University of Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars TRAC History

The Recreation and Athletic Center is one of the newest facilities in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opening in 2008. It is also the newest athletic facility in the city of Springfield and considered one of the crown jewels in NCAA Division II. The first event in TRAC was Sept. 28, 2008 when the volleyball defeated Stephens College 3-0. The Prairie Star volleyball team has a career 14-12 record in TRAC. TRAC is a 74,000 square foot building with three collegiate-length basketball and volleyball courts. It also has a full service fitness center that features a three-lane elevated running track, two racquetball courts that can also convert to squash courts. The recreation and athletic department offices are also housed in the TRAC, along with a state of the art athletic training offices. The training room offers four tables for student-athletes and a whirlpool. Along with hosting intercollegiate athletics and intramurals for UIS, TRAC has also hosted two sell outs for Illinois Boys 2A Super Sectionals. The girls 2A super sectional has also been at near capacity in the last two seasons as well. UIS has also hosted the GLVC Championship Final Four in 2010.

UIS is equally proud of the caring attitudes of our athletes. In 2010-2011, Prairie Stars athletes donated hundreds of hours of work to charitable projects including: Holiday Stars Canned Food Drive, Ball-Chatham Fun Fair, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, and Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In 2010-2011, UIS athletes were named GLVC Players of the Week and several players were All-Conference selections in their respective sports. A total of 93 athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll for having GPAs of 3.0 or better. Of those 93, 31 had a GPA of 3.5 and six earned 4.0.

Feel the promise of UIS athletics and build on our past (we have three national championships). The Prairie Stars compete in NCAA Division II as a member of the highly competitive Great Lakes Valley Conference. Your teammates will share your passion for sport and your coaches will truly care about your success as both an athlete and a student.

Springfield is a regional medical destination, with two full-service hospitals and multi-specialty health centers and clinics.

It’s easy to get around Springfield by car. Rush hour is virtually non-existent. For students who don’t plan to bring a car, the university is on the metro bus route. You can easily get to downtown or to area shopping centers, including White Oaks Mall. For students seeking a getaway, St. Louis is less than 90 minutes away and Chicago is 3 ½ hours.

Transportation

Springfield possesses the energy that comes with being the state capital of Illinois balanced by a relaxed atmosphere defined by a charming downtown and the priceless historic sites that tell the story of the nation’s greatest president.

We’ve been called the quintessential Midwestern city. Not too big, not too small. Friendly people who value their public university and genuinely welcome the students who move here every August.
