iding a camel along Cable Beach is something that should be on everybody’s bucket list,” says Alison Bird, one of Broome’s most respected camel handlers. “There’s something special about camels. Their personalities seem distinct, wise, playful and engaging.” Alison first encountered these fascinating creatures while working on a cattle station in the East Pilbara. “The station next door accidentally mustered a camel with the cattle,” says Alison. “I went to have a look at him and it was love at first sight. I had my hands on the railings of the yard when the camel came over and gently nibbled my fingers. “I bought him and slowly got to know him and train him, all by trial and error.” It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair between Alison and these magnificent animals. After arriving in Broome, in 1994 with just three camels Alison started Broome

Camel Safaris. She has slowly grown her herd, collecting and training camels that were rejects, orphaned, unwanted or mishandled, which now happily carry her customers on Cable Beach. As they watch the stunning colours of the setting sun, the shadows from the camels create a masterpiece on the sand.

It’s the kind of magic that causes thousands of photos to be taken and many Instagram accounts updated – this is one of those moments that will never be forgotten. Enjoy a pre-sunset or sunset camel tour along the iconic Cable Beach. Book at visitbroome.com.au/members/ broome-camel-safaris
