Rehearsal Dinners 101: Choosing the Perfect Venue The rehearsal dinner is a casual or formal gathering for the wedding party before the wedding that provides an opportunity for both families to get to know one another in a fun, relaxed environment. It’s a time to mingle, do a gift exchange, offer toasts, and provide some last-minute instruction about the actual wedding details. Rehearsal dinners vary as much as the wedding itself. They can be formal banquets or garden parties, casual picnics, or even a BBQ.
WHO TO INVITE Turn the dinner into a fabulous welcome party - if your wedding is mostly local

friends and family but a few key people traveled far to come to your wedding, extend the invitation to them as a thank you for their extra effort. If you’re throwing a destination wedding or a party where at least half of the guests are from out of town, show your appreciation by inviting everyone to some kind of night-before festivity.
WHERE TO HAVE IT A sit-down dinner at a hotel ballroom or nice restaurant is the norm, but there’s no right or wrong when you plan your rehearsal dinner. Restaurants are ideal for
many because couples can focus on the more meaningful details - knowing that the food is taken care of! However, relaxing in a nice backyard, at an art museum, or even on the beach are perfectly acceptable locations. It just depends on your style and budget.

WHEN TO INVITE YOUR GUESTS To help your guests manage their schedules, send out invitations with, or shortly after, your wedidng invitations. This will not only help your guests plan their travel, but ensure timely RSVPs.
HOW TO INVITE YOUR GUESTS If your rehearsal dinner will be at a high end restaurant, hotel ballroom, etc., you should send formal invitations. If, on the other hand, your rehearsal dinner will be more casual, such as an intimate gathering at your future in-laws home, then you can be more casual with your invitations. You can send e-vites or send DIY invites. Make sure it’s clear to your guests where they need to be and when. Your guests will want to dress appropriately, so details are important!

6 Things to Consider When
Choosing a Wedding Cake!
CHECK WITH THE VENUE Some wedding venues don’t allow you to bring in an outside cake. It’s important to check with your wedding venue first, and find out if there’s a fee for not getting your cake through them. You’d be surprised how much it can cost per slice to make arrangements to bring in your own cake.
SIZE IT CAREFULLY You should have a good idea of how many guests you expect at your reception. Let your cake decorator know that, as well as how confident you are in that number. You want to avoid getting more cake than you need, but you also don’t want to be short handed. Take the advice of your cake decorator on this topic. They do this for a living!
SHOP IT AROUND Wedding cakes are an important part of your wedding, and like everything else, you should shop around for the best service. The best service isn’t always just who has the lowest price. You want to know how easy it is to communicate with the cake decorator. You’ll also want to read ample reviews to know how others feel about their experiences.
THE FROSTING Fondant does NOT replace buttercream on cakes. It is a beautiful ‘skin’ placed over the

outside layer of buttercream or ganache, providing a perfectly smooth surface with a stronger structure, more heat resistance, & a whole new world of decorating options. Without a smooth layer of frosting underneath, fondant won’t stick to the cake properly & will show every imperfection. Fondant does not affect the taste or the inside of the cake at all, so design the outside of the cake to your heart’s content. A good baker will have several generous layers of buttercream filling between the cake layers as well as on the outside underneath the fondant. Very few weddingsized cake slices even touch the outside of the cake, so it’s important that the inside has a nice cake-to-buttercream ratio. With cakes, as with people, it’s what’s INSIDE that counts!
WEATHER & LOCATION Your options may be limited based on if you’re having an indoor or outdoor wedding.If you’re having your reception in July at a outdoor wedding venue, then you’ll need to avoid buttercream or whipped cream frosting. Nothing is worse than an icky mess that doesn’t hold up in warmer weather.
VENDOR COLLABORATION Many couples choose to put fresh flowers on their wedding cakes. If this is the case, you need to make sure your florist and cake decorator are able to communicate. Make sure you know whether it’s the florist or the cake decorator that’s going to add these final touches.

You’re Engaged! What Next? BY MICHELLE LEO EVENTS, CO-AUTHORED BY EMILY DRIGGS AND MACKENZIE COBURN You’re engaged! CONGRATS! Take some time and enjoy this monumental moment! Go get yourself a killer manicure and take that ring selfie! Call your friends and family to gush about the news or throw a surprise engagement party. Binge watch some Say Yes to the Dress episodes while flipping through a bunch of wedding magazines. Then get down to business and plan the wedding of your dreams. For many engaged couples, wedding planning can seem like a daunting process, especially given the short engagement period for most LDS couples (just four months on average). So, where do you start?! Don’t worry, take a deep breath – we’ve got you covered. Here is a list of the most important tasks to check off your todo list early. We recommend getting started as soon as you say “Yes!” and working as quickly as possible to ensure you get the big day of your dreams! 1. SIZE & INSURE YOUR RING. Sorry, this will probably be the least fun part of your wedding planning, but it could totally save your butt in the long run and it’s quick and easy to take care of.

2. GO DRESS SHOPPING. Let’s admit it: this will probably be the most fun to-do item on your list. Do some serious online browsing and screenshot any dress styles that speak to you. Familiarize yourself with necklines, silhouettes, and fabrics. Also, take into consideration the time of year and location of your wedding. Are you planning a beach wedding during the summer months? Go with a lightweight, flowing fabric. A rustic, winter wedding? Pick a heavier fabric and accessorize it with faux fur! Keep in mind that wedding dresses typically need to be special ordered and often altered to fit LDS dress standards. Be sure to make bridal boutique appointments soon after your engagement to give yourself as much time as possible to get that dress of your dreams. 3. BRAINSTORM & DISCUSS. Sit down with your fiancé and discuss your ideal wedding day. What time of year do you each love? Is there particular location or venue that has a special place in your heart, such as the place you first met or the location of your first date? What are each of your must haves?
4. SET A BUDGET. Decide how much you and your fiancé will personally be spending on the wedding and figure out whether or not your families will contribute. Figure out your ballpark budget to decide if you can afford to hire a planner. If you’re able to afford a planner, your planner has the skills and expertise to help you fine-tune your budget and decipher how much your must-haves will cost. Your planner will then do the math (you’re welcome; no one likes math) to establish your remaining budget and allocate the funds accordingly.
6. DRAFT THE GUEST LIST. Ask your parents for their ideal guest list, preferably having them prioritize their guests in order of “must be there or else…” to “would like to have attend, but we won’t disown you if they don’t get an invite”. List your ideal guest list and have your fiancé do the same. Cross reference the guests on your lists with your parents’ and estimate how many people total. Although the list does not have to be set in stone in the early stages of wedding planning, having a rough estimate will give you a good starting point when looking at venues and caterers.

5. SCHEDULE THE TEMPLE. Your time at the temple will be the most important part of your wedding, as well as the most influential factor when planning the rest of your big day. You’ll want to schedule this part of your wedding early on so that all other decisions can be finalized without the worry of whether
or not the time, date, and location of the temple sealing will work into your overall timeline and logistics for the day. Keep in mind that the date and location of the temple will have the biggest impact on the reception venue you select.

7. BOOK YOUR VENUE. The venue is the canvas for your wedding. It will influence almost every aspect of your wedding; from the background in your pictures and the guest list, down to the color of your table linens and floral. Pick a place that will fit the design and feel that want. Do you want an intimate space that will allow for sit-down dinner service and or do you want a lofty feel with food stations set up around the room? Schedule visits to possible venues and go with a list of questions, and then book early! Venues can book a year (or more) in advance, especially during peak wedding season. 8. SET A DATE. One of the first questions you’ll get asked as a newly engaged couple is “When’s the big day?!” While the date seems like something you have to nail down first, don’t! The main reason we suggest not nailing down the big day earlier on our list is because you’ll have to schedule the temple AND find a venue that is available on the same date or weekend. Plus, what if you fall in love with a venue, but your date isn’t available? Talk about a major bummer… With that being said, pick a time of year you’re thinking about getting hitched and then visit venues, making sure to get a calendar of their availability. In the meantime, just give your friends and family the go-to statement of, “We’re just so excited to be engaged right now!” However, if you’re planning to say your “I dos” during a busy time of year, such as around the holidays, try and nail down

the date as soon as possible and send out Save the Date cards to friends and family so they can all plan accordingly to be there for the big event. 9. HIRE A PLANNER. Admit it – you’ve always wanted your own personal superhero. A wedding planner is a superhero in heels. If your budget allows, hiring a wedding planner can be a huge life saver! There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes of wedding planning and execution that brides don’t know about – and it’s better that way. A planner can suggest reputable vendors, such as photographers and florists, that will help bring your dream wedding to life. Wedding planners rope in all the details and ask all the questions that you may not think or know to ask. Having a wedding planner on your team (for at least month-of coordination) will be especially helpful given the shorter timeframe typical of LDS weddings. 10. BOOK KEY PLAYERS. Photographers and videographers get snatched up quickly, so book them first! Decide on your caterer (if your venue does not offer in-house catering), your florist, and your band or DJ. 11. ENJOY THE PROCESS! Your engagement is a special time in both of your lives. Revel in your happiness and share it with loved ones. But most of all, make sure the two of you stay connected, take time to laugh, and remind each other why you’re choosing each other in the first place.

It’s about looking like yourself but more put together. You’ll only have pictures to look back to remember that day, and you don’t want to at them and not recognize yourself. Enhance your favorite features. Try to avoid super trendy looks and stick with timeless, classic makeup styles (trends fade and you’ll be left with wedding pics that look super outdated). Your wedding day isn’t the time to try out new makeup looks. If you never wear winged eyeliner, your wedding day isn’t the time to do it.
YES! There are a lot of photographers in Utah, and they each take their own approach. The last thing you want to do is hire a photographer who has zero experience in weddings, but just because they’re cheap you want to. Remember the phrase, “you get what you pay for” is a very true statement! One of the best ways to get an honest review about your potential wedding photographer is to see all the photos they are tagged in and message that client asking them their experience! You can also go to the photographer’s Instagram feed and find photos of their clients and message them as well.
