Remembering Maggie Atcher 1927-2016

Maggie Atcher’s goal was to sing on the concert circuit; instead, with her clear soprano voice, she was the wife and muse to Bob Atcher, himself a singing cowboy and later Schaumburg’s second village president. More than anyone else, Maggie Atcher, sharing her love of music, culture and the arts with Bob, inspired him to plan for a cultural center here in Schaumburg, our Prairie Center for the Arts. As Schaumburg’s first lady and the first chair of Schaumburg’s Cultural Commission, Maggie played a key role in making that dream a reality. In 2006, the Prairie Center’s auditorium was named the Maggie Atcher Theatre in her honor, and we remain indebted to the cultural legacy she left behind.

HOLLYWOOD AND WORLD WAR II Sunday, October 9, 2016 – 2pm

During the World War II era, the movie industry was characterized by rapid, formulaic, almost factory-like mass production. When a particular innovation proved commercially successful, it was sure to be replicated in other movies in short order. Lecturer Edward Finch explores the emergence of the combat film genre, its evolution up to the present, and what it can teach us about American cultural history.

REMEMBERING MARSHALL FIELDS AT CHRISTMAS Sunday, November 27, 2016 – 2pm

For more than 150 years, Marshall Field and Co. reigned as Chicago’s leading department store. Basing the title presentation on her own book, author and lecturer Leslie Goddard traces the store’s history from its beginnings in 1852 to its demise in 2006. Photographs, ads, postcards, and memorabilia trace the store’s cherished traditions - the Walnut Room Christmas tree, the legendary window displays, and, of course, Frango Mints.

A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM: ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S ABIDING CALL Sunday, February 12, 2017 – 2pm

Kevin Wood is not only one of Illinois’ leading experts on Abraham Lincoln, he is also one of the most authentic portrayers of the country’s 16th president. In this special program, Wood becomes Lincoln (in period attire) to discuss the president’s life and the country’s history from Independence through the Civil War. The program will be followed by a Q&A with Wood.

The Prairie Center Box Office is located in the front of the lobby, immediately to your left when entering the west doors. The box office is open weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm and one-and-a-half hours before curtain on performance days. Phone orders can be placed by calling (847) 895-3600 from 8 am to 6 pm during regular business hours. Online ticket orders can be placed any time at www.prairiecenter.org. Tickets ordered by mail or phone will be mailed to you if your order is received at least seven days before the first event for which you’ve purchased tickets. This allows adequate time to get the tickets to you. Orders received later than this will be held at the box office. Tickets can be picked up during regular box office hours or upon arrival at the Prairie Center for the performance. Tickets ordered online can be printed at home for your convenience. Student ticket prices are good for students of any age with a valid student I.D. Card.
