LETTER FROM THE EDITOR In this issue we highlight some great swimwear and work out options for plus size brides. So often we are made to believe that we don’t have anything in our size for swimwear or athletic gear. And mind I say, that it isn’t that there are no options but shall I say that there aren’t any options that make us look and feel amazing. I feel that the key to empowering someone is to make them feel good. When

we look good, we automatically feel good. I’ve worked hard to make sure that this issue, and our everything in the Pretty Pear Bride Media Publication family do just that. From our magazine to our websites, (yep you caught that plural right….more to come on that) strive to empower plus size women to be their best and look their best. And once that is achieved everything else will follow!

EDITOR’S PICKS F

all is the time of year that I start looking for holiday gifts and really take time off to concentrate on myself and enjoy my family. So I included some great picks to help focus on you and enjoy the holidays with family!

LOVE! WRITE IT The Write the Word Bible journal is unique. With my small business, and three littles running under the same roof, my “quiet time” each day is pretty loud! I prayed one morning for God to give me a simple way to connect with Him, right in the thick of it, and the Write the Word journal was born.

CULTIVATE FAITH Cultivate Faith in your life every day with this set of 7 desk cards. Multiple words of encouragement and grace allow you to swap out a new message each day, or display all of them at once for a pop of color and cheer. 6Spring/Summer 2017 Pretty Pear Bride Magazine

A floor-sweeping tiered skirt completes the bohemian air of a printed jersey dress cinched with smocking at the waist for a flattering blouson silhouette.

GOOD READS As a busy wife, new mother, business owner, and designer, Emily Ley came to a point when she suddenly realized she couldn’t do it all. She needed to simplify her life, organize her days, and prioritize the priorities. She decided to hold herself to a standard of grace rather than perfection. This mantra led to the creation of her bestselling Simplified Planner®, a favorite among busy women everywhere—from mamas to executives and everywhere in between.

Simple Ways to Add Fitness to Your Daily Routine

eing resourceful with your daily routine can deliver big payoffs when it comes to increasing your activity level. Incorporating physical fitness into your everyday activities can save you time and also burn calories, and it doesn’t have to take much time or effort. “For many people, the biggest obstacle to getting more exercise is time,” says Danielle Johnson, physical therapist and wellness physical therapist for the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. “People feel stretched between their career, child care demands and family commitments. Thinking of spending an hour extra at the gym may feel overwhelming.” If you don’t have time to fit in a scheduled workout, try using daily tasks to incorporate fitness, Johnson advises. “You’ll still be able to reap the benefits of exercise by using small bouts of movement throughout the day. Two 10-minute walks, a few sets of stairs and some five-

minute intervals of bodyweight squats, lunges or push-ups can add up to big health benefits.” Here are some tips to get moving throughout the day:

Turn chores into exercise. * Mow the lawn or do some gardening. The physical benefit is good for your health, plus gardening can enhance your mood, and the food you grow offers great nutritional benefits.

* Try bicycling to run errands. Leave the car in the garage and bring out your bike for a quick run to the grocery store. * Turn household cleaning into a mini workout. “For example, mopping floors gives your shoulders and back a workout, and can burn more than 100 calories in just 30 minutes,” Johnson says.

Find fitness opportunities with friends. * Instead of going out for dinner or drinks with friends, do something physical, like taking a walk, going for a bike ride or engaging in a physical activity like tennis or bowling. * Take your dog to the park, or play with them in your own backyard. A game of fetch is not only great exercise for your furry friend - it works your muscles, too. * Join or start a sports team with your friends. Whether it’s softball, basketball or soccer, taking part in a sport you enjoy will improve both your physical and mental well-being.

Stay curious and improve upon what you’re already doing. * Do you already walk daily? Try walking faster or choose a challenging route with hills. * Take up a new summer outdoor sport, such as canoeing, paddle boarding or inline skating. * If there’s a cause you feel passionate about, try training to participate in a run or walk to raise funds. * If you play golf, walk the course and carry your own clubs instead of using a cart and caddy. “Every little bit counts,” Johnson says. “Research suggests that as little as 10 minutes of cardiovascular activity can make a big difference in your health and fitness measures. I often equate health to putting away money for retirement. Putting away savings, even in small amounts, will add up big over time. The same can be said for your health. Investing in opportunities to be active, even for short periods of time, adds up. The key is to be consistent.”

How to Prepare for Spring and Summer Weather By: Kate Oczypok

S

pring is known for its wacky weather—it could be 70 degrees and sunny one day and 45 and blustery the next. Spring is prime wedding season, so we decided to give you some tips from some of the nation’s best wedding planners. Self-described corporate and nuptial ninja, Candy of Candy+Co. Events in Washington, D.C. advises to “plan for the worst but hope for the best.” Her clients meet with her team five weeks from their wedding date and during that walk-through, they create a floor plan for how they hope the day will go and also devise a rain plan for any additional scenarios. That rain plan includes a step-bystep set-up with instructions for each vendor working as part of “Team Wedding” and is confirmed with the venue and each vendor at

least a month out. That way, Candy and her team have most of the answers in advance of any weather issues that they may run in to, like the DJ having a back up generator, and the photographer having an assistant who can hold a flash and an umbrella at the same time. “Rain plans are especially important anytime you’re planning for an outdoor event. This includes a covered space with solid flooring that can be used in case of thunderstorms, wind, or even mud created from rain the previous evening,” Candy said. She advises springtime couples to have rain boots, umbrellas and a bleach pen handy for mud splatters. To be considerate of guests, it’s worth thinking about investing in umbrellas, bug repellant and a self-serve

cool drink station for those steaming hot days. Speaking of unbearably hot days, a good rain plan also considers temperature, Candy said. “No one likes being hot and sticky in their formal wedding wear,” she added. “Consider a portable rental AC Company or some industrial fans. They both tend to be a bit noisy but crank up that music and everyone will be cool on the dance floor!” Crista Tharp of Blissfully Simple Events out of Indiana advises spring brides to consider temperature. “If it is too hot or too cold your guests won’t care how gorgeous everything is, they’ll be uncomfortable and leave early.” Tharp tells brides to make it known on their invites if their wedding will be outdoors so guests can be pre-

Things like “ditch the stilettos as the ceremony will be on grass” or “Please dress casual, lawn games and hayrides will be available” are good ideas. For those hot temperatures, using fans as programs are always good dual function idea. For barn weddings, a basket with flip-flops, sunscreen and bug spray is always ideal.

If it looks like absolutely sweltering heat, Tharp advises to rent spray fans to cool guests off, or just large fans in general. “Guest won’t care if they aren’t beautiful, but they will care if they die of heat stroke,” Tharp added.

Little details like towels to wipe off chairs for outdoor ceremonies are worth discussing with your planner too. Brides should think twice about

Whew! That’s a lot to remember, but worth considering to make your spring wedding the best it can be.

Garbage cans for outdoor weddings should be sprayed with a chili pepper or water spray to keep the bugs and animals away.

Last Minute DIY Tips for Backyard Hosting 24 Spring/Summer 2017 Pretty Pear Bride Magazine

S

ummer means outdoor entertaining. Whether you’re hosting a wedding reception, a family reunion or a birthday party, you’ll want to make the backyard get together memorable. Here are some quick DIY ideas to help you get ready for a fun, stress-free gathering.

feet. As a general rule, wait until your grass is 3 inches tall before mowing, then cut it to 2 inches in height. Trimming no more than one-third of the blade length reduces stress on the grass and leaves enough leaf to protect the roots from the sun.

Lawn Prep: A healthy green lawn

the table arrangements - linens, tableware, flowers - you’ll want to think about creating a comfortable ambiance for your guests. Here are a few ideas to consider:

is an inviting setting for outdoor activities. If your lawn isn’t quite up to snuff, a little last minute maintenance can help. Following are some tips from Grass Seed USA, a coalition of American grass seed farmers and academics: * Fix bare or thin spots. You may not need as much time as you think to overseed thin or bare patches - some seed germinates in just a few days. Ask the turf specialists at your garden store or university extension office for help in selecting the right seed. Seed during the early morning or evening hours, then water lightly but regularly, keeping the reseeded areas damp until the new grass grows in. * Don’t overwater. On average, a lawn needs about an inch of water per week, from rainfall or irrigation. Unless it’s very hot or you have good soil drainage, don’t water for two or three days before your party. A soggy lawn might ruin your guests’ shoes, and furniture legs could sink into the ground. * Leave a little length. Don’t mow the grass too short before the event - a little extra length will provide more cushioning for the soil and your guests’

Creating the ambiance: Beyond

* Throw some shade. Set up umbrellas or a shade sail if your gathering is in the heat of the day and you don’t have much natural shade. * Illuminate the area. If your get together is in the evening, create a welcoming atmosphere by setting out candles or lanterns and winding twinkle lights around trees in your backyard. If you have the space, build a simple fire pit where you can gather after dinner to make s’mores and tell stories. Transform planters and pots into nightlights using glow-in-the-dark paint. * Make it cozy. In addition to traditional seating, set out blankets, pillows and rugs on the lawn. Set up a low table and place rugs on the grass next to it to create a magical Moroccan evening. * Keep bugs at bay. Annoying flies or hungry mosquitoes can take a lot of the fun out of an outdoor party. Light citronella candles to deter mosquitoes, or make natural DIY bug spray for your

Make it Cozy

guests using essential oils such as peppermint or eucalyptus.

Choosing activities: Your get-together likely already has some built-in activities (eating, for one!), but depending on the type of event, you may want to have a few additional distractions planned - especially if there are kids at the party. Try a few of these: * Revive old favorites. Classic lawn games like croquet or lawn bowling are easy to set up and are great icebreakers if not everyone knows each other. You can mix things up and create your own variations on the rules. * Spray-paint your grass. Use groundmarking spray to create giant game boards directly on your lawn. Twister, checkers, tic-tac-toe - use your imagination! * Play putt putt. Set up a miniature golf course with plastic cups as targets, and make challenging obstacles using whatever random objects you have on hand. One of the great advantages of entertaining outdoors is that it’s usually easier and less stressful than trying to fit a large group into your home. So keep things simple and don’t worry if you don’t have time for elaborate preparations - your backyard will naturally do most of the decorating and ambiance creation for you, and you’ll have plenty of options for outdoor activities for kids of all ages.
