mindless stream of brutality and evil, it’s nice to know there’s an author working who prefers the classic, psychological thrillers that were invented by the likes of Edgar Allan Poe. Too many authors in the horror genre, it seems, write with a Hollywood movie deal as their ultimate goal and not for the more noble reward of making the reader thinks as much as making his hair stand on end. Elizabethtown author Chet Williamson says he writes from “a moral standpoint” and not for the enjoyment of creating yet another dime store “slasher” story. “I don’t want to produce any of those typical horror novels that you see so often. There’s and immense amount of garbage in the horror shop. It’s stuff written just to scare people and that’s about all the deeper it gets. I’ve tried to go a little beyond that.” If Williamson seems happy to disassociate himself from much of the other fiction that exists in his field, it can be attributed to the fact that he deplores the random violence, which appears in popular “slice and dice” novels. He would like to see a return, in fact, to the days when horror fiction was actually meant to be comforting as well as entertaining. “When someone reads a classic horror story,” explains Williamson, “He knows that the cross will stop the vampire and the silver bullet will stop the werewolf. There’s a reassurance about classic horror novels that pats you on the back and says everything is going to be okay.” It is that kind of conspicuous respect for his readership that has allowed the 42-year-old Rheems native to maintain a level of quality in his work and earn the admiration of his peers. Just last June, in fact, Williamson had the distinguished honor of acting as the master of ceremonies for the Horror Writers Of America Bram Stoker Awards. The literary prize, the horror equivalent of the Oscar, has eluded Williamson thus far, despite four nominations for his short fiction over the last three years.

Camp Chickiewee Memories Will Be All That Remain “Camp Chickiewee was a great place to take your troops camping whether you were a new leader with few camping skills or an old pro,” says Kathy Burkholder, former leader of Girl Scout Troop 1579, Middletown. “The new leader had the well-marked trials to follow, fire rings all ready, pavilions to do crafts under, meadows to play in, and warm dry accommodations complete with kitchen. “Experienced leaders had all the above plus acres of flora and fauna, plenty of room for tent camping, outdoor cooking, hiking and nature projects,” she adds. “The camp was also close enough to use as a base while visiting Hershey, Elizabethtown, or even Harrisburg. “I always enjoyed camping at Chickiewee with my troops over the years. It didn’t have showers and flush toilets, but it had all the wonders Mother Nature could provide. I’m glad I had the chance to experience it.” Like others in Girl Scouting, Kathy has already started talking about Camp Chickiewee in the past tense. The camp, which is 30 to 40 years old, is scheduled to be closed by mid-September. Seventy-eight acres in size, it is located in both Londonderry and Derry Townships off Stoverdale Road. According to Howard Osterling, director of properties, and Simone Adamsky Biacchi, director of communications for the Hemlock Girl Scout Council, Camp Chickiewee along with four other properties was sold following a 10-years study of what volunteers want in the Girl Scout program. As a result of the study, a greater emphasis on yearround camping developed. The result, there are now four main camp sites which serve the Hemlock Council.
