BREAD IN COMMON, FREMANTLE

M

y perfect breakfast or brunch location must have outdoor seating in case I take along my fur child, Chorizo. Add in good coffee, friendly staff and an ever-changing menu that you could visit each week and still find new surprises on your plate, and I’m a fan. A weekend favourite is Bread in Common, a huge, heritagelisted warehouse that’s become an institution in Freo, where produce is locally sourced, grown and is seasonal. Outside there is a small alfresco area with a kitchen garden under the shade of passionfruit vines, perfect for my four-legged friend and I to enjoy breakfast. Bread in Common’s heart is its bakery and its wood-fired ovens, called Hansel and Gretel, making the best bread in Fremantle. The French fruit toast is my pick

and heaven for those with a sweet tooth. I choose this indulgence with its strawberries and vanilla cream cheese on this visit and it’s like a warm hug, the perfect match with delicious coffee. With flavours changing depending on what produce is in season you could get lucky and enjoy French fruit toast with grilled peaches or poached pears on a visit. I’ve also enjoyed the waffles served with seasonal fruit and honeycomb on other occasions. If you are more of a savoury breakfast lover, a corn and zucchini hash with fennel, avocado and white bean purée might be a good start to your day. For the ‘avo’ aficionados there’s usually a green option on the menu, and those that like a good fry-up can always get bacon and eggs a variety of ways with that sensational housemade
