K

eeping kids active during the summer months isn’t simply a matter of physical exercise. Ensuring that a young person’s creative and artistic muscles remain flexed can be critical during those months when school theater, music and arts programs are dark. Indeed, thanks to a wealth of programs available across Boulder County, kids have a variety of options when it comes to remaining artistically engaged, even when school stages are on hiatus.

AIRBORNE GYMNASTICS

Airborne Gymnastics in Longmont (airbornegym.com)

combines the joy of physical movement with the catharsis of creative expression. With classes for all ages, Airborne Gymnastics offers students of all backgrounds and abilities the opportunity to develop the ability to express themselves creatively – in a decidedly physical way. While the facility offers plenty in the way of traditional gymnastic courses, their summer schedule also includes trampoline and tumbling classes; “NinjaZone” curriculum that combines gymnastics, martial arts, obstacle course training and freestyle movement; and dance-themed instruction. Similarly, Boulder-based Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance troupe (frequentflyers.org), reinvents the possibilities when it comes to physical education. With a curriculum that allows students the opportunity to study aerial dance via fabric, trapeze, sling and other methods, Frequent Flyers offers a foundational route to a stunning form of creative expression. The troupe’s guiding mission is to “create and promote the magic of aerial dance through performance and education,” and students get the opportunity to see an award-winning, professionally recognized aerial troupe at work.
