Best Cuisine
American
FLAGSTAFF HOUSE RESTAURANT
1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, 303.442.4640; flagstaffhouse.com
Flagstaff House Restaurant is a near-perennial winner as Best American Restaurant. But what does “American” mean, when it’s served on a plate? It’s a lot like the American experience, explains Scott Monette, general manager and co-owner along with his brother and Executive Chef, Mark Monette. “Our kitchen draws from a lot of different cultural and culinary influences. The preparation and techniques might be Italian, but the ingredients are very local and seasonal. There is often a French influence, due to the years Mark spent as a chef in France,” Scott Monette says. Enjoy late-summer dishes brimming with fruit flavors, and seasonal cocktails from the bar (we’re not even mentioning the incredible wine cellar and travel-guide-worthy views). The menu is different each night, to take advantage of the day’s best harvest of the best ingredients. There is always a surprise or two. We got to take a peek at the Fall menu. Expect plums, pheasant… and brilliance. Runner Up: Oak at Fourteenth, 1400 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.3622; oakatfourteenth.com

CHINA GOURMET
China is the fourth largest country in the world. And we think we’ve found the fourth largest menu in the world – at China Gourmet. Hold on to your green tea, because there are nearly a hundred choices. The good news is, you can’t go wrong here. Even the soup list is long (keep that in mind for cool Fall nights ahead… mmm, soup!). Maybe ditch General Tso this time, for a private date with a spicy plate of Ginger Scallion Shrimp or Chicken Snow Peas? Tso good! OK, go ahead and order your standby favorite, sweet and spicy Orange Chicken. Rice and an appetizer are included in every order. You want it. You deserve it. China Gourmet! Runner Up: May Wah Restaurant, 2500 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.499.8225; maywah.net
BRASSERIE TEN TEN
Come live La Vie En Rose at Brasserie Ten Ten. Commence with Fruits de Mer oysters and mussels or hors d’oeuvres, then leisurely order your entrée. Truite Amandine for fish lovers, or a Poulet dish with seasonal haricots verts, perhaps. Or check out the Brasserie’s Canard Lyonnaise duck confit. Zut alors! Of course you want the Steak Frites. Don’t miss the desserts, from Tortes and Macarons to Crème Brûlée. Brasserie Ten Ten also serves an amazing weekend brunch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with fresh patisserie from the bakery, crepes, eggs and light sandwiches. Totally magnifique, since 2003. CURRY-N-KABOB
A lot of people in Boulder really love Indian cuisine. The enticing mix of vegetables, meats, and savory and sweet spices is hard to beat. Curry-NKebob uses fresh ingredients and prepares your dishes to order in 10 to 15 minutes. Everything is gluten and MSG free. The Curries, Kormas and Kebobs are delicious. The Tandoori dishes are tender and succulent. And the Roti and Nan bread aren’t afterthoughts. The Khan family is from Bangladesh, but they have also owned and operated several popular British curry houses. Dine-in lunch and dinner always feature eight different options, and half of these are vegetarian. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Runner Up: Taj Mahal III, 1075 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, Suite 145, 303.926.0999; tajmahal3.com September 25, 2016

CARELLI’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO
Bravo, Carelli’s, you’ve done it again! It’s hard to beat this combination of leisurely dining, a delicious menu and skillful presentation. You may feel like a patron of the arts when you visit Carelli’s Ristorante Italiano. “We pay a lot of attention to the ‘theater’ of fine dining,” says Owner Greg Carelli. “That experience comes from the warm woods, the Spagoinspired color palette, the music and the soft lighting.” It’s a perfect setting for what is to come, no matter what you order. “Our menu has changed very little since we opened,” Carelli says. Fresh fish is on the daily menu, as well as wonderful pastas and risottos. The Secondis are second to none: fresh mussels, shrimp, veal and steaks. Artisan pizzas and paninis are perfetto when you don’t want a full entrée. “We’ve also become sort of a ‘CU Central’ hangout here during football and basketball season, with our live radio show on KOA. Lots of alumni join us for dinner.” Fall is an especially enjoyable time to sit by the open fireplaces on the deck for drinks, antipasti and good times. EFRAIN’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT & CANTINA
Efrain’s is like a family with three different cooks, who all know how to cook up great Northern Chihuahua-style Mexican food. One has a little trick he does with garlic, one really rocks the rellenos, and the third is a master of freshness. But they all cook in the same style, and that style is good! Each Efrain’s is individually owned and managed, but the authentic approach is at work at every location. The original, in Lafayette, opened more than 20 years ago. Efrain’s thanks the many fans that keep coming back for the Best Mexican food in Boulder County. Runner Up: Agave Mexico Bistro & Tequila House, 2845 28th St., Boulder, 303.444.2922; agavecolorado.com

ALOY THAI CUISINE
2720 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.440.2903; aloythai.com
Authenticity counts. That’s the word at Aloy Thai Cuisine, where traditional home style Thai cuisine is served daily. The 2015 runner-up Aloy now takes top place this time around, for its flavorful curries, drunken noodles and can’t-go-wrong choice, Pad Thai. Aloy Thai’s team of five chefs make sure every taste and morsel are as delectable as the restaurant’s inspiration (Aloy is a Thai word for “delicious”). Gluten free and vegetarian dishes are always available, but sorry… you have to go somewhere else to get your MSG. Order Sweet Sticky Rice and Mango for a perfect finish. You’ll like the reasonable prices, too. Daily lunch specials from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. are an excellent way to get to know Aloy Thai. And then, you know… you’ll be back for sure.
Where else do cilantro, lemongrass, ginger, tamarind and chilies come together to create such magic on a plate? Chez Thuy’s menu is like a travelogue of tastes. There’s a bit of Indonesia, France, Thailand and China in every bite. For starters, we counted more than 20 appetizers. Do you like salads? They go way past mixed greens and veggies here. Popular entrees include Hotpot, seafood curries, Tamarind Shrimp and Vietnamese stir-fry. Chez Thuy has been cooking up a loyal fanbase since 1993, thanks to the guidance of Owner Thuy Le. The Pho is satisfying, flavorful and good for you. It’s a complex delicacy that can’t be hurried. Traditionally, it’s morning comfort food, breakfast in a bowl. Good pho broth is clear and spicy. First, sip and savor. Then dig in to the noodles, the herbs and the meats or tofu. Pho came from Hanoi, but it’s right at home in Boulder. Runner Up: Vina Pho & Grill, 1630 30th St., Boulder, 303.444.1809; facebook.com/ vinaphogrill/?ref=page_internal
Runner Up: Busaba, 133 S. McCaslin Blvd., Unit H, Louisville, 303.665.0330; busabaco.com

KT’S BBQ
Kirk and Tricia Jamison opened KT’s more than 20 years ago and we’re glad they did. Memphisstyle BBQ means peppery, vinegary sauces, tangy coleslaw and dry-rubbed pork ribs that make you come back for more. Best-seller The Pig Pile is a generous serving of tender pulled pork on a fresh baked roll, brushed with Kirk’s Memphis sauce. The Big Bird is a tasty roll piled high with smoked chicken and dabbed with Tricia’s Texas sauce. The Beef Brisket and Hot Links are proof that you’re in the right place for the Best Barbecue experience. Order your sandwich “Elvis” style and they put some slaw on your sandwich, too. Sides include Killer Beans and Red Skinned Mashers, and save some room for a Brownie or piece of Key Lime Pie. Little known fact: You can get breakfast at the Broadway location (like the Southern Grits bowl, Biscuits & Gravy, Breakfast Burritos and more). LARKBURGER
Not many burgers have whitetablecloth provenance. But the Larkburger story started at Vail’s Larkspur Restaurant, where haut cuisine rubs elbows with high country schussing. “There’s definitely a fine dining influence at work here,” says Travis Roach, area manager for Larkburger. The cooks don’t just slap a patty on the grill here. Preparation techniques befit the ingredients. The Larkburger, made with tasty Black Angus beef, is by far the best seller, Roach says. But the Chicken Burger (adobo grilled chicken breast, crispy jalapeño, lettuce, tomato, onion, fresh cilantro and chipotle sauce) is a close second. The Truffle Burger and sushi-grade Tuna Burger offer delicious alternatives when you want to try something new. Get your healthy greens with one of four salads on the menu, or indulge in a Five Dollar Shake. At Larkburger, they say Every Bite Matters. And they mean it! Runner Up: World Famous Dark Horse Bar and Grill, 2922 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.442.8162; darkhorsebar.com
Illegal Pete’s founder Pete Turner says he wanted to create a place with a fun atmosphere, good energy and great music. And what’s more fun than Illegal Pete’s when you’re hungry? The Hill in Boulder was the first location, and the college culture vibe has carried through to every new location since then. The staff is friendly, the tunes are righteous, and when you leave you’ll still have some change in your pocket. Breakfast, lunch and dinner… the food is healthy, fast and bodaciously bueno! Your order is made with all-natural, hormone-free meats from Creekstone Farms, preservative-free tortillas, and a farmer’s market worth of fresh veggies. Whether you are a thirsty scofflaw or just honestly hungry, you’re gonna like Illegal Pete’s. Runner Up: Efrain’s Mexican Restaurant, 101 E. Cleveland St., Lafayette, 303.666.7544; 1630 N. 63rd St., Boulder, 303.440.4045; 451 S. Pratt Parkway, Longmont, 720.494.0777; efrainsrestaurant.com

How long would it take to enjoy all the flavors at Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato? If you tasted a different flavor every day, it would take nearly three years! That’s a lot of flavors (they have more than 50 different choices at a time). Which flavor do you favor? Top scoop honors go to Salted Caramel Oreo ice cream, while gelato fans say the gluten-free Almond is the best. Speaking of the best, Glacier has won the bragging rights for Best Ice Cream several times before. Maybe it’s the natural ingredients and the innovative flavors? We suggest you discuss among yourselves over a scoop or two. I scream, you scream, we all scream for Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato. PIZZERIA LOCALE
1730 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.442.3003; localeboulder.com
Elegance and pizza might not seem like two words that naturally go together, but anyone who’s dined at Pizzeria Locale knows it’s indeed the perfect pairing. Since 2011, the restaurant has served classic Napoletana pizza in an “elegantly casual” setting with a top-shelf selection of beer, wine and amarobased cocktails. Pizzeria Locale partners with some of Italy’s finest producers and Colorado’s family farms to ensure taste and quality of ingredients never falters. “The Back of House/Front of House integration and support that everyone has for one another is a great driver,” says Chef di Cucina Pat Kerzetski. “Not only do we focus on putting forth quality and delicious food, but we are also always thinking about our guests.” Seasonal sources change regularly. Rosse (red) pizza choices include, for example, the Amatriciana (tomato sauce, guanciale, red onion, oregano, pecorino, calabrian chili), of which all proceeds go to Italy’s Red Cross earthquake relief efforts. Prefer Bianchi? The Fiore di Zucca is topped with squash blossom, summer squash, shallot, ricotta, parsley, lemon and pecorino. Delizioso! Runner Up: Abo’s Pizza, 637 S. MAD GREENS
1805 29th St., Suite 1144, Boulder, 720.496.4157; madgreens.com
“Fresh just tastes better,” said MAD Greens Cofounder and Chief Culinary Officer Dan Long when asked why he thought his restaurant had won the honor of Best Salad. In contrast to eateries that describe their food as fresh when it’s in fact not, MAD Greens’ main ingredients are made from raw food that was chopped, baked, and grilled by hand in the restaurant. MAD Greens is all about creativity with seasonal dishes and yummy on-trend flavor combinations, too. The company sources locally whenever possible from produce that was still in the field just two days before ending up on a MAD Greens plate. Long added: “We take a lot of pride in taking care of our guests and making sure they’re enjoying the limited time they have to grab a quick, healthy bite with us.” Runner Up: Modern Market, 1600 28th St., Suite 1212, Boulder, 303.440.0476; modernmarket.com

SUSHI ZANMAI
1221 Spruce St., Boulder, 303.440.0733; sushizanmai.com
Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar is among the 25 Best Seafood Restaurants as determined by Travel & Leisure Magazine, and Boulder loves it, too. Jax is also the first restaurant in Colorado to partner with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, which ensures that every ounce of seafood on their menu is responsibly sourced. Coastless and landlocked? No problem. Jax gets this delicious seafood jet-fresh, every morning, and its chefs pair it with the best local produce. “We would not be here if not for the continued support from our customers,” says General Manager Vanessa Lucio. “We are in this business to bring fine dining and fun times to our friends in Boulder and beyond, and their seal of approval means that we are doing a good job.”
Sushi Zanmai does sushi so well that Boulderites keep coming back for the stellar Nigiri, Sashimi, combinations, and a wide variety of rolls. The seafood is succulent and fresh, and the incredible artistry that happens in the kitchen should be a source of pride for the restaurant’s skilled chefs. Sushi Zanmai has been a staple in Boulder for more than 30 years. Their customers, many of which are our readers, are fiercely loyal. “Our fun, festive atmosphere attracts people from all walks of life and different age groups,“ says the management team. “From the average college student doing sake bombs to the family of four who are looking for happy hour and kids meals, we can provide them with what they want. To have this kind of support from your readers year after year is what keeps us going.”

Also a winner for Best Italian, Carelli’s takes the Best Ambiance category, demonstrating that Boulder loves this restaurant for more than just food. One customer’s feedback said it best: “The ambiance feels upscale but unpretentious, and I just can’t say enough good things about the staff, which can really make or break an experience for me.” Carelli’s customers revel in its romantic atmosphere. Warm and inviting with indoor and outdoor firepits, soft lighting, cozy seating and tasteful curves, there is a definite feeling of “ahhh” when your drink arrives at your classy lounge seat and you can just let go. The Med, as it’s locally known, has won Boulder County Gold numerous times in several categories. This year, you loved their appetizers best. The Med’s ever-evolving tapas menu is legendary. For example, pairing phyllo baked spinach and feta with a lunchtime wine is going to result in a tastebud happy dance. Smoked Idaho trout or bacon-wrapped Medjool dates might be next on your list. Tangerine refreshes your hopes for a truly unique American breakfast and brunch with the freshest and most colorful ingredients available. With a happening dining room and patio, killer service, and a weekday lunch menu that doesn’t know how to stop being awesome, it’s little wonder Tangerine’s customers got out the vote for Best Breakfast, Brunch and Gluten Free. Customers are Tangerine’s great love, and they all get comment cards after every meal, which staff take to heart. “We serve hearty, healthy and ample dishes where bright vegetables, sauces and fresh ingredients are integral and the shining stars of each plate,” says Chef and Proprietor Alec Schuler. “We use real ingredients and offer a variety of freshly squeezed juices. We also have a large menu to choose from, so there is something for everyone, especially when it comes to accommodating dietary restrictions.” Whether you’re a carnivore, vegetarian or vegan or eating gluten-free, you’re going to find something amazing at Tangerine. Does a salmon and
asparagus omelette with capers and onions and topped with dill mascarpone whet your appetite? How about The Vegan: a glorious helping of tempeh, avocado, fresh arugula, sautéed spinach, eggplant caponata, pinto beans, almond romesco sauce and walnut pesto. Maybe poached eggs over roasted local Hazel Dell mushrooms, creamy soft polenta, charred asparagus and pecorino romano cheese? Decisions! “Thank you Boulder and our regulars for all the support! Black Cat Farm Table Bistro is a champion of farm-to-table fare and a local favorite in a movement that has seen a lot of growth in Boulder. It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since the bistro opened on 13th Street. Now, as then, the 130-acre certified organic Black Cat Farm supplies the bistro (and Bramble & Hare, next door) with vegetables, lamb, pork and poultry. As Black Cat says, its restaurant cuisine is simply an expression of the land and the season. As such, the menu changes every day. Founder and Chef Eric Skokan’s farm is the creative “lab” in which he dreams up dishes that are true to season, organic, local, sustainable, and as fresh as that very day. Watch the website for special dining events and to peruse sample menus.
Who are you going to call at 1:30 a.m. when you desperately need a 24 inch-crust layered with pepperoni, sausage, bell peppers, mushrooms, onions and cheese? In Boulder, Cosmo’s Pizza rules the night whether it’s dine-in, take-out or delivery. “Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights it’s incredibly busy with a line out the door,” said Kevin Behnke, director of operations for Cosmo’s Pizza with two stores in Boulder. There’s a simple reason, Behnke said. “We make good pizza with fresh ingredients. We make our sauce and dough fresh every day,” he said. Cosmo’s menu also boasts calzones (with ricotta and mozzarella), cheese breadsticks and salads with the pizzeria’s famous spicy ranch as dressing, dip or both.

Boulder’s favorite meatless café has earned it repeated wins in this category not by serving dishes pretending to be meat, but with well-crafted fare designed to be beautifully vegetarian, vegan or raw. “This award really reflects the passion of the chefs and servers. We’ve kept the cuisine dynamic as we change the menu a few times a year,” said Leaf’s General Manager Chris Hopkins. However there are some dishes so popular they have earned a permanent spot on the roster including the Jamaican jerk tempeh and zucchini pad Thai in peanut sauce. THE ACADEMY BOULDER
970 Aurora Ave., Boulder, 303.938.1920; theacademyboulder.com
Shirley Berg, executive director, describes The Academy as “a small retirement community in the heart of Boulder.” The key word there is “community.” That concept is central to everything The Academy stands for. “Part of the love of living here is every resident know every staff member,” Berg said. She believes working in a true community environment makes all the difference. To that end, she places a great deal of focus on hiring and empowering staff members who love what they do, and love working at The Academy. She attributes their reputation as a solid employer to several factors: the local owners, a management style committed to recognition for excellence, and even the service-minded nature of current staff. The staff is also multi-generational, including even high school and college students. This creates a unique, dynamic interaction between staff and residents that’s fulfilling to all. “It just works as a community,” she said. In fact, Elevations is the number one mortgage lender in Boulder County, servicing four out of every ten local mortgages. Their mortgage team uses a holistic lending approach to deliver personalized service to help members achieve their homeownership dreams. Ray Lindley is the senior vice president of lending for Elevations. “We believe in building deep relationships with our members throughout the mortgage process, and we appreciate this recognition of the work of our entire team.”
Founded more than a century ago in 1902, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s mission has been to protect and enhance the lives of companion animals by promoting healthy relationships between pets and people. That mission is just as true today as it’s ever been. Lisa Pedersen, the CEO for HSBV, puts it this way. “We are so fortunate to live in a community who values the lives of animals and the richness they bring to our lives. Because of your support, HSBV is able to provide comprehensive services, including shelter, medical care and behavioral support to more than 7,000 animals each year through our innovative, lifesaving programs.”A resource for all kinds of animal needs, Pedersen has a lot of faith in both HSBV and the Boulder County community.

Servicing both local and global clients, they can handle travel arrangements for groups numbering in the thousands. However, they cater to much smaller groups, too. When asked about their non-corporate side, Cain said, “We specialize in higher end vacation travel.” With destinations like Europe, South America and the Pacific Rim, their dedicated vacation experts can make arrangement for every aspect of your trip, including flights, car rental, lodging, cruises,
tours and more. It’s what Cain calls an “end to end” experience, whether you’re booking a small trip for two, or planning something big like a destination wedding. Turning his attention back to the local community, Cain specifically expressed his gratitude. “Thanks to Boulder,” he said. “We’ve been here since 1979,” Dr. Ginger Shriver said. Dr. Shriver has been the owner of Swan Lake for the past five years. Prior to that, she was the office manager for eight years. She left, earned her own chiropractic degree, and came right back to the same practice.“We feel like we offer highly specific, personal plans,” she said. Swan Lake provides a wide variety of chiropractic options, including post-injury care, sports therapy, health and wellness adjustments, and spinal tune-ups. Dr. Shriver explained that their approach is holistic, including traditional chiropractic techniques, as well as other forms of therapy, like spinal decompression. Swan Lake treats patients of all ages, from children to seniors.
If you’re only nominally familiar with CrossFit, you may envision the typical CrossFit gym as a barren warehouse space, often little more than a location to break a serious sweat. CrossFit Sanitas aims to change that. Tom Baker, the gym manager for CrossFit Sanitas, describes his gym as “a new spin on the CrossFit ideals.” The lighting is bright and welcoming. Childcare is available, as are physical therapy, massage and even acupuncture. And every class is conducted by coaches who assist participants by making on-the-spot modifications so that each workout is tailored to each client. Baker explained that CrossFit isn’t just for elite athletes. It can be adjusted for anyone, from the young and fit to the elderly. CrossFit Sanitas offers roughly 90 classes a week in a fun, social environment because, as Baker says, working out should be both effective and fun.

Christopher Schweitzer and Karima Thobani purchased Family Hearing Centers in 1986, shortly after their first date. Now married, they’re the proud owners of a family-owned business that’s all about personal touch. “We specialize in our service,” said Jennifer LaBorde, a Hearing Instrument Specialist for Family Hearing Centers. She explained that the nature of their business demands an individual approach. The same hearing device will need entirely different configuration for different people. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Family Hearing Centers carries all major brands of hearing aids and can handle servicing and maintenance of devices, as well as diagnosis and initial set-up. Their goal is to get to know each client and truly understand their hearing needs before making a single recommendation. Given some of the technological advances in the field, the right hearing aid can make a huge difference. “We really enjoy helping people live better lives through better hearing,” LaBorde said.

AVANTI THERAPY
Avanti Therapy came under new ownership in 2008, when Heather Marinaccio Boak and Julie Edelman purchased the clinic from its original owner in order to continue providing the community with the best of care. Marinaccio Boak, a Somatic Movement Educator, and Edelman, a Physical Therapist, have been expanding Avanti’s team and therapy offerings ever since. Avanti is a full service outpatient physical therapy practice, offering a variety of treatments for the full spectrum of orthopedic and neurological problems. Marinaccio Boak says quality of care sets them apart from their competitors. "We only hire the best therapists,” she says. “We provide them enough time with their patients to do their best work. Most PT clinics only allow 15 to 20 minutes with a therapist and the remainder of the appointment is with an aide. We have found that
people heal faster when they are seen one on one with their treating therapist for an hourlong visit.” Another unique element of the clinic is their leading work with the Schroth method for the treatment of those with scoliosis. Avanti therapists were the first in the state to receive this specialized training, one of the only approaches shown to stop curve progression in most people. Patients come from all over the country to learn this method of managing their scoliosis. When asked what sets them apart from other physical therapy clinics in the area, Marinaccio Boak says, “We have been told by our patients that we are their safe haven for healing. We believe that says it all.”

The new technology allows Dr. Beyer to better treat patients who suffer from keratoconus or cataracts. One thing that hasn’t changed? The company’s customer service. “Every one of our patients is like our family,” Beyer says. “We do what we feel is best for them and that is our first consideration. Each of these facilities offer a variety of different services. What separates BCH from other facilities is their focus on community, says Richard Sheehan, director of marketing and public relations at BCH. “BCH is truly a community health network,” he says. “Our patients are also our neighbors and friends, so we really work hard to make sure our patients receive care that addresses their emotional and spiritual needs as well as their physical condition. We’d rather see 100 patients at half the price than half the patients at expensive prices.” Terrapin’s medical location offers a wide variety of products, including a selection of Cannabidiol, or CBD, products that can be used for pain relief. “We have something for every patient and consumer,” Pellegrino says. PRECISION PLUMBING HEATING COOLING ELECTRIC 5035 Chaparral Court, Boulder, 303.581.1455; precisionplumbing.com
Precision Plumbing Heating Cooling Electric is owned by a tried and true Boulder local, Tom Robichaud, who graduated from Fairview High School. In 1982, Robichaud started Precision as a plumbing company and later added HVAC and electrical services. Seven years ago, Robichaud was joined by his daughter, Andrea Everhart, who is now the company’s vice president. “He started the company with his own two hands from the very beginning,” Everhart says of her father. Precision operates a monthly program called Hugs in which community members vote on a non-profit to receive a $1000 donation from Precision. Precision also purchases ad space in the Daily Camera for the winning non-profit to raise awareness about their cause. “It’s about giving back to the community that has given us so much,” Everhart says. “We definitely want people to know about the Hugs programs so we can get more nominations.” Nominations can be made on Precision’s website. When asked about Precision’s secret to success, Everhart says the key is selective hiring and continual training. “We work really hard at bringing the right people into the organization and we want to make sure that our customer service experience is better than the next,” she says. “We work a lot on our training and it’s ongoing.” With the cold weather approaching, Precision offers furnace checkups for just $59 and the company has done furnace giveaways for those in need. “We believe in just doing what’s right and that’s an easy motto to live by,” Everhart says.

Best for Pets Pet Boarding Service and Pet Sitting Service COTTONWOOD KENNELS
7275 Valmont Road, Boulder, 303.442.2602; cottonwoodkennels.com
With a proverbial trophy case of best-of awards that span well over a decade, Cottonwood Kennels has earned its merit as Boulder’s go-to for pet daycare and boarding. Since their doors opened in 1972, Cottonwood Kennels has made it their mission to serve as “a play-and-stay for pets that’s as comfortable as a bed and breakfast but with all the fun of doggy play care.” Cottonwood, nestled on a small farm just east of Boulder, is the perfect countryside vacation spot for your pet, offering stays ranging from an afternoon to several weeks. Staff regularly see furry friends racing owners to the door, where they await play yards, swimming pools, pasture walks, agility courses and, of course, their furry buddies. Besides the wild and wooly clientele, the dedicated, hardworking staff is what makes Cottonwood such a special place. According to Co-owner Tom Bonfili, it takes a “very special person” to spend the entire day caring for other
people’s pets. “It’s easy to romanticize how much fun it is working in a business like this,” he adds. Co-owner Penny Vardell agrees. “All the guys in the back love what they do, and it really shows,” she says. In addition to running daycare services for pets, Cottonwood offers full boarding services for both canines and felines, with the staff making sure pets stick closely to routines – eating times, play times and nap times – as possible. They also boast a complete, modern grooming shop, where fur stylists offer everything from sudsy baths to careful clippings and complete makeovers. 1405 S. Broadway St., Boulder, 303.449.5505; broadwayanimal.com
“Customized” is a word that’s often associated with the service received at Broadway Animal Hospital and Pet Center, Boulder’s favorite vet clinic and grooming service provider located in south Boulder. “We pay attention to each individual, customizing the care and service we provide,” says Dr. Lee Woods, a licensed and experienced veterinarian and Broadway Animal’s Hospital Director. Established in 1991, Broadway Animal provides a wide variety of services including emergency care, dental care, grooming, surgery, radiology, hospice care and euthanasia. During routine visits, the attentive and compassionate staff, led by Dr. Woods, focuses on providing security and comfort to both four-legged and two-legged clients, who often find veterinary visits a stressful experience. “What makes us stand out is our personalized and compassionate service,” says Dr. Woods. “When people walk through the door, that’s the first thing they perceive.” With two associate veterinarians,
Drs. Aya Alt and Guru “Bibi” Khalsa, who’ve worked closely with animals ranging from alpacas to chihuahuas, Dr. Woods is confident that the veterinary service Broadway Animal provides is thorough, compassionate, and fully customized to suit the client’s needs. And the service doesn’t stop at veterinary check-ups: Takako Chasson, Broadway Animal’s professional pet groomer, has worked with animals her entire life and graduated from grooming college in 1992. During the month of September, clients can save 20% on a pet’s dental cleaning and x-rays for Dental Discount Month. As the only climbing gym to offer over 7,200 square feet of kid-friendly climbing, this Boulder gym is at the forefront of developmental education for toddlers to teens. “When the mental and physical elements of climbing combine, mind and body work together to produce a focused and confident flow of agility, balance and coordination.” Got a climber on your hands?

Full-Day/Full-Week Summer Day Camp ROCKY MOUNTAIN DAY CAMP
2205 Norwood Ave., Boulder, 303.495.5204; rockymtndaycamp.com
At Cottonwood Kennels, “customer service” translates into their dialed-in connection between pet and person. “What makes Cottonwood special is our pet-to-person ratio, our attention to detail, and the care that we give,” says Co-owner Penny Vardell. The big-hearted and dedicated staff carefully monitors pets’ habits and attitudes throughout the day, even providing pet owners with a report card at the end of each stay. “We treat each animal as an individual, and find out what their individual needs are. Each pet is different, and we understand that.” And when Cottonwood says every pet, they mean it: they’ve even boarded a hedgehog or two throughout the years. If that’s not customer service, we don’t know what is.
When David and Holly Hansburg’s son, Paxton, was old enough to attend summer camp, they discovered only limited options in Boulder County. Seeing a gap that needed to be filled, the idea behind Rocky Mountain Day Camp was born. Both career educators, the Hansburgs made it their mission to provide families in Boulder County with a multiweek summer day camp, where kids can build self-esteem, create memories and learn new skills in a spirited community of new friends. Through providing a wide range of age-appropriate activities that are both fun and challenging, day camp students hone skills they already possess and learn new skills through the experts and role models on staff. The result? Confident, happy, well-rounded kids.

GREENWOOD & MYERS MORTUARY
UNITY OF BOULDER SPIRITUAL CENTER
Greenwood & Myers works hard to make the most difficult time in their customers’ lives a little easier. The mortuary’s business model includes requisite amount of grief and loss with every transaction, and that fact isn’t lost on the owners. Their philosophy incorporates care, sympathy and kindness, factors that have long made them a standout in the Boulder community. “We offer professional guidance and personal and specialized attention before, during and after the loss of a loved one,” representatives insist. “Our reputation for honesty and integrity is very well known, and it is our most valuable asset.” That reputation comes through in the mortuary’s full spectrum of services, from grief counseling to personalized funerals to flower arrangements.
One only needs to look to the name of the Unity of Boulder Spiritual Center to discover its mission and message. The spiritual center focuses on the power of unity in its teachings, and that message has resonated with a diverse congregation. “Unity is a family church center that emphasizes diversity, healing, community and love for all,” says Spokeswoman Sierra Samuel. “People come for the message … Unity believes that the Kingdom of Heaven is already within you, and it is through self-realization that we can come to know the divine and see it manifest in our lives.” Head Minister Jack Groverland and Associate Minister Syntysche Groverland work hard to spread that message, and have made Unity a spiritual institution in Boulder County.

Boulder High School offers students a strong bridge to a changing world. From focused efforts on preparing students for Advanced Placement exams and concurrent enrollment classes to providing a rich tapestry of extra-curricular activities, Boulder High is all about offering a balanced yet rigorous academic experience. “We aim to provide a learning experience that demonstrates a care and concern for each of our students – a defining characteristic of our school,” notes BHS Principal James Hill. “Our aim is to produce graduates who are not only prepared intellectually for their futures but also have been offered every opportunity to find success.” Success has a different definition for every student, and the staff and administration at BHS offer plenty of pathways for their entire population.
Some simple statistics eloquently illustrate the quality of education at the Dawson School. The Lafayettebased K-12 institution boasts an enrollment of 525 students with a student-to-faculty ratio of 7:1 and an average class size of 15. What’s more, the school has a 100 percent graduation rate and a 100 percent four-year college/university acceptance rate. Sixty-five percent of the school’s seniors receive scholarship/grant offers, which total more than $6 million on an annual basis. “(We) offer challenging college-preparatory academics, robust athletics and arts programs, and renowned experiential and outdoor education,” said Dawson spokeswoman Sarah Amirani. “Dawson graduates are young men and women who achieve their individual potential, savor life and meet the challenges of the world. The school is committed to the development of character, emphasizing respect, compassion, courage and integrity.” Judging from the statistics, the staff at Dawson are fulfilling their mission.

Coloradans love their Subarus. The model is the go-to choice for many across Boulder County and the rest of the state – chalk it up to the Centennial State’s reputation for an active lifestyle. That popularity can make many Subaru models harder to come by, but that has never dissuaded the staff at Flatirons Acura Subaru. The dealership has earned its reputation for connecting consumers with their most prized Subaru models; their commitment is clear in their mission statement. As the Flatirons website boasts: “While the current popularity and resulting high demand of Subaru vehicles has made some Subaru models hard to come by, our professional sales staff will do everything we can to ensure you get behind the wheel of your desired Subaru. We’re a company that is passionate about what we sell.” We agree. Runner Up: Fisher Honda Kia, 6025 Arapahoe Road, Boulder, 303.245.6416; fisherauto.com September 25, 2016

FISHER HONDA KIA
6025 Arapahoe Road, Boulder, 303.245.6416; fisherauto.com
Craig Fisher, co-owner, president and namesake of Fisher Honda Kia has a simple and direct appeal to his customers: “Your experience is our numberone priority,” Fisher says. “No games, no gimmicks, just good business.” Judging from the dealership’s track record when it comes to repairs, service and oil changes, Fisher is telling it like it is. Bob and Madelyne Fisher founded Fisher Auto in 1968, and the business boasts a familiar, family feel. That sense of honesty and directness comes through in the interactions with the repair shop and service department. Whether it’s a matter of serious repairs or a simple oil change, the crew at Fisher Honda Kia specialize in offering customers a low-stress, manageable experience that reflects a consistent set of values and an impressive degree of know-how. The dealership’s Honda and Kia service centers offer services that run the gamut, and its collision center prides itself on making
short work of even the most extensive damages. Case in point: the crew attached an entirely new frame to an F-150 that had suffered extensive damage, managing to save the engine and refurbish the entire vehicle. That degree of commitment comes through in their easy and rapid oil change service. No matter the hour, the folks at Fisher are consistent in their ability to get the job done well and in a timely matter. The Fisher family has earned their spot as one of the most trusted automotive clans in the Boulder County area.
A lot can get done in 12 minutes. The ownership at Puddle Car Wash is well aware of this fact, and they make the most of every second. With a standard that sees customers in and out of the building in rapid time, Puddle is the definition of rapid service infused with quality. “Our goal is to provide a quality wash at a reasonable price. Our employees are trained to be polite and helpful,” says Puddle Car Wash managers. “The on-site management and ownership group oversees the day-to-day operation to ensure a consistent product. Twelve minutes in and out is our target for a car wash.” That’s not to say the folks at Puddle can’t dedicate more time to a project. HAZEL’S BEVERAGE WORLD
BOULDER WINE MERCHANT
Most people first head to Hazel’s for its sheer selection. With 35,000 square feet and 11,000 items, it’s a big, fun place to shop for beer, wine and liquor. But what keeps customers coming back is a reflection of good service. “People shop with you when you meet their needs. It’s about what our customers need,” says Store Manager Jim Dean. That’s why he hires only staff members that can help meet Boulder County’s particular requirements, whether that’s passing along beer knowledge or locating specialty items. And because “we’re local guys, we want to give back,” says Dean, who’s store is a big supporter of University of Colorado. “I just found out that we’re the largest collector for Humane Society of Boulder Valley.”
“We strive to represent inventory from thoughtful producers who make things in a more natural, sustainable way,” says Brett Zimmerman, who owns the intimate store with his wife. Attention to detail is a way of life at the neighborhood wine, beer and spirits enclave. “We like to pay attention to why we are putting something on the shelf,” he says. Zimmerman knows people by name and what they like and is always adapting to their needs. “One day they come in for craft beer, then a $300 bottle of wine, then a cheap bottle for dinner,” he says. “My approach is taking care of people the way you would in the front house of a nice restaurant. We anticipate people’s needs when they walk through the door.”

No one’s barking about the fact that PC’s Pantry has become a Boulder landmark – for pets and owners. So it’s no surprise that this establishment, locally owned by the equally iconic Mary Lee Withers, won this year in two categories. She attributes the pet shop’s success to a well-balanced mix: a natural willingness to help customers, plus product selection and knowledge of loyal customers’ animals and their needs. Four- and threelegged staff members add an exceptionally warm, friendly feel to P.C.’s. “We have six cats and three dogs who come to work every day,” says Withers. “One of our cats, Annie, is a tripod.” In the ever-popular pet bakery/deli, the standout delicacy is liver loaf. They’re dogs, OK. “Most people do not cook with liver, so this is a special treat for the animals,” says Withers. “Also, the P.C.’s Pizza has been a staple and favorite for dogs since we opened.” Runner Up for Best Pet Store: Whole Pets, Crossroad Commons, 2835 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.4733; wholepetsholistic.com Runner Up for Best Pet Bakery/ Deli: The Dirty Dog, 1100 US-287, Broomfield, 303.469.9490; facebook.com/TheDirtyDogGrooming

You will never go to another garage sale like this. Specialty Appliance does all its own installations – that means no subcontractors – and staffs a in-house, factory-trained customer service team. “We offer certified installation, which on some brands extends the warranty by a year,” says Marketing Manager Stephanie Shephard. Showrooms stock a wide selection, and people
appreciate the hands-on environment. “Just about every brand is out there on display to look at,” says Shephard. In that respect, nothing’s changed. But the art at SmithKlein is leaning more contemporary these days. “My mom taught me that you’ve got to show what you like,” he says. “My wife and I gravitate toward contemporary and it has been well received.” The gallery is also expanding its range,
showing more nationally acclaimed artists in painting and sculpture, as well as art jewelry and glass. Atlas may be best known for a vast selection of tile, carpet and wood in one big, red barn. But it’s all the little stuff that customers love about this experienced, efficient floorcovering crew. “We know that if we take care of our customers they will take care of us,” says Owner Leister Bowling, who is carrying on a 58-year-old tradition. “We treat every customer that walks in door the same, whether they’re buying a $10 box of grout or a $10,000 kitchen.” That extends to a popular mid-October customer appreciation sale where loyal customers get up to 50% off and new customers can chat up the Atlas staff. When Gary Neptune opened the doors to his shoe and ski repair shop in Boulder in 1973, he never imagined that its humble beginnings would blossom into an all-things outdoor store and collectors museum. Neptune, a skiing and climbing enthusiast, surrounded himself with a staff of fellow adventurers who were fueled by the same outdoorsy passions, and Boulder’s outdoor community quickly took note. Recognizing superior products and no-spin advice from Front Range experts and professionals, Boulder holds Neptune Mountaineering as the go-to source for all things backcountry, camping, climbing,
and slope exploring. Neptune’s guarantee is a solid one: that every item you purchase at Neptune Mountaineering meets your highest standards. They’ve learned a lot about great customer service since 1973, and go above and beyond to make sure outdoorsy customers are satisfied with their service, products and overall experience. Now, what’s this about a museum? In the late 1970s, Gary and his friends began collecting climbing and skiing equipment from around the world, focusing on a significant period of exploration from the mid 1800s to the latter half of the 20th century. In addition to its extensive, one-

With 30+ years as Boulder’s fly fishing shop, Front Range Anglers offers a wide range of fishing and angling products, as well as guide services to some of the area’s best fly fishing spots, and workshops led by its passionate and experienced staff. From hosting annual kids camps every summer to supporting CU’s fly fishing club (it’s a thing!), Front Range Anglers looks beyond age and ability to further the fishing sport. Need to upgrade your instrument? Or maybe look for rentals. Either way, H.B. Woodsongs is there for the musician. And with the ever growing folk music scene striking a chord with fans and players alike, musicians need a reliable music store that offers top quality new and used instruments. From guitars and ekulalies, to banjos, mandolins, dulcimers, and small percussion, those are just a few instrumental offerings. “We try hard to give our customers friendly service,” says Owner Dana Flitcraft. And there’s been an uptick in people taking to the ekulalie. That’s one reason they offer a euk jam sesh every Monday, says Flitcraft. And since staff are players too, they bring their knowledge and love for music to customers. “We try to offer customers what they need and we really appreciate their loyalty,” says Flitcraft.
At most record stores, customers haul in stacks of retro vinyl goodness in hopes of getting the best trade in values for old records. But that’s not the case at Bart’s Records. Nope. They come to your place and haul it away so you don’t have to.“We come to your home and look at your record collection, and that’s something no one else is doing,” says Story Employee Bill Moran. No doubt, vinyl records are a hot commodity these days. Question is – why? “People are starting to realize vinyl has a lot warmer, truer sound quality, where as CDs have this clean, almost too clean digital sound,” says Moran. Customers say the people who work at Bart’s are some of the most friendly and knowledgeable staff, says Moran.
