored as our 2018 Unsung Heroes for their dedication to advocating for children and families in their communities. Families in Anderson County, TN came together to connect and learn at a parent party.

The Pinwheel Festival held in Nashville brought the community together to play, learn and create! A summertime splash party for our families in Claiborne County was so much fun!

Our progress this year was possible because of your partnership and your dedication to making every home and every community a safe, loving place for children to live.

Your friendship is moving us toward a brighter future for Tennessee’s children. pcat.org Volunteers from HCA joined our families at the Nashville Zoo
